Well, Bruce, a long time ago, two people fell in love and, no, I'm just kidding. Bruce, I have been in the outdoor arena for a little over the past, a little over a decade. And I've obviously been a hunter and outdoors my entire life. And I have to tell you that my introduction to deer hunting was miserable.

I shot my first deer ever in Montana. It was a mule deer, which I had always been told for my young life were darn near impossible to eat. And I shot it on the last half hour of the last day of the season, having hunted for ten straight days with a high temperature of ten below. "ACE" Jerry Luciano Views

Bruce: Oh, my word.

Ace: It's amazing I ever went deer hunting again, but I got the bug and have since gone to hunt deer and dozens of other big game species, if not hundreds, all over the world.

Bruce: Well, that was a great transition to the story behind the story. So let's just stay with your first deer. Where were you? Why did you spend ten days in sub zero temperatures chasing a critter?

Ace: Well, I was very fortunate to spend the first 21 Thanksgivings of my life in Montana, and my family has access to and owns some land out there, and some friends. So when I was a kid, that was where big game hunting was done. It didn't even occur to me that we could hunt in our back yard in Illinois. We went to Montana to hunt, and that's where my uncle was, where his farm was, so that's kind of what we did.

Hani: Yeah, so there's a challenge going around the internet. I heard about it before but it's basically, it's bring awareness to veterans. There's a stat, a very disturbing stat. 22 veterans commit suicide every single day due to mental illness. People are trying to bring awareness, especially on Facebook. Bruce: Why is that important to you? People think about the United States they don't think about Canada and the same problem is germane up there so let's talk about that part of you and then we'll jump into the software side. Hani Mourra Social Media Video Guru

Hani: Absolutely. I mean, whatever the issue is, I mean this happens to be about veterans but whatever it is, whenever you as a person can offer any kind of value even if it's just as simple as building awareness about something, I'm all for it. I'm the kind of person who just wants to help people in any way I can and pushups, even though they don't sound very difficult, they are really difficult, but that's not the point. Bruce: Yeah, and we all got stories. In the warm up I shared one like ostensibly and folks, if you haven't come alongside one veteran, guy or gal, in your community, I know there's one person within a mile where every person lives that's hearing my voice right now. There's no question about it. And a simple, "Hey let's grab a cup of coffee. Let's have a beer. Hey, let's go out and play some golf. Let's go do this. Hani Mourra Social Media Video Guru

These people need you even though you think they don't, every single one of 'em needs you to get out of your own sandbox, get into theirs and spend some time. It doesn't take a lot of time, but you might be the most important person in their life.

Welcome to part two of Dr. Ken Nordberg and we talked about whitetail tracks his new book coming out 2016 Pocket Guide to Whitetail Tracks Fall and Winter in the first segment. Now this is the second segment where we're gonna continue talking about blinds for whitetails and then were gonna finish up this segment with hunting for mature whitetails. So Dr. Nordberg welcome to the show again.

Bruce: Let's just recap folks we ended the last segment with the openers there you're sitting in your blind or your tree stand but once day three begins something else changes over and you change sites if you're not seeing a deer in the morning then at noontime or so you make a decision and you move to a new spot. Now how do you decide where that new spot's gonna be?

Dr. Nordberg: Well the way we do it is look for their fresh tracks, freshly made tracks and we do that midday usually between 11:00 and 12:00 when we end up in camp and have lunch and then we go out to places where we found those fresh tracks of big bucks.

And so we have about 13 guys in our camp nowadays I got lots of grandkids in camp nowadays it probably won't be long I'll have great grandkids out there as well. But we hunt an area now a wilderness area that's up to six square miles in size and out of the square miles we have certain trails they're actually connecting deer trails that move widely through each of these areas and my sons and I, we cruise those between 11:00 and noon every day unless we're bringing in a big buck but we cruise those every day. And we learned to do that from wolves. Wolves use this same technique of cruising on certain trails to find fresh scents of likely prey and we have a lot of wolves.

I've been studying wolves now since 1990 and we have way too many wolves in our country but they've taught us a lot about deer hunting. And I call their trails that they use, and their hunting areas are up 100 square miles in size so it's pretty large but they follow these specific trails and we thought, "Well gee wouldn't it be nice if we could do that and smell where the bucks were?" Well, we don't need to do that, we can tell where they are by their tracks. And by the sizes of their tracks. And how fresh they are. And so every day usually between 11:00 and 12:00 we leave our stand sites and head back to camp but on the way we'll hike as much as we need to. Dr. Ken Nordberg Blind Works

Usually, we don't have to go through a whole mile to find fresh tracks of a buck, one that's been there this morning and therefore likely to be there toward sundown today and probably tomorrow morning as well as long as they don't alarm that buck. We can do this because we use tree stands, I even used one last year, and we use tree stands during those first three days of the season but after that and we use at least one tree stand for only one day and then we'll go to the second tree stand, and the third tree stand and those locations were determined by scouting. But after that, that scouting information isn't worth much because these older bucks, especially and a lot of older does as well, once they realize you're in the woods and they smell you or see you or hear you they know, "Hey, he's here he's back in the woods we gotta watch out." And so they know, at least they act like they know, that before you mess around out in the woods there you young deer you better find out where that hunter is first so you don't get too close to him and t...

Outstanding Outfitter With Jay Scott Outdoors

We're excited, pleased and beyond measure to have Jay Scott Outdoors on the show with us now. Jay is in the outfitting business, he's a passionate fisherman and he's pretty good hunter, especially when it comes to critters out in the Rocky Mountains. Jay, welcome to the show.

Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate you having me on the show.

Jay, let's just start right off. Jay Scott Outdoors is with Colburn and Scott Outfitters. Why don't we just start out and share with our listeners who basically comes from the West are whitetail hunters and they dream about coming out to the Rockies from Arizona all the way through British Columbia and hunting big game. Why don't you tell us about your outfitting business?

I own and operate Colburn and Scott Outfitters. We have a website, ColburnAndScottOutfitters.com. We are based here in Arizona. We hunt mainly big game from elk to bighorn sheep to Coues deer to mule deer to Gould's Turkey. Most big game animals that we have here in Arizona, I've hunted and we do Gould's Turkey hunts in Mexico and Coues deer hunts in Mexico. This will be my 17th year of going to Mexico and taking hunters down there in Sonora for the Coues deer, the distant cousin of your beloved whitetails. I like to hunt myself, I like to guide and I really enjoy what I do.

Jay, do you hunt Coues deer with a bow and arrow, with rifles, muzzle loaders? What kind of weapons do you use when you're hunting Coues deer?

I'm one of these guys. I think that turkey's made to be shot with a shotgun. I think it's a perfect animal to shoot with a shotgun as well as I think a Coues deer is a perfect animal for a spot and stalk-style hunt with a rifle. We have had hunters that had been very successful shooting very nice bucks with a bow, but it's usually big open country, glassing across big canyons using big optics, tripods, spotting these animals at great distances and then moving in, trying to get in position and get a shot with a rifle. I don't spend a lot of time myself hunting them what a bow. I spend way more time and have way more experience rifle hunting them in big open country, thick country. Open-thick, it's a combination of both.

Let's talk about the whitetail hunting, wood lots hunting in the 80 or 120 acres in the farmland of Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, and even the Sand Hills of Kansas. How would that transfer to a Coues deer hunt?

Matt Pell Accubow

Sure I can give a little short synopsis of AccuBow's timeline Matt Pell AccuBow and then we can dive into how it should benefit us all to be the best hunter that we can be whether it's with the weapon that we're using or it's so that we can make it through a challenging hunt like you said you were just out west and burning a lot of calories on a day to day basis. After a time it has an effect on your ability to harvest whatever animal you're after.

So getting back to what I originally said, AccuBow was started pretty much exactly a year ago to this day. I launched a product on Kickstarter and if you're not familiar with what Kickstarter is, it's crowd funding website where inventors go and they launch their product. They launch the idea because the product itself hasn't taken manifestation yet, and so I launched the idea, in a concept stage of the prototype I built in my garage.

And the project was successfully funded, the first successfully funded archery product on Kickstarter, I will say it's not necessarily the perfect target market for the bowhunting and archery community, but it worked out and we've taken it a long ways from the bottom up and we've been featured on a few television shows so far and it's really just growing and gaining in popularity. We've been really busy the last month or so now that hunting season's getting underway and people are knocking the cobwebs off their bow and stuff and realizing they actually have to get ready for the upcoming season. And so things have picked up a lot and it's exciting. And the AccuBow itself what it does is it provides everyone, whether you're a beginner or an expert in the sport of archery with a way supplementing the time, and the money, and the effort that you spend firing arrow after arrow after arrow in order to increase your physical capacity to shoot with your bow better. Now as bowhunters and archers, we all know that our ability to be effective with our bows is largely determined by our physical capability such as our strength, our stability, our stamina, our muscle memory, our ability to repeat our shot time after time with the same form, same consistency, same routine, and that's how we get those tight arrow grooves.

And so with that being said, what the AccuBow allows you to do is adjust the resistance from 10 to 70 pounds very simply through what we call our AccuDial, and we've built in a laser sight on the front of it which gives you that interactive stability response and allows you to mimic the same feel of holding a pin on your target but instead you're able to see exactly what that pin would be doing as that laser bounces around on your target.

So now if can picture this, if we can effectively hone in that laser to be more stable around our target, what that's gonna translate into is being able to hold our pin more steadily over our target for longer periods of time thus translating into greater accuracy and tighter arrow groups as you continue to train with the AccuBow.

Bruce: Now are laser sights legal in every single state?

Matt: The AccuBow itself does not shoot arrows, Bruce. So what it does is it provides you with an at home on the go you can train anywhere with the AccuBow. Whenever you have 5, 10 minutes of time, whenever's convenient for you, the AccuBow's an arrowless training device and so you can dry fire the AccuBow as many times as you like, it'll never damage the product. And so that allows you to work on your release while you're building your strength as well as going through the routine of holding on your target and improving that stability and your stamina.

Bruce: So instead of having to set up targets 50 yards, 70 yards out,

Common Ground Bowhunter, Reuben Dourte Common Ground, is a little project that I started and it's just a place where I go and I kind of describe it as my platform for my musings and adventures as far as whitetail deer hunting goes. So I go on there and I write my blog posts about what's happening in the woods throughout the year. And then I do a few articles on my stand setups and the strategy that's behind it and then some of the self-filming that I started doing we put into videos and share some of them on there.

So it's a work in progress, it's fun, it's kind of what I do for a hobby when I wanna relax in the evening and more or less I started it kinda with the thoughts one day my kids could, if they wanted to pursue the outdoors they could go on there and see what was going through dad's brain back then, so.

Bruce: Well, where's it going and do you have a website, tell us more about it and just where do you think the thing's going?

Reuben: Yeah, so the website is just commongroundbowhunter.com and the name I kinda just derived from the idea that some of the areas that we're hunting in Pennsylvania and the southern tier in New York really most of the eastern hunting that we do isn't quite the pristine parcels that maybe some people hunt in the more well-known, big buck states. But that's part of it for the Pennsylvania hunter. And we're not short on challenge. We have plenty of bucks to chase, plenty of deer but it's not always quite as much about the inches of antler as it is the pursuit. And so that was kind of the thought behind it and what I wanted to portray and I'll admit I feel like I pale in comparison to some of your other guests as far as being this big buck slayer.

I've had my share of success, but I profess to be the end all, be all to big buck killing. But I do feel like I'm able to relay the information that I've gleaned from different sources that have affected the way that I hunt. I feel like I can relay them to people in a relater able manner. So that was kinda why I thought it would be something that I'd like to start and kind of a fun project. Reuben Dourte Common Ground

Bruce: Now are you doing filming with this also?

Reuben: Yeah, so I thought, I guess it was back in 2014 before season, I knew that one of my buddies had just a real cheap camera arm and I was like, "You know what? I got this Handy cam here," and I was, "why don't I try and get some footage? That might be fun, that might add something to the hunt." So I got his camera arm and I started filming and I shot two does that year on film and had a lot of fun doing it, and what I found was, when I was in the woods with the camera I guess the way that I would put it, it didn't feel like I had to have every hunt be a success in the sense that it resulted in a kill. Like, if I saw a yearling buck making a scrape, and I got it on film, and could take it back to camp and show the rest of the guys back at camp, or show my friends, that was almost as much fun for me as it was shooting a deer. And I found myself going back after season and just watching my footage and reliving those hunts. And that just became almost invaluable to me and I thought, "You know what? This would be really awesome if I just threw these together into short video my kid, he was born in May of 2015 and I'm trying to brainwash him into being a deer hunter, of course. So he likes to watch all the DVDs and videos that I have and I was like, "You know what? It might be cool for him one day to able to watch dad hunting a little bit." We're heading over to Kansas City, Missouri and we're going to talk to a lady that's won a lot of accolades, won a lot of tournament as a shooter. She is an author, hunter, an ambassador and she’s a pretty good mom too. Julie Golob, thank you for joining us on Whitetail Rendezvous.

How did this all come to being that you've been very successful as a marksman? How did that come together?

I think it all goes back to growing up in a hunting and shooting family, learning about safe gun handling and firearm safety rules, jumping into competition, having the support of my dad and learning so much that I fell in love with the shooting sports. I have just been really, really fortunate to be at the right place at all the right times. I started shooting with my dad when I was fourteen and hunting with him and then I went to my first Nationals as a junior in high school and met the coach and the army shooting team. I was recruited for the Army Action Pistol Team and then everything just fell into place there. Now, I am the Captain of the Team Smith and Wesson and I am living the dream.

You've earned that and ladies and gentlemen, she was the US Army Female Athlete of the Year and Army Marksmanship Athlete of the Year and it just keeps on getting better and better. What drove you to be so focused, dedicated and understanding the heart rate and the breathing and all the things you have to do to become an exceptional championship shooter like you are?

I think the one thing that I'm constantly learning about shooting, even to this day, I've been shooting for over twenty years now competitively. I think I learned something almost every time I go on the range and every shooting sport is a little bit different. I compete primarily in the speed event. I don't really care how I'm breathing and as long as I'm breathing. I don't care of what my heart rate is doing because I am running and gunning, but I've done a good bit of precision shooting events and particularly the NRA Action Pistol Championship Bianchi Cup is all about being calm and steady. I've been able to learn a lot about shooting in various different genres. I think it all comes down to being competitive as a kid and wanting to be the best at something. When I found shooting and hunting, that was what I fell in love with and with hard work and perseverance, it's come together quite well.

All right, I grew up in northern Indiana around Elkhart, southland area. And I grew up on a small rural cropland. And we had almost zero deer at that time, this would be in around 58, 57 and if we just saw a track and I'm talking about myself and my older brother, we would get all excited. Because there wasn't any deer where we lived to speak of. You'd see one once in awhile, but not very often. Then one day I was waiting, I was in the eighth grade and it was 1958 and we lived on a country road, there wasn't any other houses around, and I'm standing there waiting for the school bus and I see a doe run across a field. I don't know what I was gonna do but you didn't see deer and I was gonna track that deer. Well I spent the day tracking that deer and so I never did find it and when I got back home, of course, I caught it from my dad but we were so intrigued by deer because there wasn't any. I believe it was 59, and it was like a one-day season

Then my older brother they opened up the first deer season, I believe it was 59, and it was like a one-day season. You'd shoot one buck, shotgun only and my one brother Mel, and my Uncle Jack, they got all excited about deer hunting. Well, that one-day season they couldn't find any slugs, there wasn't any in the stores. So they decided, I don't know if they heard this somewhere or just come up with it on their own, to take a regular shotgun shell and take a knife and cut around the bottom of the wadding, it was paper then, paper casings. And they'd cut around there and then they'd put tape around there and they went out and I was watching 'em they went out there about 40 yards, 30 yards and they were lucky to hit a pie plate. But that's all they had. So they went hunting that first couple of seasons and I would listen to their stories and got all excited about them tracking deer, what little deer they saw. And from there on that's when I decided I'm gonna chase these deer.

So I spent the first three years and I didn't kill a deer

So I bought me a 12 gauge fancy shotgun and it just had a not very accurate at all but it kicked like a mule. So I spent the first three years and I didn't kill a deer. I hunted hard, didn't kill a thing but as it went on, I did take one. And then I decided okay, it's time to try this bowhunting because you can hunt more, they opened up the season a little more and you could hunt with a bow.

So that give me a little extra hunting time, so. At that time there weren't really any large sporting goods stores and the big box stores I think there was only K-Mart at that time. There wasn't a Walmart or some of these other big sporting goods stores. There just wasn't any except K-Mart. And they started marketing a recurve bow called a Shakespeare, made by Shakespeare and I bought a 40-pound Necedah Shakespeare and then my uncle bought one and then my brother bought one. And we started hunting with those bows. And as far since, if I remember right there was only one scent you could buy or on the market and that was Pete Rickard.

He was a guide out of Canada. And he had a scent on the market and then K-Mart, they come out with a scent called [inaudible 00:04:34] and so we bought these scents we didn't know anything, how to use them or anything, we just bought 'em. And first time my brother and I went into the woods, it was dark, and we poured this scent on us and I think we both used a bottle apiece, and we put it all over us, we put it on our shoes.
