Three astronauts who aren't The Doctor battle homicidal vegetables and Daleks while the latter plot to take over the galaxy.

This episode is an anomaly for so many reasons. First off, there's no Doctor. Secondly, there are no companions. Thirdly, well, it's essentially a standalone prologue to 'The Dalek Masterplan', which doesn't immediately follow it.

Three human astronauts, possibly affiliated with the UN, find themselves on the planet Kembel for reasons only known to one of them. That guy is Marc Cory, agent with The Space Security Service, who has received reports of a Dalek spaceship being sighted nearby and has lead his fellow astronauts to what is commonly known as the most dangerous planet in the galaxy, with no helmets, gloves, backup or clue of the terrible fate that – spoiler alert – is about to befall them, simply because he has a hunch the Daleks may be hiding there.

True enough, that they are. And they've gathered representatives of the six (or possibly seven) most dangerous species in the galaxy in the hopes of forming an alliance that will shatter Jupiter, Venus and the lunar colonies. Oh, and Earth.

And as though that's not bad enough, they've brought a bunch of Varga plants along with them as well, to guard against possible human spies...

There are two versions of this out there, as far as we're aware. Of course, there's the Loose Cannon recon(struction) that is superb.

The 8th Doctor self-identifies as a jellyfish in this 'Little Mermaid'/'Doctor Who' mash-up.

As we heard in the post-credit sequence of 'The Vengeance of Morbius', Lucie Miller was blasted in the face and/or chest by The Headhunter (of most audiobooks fame) 6 months after witnessing The Doctor plummet to his death on Karn. Turns out, she survived. And so did the Doctor!

Lucie quickly learns that the Headhunter shot her with a Quantum Time Bullet, then un-shot her, and is planning to un-un-shoot her, unless the Doctor, who in turn was saved by The Sisterhood of the Teleporting Pants, erm, OF KARN and teleported to the squid world of Orbis, doesn't repair the TARDIS for her. Oh, yeah, that's right. She's got the TARDIS, but it's broken, and she plans to sell it in mint-condition to the highest bidder.

So off they go to Orbis, where – Spoilers – hostilities are breaking out between the indigenous squid race, the Keltans, and the invading clam/lobster/oyster/snails, the Molluscari...

(Wait for it.)

... whose leader is voiced by Andrew Sachs, famous, among other things, for portraying both Skagra in the webcast version of Shada, and a little character you may have heard of, namely, Manuel in Fawlty Towers!

The Doctor takes Rose back to London and traumatises her mother, while flatulent aliens stage a coup.

The Doctor takes Rose back to London, to 12 hours after she left, he says. She's quite pleased to be reunited with her mum again, and reasonably doesn't even bring up her (ex) boyfriend, but soon realises that the Doctor somehow got it all wrong. A whole year has passed since she left, and this minor temporal hiccup has inadvertently traumatised all of her family and friends. Even Mickey (aka 'Ricky') has not gone unscathed, in that everyone assumed he was a murderer (despite, one might assume, a thorough police investigation determining the contrary) and he consequently never got laid again.

And then, just as matters appear to be equalising, a UFO crash-lands in the Thames, the country is put on high alert, and some weirdo minister is made temporary Prime Minister in the actual (spoilers: murdered) PM's absence. It transpires, the new guy's a fat, farting alien, and he and his entire family are taking over the country.

*ahem*

Doc to the rescue, please.

Doc, Vicki and Steven encounter sexism, Hutts and pudgy budget-Daleks in this serial that does not necessarily take place in Galaxy 4.

The Doctor, Steven and Vicki materialise on a planet that is, as far as we are made aware, nowhere near Galaxy 4, whatever that is. Doc takes some readings and quickly deduces that there is no life on the planet, and neither Vicki nor Steve makes a fuss when The Doctor has clearly been proven wrong. There are in fact TWO stranded, alien lifeforms on the planet, and quite nearby as it happens, namely, the Drahvin and the Rills.

The Drahvin are a matriarchal race of allegedly gorgeous, humanoid, killing machines, while the Rills are a bunch of benevolent, allegedly ugly, Jabba-the-Hutt-esque creatures with superior intelligence and technology, the latter including pudgy, Dalek-like robots that everyone in the Galaxy, regardless of its numerical value, agrees should be called Chumblies.

The two factions are locked in combat and our intrepid time travelling troupe gets caught in the crossfire.
