BONUS audio commentary track for 'Rose', in which Eccleston is introduced as the Doctor and Rose charms our socks off!

Time for a Who Back When experiment. Potentially the start of something wonderful, possibly just a fun bonus episode, and hopefully to your liking either way, here is our first crack at a Doctor Who audio commentary track. JD and I, Ponken, sat down and watched 'Rose', the first episode of New Who starring Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.

No need for a mini summary here, really, as you probably know what this one's all about already. Suffice to say, a charming, albeit rather chavvy, Rose Tyler stumbles upon a group of Autons, but along with them The Doctor as well! Turns out there's a Nestene Consciousness plotting to invade Earth and guess Who's here to save the day.

Unless you have a photographic memory, we advise you to listen to this commentary track while watching 'Rose', as some of the gags are rather visual in nature.

It's 'Top Gear' in space and a Doctor Whodunnit to boot. The Doc and Lucie buckle up in this high octane murder mystery.

Part Doctor Whodunnit, largely Top Gear parody, Max Warp starts off with The Doctor and Lucie materialising at a spaceship show (the car show of the future), where the latest in spaceship design and engineering is being reported live on TV by the hosts of Max Warp, a scifi simulacrum of the aforementioned Terran programme. Next up is Timbo "The Ferret" who is to test-drive the new Kith Sunstorm, which he does, sort of, right into a nearby moon.

The Doc quickly deduces that this was no space traffic accident, but in fact deliberate murder, and thus starts a detective mystery that only our two intrepid protagonists can solve. And it's not just a murder mystery they need to tackle, but the potential interstellar war brewing once again between former foes, the Varlon and the Kith, as well!

The Doc is sentenced to death for a parking violation and Lucie is temporarily replaced by a nimbler model in this sadly forgettable audiobook.

This Doctor Who audiobook takes place in London, sort of, in several different periods in time, kinda, all at once. Confused? You ought to be.

After appearing in court for a traffic violation, The Doctor is somehow transported back in time to the 17th century where he is immediately sentenced to death. Meanwhile, Lucie is brought back to WW1-era London, where instead of dodging Zeppelins (which would have been pretty cool), she does her best to avoid being killed by a blind serial killer allegedly prowling the streets during blackouts. More confused? Don't worry; that's perfectly normal.

So now, while she stumbles around the place looking for the Doctor on her own, he is united with charming, daring, tightrope-walker-turned-thief and ever-so-slightly-too-common-to-be-considered-a-femme-fatale, Spring-Heeled Sophie, played by Clare Buckfield of 'Horror of Glam Rock' fame. Anyway, yade-yade-yade, they all make the inevitable journey to be reunited and figure out what the heck is going on.

Transpires there's this alien called Sepulchre (because that's a reasonable name for an alien baddy) who's behind it all. The alien of the week, and his several human avatars, including said serial killer, are played by Rupert Vansittart, whom we've met in two TV episodes already.

Let's not say any more now. There's a reason this is our shortest Audiobook review so far...

The Doctor says farewell to two trusted companions, but first they battle Desert Squids, Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula and Spherical Daleks.

The Doctor, Barbara, Ian (and Vicki) get the Space-and-Time-Visualiser working and tune in to random years in Earth's history. Fortunately, the STV is a device that allows its users to witness very specific and unmentioned points of significance, e.g. William Shakespeare having an audience with Queen Elizabeth I, Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address, The Beatles live on Top of The Pops, or Daleks exposing the recent completion of their time machine and consequent plan to hunt down Doc & Co.

And so begins this dismal journey into slapstick madness. The troupe encounters Aridians (fish people happily living on a desert planet with no water), a fake American atop the Empire State Building (apologies to all Americans on behalf of the BBC), a crewman of the Mary Celeste (whom they promptly bludgeon), and a fake Robot Doctor, who looks "exactly" like the real one.

But that's not all! We're also forced to endure our intrepid time travellers meeting Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster for an entire episode, that takes place, it seems, in a closed-down funfair in the future Ghana of 1996 – side note: the same year that John Spartan "will be" cryogenically frozen in future Los Angeles.

Furthermore, the troupe battles Gubbage Cones (aka Fungoids), Daleks (I believe you've met already) and Mechanoids (who are essentially spherical Daleks).

Were it not for two very important changes to the dynamics of Doctor Who, we might have told you to give this one a miss. Here we go:

(1) We're introduced to the next companion.

(2) We must bid Barbara and Ian farewell.
