As St. Louis continues to gain recognition as an affordable place to launch a business, the startup scene is growing at a solid rate with people from all over the United States, and even the world coming to St. Louis for a variety of reasons to pursue their dreams.

Who better to talk with regarding this topic than Ginger Imster, who is the Executive Director of Arch Grants which provides 20 startups $50,000 in non-equity funds, along with many other resources, to either bring their business to St. Louis or keep their business in St. Louis to help these businesses grow.

The discussion kicks off talking about Ginger's time growing up in Columbia Missouri then moving to St. Louis and spending just over 12 years working in a variety of positions at City Academy. City Academy is an independent private school in North St. Louis founded by Don Danforth III & Duncan Marshall that is fully accredited with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) to help well prepared minority students have a better opportunity to succeed in life and break some of the generational & cultural cycles many in the community struggle with.

Our discussion wrapped up discussing Arch Grants and Ginger talking about some of the wonderful companies to come through the Arch Grants program. Just like in real life, she and her husband are parents to four children, you can tell it is tough to talk about certain businesses while trying not to leave out others.

St. Louis "Did You Know?" bits

• The first steamboat arrived in St. Louis on August 2, 1817. It was named Zebulon M. Pike and it took 6 weeks to travel from Louisville Kentucky to St. Louis.

• St. Louis police officials did not start using fingerprinting to help identify criminals until representatives from Scotland Yard doing a presentation on the technique at the 1904 World Fair. Officials announced on July 31, 1904 that they would begin learning and using the technique.

• During the flood of 1993, the Mississippi River reached its peak level of 49.58 feet on August 1, 1993. This level was nearly 20 feet above what is typically considered flood stage. There was approximately 400 million gallons of water passing the Arch every 60 seconds at this level.

In the world of video games, you are likely familiar with companies that make & publish games such as Electronic Arts (EA Games), Rockstar Games, Infinity Ward and Treyarch (who make the Call of Duty games).

But in St. Louis there are actually a number of video game developers who make some pretty fun games that nearly anyone can just pick up, play and enjoy. On this episode, I am talking with a trio of developers from a local STL company called Happy Badgers.

St. Louis "Did You Know?" bits

• The first White Castle restaurant in St. Louis opened on July 16, 1925 at the corner of Olive & 18th Street. Today, there about 16 locations inside of the I-270 loop in the St. Louis area. Original Sliders without cheese cost $.05.

• The tallest man in recorded history was born and lived in Alton, Illinois until the age of 22 when he died while visiting the state of Michigan. Robert Wadlow measured 8 feet 11.1 inches tall when he passed away due to an infection believed to have been caused by a poor fitting leg brace. The casket that was custom made for him was just over 10 feet long and weighed approximately 1,000 pounds. It took about 18 men to carry him to his grave in Oakwood Cemetery in Alton, Illinois.

• The United States Army bought the property that is now known as Jefferson Barracks, in 1826. The Army paid the Village of Carondolet $5 dollars for the property that has become one of the largest national cemeteries in the country.

• The first V.P. Fair opened on July 3, 1983 at the Gateway Arch grounds with an estimated 1.5 million people in attendance. As is true to this time of year in St. Louis, this first fair also experienced heavy rains. It is currently known as Fair St. Louis and has been held in Forest Park the last three years.

• The V.P. in the V.P. Fair actually stands for "Veiled Prophet" and is an organization created in 1878 by a group of prominent St. Louisans to help promote the city of St. Louis.

In a first for the Who's Who in St. Lou Show, I have to release an episode as two episodes.

My guest Julian Barnes and I had such a great & long discussion that I could not see cutting anything from it, so here we are with Part 1 of 2.

On this particular episode, Julian and I discuss what led him to St. Louis and going to school at Lindenwood University while playing Lacrosse. If you are like me and do not really know a whole lot about the sport of Lacrosse, Julian shares a bit about the background of the sport and a very memorable moment playing the game.

We then dive in to talking about his first website and entrepreneurial venture called College Crap that has one heck of an interesting story full of ups and downs that Julian goes into great detail about. College Crap is currently going through a full makeover and rebranding as Julian and his team prepares to relaunch the service.

I am sure that I am not alone in thinking back to the time where we grew up with a consistent set of names and faces who brought us the news day in and day out.

My guest for this episode is one such person.

Don Marsh has, since 1959, been covering the news in a variety of forms while winning numerous awards, such as 12 Regional Emmy Awards, and spent nearly 23 combined years on St. Louis television starting at KTVI when it was the St. Louis ABC affiliate and then moving over to KDNL channel 30 when it became the areas ABC affiliate in August of 1995. Currently you can find Don Marsh on St. Louis Public Radio at 90.7 on your FM dial.

Don is also an author and has written, or co-written a number of books including the following two:

We discuss what led Don to get into covering the news, some of the stories that he has covered that stick out to him the most along with what it was like to be in Baltimore, Maryland during the time that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated as well as how that compared to the recent happenings in Ferguson.

• The first panda to live at the St. Louis Zoo made his debut on June 25, 1939. His name was Happy and was brought to St. Louis by Frank Phillips of the Phillips Petroleum Company. Happy passed away in 1946.

• The St. Louis "Walk of Fame" was dedicated in the Delmar Loop area in University City on June 25, 1989. The first ten inductees were Chuck Berry, Katherine Dunham, James B. Eads, T.S. Eliot, Scott Joplin, Charles Lindbergh, Stan Musial, Vincent Price, Joseph Pulitzer and Tennessee Williams.

• Did you know who Lambert Airport is named after? Lambert Airport was named after Albert Lambert who was a silver medal winner in the 1904 Olympics as part of the mens golf team. Albert Lambert was also the first St. Louis resident to hold a pilots license.
• Did you also know that Lambert Airport used to be one of busiest airports in the United States? At one point there were around 31 million people flying into and out of Lambert Airport.

St. Louis "Did You Know?" bits

• Scott Air Force Base was named after Corporal Frank Scott on July 20, 1917 while the base was in the beginning stages of construction. Corporal Scott was the first enlisted man to die in a plane crash back on September 28, 1912.

• The classic film "Meet Me in St. Louis" was based on a series of autobiographical short stories that was published by the New Yorker and was written by Sally Benson who lived at 5135 Kensington. MGM purchased the screen rights for the stories, of which the film was based on, for $25,000 on March 1, 1942.
