On this special episode of Hub Dialogues, we bring you a curated collection of conversations and remarks from the New North America Summit, hosted by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy. Held earlier this past June, the summit brought together nearly 100 thought leaders—from today’s decision-makers to the next generation of leaders shaping the continent’s future—to explore a forward-looking vision for North America and the practical steps needed to achieve it.
The episode features Washington Post intelligence analyst Luiza Savage on how artificial intelligence is reshaping U.S.-China competition; Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in conversation with Savage on energy security, critical minerals, and North America’s resource advantage; and journalist Tim Alberta on America’s institutional challenges and the populist movements they have helped fuel.
Together, these conversations explore the forces—from pipelines and data centres to rare earth magnets and the physical infrastructure underpinning the modern economy—that will shape which countries are best positioned to thrive in the decades ahead.
This episode is produced in partnership with the New North America Initiative at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. From the shifting ideologies of the new Right and the new Left in the U.S., this multi-month series will bring Canadians inside debates on trade, globalization, and power that are likely to shape America’s policy direction—and Canada’s interests—for the years and decades to come.
The New North America Initiative is generously funded in part by the Government of Alberta.
