Last week, Nkechi left my house. This week, she entered my bank account.

First it was her younger brother. Then her mother. Then her grandmother. Every emergency came with tears, prayers, and an account number.

Then a pastor prayed, a miracle happened, and somehow I became an investor in the Nigerian stock market. I did not ask for any of it.

Meanwhile, an unknown number has been calling my phone since last night. I have a feeling I know who it is.

This is Part Two. The final part.

I went to the cinema yesterday and missed my movie. So I joined the popcorn queue instead.

And then someone tapped my shoulder.

It was a woman I had spent five years looking for. A woman who, one random Tuesday in 2021, sent me a single text message that said "please do not call or text me anymore" and then disappeared completely. No fight. No argument. No explanation.

Yesterday, sitting in a small coffee shop inside that mall, she finally told me why.

What she said next changed the way I understand people. Because the man at the centre of this story was the warmest, most welcoming man I had ever met in someone else's house. Pounded yam. Fisherman soup. Chapman with the little umbrella still in it. Prayers over my head. And a secret he had been carrying for years that had absolutely nothing to do with me.

This episode is about what happens when someone's past writes the ending to your story before you even get a chance to begin it.

The first one is embarrassing. I have a date coming up and I need a girlfriend. Just for one day. I already told the person her name, her complexion, her favourite artist, and her love for singing. I need someone to show up and be her. There are rules. There is a safe word. There is a very specific instruction about pounded yam.

I went to a party to find love.

What followed was the most chaotic night of my life. A truth or dare game that went completely off the rails. A slice of dark chocolate cake that looked completely innocent on that small plate. A girl I was not supposed to talk to. A friend I let down. And a morning I woke up to with a headache the size of a full Yoruba owambe, a ceiling that was not my ceiling, and absolutely no memory of how I got there.

I read an article this week about a man who spent 16 years raising children that were not his. The father of those children was his best friend. The same man he built a business with. The same man he trusted with his life. When I finished reading, I could not close my mouth for five minutes.

But then I remembered I had my own story.

My girlfriend. My best friend. My apartment. One night I came home exhausted from rehearsals, fell asleep, and heard something I was never supposed to hear. I did not move. I did not open my eyes. I just listened.

What I heard that night changed everything. But I did not react immediately. I waited. I watched. I let them both perform their innocence in front of me. And when she finally sat across from me and cried, I watched those tears and remembered exactly what crocodile tears are for.

The crocodile does not cry because it is sorry. It cries because it is hungry.

Why am I still single? Because I studied four years of theatre arts and still could not see the performance happening in my own apartment.
