Why Can't We Be Friends? episodes

  • Bad Weather Friends
Today my guest is healing justice practitioner, artivist, and virgo: Kulkiran Nakai. Kulkiran and I have been friends for a few years and met in the Ann Arbor improv scene. Our friendship story comes from a person, let’s call her Robin — a true adventurer with a Russian nesting doll friendship break-up story of near-death experience and near decades of attempted reconciliation.

  • How to Be the Bigger Friend

Today my guest is mother, educator, Jersey Girl at Heart: Julie Emra. Julie and I have been friends for about 2 years and met because a mutual friend noticed our bellies were the same size (AKA we were pregnancy pals). Our friendship story comes from a person, let’s call her Paloma — a former summer camp counselor with an open door for a friend who’s left her calls unanswered.

  • How To Pin a Social Butterfly

Welcome to the first ever episode of Why Can’t We Be Friends! I’m Lillian Li and I’m kind of obsessed with friendships and friend breakups. I wrote an entire novel, BAD ASIANS, centered on a huge friend breakup, and it’s a topic I feel like so many people share, but also one that not that many people talk about, even though these breakups can be as hard, or sometimes harder, than a romantic breakup.

So I started this podcast, where every episode I take a friendship breakup story shared by an anonymous volunteer, and I go through it with one of my dearest friends: from the conflict to the resolution to the reflections. Throughout we also share our friendship highs and lows.

Today, my guest is Sam Krowchenko, a writer, a bookseller, my friend for 11 years, and my husband for 2. Our friendship breakup story comes from a man I’ll call Peter, who is 88-years-young, a true social butterfly whom I met swimming at a local pond.
