Nephi’s story about obtaining the plates teaches that while the Lord may prepare the way, the way prepared is not always easy. Nephi had to travel 500 miles round trip in a scorching desert and face off with a powerful leader. Nephi wrote this account to illustrate how the Lord would prepare a way for those who obey. He even used a chiasm that focuses on commandments at it's center.
