  • Spice World (1997)

For the upcoming release of Dune: Part 2, the fellas keep the spice flowing with the spiciest movie of the ’90s. It’s Spice World, the Hard Day’s Night riff starring the Spice Girls and pretty much every other British person you can think of. Why is this a thing, innit?

  • Argylle (2024)

Matthew Vaughn returns to the world of quippy spies, dumb action and obnoxious needle drops to deliver one of the biggest box office flops in recent memory. Argylle (note the double “L”s) stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson and a host of other overqualified actors that were surely elated to cash their oversized checks from Apple Inc. Nick, Nico and Adam are here to break down each frame of this cinematic abomination, in an effort to document and count EVERY. SINGLE. TWIST. And much like the studio after checking the box office returns, the numbers may shock you.

  • Accidental Love (2015)

This Valentine’s Day, Why is This a Thing? cordially invites you to get NAILED! Once upon a time, in pre-Obamacare USA, there was a David O. Russell film called Nailed. The biting satire boasted a star-studded ensemble (including Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal and James Marsden) and a how-the-sausage-is-made script from political nepo-baby Kristin Gore. But a tumultuous production left the project incomplete and abandoned until 2015. That year, David O. Russell was coming off of three consecutive best picture nominations, Jake Gyllenhaal’s profile had risen even higher and a plunderous group of producers saw an opportunity to strike while the iron was hot. Thus, a shoddy cut of the film was cobbled together; and where Nailed once stood, Accidental Love rose from the ashes. Nick, Nico and Adam break down all this madness and look for some salvageable remains within the cinematic train wreck.

Just when you thought defrauding the German taxpayer wasn’t bad enough, we’re discussing yet another terrible film by grifter and cinematic hack Uwe Boll. • Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)

The guys cross a historically bad movie off the WiTaT to-do list with the most-reviewed 0% movie in the history of Rotten Tomatoes, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever. Topics discussed include: the bafflingly inaccurate title, the lack of on-screen chemistry between Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu, the physics of exploding cars, the logic behind a gun that fires backwards and, perhaps the greatest villain in all of action filmmaking, Robert Gant.

  • The Rainbow Thief (1990)

It’s another January, which means it’s another opportunity to celebrate the oeuvre of arthouse icon Alejandro Jodorowsky. This time, we’re discussing Jodorowsky’s first and only attempt at a studio job: the much-maligned, little-seen Rainbow Thief, starring Omar Sharif, Peter O’Toole and Christopher Lee.

  • The Santa Clauses: Season 2 (2023)

It’s Christmas on Why is This a Thing, which means it’s once again time to visit the North Pole and check on Scott Calvin’s quirky Clause clan. This season, the unfireable Tim Allen is joined by Eric Stonestreet and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias for a low-stakes holiday caper. Will Bob Iger finally end our suffering and cancel this ho-ho-horrible Disney Plus show? Or will the Santathon remain a WiTaT tradition for years to come?

  • Dream Scenario (2023)

The guys break from their seasonal programming to discuss the much-anticipated Dream Scenario, Nicolas Cage’s fifth big screen performance this year and the one that earned him his first Golden Globe nomination in over two decades. Cage stars as a tenured college professor who becomes a viral sensation of sorts, after mysteriously appearing in the world’s collective consciousness. Nick, Nico and Adam unravel this Charlie Kaufman-esque philosophical premise and evaluate how the film contends with our ridiculous modern world. Plus, music to any podcast listener’s ears: lots and lots of dream talk.
