It’s the unofficial end of summer in Rhode Island, as cooler temperatures and the vibrant colors of autumn leaves begin to appear on the horizon. But although the season is changing, local organizations remain in need of one of our state’s most important resources: volunteers.
Roger Williams Park’s “Drive-Through Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” seeks nightly volunteers for Oct. 1 to Nov. 1 to help the zoo run a ‘spooktacular’ way to enjoy the Halloween season during COVID. Ticketed attendees will stay safe inside their cars while viewing thousands of intricately carved pumpkins. Contact Andrea Crafton: (401) 785-3510 ext. 356 or [email protected].
Save the Bay invites volunteers to participate in its International Coastal Cleanup effort to clean area beaches and record what they find for inclusion in global research on marine debris. Volunteers may join a group cleanup or organize their own with family and friends. Visit savebay.org/volunteer, or contact July Lewis at [email protected] and (401) 272-3540 ext. 130.
RI Free Clinic is in need of doctors and individuals who speak Spanish. Primary Care Doctors are sought to help provide free services to the uninsured, and general volunteers are needed to assist with interpreting, answering phones, and COVID-19 patient intake. Email Sophie Silvia at [email protected], or call (401) 274-6347 ext. 203.

Sunday is “National Taco Day”… What’s the best place in RI to get Tacos?
https://bestthingsri.com/tacos/
With the arrival of fall, organizations across the state are making adjustments to their programming to ensure they safely remain accessible to Rhode Islanders and serving their communities. This week, three of our most recognizable nonprofits are recruiting volunteers for seasonable opportunities with the help of United Way of Rhode Island.
Roger Williams Park is looking for nightly volunteers for its “Drive-Through Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” held Oct. 1 to Nov. 1. Help the zoo run a ‘spooktacular’ way for guests to enjoy the Halloween season during COVID. Ticketed attendees will stay safely inside their cars while viewing thousands of intricately carved pumpkins. For more information, call (401) 684-0037 or email [email protected].
Save the Bay is asking Rhode Islanders to clean up with the Clean Swell App, an easy way to beautify your favorite spots and track what you’ve accomplished. Download the app, start cleaning and record what you pick up. All data goes to the Ocean Conservancy for research on marine debris. This is a great opportunity for those who want to do cleanups on their daily walks or whenever they feel inspired. Learn more and download the app online.
Committed to transforming and building community, WaterFire has focused on creating new and safe events inside and outside its Arts Center. ART MART is an outdoor pop-up art market that connects artists with the community by providing a safe venue to sell their work. It will be held on Oct. 10 and 24, and volunteers are needed to assist. Please contact Katherine Entwistle at [email protected].

While it’s no secret we live in the smallest state in the country, it’s also no surprise that Rhode Islanders have among the biggest hearts you’ll find anywhere. Every day, our family and friends – people across our communities – give the gift of their time by volunteering, and that’s why we partner with the United Way of Rhode Island
During these unpredictable times, it is more important than ever to lend a helping hand if you’re able, particularly in support of our most vulnerable neighbors. Please consider the needs of these three local organizations.
Dare to Dream Ranch, located in Foster, offers no-cost equine therapy programs for service members, veterans and their families who experience PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising efforts and with fall ranch cleanups. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Contact Karen Dalton at [email protected] or (401) 919-2059.
Judy’s Kindness Kitchen in Providence is looking for volunteers to help prepare sandwiches on Sunday mornings that will feed people at Crossroads and Emmanuel House. All ages welcome; those younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Sign up online, or by emailing David Mandelbaum at [email protected].
The Empowerment Factory, a Pawtucket-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing children’s creativity, self-esteem and social-emotional skills, is seeking a volunteer to support its social media efforts, as well as “virtual” interns to help bring arts programming to youth. Those interested should contact Gail Ahlers at [email protected] or (401) 365-1010.

Temperatures are dipping and the season is changing, but one thing remaining the same is the vital role volunteers play in our state and in our communities.
And as we continue to live through an historic and unpredictable time, it is important to consider ways we can all lend a hand and help others.
Higher Ground International seeks help providing food to seniors through its African Elders Enrichment Program. Volunteers are needed to deliver hot meals on Mondays; pack food bags on Wednesdays; and distribute food on Thursdays. Training is provided. To help, sign-up online or by contacting Shemika Moore at [email protected], or (401) 270-3582.
United Way of Rhode Island is hosting a virtual project for National Family Volunteer Day on November 21. Called “Peace Cranes: Envisioning a ‘New Better’ RI,” families are invited to make origami peace cranes while envisioning what they’d like Rhode Island’s post-COVID world to look like. Legend has it that making 1,000 peace cranes makes wishes come true. Following the event, the peace cranes will be placed on display. Contact Janice at [email protected] or (401) 444-0634 to learn more.
The Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Historical Cemeteries is recruiting individuals and groups to help with fall cleanups at the state’s oldest cemeteries. Volunteers will be assigned their own cemetery to rake, prune and perform general maintenance. Contact Pegee Malcolm at [email protected], or (401) 527-1823.
