Today I welcome Bart Tuohey who is a Physiotherapist at Phytness HealthCare in Wollongong. We discuss Bart's career, current trends in private practice, working as a NDIS Physiotherapist, how to market your business, how to manage staff as a business owner and much more.
Everything you thought you knew about back pain, posture and technique is wrong. (Or at least maybe a little misguided).
Like any industry, there are great physios, and there are poor physios. I wanted to bring Andrew on to provide some insight, some perspective, and some practical take homes so you feel better equipped at knowing who to trust.
We cover:
- What's missing in physiotherapy education.
- Why your core is not the problem.
- How to address hamstring "tightness".
- An updated perspective on posture.
- Why your technique is probably OK.
- The role of genetics in sport.
- How to pick a physio.
Please consider taking a couple of minutes to throw up a podcast review on your favourite platform. It really helps the show. Thanks for your support!

Today I welcome Lachie Wilmot and Karl Goodman who are the co-owners of Athletes Authority. We discuss how you would begin a S&C career, if university degrees such as Exercise & Sport Science, Exercise Physiology and/or a Masters of S&C are important to further your career, S&C career progression with and without university, their revolutionary business and much more.
This week, Andrew Wild from Wild Physio Fitness joins Michael Dermansky to explore the different benefits of strength training and cardio training so you can make an informed decision around which is right for you.
Andrew is a physiotherapist as well as a strength and conditioning coach who has merged the two fields to become a hybrid therapist. The discussion covers the many (surprising) benefits of strength training, and the recommended amount of strength training most people should do each week.
Armed with this information, you'll be better equipped to develop an exercise program that harnesses the benefits of each type of training no matter what your life stage and style. You'll be able to overcome injury sooner, minimise the risk of future injury and illness, and get the most out of your body so you can live life to the fullest.
Today I welcome Alexis Léveillé and Dr. Jacob Templar for a roundtable discussion. We discuss injury risk while lifting weights, how lifting belts can help your strength gains, why movement screenings don't predict injury, unnecessary surgeries and much more.
Today I welcome Dr. Kim Slater who is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. We discuss the mechanism of injury for high ankle sprains/syndesmosis injuries, imaging for syndesmosis injuries, screw vs. tightrope surgical techniques for syndesmosis injuries and much more.
Today I welcome Elisabetta Brigo who is a Physiotherapist from northern Italy. Elisabetta has recently started her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at Hasselt University in Belgium. We discuss why you can't prevent back pain by avoiding so called 'incorrect postures', why there is no such thing as 'correct' or 'perfect' posture, why there is no spinal curvature that is strongly associated with pain, why we should not be afraid of butt wink and much more. FYI: the use of smartphones is poorly correlated with neck pain and disability! Elisabetta didn't hear that question correctly.
Today I welcome Dr. James O'Sullivan who is an Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon from Newcastle, Australia. We discuss the mechanism of achilles tendon ruptures, how to treat achilles tendon ruptures, operative vs. non operative treatment of achilles tendon ruptures and much more.
Today I welcome Monique Le Mottee who is a Physiotherapist and strength & conditioning coach who works at Athletes Authority, Macquarie University AFL and West Tigers NRL. We discuss whether trans women should be allowed to compete in women's sport, the menstrual cycle, RED-S and much more.
Today I welcome Geoff Ford, Alexis Léveillé and Dr. Jacob Templar for a roundtable discussion. We discuss pain education, our experiences with pain and injuries, if you should perform mobility programs, ACL injuries, what you should hear from your therapist and much more.
