Hear several issues brought before the Salem City Council. The crux of the report was devoted to the status of the 3rd bridge proposal. Other issues included: Salem Housing Authority, proclamation commemorating the Oregon Black Pioneers, and concern about religious prayer before the State of the City address.

The state Senate committee on Housing held a public hearing Monday afternoon on Senate Bill 608, which is already being called the nation’s first statewide rent-control law…if it passes. The measure would set a once-a-year limit on rent increases, and limit the amount the rent can go up.  Willamette Wakeup correspondent Stella Shaffer has testimony at the public hearing on this bill.

Today’s snowy start may bring back bad memories for the state’s new labor commissioner – Val Hoyle and members of her family survived a head-on crash on Thanksgiving Day, when snow and ice on the roads around her Springfield home sent another driver into the oncoming lane. All parties escaped with bruises after the crash. Val Hoyle was elected Oregon’s State labor commissioner last year, after Brad Avakian stepped down.

Jan & Cindy give a rundown on active legislation for the week of Feb 4th and talk with John Ledger, a retired lobbyist on environmental issues. Ledger emphasizes how citizens can most effectively influence their legislators.

Michael Rose interviews Rep. Paul Evans about legislative issues and specifically bills introduced by this Mid-Valley legislator, including one that would challenge corporations being a "person.”

Laurie Dougherty and Gary Wallmark, 350 Salem, talked about the latest news on the proposed Jordan Cove Liquid Natural Gas in So. Oregon and a "Clean Energy Jobs" bill in the legislature. They encouraged listeners to get involved and specific actions people could take right now by going to their website.

KC, Salem Democratic Socialists of America, talks about the organization's roots, mission and how to get involved locally. KC also invite the public to a "community conversation" about socialist feminism being held at the Salem Library, Sun. February 3rd at 2 pm.

It's year number three of "Salem Reads," a community-wide shared reading program with a whole month of exciting activities wrapped around the book and its author. Willamette Wakeup host Stella Shaffer talks with the library foundation's Kate van Ummerson about the kickoff for this year's program.

Scott Schlegel reports on the topics discussed by Salem City Council to prioritize in 2019. Topics included sustainable resources, library services, sobering center, sidewalks, congestion relief and more. Council also interviewed a candidate for the Planning Commission.
