Another strong female role in this film is that of Marigold, played by Abbey Lee, who lives with Ellen and her well-meaning husband Walt. Other strong female roles are those of Ella Hunt, who plays a British settler traveling west with her husband, and Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays Diamond, who is traveling west with her sisters and has the makings of a sweet storyline in the future. Despite the large cast, Costner makes an effort to introduce each member of the group here, starting with the fascinating Sam Worthington character of First Lt. Trent Gephardt, a soldier stationed at Fort Gallant who is unsure of who he is and where he is headed in this strange new world. The empathetic Col. Houghton, played by Danny Huston, is overburdened by the influx of settlers, but he is certain that more will come.

Zara deserves our sympathy for the way she was handled. But as soon as she starts whining about the men her mother is seeing, our support instantly shifts to her mother. While Zara's struggle to better herself is depicted over the majority of the image, it falls short of offering a more satisfying redemptive ending. Chris's storyline is distinct from the female characters he is directly involved with, but there is no compelling force behind his impending transformation. Additionally, it boasts to itself in an annoyingly self-congratulatory manner when the two best friends are having a late-night chat. It's entertaining to watch Efron poke fun of self-absorbed Hollywood types with this flimsy frivolity, but it's a shame the

directors didn't go for more.

If anything, Nash makes use of this information for some dark humor, as we witness the usual disputes in the woods and flirtations by the pool turn violent without requiring a jump scare. However, Nash is also aware that we require a tangible object to anchor our fervor, which is why Johnny's murders are among the most horrific and graphic in recent memory. A yoga-mad girl gets stretched out more than she bargained for; heads get slowly chopped in half against a tree; and a log splitter gets utilized in all the ways your wicked mind could imagine. The kids give it their all in an attempt to defend themselves or flee, and as Johnny lumbers toward them without skipping a stride, their impotence becomes increasingly comical.

As you watch him slowly slog his way to his next victim, this strategy can be a bit tiresome at times. You can't wait for him to simply get to it. Even though I was a little annoyed by Johnny's slow motion, I soon saw how it affected my experience watching when he wasn't on camera. When Johnny isn't the main character, Nash's choice of point of view is brilliant. You can't help but stare around, listen, and wonder where Johnny was going to be when he's not on camera. Knowing that must be directly out of your field of vision is unsettling. This film's intrigue stems from its twisting of the general viewpoint.

Given that he has won two Oscars for his last two films and is probably going to return to making high-profile films in the future, "Kinds of Kindness" might be viewed in the end as a side project in what I believe will be a lengthy career of critically lauded works. Even if it turns out to be a minor incident in his career, it serves as a stark reminder of how lacking in self-assurance and desperation Lanthimos is to follow his passions, whether or not others share his enthusiasm. In all three of the film's segments, Stone, along with her main co-stars Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, and Hong Chau, each portray a distinct persona. She plays Rita, a young lady enchanted, in the first section.

The fact that Squibb contributes so much to "Thelma" makes it such a charming little movie. A film that could have easily transformed the elderly into easy targets for humor or maudlin sentimentality is restrained by a masterful performance. Squibb masterfully balances the difficult tonal tightrope between absurd humor and realism in this scene. Additionally, Margolin deftly and subtly inserts concepts into "Thelma" without overdoing it. One such instance is when Thelma goes to see a woman who doesn't know Danny. Although Thelma is a strong, self-assured lady, the movie is also about friendship and the kinds of connections that define us, such as that between a grandma and her granddaughter.

Because the plot and its cast of characters are too large and badly designed to be mere copies of people from Lyons' photographs, Nichols never manages to draw the reader back in. Butler is largely absent from the second part of the movie, so it doesn't turn into a huge elegy for a more innocent time. It turns into meaningless, made-up scenes with actors dressing up. Perhaps there is some merit to that artifice, particularly in a movie about men who choose to adopt the personas of counterculture icons rather than fall for the American dream fallacy. However, without someone like Butler to capture our interest, the movie loses its focus and becomes too dull to make us feel sorry for the era it attempts to represent.
