What if you always felt in control or had the tools to know how to create power in any situation? Do you find yourself owning situations or do situations own you? 

There are many ways to create power in life and doing so will enable you to feel more in control of any situation. The beauty of power is that it's simple to some degree, but it requires work and practice.

Over the years of studying experts and treating myself as a science experiment, I've adopted several mindset hacks to create power of which I will share 3 of my favorites:

1. Find the GOOD. When there's bad, there's good. Create an instinct to find the good first. Jocko Willink is extremely GOOD at this and I learned this trick from studying him several years ago.
2. Switch "Have To" with "Get To." Doing so promotes joy.
3. Adopt the 5&5 Rule. Avoid an "amygdala highjacking" by asking yourself if something that's bugging you in the moment will truly bug you 5 minutes or 5 days from now. 99% of the time, the answer is no.

Own your mind and create power in every aspect of life.

One book that made a big impact on me in 2021 is Who Not How by Dan Sullivan.

When you ask yourself "How" you're going to accomplish something, you then begin thinking about all of the actions that will follow and how you may have to do everything. That can be stressful at times.

Rather than always thinking about HOW to do something, think about WHO can help you accomplish that thing. For every goal that you write down, WHO can help you get there?

With all of my goals and big objectives moving forward, I'm certainly going to be asking WHO is going to help me get there and alleviate unnecessary stress.

Do not be defined by a title or an award.
It's important to separate role and identity - a key lesson that I've learned in transformational leadership. A CEO title does not define a strong leader nor does an Ivy League education define an intelligent person. There's more to it.

My new favorite question to ask at the beginning of each podcast episode is this "What's something that's not on your resume or bio that makes you really proud and why?" This was inspired by Dr. Troy Hall who is a friend, mentor, and brother to me. Asking this question gets someone to reveal who they truly are at the heart regardless of what title or status they have in this world.

You'll never see my greatest accomplishment as a title or line item in my resume or bio because it's the continuous impact that's generated in the lives of others. There's a reason why there are no walls in my home filled with my awards; that's not what drives me. The greatest accomplishment is creating an impact in another life and in my case that's by fulfilled by teaching others how to overcome obstacles and be intentional through goal setting.

Chase impact, not awards or titles.

Being "tough" isn't solely based on physical nature, contrary to what many may believe. Steve Magness is on a mission to share the nuances of toughness and what it truly means. Although Steve is well known for being one of the fastest runners in the United States while he was in High School with a 4:01 mile time and he doesn't credit his toughness being able to run very fast.

While he does believe it's important to push yourself and do hard things, hence the title of his book, there must be connection between the difficult training or task and the mission. This is often missed, especially in the sporting world as Steve notes through his research in the book.

Toughness is a wise action as defined by Steve. Sometimes we may be faced with the decision to persist knowing that it could lead to catastrophic failure or walk away knowing that the timing isn't right. Toughness is being able to make the right call.

Establishing toughness, the ability to take wise action, is best accomplished through creating control. Steve shares four key tips on how to create control which in turn will allow you to build toughness personally and professionally. Tune in and learn more!

We are responsible for our success, yet I would be willing to bet that you alone are not responsible for everything that you've achieved and earned. Someone likely played a minor or major influence in you earning various things whether it be a job, winning a sporting event, etc.

It's important to remember these people and keep a running list of who is responsible for getting you to the point that you're at right now. I maintain a running list of people in my life who have had a deep impact on me. There are a lot of people who are responsible for my success and I never want to lose sight of them and I want to ensure that I thank them on a recurring basis, especially once the opportunity comes for me to be on some big time stages.
