The Bible paints a picture of God that is complex and deep. But it could be easy in our desire to understand God or our fear of not being in control of everything, to reduce God to a simple, easily understood character. Because nobody likes to feel like things are happening they don’t understand. But if understanding God was simple, we would never be surprised by God. God would show up exactly how we expect every time. And that sense of certainty, while comforting, prevents us from seeing God as God really is.
