transgender woman who described feeling like a “sex slave” while incarcerated in several men’s prisons across Illinois has been transferred to a women’s prison after a yearlong court fight.

Strawberry Hampton, 27, was moved in recent days to Logan Correctional Center, a female facility in Lincoln, about 160 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, her attorneys said. Hampton was most recently held at Dixon Correctional Center, a maximum-security men’s prison in northwest Illinois.

“We are thrilled,” said Vanessa del Valle, one of Hampton’s lawyers with the MacArthur Justice Center. “Strawberry has waited a long time for this transfer. She has been battling for a year in court to have (the Illinois Department of Corrections) recognize her as a woman and protect her from the constant abuse and discrimination in men’s prisons.”

A former Lehigh University student is accused of trying to poison his longtime roommate to death and vandalizing the victim's possessions with racist graffiti, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli announced Thursday morning.

Yukai Yang, a 22-year-old Chinese national, is charged with attempted murder and related charges, Morganelli said. He was earlier charged with ethnic intimidation. 

Investigators first zeroed in on the suspect after his roommate, who is African American, reported earlier this year that his belongings had been vandalized and scrawled with the N-word, Morganelli said.

Nicole Parsons said she was fed up with her university's silence over a string of hate crimes on campus when she put up a sign in her dorm window that read "FUCK NAZIS YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE."

Parsons, a junior at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, told BuzzFeed News on Sunday that she decided to put up the sign after a swastika was drawn over a "Happy Hanukkah" sign on a resident assistant's door the first week of December. "I thought maybe if I hang the sign up, maybe the person who drew the swastika will see it and see someone condemning their actions, even if the administration doesn’t do it," she said.

Virginia’s governor announced plans this week to stop suspending driver’s licenses for unpaid court fines and fees, a change that could affect more than 600,000 people.

A Washington Post analysis earlier this year found that more than 7 million people nationwide may have had their driver’s licenses suspended for failure to pay court or administrative debt, a practice that advocates say unfairly punishes the poor. A spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles said 626,537 drivers had their licenses suspended as of Dec. 1 for failure to pay such costs.

Clarksburg, WV- A transgender boy in West Virginia says that he was bullied by a school official in a bathroom. Michael Critchfield, 15, said that he just wanted to use the bathroom at Liberty High School, before getting on the bus for a band trip. He went to the boys room and made sure no one was in it – something he has been in the habit of doing to avoid conflict.

What should have been a simple trip to the bathroom suddenly turned into a humiliating ordeal last month when Critchfield’s assistant principal allegedly burst in and began to berate and bully the student over his gender identity.
