Hike-It-Baby introduces children from infants all the way to school aged kids and their families to hiking in the outdoors.  Hike-It-Baby has branches all throughout the United States and has 10 branches throughout Wisconsin.  Today I’m talking with Jami Rogers, the Co-Branch Ambassador for Hike-It-Baby for the Appleton Area.   We talked about getting kids outdoors and introducing them to hiking, the type of support you get when you hike with the group and why this is such a great way for families to get out and hike.

Imaging yourself sitting out on the water, fishing pole in one hand and sun shining down on you.  It’s the perfect way to spend the day.  Nothing but you and open waters.   Fishing season is here and that means it’s time to enjoy some quality time with buddies and see who can reel in the big one.  Today I’m talking to Bob LeRoy, the newly elected president of the Wisconsin Fishing Club. 

I talked with Bob about some things to remember as the fishing season gets underway and he offers some tips for some one interested in getting into the sport of fishing.

During this time we can be filled with negative story after negative story.  This group fights with this group about when to reopen or what the next step should be.  I say don’t worry about things you can’t control; enjoy the things you can control.  You can control how you react to all of this. You can control how you spend your time.  Spring is here, get out an enjoy this time with your family.  Take your pets for more walks than they want.  Feel the sunshine on your face and take advantage of this time you’ve been given as you head out to be one of Wisconsin’s Outdoor Explorers.

I think I can safely say that most of here in Wisconsin are ready for warmer days.  I’m getting tired of cold mornings and having to bundle up if I want to go for a walk.  I’m ready for warm sunshine on my face and smelling the flowers.  My guest today is also looking forward to seeing the flowers bloom and not just because he likes their beauty.  You see flowers and blossoms are a huge part of his life and business.  Where there are blossoms, so are his bees.  Today I’m talking with Kent Pegorsch.  Kent has been a beekeeper for over 40 years and is currently the president of Wisconsin Honey Producers.  I wanted to find out from Kent what it takes to keep bees and what are some thing you can do to help bees in your area.   Of course, we also talked about honey and the impact the honey industry has on Wisconsin agriculture.

Having a garden and caring for plants is a great way to get outdoors. The hours that can be spent caring for your outdoor plants can be relaxing and refreshing. I wanted to learn more and that’s why on this podcast I asked Stephanie O’Neal, the president of the Wisconsin Hardy Plant Society. Spring is officially here and that means the snow turns to rain. And at times, those April showers turn in severe weather. Do you now what you would do if severe weather happens and you’re out on a hike or floating down a river?  This week, I’m bringing back Justin Poublon from Wisconsin Weather to talk a little bit about severe weather in Wisconsin.  What things we should watch for and I asked him to give us a few tips if you find yourself out on the trails if severe weather should pop up.

As most of us living in Wisconsin know, the spring season can be finicky.  One day it’s 50 degrees and you’re ready to break out the shorts for the year and then the next day it’s back down to 20 degrees and you’re shoveling 6 inches of snow.  These swings in the weather are pretty much normal for Wisconsin and we learn to live with them.  However, they can make getting out for a nice hike a bit tricky.  I want to offer you a few tips to think about before you head out the door for that spring hike.

The process of tapping trees and turning sap into syrup is a time-honored tradition here in Wisconsin.  It’s another sign that spring is on its way and collecting sap is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy those early warm spring days.  But have you ever been curious on the process of going from sap to syrup?  And have you ever wanted to try and make your own?
