  • S2XTRA2 - Interview w/Christian "Elgar" Seaborn
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
We've got "Elgar"!! Christian Seaborn is the 4'11" comic actor who brought the memorable attorney "Elgar Neece" to life on the WKRP Episode "Mike Fright". The WKRP-Cast found Elgar...er, Christian...who is living in Reno, NV.  You know how how high-energy Elgar is? There's a lot of Christian in Elgar...we got him to hold still for a few minutes and talk to us!! Christian was kind enough to Zoom about WKRP and his MTM Studio experiences. Get ready, gang...Elgar is gonna blow you away! Did you know that extremely tall Funeral Director Randall Ferryman (played by Fred Stuthman) almost had a 4'11" executive assistant?!? Neither did we!! NOBODY did!! Christian tells the tale.  Christian had a ton of involvement with the show AND he was actually consulted on the creation of the "Elgar" character!

If you thought you knew all the backstage details about the Mighty 'KRP...get ready. Christian is adding chapters to the tale!! Hang up your briefcase phone, put your Italian pistol away and hit "play"...it's time to listen to your lawyer!!

    ********
In the episode, we mention the article done on Christian by "Our Town Reno."  It's a very well done piece that covers his early performing life and gets into the very trying period following his work on WKRP.  It's a period Christian would rather not discuss, but he did give us permission to share the article. Here's a link if you'd like to check it out:

  • S2XTRA1 - Interview with Janet Meshad-Wells
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
Settle in kids, and prepare for a thrilling tale of yesteryear!! Okay, so maybe it's not quite THAT old...but this is going back a bit.  In Atlanta in the early 1970s, an advertising executive was dealing with a demon. It was the Demon of Creativity, and it was forcing him to write and to create. This ad exec's name, of course, was Hugh Wilson. The thing he was driven to create all the way back in 1971 had a name: "The Bagel Report."  The Bagel Report, or TBR as we've started calling it, was a full-length movie. It was a comedy...a sex-comedy, actually...in the style of Woody Allen. TBR skewered modern sexual research and attitudes...even the name was a jab at "The Kinsey Report." TBR was baudy enough to get an "X" rating...but nobody was having sex. Hugh even said, if there'd been MORE sex it probably would have been a better movie. Every aspect of TBR was Hugh's baby from inception to production. He wrote, directed, produced, financed, cast and even got the coffee for "The Bagel Report."

VERY little is known about TBR. Only a handful have ever seen it. We were lucky enough to find someone who was IN THE BAGEL REPORT!! Janet Meshad-Wells is the wife of WKRP Music Director Tom Wells (1941-2012), an actress, and was a personal friend of Hugh Wilson. Janet was not only a part of the TBR cast, she did two scenes WITH Hugh Wilson. Janet mixed up a cocktail and got down to details with us. She talked Bagel Report, Hugh Wilson, Bill Dial, Hollywood, Atlanta and a WHOLE lot more! Our conversation is fast-paced, full of great details and, towards the end, possibly a bit tipsy. Yes, those are ice cubes you hear clinking in a glass. You should probably choose your own libation if you are so inclined before you hit 'play'...as Janet says, if we're talking about Hugh Wilson, we should really be drinking.

  • S1XTRA2-Interview with "Sparky" Marcus Issoglio
    WELCOME BACK!
Hey, Fellow Babies! We've finished all of Season One!! Woo-hoo!! We thought we'd celebrate the turn of the seasons with something EXTRA.  If you heard our "Young Master Carlson" episode, then you're already very aware that Marcus Issoglio (aka "Sparky Marcus") is a NUT! This guy is FUNNY! We had a great time Zooming with him for about 90 minutes one Saturday afternoon. That interview was the source of the comments you heard in our "Young Master Carlson" podcast.

Although he did not set out to be a child actor (it was all mom and dad's doing) and he did NOT have a good childhood because of his job...Marcus still amassed some amazing stories. As much as he didn't enjoy the life of a child actor, he WAS working in the middle of an era many call the "Second Golden Age" of Television. He met and worked with stars who both were, and  have become, huge icons. We set out to limit our interview to his experiences on WKRP.  The rest of his career was not a fun time, so no need to bring any of THAT up, right?

Ah, but things got loose...we started talking...and he started remembering these AMAZING stories!! When it was all through, we not only had everything we needed for the podcast, we had SO much more! After getting Marcus' approval and permission, we decided we HAD to let you guys hear this stuff!! It's not ALL WKRP...but, wow, there is a lot of KRP mixed in there. Just when you think we're done with KRP...we go right back!!

A tip: even if you're not into the interview...you HAVE to stay until the "Star Wars" story. Seriously, listen to the "Star Wars" story, then you can shut it off. It is TOTALLY worth the wait!

Enjoy, Fellow Babies!! Next time you hear from us, we'll be back on the MTM Lot and Season Two will be getting underway!! Talk to you then!!  - Allen & Donna

  • S1XTRA1-Bill Dial's "Turkeys Away" Outline
    WELCOME BACK!
Hey, Fellow Babies! Prepare yourselves for something COMPLETELY different! We're on a holiday break but we didn't want to leave you hanging for a full two weeks. So, we decided to do a little something "extra"...which is why we're calling this a "WKRP-Cast Extra"!! Huge thanks to Casey Piotrowski, writer of "Contest Nobody Could Win" for sharing the outline with us. Casey said they were handed out during a new writer's meeting in the fall of 1978. The "Turkeys Away" outline served as an example..."do it like this." Turns out, the 'outline' is actually a narrative description of the episode, complete with character lines and everything! When we first read through it, we thought, "this is kinda cool...you can sorta see the episode in there...". We decided a good way to share it with you would be to read it...word-for-word, start to finish. A lot easier to digest than a downloadable PDF, but if you want a downloadable PDF of the script in case you want to follow along, here's that, too:

  • S1E14 - "Johnny Comes Back"

    WELCOME BACK!
Johnny's been gone for about two weeks and the gang is on EDGE! It doesn't help matters that sleazy record company promo man Murray Gressler is sniffing around. Murray will do just about anything to get his records played. Andy should have known better than to hire the deejay Murray recommended, but he needed to get the time slot filled! Doug Winner, the new morning man, turns out to be a smiling but shifty jerk who's willing to throw Johnny under the bus to protect his precious Coke supply (and we don't mean the cola kind).  The WKRP-Cast is nothing but "Miami Vice" and Odor Eaters this week! It'll make more sense when you push "play" and join us!!

  • S1E13 - "Goodbye, Johnny"

    WELCOME BACK!
Something strange is happening around the ol' KRP Ranch. It's 14 degrees but Johnny is playing Beach Boys like it's the Fourth of July! (at least, it's some bargain basement semblance of Beach Boys on the ol' Shout! Factory disks). We discover the good Doctor has been called to practice back in L.A. The competitor to the station that fired him over the whole "Booger" thing has come calling with a GREAT offer! Will Johnny head for huge bucks, sunny skies and sweet revenge? Can the gang keep Johnny in Cincinnati?? It's a plot laced with high stakes, deceit and Jennifer's...um...charms! It's a story so big it might not get told in one WEEK!! Knock back another strong one with Art and pull up a chair. We've got some war stories to tell and they aren't going to get told with you sitting at home! Button up your brains and haul out your tux, fellow babies! The WKRP-Cast is headed to "The Cricket" and we've got  reservations! Push "play" to join us!!

Take cover!! It's the attack of the Godless Tornadoes! Hey, fellow babies...Allen and Donna Stare here! On this episode of the "WKRP-Cast" bells will be ringing...on Les' teletype machine!  A pack of killer tornadoes has descended on the Ohio Valley. Fearless Newsman Les Nessman is on it...or, at least he would be if he weren't stuck in an elevator. Oh, yeah...his teletype machine is also unplugged. It's a long story that gets really weird when the Japanese businessmen show up (they're our allies now, you know). Board up the windows and batten down the hatches, there's terror on the 14th floor!! • S1E11 - "The Contest Nobody Could Win" (w/Casey Piotrowski)

    WELCOME BACK!
Hang on, fellow babies, we're SUPERSIZED!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! On this episode of the "WKRP-Cast", we tackle one of life's greatest mysteries: are there actually two endings to this episode? And, if there are, WHY???  Johnny blew it when he missed the decimal point on Andy's contest memo. The "big prize" was fifty bucks. Johnny read it as FIVE THOUSAND!! No sweat, we'll just make the contest impossible to win! KRP listeners are obviously musical savants. EVERYBODY is figuring out the impossible puzzle. When it comes time to award the cash, will Johnny Save the Day? Or, will Johnny Have to Pay? He actually winds up doing BOTH!! This is the weirdest, wildest, strangest little detour you'll take in WKRP-land, which is why we invited a very special detour guide: episode writer CASEY PIOTROWSKI joins us with comments and insight!! The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies and  strap in. The Bozo-puter might overheat before we're done with this one. You ARE seeing double!! Hit 'play' to find out why!!

  • S1E09 - "Mama's Review"

    WELCOME BACK!
Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! It's time for another episode of the "WKRP-Cast"...and we've been retooled! Well, we haven't, but the SHOW is supposed to have undergone a major overhaul. Did it? Not so much, thanks to the curmudgeonly behavior of our hero, Mr. Hugh Wilson. This is, oddly for first season, a clip show...with about 14 minutes of new stuff, PLUS an all new "Mama Carlson." We get into what it was like to watch TV back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the mystery of the cold open, the insanity of network suits and the return of one of the funniest shows on TV...now comfortably seated right behind mega-hit "M*A*S*H"!! What could go wrong...right?? Well, it IS WKRP. Don't count on anything good to last for too long. The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies, Mama's here and she doesn't look happy. Is your resume up-to-date? Time to hit 'play' and hope she's in a good mood !!

YOU KNOW YOU MAKE US WANNA...
No shouts in the show, but we did want to take a minute to say a BIG 'Thank You' to Michael Hernandez, the Accountant of Rock. Mike is doing some amazing forensic research regarding the scheduling of WKRP throughout its original run on network. He is doing the digital equivalent of haunting newspaper graveyards and dusty stacks in library attics. His research is yielding some fascinating stuff and we are so glad he is willing to share the highlights with us. We hope to be hitting Mike up in the future regarding show ratings and scheduling. It's all part of what made and influenced the creation of WKRP so we love getting into it!

    WELCOME BACK!
Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! It's time for another episode of the "WKRP-Cast"...and...well. Okay, so this is bad. Really bad. If you don't know this episode, consider yourself lucky. If you DO know this episode, please keep reading. We know superfans who will NOT watch this one...but we're giving it a shot! After last week's AMAZING "Turkeys Away" episode, the fine folks at MTM...or CBS...or somebody said this should be the follow-up to one of the greatest half hours in television. This is very bad all on its own...but when you put it up against "Turkeys" it becomes monumentally bad in comparison. If you should happen to like this episode, we hope you have a sense of humor. If you REALLY like this episode...you'd probably better not listen. The other 99.897% of you are going to have a blast. Things get comedically bloody...claws come out...hair color is questioned...you'll have fun in spite of the horrific episode, we promise!! The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies, this one is about as bad as it can possibly get. Hold your nose and hit 'play' !!
