  • S1E05 - "Hold Up"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! Welcome back to another episode of the "WKRP-Cast." Be careful...you might not be ready for Hamilton Camp!! We're headed to Del's Stereo for "Hold Up". Herb sold a remote down at Del's Stereo and Sound. Johnny gets roped into doing talent for the gig (on a Saturday!). Del is such a ball of nervous energy he's just short of exploding. When a gunman walks in on the remote things get really weird. When he wants on the air, you know you could only be watching an episode of WKRP!! Remember the old tuner you had that could double as a boat anchor?? Del probably sold it to you! We've got a Union Broadcast Engineer with a 'tude, an out of work deejay with a gun AND we're going to find out just what the heck a "Wingy Menone" is!! We might even do a little target practice on some speakers. The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies, and don't miss it!!

OH YEAH!! After the ep, we'll be doing some shout outs to friends and listeners. You can completely skip it if you want...you won't miss any episode goodies...but, then again, you never know. We might be talking about you!!

Enjoy the trivial goodness being laid down by The Accountant of Rock! Here is the link to Mike's work:

[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog"  episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. The Shout Factory complete series box has a release date of 2014. All individual seasons of Shout Factory disks were released starting in 2015.]Hey Fellow Babies!! We talked to Gary Sandy. • S1E04 - "Hoodlum Rock" (w/Michael Des Barres)
Send a note to Allen & Donna…Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! Welcome back to another episode of the "WKRP-Cast." Huge episode this week!! It's time for some "Hoodlum Rock". Any new rock-n-roll station is only as good as the concerts it can land. WKRP has lucked into hosting one of the first concerts in the states from hot new band  "Scum of the Earth." Turns out Art's old buddy Stevie Peevy reps Scum in Cincinnati. We determine the origins of the term "Scum of the Earth". We discover a whole new genre of music where the band physically attacks the audience and, HOLY KRP!! WE HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL DES BARRES WHO APPEARS IN THE EPISODE!! The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies, and don't miss it!!

  • COMPLETE: Howard Hesseman Tribute - "The Dr. Johnny Fever Aircheck"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…[THIS IS THE COMPLETE DR. JOHNNY FEVER AIRCHECK - Completed 10/29/22. Attention Sharp-eared Fellow Babies! If you should hear a missed clip of Johnny ON THE AIR, please drop us a note to [email protected] so we can add it to the aircheck.

EDIT: We added Johnny's fill-in advice segment at the end of "Ask Jennifer" on 11/7/22. It falls between "Dr. Fever and Mr. Tide" and "I Am Woman."]

HEY, FELLOW BABIES!! Welcome to a Special Release from the WKRP-Cast!
In order to improve your performance as a deejay, it was important to hear yourself on the air. The process of recording yourself and listening back to your show was called doing an "air check." Usually, a Program Director would require on-air staff to air-check themselves anywhere from once a week to once a month. After a jock has air-checked their show, they would sit down with the PD and critique the content. They might discuss anything from what headlines or news bits the talent selected as talk topics to presentation to attitude to verbal tics. For instance, Johnny says "alright" an awful lot. A good PD would point something like that out and have him work on being aware of it and reducing how many times he says it.

Since an air-check is about the deejay, there was no need for a PD to sit through a lot of music. They only wanted to hear the performer's bits and intros. This is where the "skimmer" or "air check machine" came into play. A skimmer was a cassette deck in the control room taking a feed from the program 'out' of the board. Everything coming off the board went through the skimmer. The on-off switch for the skimmer was connected to the board mic switch. When the deejay turned on the mic, the skimmer started recording. Whatever was happening at the moment the mic was turned on would be captured on the skim tape. It might be the end of a song, the last few words of a spot, the final sign-off from a newscast, etc. The skimmer would then record whatever the deejay says while the mic is on.

As soon as the deejay turned the mic off, the skimmer would stop. A deejay doesn't normally turn the mic off immediately after they stop talking. This meant the skimmer might capture the first few bars of the next song or a few words of the first spot played in the next stop set. At the end of a shift, the skim tape would only contain whatever the deejay had said throughout the four or five hours of their show. A lot of deejays would keep these air-check tapes, especially when they had a good shift. Air-check tapes are not only a great tool for the Program Director to use. They are also a fantastic tool for a deejay to use to land another job.

We decided to create Dr. Johnny Fever's air-check. This is a collection of only those things Johnny has said OVER THE AIR while on WKRP. It's edited the same way an air-check or skim tape would have sounded in the 1980s, with no fades and beep tones between segments. We've pulled every Johnny talk bit from Pilot Part One all the way through to "Up and Down the Dial" (In Shout! Factory episode order).

  • S1E03 - "Les on a Ledge"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! Welcome back to another session of the "WKRP-Cast."  We're breaking down a new episode!! This week, it's "Les on a Ledge". After a misunderstanding at "the Stadium" Les is barred from post-game locker-room interviews. A player believes Les is homosexual. The news is so distressing it pushes Les onto the ledge of the Flimm building...or, at least SOME building (the Flimm building doesn't have ledges...but we can't let something like that get in the way of a good script!) Of course there's going to be a "Herb Tarlek Fashion Alert".  We meet America's first prime-time pothead (hint: you already know him). We have unidentified firemen, Shakespearean monologues and a fall from either the ninth or fourteenth floor of the Flimm building. This one is truly crazy, fellow babies!! The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains and tell the Doctor where it hurts!!

  • S1E02 - "Pilot Part TWO"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! Welcome back to another episode of the "WKRP-Cast."  We've watched another episode of "WKRP in Cincinnati" to the extreme!! This week, we break down "Pilot Part 2". Andy has been at the station for two weeks. He wants to promote the change to Rock-n-Roll. Mr. Carlson won't give him the money. Disgruntled listeners stage a protest in the station. We meet great one-off characters this time like "Buzzy Milker", "Mrs. Burstyn" and "Wayne R. Coe." Of course there's a "Herb Tarlek Fashion Alert" and we've got a new feature: "The Committee Connection."  We also indulge a little "no more mama" conspiracy theory regarding a very weird scene in this episode (you can help solve the mystery!). And...where were they playing bingo again? (we're still not sure...) Fellow babies, the WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains and don't miss it!!

  • S1E01 - "Pilot Part ONE"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WE ARE IN RE-RUNS! Enjoy this encore presentation.

Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! Welcome back fellow babies to another episode of the "WKRP-Cast."  We've watched the Pilot (Part ONE) of "WKRP in Cincinnati." We've picked it apart to the extreme and we're ready to talk about it!!  We meet, for the first time ever, the staff and ownership of Cincinnati radio station WKRP. The "Big Guy" (Art Carlson, station...owner?) has hired hotshot new program director Andy Travis, most recently from Santa Fe. Andy is our way in as we meet the wacky staff of the station. We are introduced to the iconic characters that make up the WKRP crew: Arthur, Herb, Les, Jennifer, Bailey, Venus and over-the-hill (?) morning man Dr. Johnny Fever. Learn the real story behind why Les is always bandaged as part of our first regular feature: "The Les Nessman Bandage Report." We expose...or, actually, cover-up...'Nipplegate.' We answer burning questions, like how exactly DO you change a radio station format? (Not like this!!) And what happens when the station is managed remotely by the GM's mother? Plus, we introduce the "Herb Tarlek Fashion Alert" and we get a TWO-FER right out of the box!! Get on board, fellow babies!! The WKRP-Cast is happening and there's nothing you can do about it!! Grab your brains and don't miss out!!

  • S4XTRA06 - "Misses & Messes" Series Wrap-up
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!!
Incredibly, we are finished with all 90 of the syndicated episode breakdowns. Two years ago this day seemed SOOOO far away. Now that it's here, we are a little bummed we won't be dropping a new show into your podcast feed each Tuesday. We do hope you keep re-listening to old shows. You'd be surprised how much you forget! (Quick, who invented the Whoopee Cushion??)

As we've rolled along, many listeners have supplied us with corrections, or additional information about some of the things we've discussed. Sometimes we've just totally blown it (President Aaron Burr, anyone?). We started to collect up these corrections with the thought we might address them someday. With no more episodes to dismantle, 'someday' is here.

This is our "Misses & Messes" Episode. Anything we've missed, anything we've messed up, we've tried to include it in this episode. Which state has the most Tornadoes? You wouldn't know after listening to the episode "Tornado." We explain what we messed up and who's really got the most twisters. We've thrown in a couple of laughs, a few music clips, some weird sound effects...so it's our usual grab bag of goofiness, only without a new episode of WKRP to talk about (sniff).

What would be the absolute best possible way to cap off our series re-watch of WKRP? Oh, maybe talking to Andy Travis himself!!

We talked to the incredible Gary Sandy! Don't miss this fun and fascinating conversation with the man who took WKRP from Easy Listening wasteland to the Rock-n-Roll Promised Land.

Gary shares great stories from the set, and from his extensive stage career. We launched our first episode on Sept. 1st of 2020. At the time we casually thought, "yeah, this'll take about two years." It seemed so far off! Amazingly, it's here. We've been through 89 of the 90 syndicated episodes of WKRP. We've unearthed new and exciting WKRP trivia! We've talked to more than 20 WKRP guest stars, writers and producers. We've had some big laughs! It's been a blast connecting with WKRP fans from around the world.

We have ONE regular episode to go...but not until NEXT week! THIS week, we're talking to two of our most frequent podcast contributors. We hear from Canadian 'blogger Roy Penney and the man who we've dubbed "The Accountant of Rock", Mr. Michael Hernandez.

These guys live and breathe WKRP. They've been a huge resource for us as we prepare the show each week. It was fun getting to know both of them. They've got some great insights into the show! Check it out.

Then...next week...September 20th...it will be time (sniff, sniff) for our final episode!! (ON the 40th Anniversary of the Final Episode!)

After that...stay tuned, Fellow Babies! We might have a HUGE INTERVIEW coming your way to cap off the series. We don't want to jinx it, so no announcements until everything is in the can.

So, what are you waiting for?? RP and The Accountant of Rock have stuff to say!! Push 'Play'!!

  • S4XTRA05 - Re-Run 'Frog Story' WITH Stacy Tolkin Interview
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!!
Hey, Fellow Babies!! Amazingly, we just passed our second anniversary since dropping the "Prolog" episode on 9/1/20. Two Big Years of the WKRP-Cast!!

Since it's Labor Day in the United States, we are taking off this weekend. No new episode, but we DO have a new interview for you. After about a year of pursuit, we finally caught up to Stacy Heather Tolkin. She played "Bunny Tarlek" in both the "Real Families" and "Frog Story" episodes.  Although she was only seven at the time, Stacy has some great memories of working on the show.

We talk to Stacy for about half an hour. Since she mentioned "Frog Story" several times, it seemed like the perfect add-on. So, enjoy a re-run of our episode about "Frog Story" following Stacy's interview.

We're counting down to the end!! We will be running our final "episode" version of the podcast on 9/20. September 20th is the ACTUAL 40th Anniversary of the airing of the final first-run episode of the show.

We hope you had a safe and Happy Labor Day Fellow Babies. Now start Fall by listening to our discussion with "Bunny."
