  • S2E20 - "The Doctor's Daughter"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
John Caravella has packed a lot of living into his 41 years. Our Dr. Fever seemingly doesn't do anything once. In addition to more than a half-dozen air names, he's had multiple wives, an unknowable number of jobs, a crazy amount of alcohol and several interactions with certain substances that have come back to haunt him ("do you see someone standing in the corner?") The thing Johnny seems to have only done once: have a kid. Her name is Laurie and Johnny hasn't seen her in seven years. She was twelve the last time the Doctor laid eyes on her...and his eyes might have been a bit bleary at the time. Now she's 19, on her own and in Cincinnati!! Johnny barely recognizes her. She showed up at the station with her Old Man...and she's wanting to visit her Old Man (we'll explain that one in a minute).

Justin is catching some Zs in what has to be one funky smelling van. They've been on the road since Seattle. Johnny says they can crash at his place. He wants to be a pal to Laurie...but it's hard to put the whole "dad" thing aside, especially with Justin around. We get into the years and the distances. Be warned, much of what you're about to experience is pretty "far out." Now hurry up and push 'play' before Justin falls back asleep!

[PRODUCTION NOTE: The Jazz clip played under our description of the Blue Wisp Jazz Club was actually recorded live at the Blue Wisp on Nov. 30th of 2011.]

They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. • S2E19 - "In Concert"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
This is a unique, and very important, episode of WKRP. It addresses an actual, and at the time of air, very recent, incident in Cincinnati. The first half is very 'usual'...lots of laughs, Art in a goofy mask. It's fun. It does nothing to prepare us for what's about to happen.

It was the same for concertgoers, parents and city leaders in Cincinnati. Leading up to it, The Who Concert was one of the biggest things to happen there in a long time. It was a huge and highly anticipated World Tour, and Cincinnati was chosen as one of the stops. Tickets were a sellout, the whole town was buzzing about the event and EVERYBODY wanted to be there.

The next day, when reports emerged of eleven deaths due to asphyxiation while trapped in the crowd, the people of Cincinnati...and the world...were stunned and grief stricken.

WKRP Story Editor Stephen Kampmann felt this was not something that could be ignored by the show. WKRP was a rock-n-roll station IN CINCINNATI! They HAD to address it. We'll tell you the story...and we breakdown the episode. Be ready fellow babies...this is a huge and heartbreaking dose of reality. Much the way the gang did, we'll get through it together.

  • S2E18 - "Les' Groupie"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
Sometimes you can't tell the heartbreakers. We know Les Nessman is a hard-driving newsman who's only in it for the story. He never tracked down a lead because he thought it might impress the ladies. His dedication to his work has impressed at least one lady. Her name is Darlene, and she has a crushing crush on our favorite intrepid reporter.

Be careful Les, Darlene has the crazy eyes! She's ready to move in after their first date! Within a week, she's befriended the cranky old neighbor lady. She even likes Phil!! Who's Phil? Oh, man...you'd better get some protection!!

Les needs his space! He's a lone wolf whose den doesn't need pink pillows and cosmic posters. Les would throw her out...if she'd just stop kissing him! What would Walter Cronkite say? What is Art Carlson going to say? Crooning newsmen mooning over a dame are more than Art can handle. Push 'play' and open a window...it's about to get all steamy in here.

  • S2E17 - "The Americanization of Ivan"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
Detente with the Soviets means fact-finding missions and endless attempts at 'unity.' One of those many attempts has landed in the Queen City...Porkopolis...in the form of a Russian Hog Delegation. If beepers had been invented, Les' would be going off. Les storms the press conference with a vengeance. Bailey is his true secret weapon and he doesn't even realize it. The primary speaker for the delegation is smitten by the lovely Miss Quarters. He speaks to her personally and, in the process, passes her a note!

He wants to defect...or does he? Yeah, he does. The lure of pretty girls, blue jeans and rock-n-roll is far too great for Mr. Ivan Papa...something or other. Les'll tell you.

Ivan has the duds, he's got the attitude and he's got the backing of the WKRP gang. He does NOT have bureaucratic support for his move...and he might not be finding any diplomatic assistance in Cinci. Will Ivan find his Tiny Dancer? Will Mr. Anderson ever get his Carter? Will you know any more about what's going on after you push 'play'? In this humble reporter's opinion, those answers would be: yes, no and maybe.

[HMOTD! Did you hear the mention at the end of our podcast where we talk about the OTHER WKRP podcast?? You may have already checked into the "Hold My Order" guys, but if you haven't, give 'em a spin (only after you've listened to our newest, of course). It's not a re-run! Rob and Mike's take on a WKRP podcast is pretty different from ours....it's a whole new experience for each episode. You can check them out at:

Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
Lucille is out of town for ten big days and "Huggable Herb" is on the loose! If you're not Jennifer Marlowe, this information will not affect you. If you ARE Jennifer Marlowe prepare for a blizzard of lewd propositions like you've never weathered before! Jennifer is horrified...she can't do ten days, she just CAN'T!

Bailey, of all people, has a devious "battle of the sexes" type plan. According to her, "it can't lose." She tells Jennie-poo to "go for it." Take old HH up on his offer. Go out with him! Play relationship 'Chicken'. Take it right up to the point where he veers off the road and cracks up in the tall weeds. Gotta happen...right? Bailey said so!

Jennifer "goes for it". Les gets a scoop with his marvelous "Sneaky Snooper" (all the way from Battle Creek) and tells Herb to ALSO "go for it!" This battle will be fought with a halter top and straight bourbon. Hit 'play' for all the sordid details.

  • S2E15 - "Herb's Dad"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
There has to be a reason for Herb. Sure, Johnny is leaning towards some kind of failed government experiment, but the real answer can probably be found in his parenting. If only we could meet one of Herb's parents...

Herb's Dad is waiting in the lobby and it's none other than BERT PARKS!! This is HUGE, Jennie-Poo! We've got the lowdown on how Bert happened to be on WKRP right in the midst of his "Miss America" firing scandal. Plus, we take a look at the strangely quiet sound mix Shout! Factory decided to include in their DVD set for this episode. The jokes are there, but the laughs are missing. We're hearing the "no audience" early Friday performance with no reactions to any of the jokes!! It's WEIRD!

Could I interest you in some classic Zuni Indian Jewelry? How about a toaster? You're right...toaster's are boring. Pull out a five and start the bidding, we've got Bert Parks, Herb snarks, new posters and NOBODY is talking toasters!! Hit 'play' and hop aboard the Herb Train...it's a wild ride!

  • S2E14 - "Family Affair" (w/Allison Argo)
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
It's bring your little sister to work day! Well, not really...but it feels like it. Andy's been entertaining his kid sister, Carol who's been visiting Cincinnati for four days now. Kings Island is fun, but with your BROTHER? Maybe not. Andy realizes he's coming up short in the tour guide department. He decides to enlist the help of one of the smoothest and coolest ladies' men you'll find anywhere in the Greater Cincinnati area...Dr. John Fever. Hold on, you thought I meant someone else? A certain late night disk jockey with a silky voice and fantastic threads? It would make sense, wouldn't it? Andy doesn't see it. He bribes the Doctor with fifty bucks and tells him to meet him back at the station tonight.

Venus and Carol have other plans that may involve roller skates. The pair ditches the station for a fun day in Cinci. Venus calls in to let Andy know he's going to need a sub. Art's on phone duty, and blows the message. Andy's getting REALLY mad about this situation and he's not sure why. It wouldn't be because Venus is...black?

This is a deep and well-constructed script about subtle racism. It was written by Tim Reid, his first ever WGA writing credit. Not only do we go over Tim's story about the episode, we've got a BONUS: Allison Argo, who plays Carol, joins us to answer some questions and fill in a few details. It's a hilariously thought-provoking look at the racism that exists way below the surface. Sometimes only family can bring it to light.

  • S2E11 - "Jennifer's Home for Christmas"
Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
Merry Christmas!! Stop looking at the calendar...it's Christmas in KRP-Land and that's all that matters. Remember how weirdly disorienting it was to come across a Christmas episode of a show in syndication?? It didn't matter if it was the middle of July...for half an hour, you got a little of the warmth of Christmas, no matter what time of year. This Christmas, the whole gang seems a bit edgy. Relatives are in town, travel plans aren't coming together and it's almost time for the Office Christmas Party.  Jennifer seems very invested in this year's party. Turns out, she's not going home for Christmas. The big office party might be her only chance to celebrate the holiday with 'family'.

When everybody bails on the party after only 10 minutes, Jennifer is NOT happy. Could this possibly really be her ONLY Christmas celebration?? The evening after the big party, the gang is feeling guilty. They stop by Jennifer's apartment...admission: one Christmas Tree. Herb didn't get the memo. It isn't long before Johnny's downing another ladle of eggnog, Venus is trying to get the white out of his beard and Art thinks he's got Mama's Christmas Tree Conundrum nailed.  Got your shopping done? Good. You've got time to kick back, hit 'play' and pour yourself another eggnog...if you can get the bowl away from The Doctor.

Randall Ferryman is coming to town and he plans to bury us ALL! Herb has hit the sales guy jackpot. One of the biggest funeral home chains in the country has its sights set on the Queen City and they seem to want to deliver big bags of money to the Flimm Building.  Herb "did the deal" but...hold on a minute, there was very little deal to be done. Wasn't that WAY too easy? Andy wants to know what's going on here!! Turns out, the Dead Guy in the Lobby wants a jingle in addition to all of those sweet, sweet spots. Can the gang can pull together a jingle??! This just might work. Venus was in a band, Bailey can actually sing and Jennifer is making smoke come out of Herb's ears. Yeah, yeah...one day we're all gonna buy it, but until that day comes, you need to hit "play" and enjoy the young and swingin' sounds of the Mighty KRP Singers!! Randall is 'ready to cook'!

Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!
A young mother is alone in Cincinnati. Her only friend in the world is the Doctor! She says she hears him on his show every morning and she just KNOWS she can trust him with her newborn. When she leaves the baby at the station, the little sweetie melts everyone's heart...well, everyone except Herb. She's a little standoffish when it comes to Herb. The baby has standards! Johnny gets a taste of fatherhood (and, possibly, the yellow stuff).  Check it out! A young man named Danny Openden is playing the baby. We found Danny! And, even cooler, we found Danny's mom, Lori Openden! Lori has spent her life in television casting and she just happened to have a newborn when this storyline came around. Lori gave us some GREAT behind the scenes details about Danny's time on WKRP.  Grab a diaper, fellow babies, it's time for a change!! Take a big bite of the green stuff, hum a little Brahm's Lullaby and hit "play" before the people from Children and Family Services get here!!
