May 18, 2018Ready Steady Rehab: S1E3 - Variations of Knee PainKnee injuries can be scary, painful, debilitating and stop you in your tracks, worrying that sport and exercises can be permanently threatened. Dr. Heather North unpacks the causes, symptoms and treatments for knee pain to offer relief and reassurance to sufferers. The first thing many patients consider is having an MRI. The old wives tale says the more active you are, the more sports you play, especially running, that this increases the chance of arthritis which is completely bogus. Extensive research has proved that the opposite is true and even constant running will decrease the risk of osteoarthritis and joint degeneration. Stimulation to the joint helps to keep it healthy; it helps to make the cartilage strong and all the connective tissues strong. So being active is not something that is going to cause damage in the future. It's important to understand that when you have knee pain there are two important pieces of it; one is internal joint discomfort and damage, and two external knee pain which is more commonly seen which refers to the muscles and connective tissues and the outside of the joint.Host: Dr. Heather North For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
