July 13, 2021Tri This: S1E26 - Heat Acclimation for AthletesHow to get acclimated to the heat is the subject of this week’s episode. Did you know there's a difference between heat acclimation and heat acclimatization? Heat acclimation is likely the one that most people will be able to do and we cover a few different ways you can do it if you have access to a sauna or hot tub. We also discuss why it's important, and how your tolerance to heat can be altered by where you are in your menstrual cycle. If you want to even the playing field between you and a competitor that may be in a different time of their menstrual cycle, we talk about how to do that. As race temperatures seem to be getting warmer and warmer, if you know you'll be racing in higher heat this season, and you'd like 100 degrees to feel more like 70 degrees, make sure you are ready to go by applying some of these tips in this episode.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. July 12, 2021The CWSA Podcast: S1E32 - Keilana Ricketts, 2013 Award WinnerThe 2013 Honda Cup Winner, Keilani Ricketts, a 6’2” left-handed softball pitcher billed herself exactly as that when pitching to coaches for college recruiting. That not only got their attention but height and hand served her well on the mound for her collegiate career at Oklahoma University and now with USA Softball. Keilani was introduced to a variety of sports in childhood and followed three siblings onto to collegiate competition. Her collegiate team won a national championship because they all bought in to a common goal and as she was showered with awards she modestly attributes them to her team… claiming she just was the one on the mound. She does admit that it takes heart, grit, confidence, enjoying the pressure and buying into the game plan to perform as a champion pitcher. Playing professionally took a great deal of transition especially handling her new found freedom. Keilani describes her fellow softball players who are Honda Cup winners, and relates the best advice given to her by her coaches over the years. She believes a champion’s attributes must include a strong work ethic and being a good teammate. She looks forward to the upcoming Olympics after the enforced interruption due to the pandemic. Her life lessons from sport include control what you can control. Cheer on Keilani and the USA softball team at the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer.Host: Chris Voelz. July 09, 2021The Horse Show: S6E3 - Cyndi Jackson's Riding and Running GoalsArizona based dressage rider and trainer Cyndi Jackson would seem to have a full time job with ten horses in training and a roster of clients to teach. This is usually enough for most equestrians in a day. However for this 43 year old wife of Philip (aka PJ) and mother of seven year old Ronin, it’s a day that starts when most people are asleep at 3am. That’s the time Cyndi will be out on the trail, not riding but running for a couple of hours. Sometimes with a running partner and sometimes alone, she is dodging the rocks and rattle snakes in the canyons of southern Arizona as she trains for marathon races. Before her next race, Cyndi’s goal is the challenge of running Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon so agility is key as is her fitness. Her next race goal is the 2022 Boston Marathon. After running, Cyndi starts her day in the barn where training switches to dressage. A student of Heather Blitz and rider’s biomechanics, her dream has long been to become an Olympian and with a promising young horse in training she is excited about his journey. July 07, 2021WiSP Sports Desk: S3E22 - The Pressure of Elite Sport on Young AthletesTennis is the top story this week as Wimbledon gets down to the quarter final stages. Britain’s Emma Raducanu, 18, made it through to the fourth round in her Wimbeldon debut and made a name for herself with a determined fight against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic before being forced to retire when she was not feeling well in the second set. Emma’s retirement due to health concerns comes after the withdrawal of 23 year old Naomi Osaka from the French Open and Wimbledon after she was feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of her media responsibilities. And last week it was the American sprinter 21 year old Sha’Carrie Richardson who turned to Marijuana, a forbidden substance under IOC rules, to help her cope with the news of her mother’s death. The laser focus that elite athlete’s come under clearly imposes a unique pressure at a young age which we discuss. Chris shares her highlights from the US Women’s Soccer Team Send Off Series where the USA came a way with 4-0 victories in both games. Tobin Heath earned her place in the starting line up against Mexico this week when the US played the second of their friendly games. In last week’s game Heath returned to the squad after injuries to score within a minute of coming off the bench in the second half. And she underlined her form for the Tokyo Olympics by scoring again in the first half of last night’s game. While it was 4-0 in both games, the only difference was that in the second game all the goals came in the first half.Hosts: Chris Stafford & Nancy GillenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. July 06, 2021Tri This: S1E25 - Nutrition for Extreme WeatherThis week, Kirstin discusses nutrition for extreme weather. After her experience in Coeur D'Alene she saw many athletes experience a wide range of issues. From GI distress to cramping to dehydration and overheating there were many lessons and takeaways from that race. We discuss both nutrition for hot and cold weather. When is whole food appropriate versus liquid calories? We discuss some of the best ways to take on electrolytes and salt. And the biggest question I get is: "you drink Pepsi on course?" I don't always, but it can be a very useful tool and it's important that you know what it is and how it can help. As always, nutrition is something that is unique to each person, which is why it's critical to test and know your body. Each race will have its own set of challenges. You can absolutely leverage your understanding of nutrition and fueling to make the appropriate changes depending on race conditions. Sometimes you need to make those changes on the fly. Tune in to learn more.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. July 05, 2021The CWSA Podcast S1E31: Sarah Pavan, 2007 Award WinnerSarah Pavan, the 2007 Honda Cup winner is one of the best and rarest examples of a volleyball athlete who excelled at both indoor and beach games at the highest level. A collegiate four-time All American and University of Nebraska National Champion, Sarah went on to play professionally and is now headed to the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.Coming from a sports minded family in Kitchener, Canada, Sarah shares what it was like to be a member of her Canadian national volleyball team at the age of 16. She relates her journey to the U.S., and then the close bonds that brought the Huskers a collegiate national championship .One of her favorite quotes given to her by her collegiate coach was Thoreau’s “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.” This would serve her well as she fulfilled her dream to become an Olympian. Though beach volleyball was not initially on her radar she saw it as the path to fulfill that dream. Continuing to play professionally, both indoor and outdoor she shares the differences in the games and the necessary transitions to be made. Sarah, a hard hitting 6’6” lefty, notes that from sport one learns discipline, teamwork, communication skills and confidence and would not be the person she is without sport. She encourages all youth to be involved in sport and laments that girls are dropping out at an early age. During the pandemic she wanted to connect with those volleyballers who were quarantined and created ‘Sarah Pavan Volleyball’ on You Tube, helping beginners to learn basic volleyball. Sarah closes by recognizing the difference collegiate sports made in shaping her life. If you want to cheer on a great athlete, accomplished student and delightful person cheer on the Canadian team of Sarah and Melissa ( Humana-Parades) in the Tokyo Olympics beach volleyball.Host: Chris VoelzA co-production of WiSP Sports and the Collegiate Women's Sports AwardsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
