On this week's episode of Hockey Talk, Coach Shannon Miller talks us through the known and unknown aspects of coaching, the challenges of balancing the personalities and bringing out the best of available talent. Our coaches and our parents pushed many of us growing up and playing sports - we weren’t allowed to float through the comfort zone receiving coddling and bouquets of flowers for compliments. Many today have not been made to feel uncomfortable; they’ve not been pushed by their parents, and possibly not by earlier coaches. There is a softness that exists where toughness used to reside.  She also explains the need to follow your instincts and stick by the principles to be your guiding light.

Rachel Bower is a former National Champion and England representative. After ten years of competing she turned her hand to coaching and has quickly worked her way up to become and England Support Coach while still volunteering with Earlsfield Amateur Boxing Club and the Metropolitan Police Boxing Team.  Rachel’s fighting highlights are winning the National Championships at the Echo Arena in Liverpool with the only stoppage of the finals. It was also the first year men and women boxed on the same stage. Her coaching highlights are being selected to train a celebrity for BBC’s Sport Relief and coaching my boyfriend, an Amateur super heavyweight. Rachel teaches and does one on one coaching at 12 Rounds Boxing http://12roundsboxing.co.uk/.  She mobilises the Met Police boxing team/coaches to deliver ‘Get Started with Boxing’ with The Princes Trust where we use the sport to teach hard to reach young people valuable life skills https://www.princes-trust.org.uk/help-for-young-people/unlock-your-potential/discover-new-talents.

On this final episode of The FAB Podcast, Kristin Ray chats with Lauren Clayborne, formerly of the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Lions.  Lauren is currently in a career transition moment where she stepped away from her role in community relations and is taking time to re-evaluate where she wants her career to go before stepping back in.  She shares some great advice for any women, especially those in the sport industry, who may be questioning whether or not it's time to make a change. She mentions the anxiety that can come when women leave a job by choice because of the fear they may never get a shot to rejoin the industry.  She also talks of how to be intentional with both time off and the next job search.
