Women's History Month: The Fight To Put Women On Corporate Boards

Listen Later

2020 marks the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. Since the beginning of the Trump administration, the political climate has largely been influenced by the rise of female-powered movements. From the Women's March to the #MeToo movement, women have become one of the most powerful forces in American politics.

In the corporate sector, 10 years ago, the founders of the organization 2020 Women on Boards announced the group’s vision to boost the number of women on corporate boards by 20 percent.

Has it happened? And why does it matter? We’re taking a forensic look at the numbers.

Guests:

Malli Gero - co-founder and vice chair of 2020 Women on Boards, a global education and advocacy campaign urging corporations to meet or exceed 20% women directors on their boards by the year 2020.

Nancy Nager - vice president and president-elect of the Boston Club, an organization invested in elevating women in all areas of the business world.

Bob Rivers - CEO of Eastern Bank

Last year, Forbes' list of the highest-earning hip hop artists listed 20 names: 19 men and only one woman, Cardi B. It’s symbolic of the way that female MCs and rappers, despite their talent and innovation, have struggled to be center stage in one of music’s most dynamic genres, even though they helped bring hip hop to the world.

Music journalist Kathy Iandoli covered their stories throughout her career. Now she’s documented the striving and the struggle of these artists in her new book, "God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip Hop."

It’s our March selection for “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club.”

Guest:

Kathy Iandoli — author of "God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop," which is available in bookstores and online now.
