What flashes before your eyes as you die? Memories, thoughts big and small that nested somewhere in your brain, echoes you ignored. But in those final flashes, the silliest things can be brought to the forefront: Unimportant conversations, odd moments, even cases you never put that much importance in. Now, that last one only really applies if you work in a detective agency, to be fair. Sometimes small things make an outsized impression. But memories are malleable, fallible, easily made and easily broken. When you're running through them, how much of them can you trust? They twist and turn and bend and break with only the slightest amount of pressure. Do you understand? Rhys? Can you hear me? Rhys? Please wake up, please.

You can only run for so long. At some point, you have to face your problems head on. Usually, you'd do this in therapy, but Grace is tired of platitudes and obfuscations and questions. She wants answers and there's only one person who can give them to her. But that means no more running, no more avoiding, no more looking away. You have to face your problems head on, no matter what happens, no matter what they bring.

You have to stop running at some point. No matter what, the past will find you and it is not kind.

The past will always find its way back to you, whether it is the distant or the recent. It comes back with claws, ready to pull you into its embrace. You can't escape the violence that made you. It will always find a way to hook itself into your skin, burrow under, and then wait until you think you're safe.
