Scientists have named a new species of furry deep-sea coral "Iridogorgia chewbacca" due to its striking resemblance to the "Star Wars" character Chewbacca. The coral, characterized by its long, hairy, and flexible branches, was first observed off Moloka'i in 2006 and later in the Mariana Trench in 2016. University of Hawaiʻi professor emeritus Les Watling and his team officially cataloged the species in the journal Zootaxa, noting its shiny exterior and fur-like silhouette. The branches of I. chewbacca can grow up to 15 inches long, with the entire specimen reaching up to four feet in length, and its swaying movement in the ocean current further enhances its "Wookiee of the Sea" appearance.
