After praising God for the comfort the Lord had shown him in his most recent trials, Paul started to explain his most recent travel plants to the Corinthians. In 1 Cor Paul had told the Corinthians he would visit them after traveling through Macedonia (1 Cor 16:5-7). Since that time he altered his travel plans. Last week we talked about Rev 6 and the main thrust was the wrath of God—God’s judgment on those who’ve persecuted and killed HIS people. Today we’re jumping ahead a bit to chapter 12. Now understanding Rev 12 all depends on what criteria you use to establish when the prophecy in this chapter will, or has, taken place. Welcome to our brand new study of 2 Corinthians. This must have been a difficult letter for Paul to write as there were attacks on his character and authority. And although he wanted to rejoice with the Corinthians in their spiritual growth, he didn’t shrink from asserting his authority and disciplining those who needed it. Rev 6 has some amazing imagery in it with the Lamb ripping open the first 6-seals of the scroll. Then what is commonly referred to as the 4-horsemen appear and each of them are dispatched to carry out some pretty scary stuff. And while those images are powerful we’re not going to spend time on them directly. You see we believe that all those images point to the main message of this chapter which is God’s judgment on those who’ve persecuted and killed HIS people. Most of us have a picture in our minds of what Jesus looks like. But usually we would never think of Jesus looking like what John describes in Rev 5. He sees a lamb. And there is nothing normal about the lamb. It appeared to be bleeding with 7 horns and 7 eyes—this is NOT how we would picture Jesus at all. So is this really how Jesus looks? Let’s find out. As Paul concludes this book of 1 Corinthians, he challenges us to think about eternity. Because of Christ we have victory over death and we can focus our lives on making an impact for the kingdom of God. In today’s sermon we’re going to study Rev 4:1-11. When you first read these verses you might think, “What’s going on here?” Why does Jesus take John to a “church service” right off the bat? I’m sure it was beautiful ceremony but it seems irrelevant. Why not just get right down to the nitty gritty and tell us what we REALLY want to know—tell us about the conflict between the forces of good and evil. Tell us about the conflict between Satan’s army and the angels of God? Why start with a worship service? Why? Because that’s where God KNEW we needed to begin. And so it is...let’s go! God bless you. In chapter 15 Paul turns to a theological problem, in contrast to the largely behavioral problems he’s dealt with so far. Some Corinthian’s were denying that in the future believers will be raised from the dead. So Paul begins this chapter by pointing to something the Corinthians believed. What is it? Today we begin a brand new sermon series called God Goes To War. Over the next 9-weeks we’re going to go through the entire book of Revelation—you heard right. That’s 22 chapters in 9-weeks and it’s gonna be epic. Now today’s sermon is called Standing Against Evil and the main Scripture reference is Rev 1:1-11. But in actuality we’ll be covering the first 3-chapters of Rev. You see these 3 chapters are often seen as being separate from the rest of the book. But they’re not.
