Daniel & Ben talk with Chinese-American poet, Arthur Sze, author of "The Redshifting Web," "The Ginkgo Light," and other books. Sze talks about arrival to Santa Fe, New Mexico, 40 years ago and how it continues to influence his work. He also discusses why the label of “Asian-American poet” hinders or helps his work. Sze also talks about the intentional relaxed-pace rhythm of his poetry, and how his work has changed over the years. Daniel talks with famed Mexican-American poet, Rudolfo Anaya, who is best known for his 1972 book “Bless Me, Ultima.” The book has been made into a movie that will be world premiered in El Paso, Texas, prior to its nationwide release on Sept. 21, 2012. Anaya talks about the pleasure of watching the finished product, and about the difficulty of handing over his beloved book into the hands of filmmakers. Anaya also talks about the struggles of being one of the first writers to get Chicano literature published, and about having his books banned in schools and libraries across the country. Benjamin Alire Saenz reads the Poem of the Week – Lucille Clifton’s “At Last We Killed the Roaches.” This week’s Poetic License comes from Laurie Ann Guerrero, who reflects on a San Antonio poet who inspires her (“San Antonio is a Poem.”)

Daniel & Ben talk with writer Eugene Gloria, whose latest book is “My Favorite Warlord.” He explains why his latest collection grew out of a failed idea and re-incarnated itself after a visit to Kyoto. Gloria also discusses how the publishing world has changed since his first book was published in 2000. The Poem of the Week comes from today’s guest, Eugene Gloria. He reads “Psalm of Myself” from his latest collection, “My Favorite Warlord.”

He also explains why his Uncle Charlie is as big as influence as figures such as Neruda and Philip Levine. Daniel & Ben talk with writer Roberto Perezdiaz, author of "Mas Sabe el Diablo," a collection of short stories that take on themes of innocence and maturity. He talks about the years he spent as a court translator, and how his work as a Spanish-to-English translator helped develop his use of language in writing and translating works in both languages. The Poem of the Week is Sherman Alexie's "Grief Calls us to the Things of This World," read by Benjamin Saenz.

Daniel & Ben talk with writer Craig Santos Perez, author of "from unincorporated territory [saina]." Perez is an indigenous writer from Guam who currently teaches at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He talks about his journey in writing [saina] and how it reflects his sense of his peoples' loss of tradition. He also discusses why words inspire his activism, and how his extensive travel schedule feeds his poetry.

The Poem of the Week is actually a number of poems by Andres Montoya. Daniel reads selections from a forthcoming posthumous collection of "Leukemia Poems" by Montoya, written when the late writer was in the hospital dying of leukemia.

Dan Chaon - Daniel & Ben talk with bestselling author, Dan Chaon, whose recent book “Stay Awake” is earning rave reviews. He talks about his early interest in writing, and how writers such as Stephen King, Peter Straub, and Ray Bradbury led him to his current path. This L.A. native talks about the hitchhiking trip across the Southwest that led to his applying to UTEP for their MFA program. Welsh also describes the "organic" way he approaches poetry, and why meditation is so vital to his creative process.

Daniel & Ben also talk to writers & educators Macarena Hernandez and Carol Brochin Ceballos. They talk about their efforts in securing a grant to help inspire El Paso teachers to teach Mexican-American literature in their classes.

Daniel & Ben talk with Fred Arroyo, author of “The Region of Lost Names” (2008) and “Western Avenue and Other Fictions” (2012). Arroyo explains why “Western Avenue” is more of a novel told in a cycle of short stories, and why it’s a companion to “Region of Lost Names.” He also explains why he refers to the central figures in his work as “people,” not “characters.” Arroyo also describes how he approaches endings.

In this week’s Poem of the Week, Ben reads “The Word ‘Class’ Should Not Appear in The Poem,” from Karen Fiser’s collection, “Words Like Fate and Pain.”
