  • Inner Strength & Persistence Pay
Kevin John Peters, Sports Reporter at the Sacramento ABC 10 affiliate, is one of the most enthusiastic people I know. I watch his sports cast whenever I get the opportunity. Watching him broadcast with that radiant smile gave me the impression that his path to success was easy. That assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. He changed his college major several times before settling on Theater with an English minor. He liked acting but didn’t love it. He stumbled into broadcasting and his passion and purpose aligned. At the advanced age of 31, it was difficult to get into the field, but his persistence paid off. This is a story you have got to here.

  • And Still I Rise
Gloria Bailey Ray, Founder and CEO of Its Essential LLC, has had multiple careers. After her divorce she pivoted from nursing to pharmaceutical sales which offered more predictable work hours as she raised her children as a single mother. In her first pharmaceutical sales position, she was grossly underpaid compared to her peers and given the most historically unprofitable sales territory. Rather than complain about the pay and other challenges, she developed a plan to overcome the obstacles and lead the department in sales. Her bonuses more than made up for the low salary. When pharmaceutical companies began to consolidate, she was downsized out of a job. That is when she decided to become an entrepreneur and It’s Essential was launched. Now she is an author, life coach, motivational speaker, podcaster and online store owner. In spite of all the obstacles faced, she found a way to end up on top. I was so inspired by her story, and you will be too.

  • One Life, One Wife

”. I usually have guests who discuss work relationships. This episode focuses on work-life balance. The trouble started in the fifth year of Brad Qualls' marriage. He was a young California Highway Patrol officer seeking as much overtime to increase his income in order to better provide for his wife and toddler. While the extra money was welcome, his wife wanted more time with him.He was a great provider, but not the best companion. His wife was upset but didn’tfully express her feelings. An astute supervisor suggested that Brad and his wife discuss their issues with a marriage counselor. After nine sessions, the lines of communication were opened. Thirty-seven years later they are doing very well. They still have disagreements but have learned how to fight fairly and navigate issues constructively. The take home message: get help if you need it. Work-life balance is important.

  • Fashion Forward
From as early as she could remember Ebony Hodge was interested in fashion. She was inspired by the way her mother and other women in her family’s social circle dressed. She dabbled in other vocations but was drawn to fashion as if pulled by a magnet. Friends and family were always coming to her to get tips on how to dress for events and how to apply make-up in just the right way. Rather than take uninspiring jobs to address immediate financial issues, she is choosing the long game. Knowing that when she is successful money will come. If you have passion for a business, willing to learn and work hard, this is the podcast for you. As I often say, listen and learn.

  • Woke Backlash in the Workplace
The Edward Jones, hasn’t done a solo podcast in a while. After the unexpected departure of the Director of the Centers for Diversity and Inclusion , he was called back to the university to fill the position until a permanent replacement was found. That is where he heard the term “woke”. It is used to describe conditions that happened in this country that many would not want disclosed. He believes that sharing this history provides an opportunity for healing. However, some powerful people are passing legislation outlawing Diversity Equity and Inclusion training. In this podcast he provides a constructive alternative to those efforts.

  • Driven to Serve
Dr. Carla T. Galbraith is a born servant leader. Like many African Americans, the skill building process began at an early age in church. Her father and grandfather were pastors. As a preacher’s kid (PK), it was in her best interest to set a good example for the other children in the church. That was easy for her because it was a labor of love. She became an accomplished public speaker before starting kin-dergarten. Organizing programs and leading others came naturally to her. Those skills were transferable. She employed them from elementary school through college. She didn’t want to rely on her natural ability alone. She chose college courses to help hone and refine those skills. She was an excellent teacher and wanted to move into an ad-ministrative role where she could have an even greater impact on students. However, she initially found a dearth of opportunity. Although she did her job well and even trained others who were promoted, opportunities for advancement weren’t on the horizon for her. Instead of giving up, she expanded the job search. After excelling at a school in another city, she was welcomed back to her home town where she is thriving. Hear the journey and be inspired.

  • Compassionate Leadership
Dr. Sharon Whittaker-Davis, described herself as a serious student from elementary to graduate school. She probably spent more time in the library than the librarians. She sacrificed Ime at social events, which she regrets, but her investment in academicexcellence paid off. She received her bachelor’s, and master’s degrees fromHoward University where she earned high honors. She earned her doctorate atIllinois State University, while working full-time, excelling as a student and universityadministrator. Shortly after completing her doctorate, she pursued employmentat an HBCU (historically black college/university). This gave her anopportunity to give back to underserved students. Over the course of hermult-decade career, she served as Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice President for Academic Affairs based on where the need was greater. She developed an excellent rapport with supervisors, peers and especially students. She made a lasting positive impression where ever she lived and worked. She claims to be retired, but is as busy as ever working for herself. Her new business venture will be announced soon. Stay tuned.

  • Answering the Call
Both of Jeanne Taylor’s parents served in the military. Although they were not hard-core disciplinarians she learned discipline and self-determination from them. She created her college major which was comprised of health care, administration and political science. She is one of the few people I know who found a position in the field in which they majored. She worked for the state of Califor-nia writing health care policy and proposed health care legislation. She enjoyed the work but received a calling to become a medical practitioner in her late 30s. She fought the call, convinced she was too old and had 5 children. However, running from the call produced anxiety. Only when she chose to answer, did the anxiety subside. The jour-ney was not easy, but she accomplished what God set for her to do. A truly inspiration-al story.
