    Jacquelyn Smithson Howard is all things writing, that is to say, she is a storyteller, editor, ghostwriter, poet and author. She has written 22 books so far. She recited one of her poems, “I See You, You Matter” during the interview. That poem was the essence of our conversation as a result, it became the title of this episode. We spent the entire interview discussing her amazing life. She was intimidated and bullied in the workplace but met every challenge with grace and strength. She was the “only” in many of her classes and jobs. Although soft spoken, she stood her ground technically and emotionally. Everyone can benefit from her story, especially women.

    Al Striplen grew up watching his parents work hard all of their lives. He learn the importance of having a strong work ethic from them. However, they did not want him to follow in their footsteps that’s why his father strongly encouraged him to go to col-lege.     Larry Lee Is the President and Publisher of the Sacramento Observ-er Media Group.. The Sacramento Observer newspaper was established in 1962 to report on is-sues from an African American perspective as well as cover events that other newspapers were not covering. His family referred to it as “the family business”. Although he had two older broth-ers, his father asked him to consider taking over the business at some point in the future. The time came around 2008. He led the business through the 2008 financial collapse, the pivot from print to digital media and COVID-19.
