If you have extra skills and experience to contribute to the business it is a big bonus

Knowing the best sellers is important

Have niche knowledge relating to the bookshop and its surroundings e.g if the bookshop was in a historic area

Have excellent customer service skills

Have a thirst for knowledge

Be non judgmental and friendly
