  • Creating More Characters Based on Real-World Locations! - Luther and Jane and a Walk in the Woods

Welcome back listeners to another episode of World Forge!  This is a slightly shorter episode this week as we are totally wiped out from a trip up North, but we think you'll still have fun with it.  We took inspiration from our time in the woods to build some more characters for you to use as heroes, villains, or NPCs.

Our rec room this week is something we think is really important, and it's to try and find ways to support the State and National Park Systems.  If you're looking for good social distance friendly activities, you could do a lot worse than taking a hike in one of the many parks that are probably a lot closer to you than you think.  We had a great time hiking around St. Croix State Park on our trip, and were able to pull some interesting ideas from our time there.  The National parks website is nps.gov and your state should have their own site with listings of all the state run parks in your area.

  • Building (and Destroying) Ruins and Wreckage - The Trail of Bones with (my brother!) Tommy Weigel

We're back this week with another exciting episode, after an even more exciting week of (forcibly) renovating our apartment.  Unfortunately this week we were attacked by our own pipes and were forced to vacate our studio/apartment for a whole week while repairs were done.  Luckily for you it on served to inspire and invigorate us to create ruins and wreckage to match the disaster that was our own home over the past few days.

And even better we're joined by my brother Tommy!  Last time he joined us we talked about ancient artifacts, which are like ruins that aren't places, so he's quite well equipped to help us explore this most fascinating of topics.

We also talk about a fun rec room recommendation this week: Atlas Obscura!  We may have recommended this one in the past, but we also don't care!  If you're looking for exciting places you can learn about or visit in the actual real world to inspire your DnD games Atlas Obscura is a great resource to help you find all the weird and wacky places you've likely never heard of!

  • Creating Characters and Places Based on Real-World Locations - The Man Who Was Just Snakes

Hello listeners and thanks for joining us again for another episode of World Forge!  We are freshly back from a much needed vacation and wanted to take some time talking about how to look out for inspiration in your daily lives (or travels!) and try to build some interesting stories and places based on some of our favorite places we've traveled to!

Our inspirations include our recent trip to Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a past trip to Washington State, the black sand beaches of Iceland, and a some other really exciting places we've been lucky enough to visit.

After that we take a moment to talk about a really wonderful charity event we're fans of: Games Done Quick!  This years Summer Games Done Quick event has just concluded, having raised over 2 million dollars for Doctor's Without Borders!  This is an event that we've been closely involved with for years that we definitely want you to check out.  Not only is it the largest fundraiser in the world for DWB, it's just a great time all around.  Check out their twitch stream at twitch.tv/gamesdonequick for their live events, or their youtube channel youtube.com/c/gamesdonequick for all of their past content.  And please consider donating to one of their several events that take place throughout the year!

  • Going from Hero to Antihero - I Love You Too, Dude!

Welcome back to another episode of World Forge where we're taking random prompts and turning them into new assets for you to use in your Dungeons and Dragons games!

This week we're tackling a topic that puts an exciting spin on the standard protagonist role!  We're talking antiheroes and all the things that make a good guy bad!  We have a lot of fun examples from all over the pop culture sphere: Sawyer from Lost, Red Hood from Batman, Roschach, House, Vegeta, John McClane and tons more!  And as usual, we take a big swing at creating some of our own!

We also have some cool recommendations for you this week including the Disney Villainous board game!  Villainous is a super fun strategy card game where you play as the villains from your favorite Disney movies.  We think it's really fun to get to step into the shoes of some of these characters and hope games like this can help inspire you to put a dark twist on your DnD heroes.

  • Writing Fables and Animal Fantasy - A Murder of Friends

Welcome back listeners to yet another episode of World Forge!  This week we are tackling the classic topic of animal fantasy!  Believe it or not there's a lot of precedent for these types of stories in DnD already, but we take a swing at building some of our own anyway.

From a grumpy lizard and his faithful turtle friend, to an eagle with a chip on his shoulder, we spin tales of all manner of animals from all parts of the food chain.  We also talk about some of our favorite examples of animal fantasy in movies, tv, and literature.

Our rec room this week includes:

Humblewood, an awesome DnD 5e compatible campaign setting available at their website humblewood.com, as well as their twitters @thedeckofmany and @hitpointpress

This great gif of a turtle dancing in the shower

and an advertisement for silence in movie theaters

  • Helping Build More Listener Worlds! - The March of The Land Whales

Welcome back to a slightly delayed episode of World Forge!  This one's a bit shorter because honestly...  we just needed a chill one this week.  However the insanity of our lives hasn't stopped us from bringing the heat of the World Forge to your podcast feed!

This week we're talking about another listener requested topic, and helping to build out some interesting stories for their world!  Our good friend @HolyCaGnolli on twitter asked us to take a swing at designing some interesting ships, crews, and stories for a campaign they're working on based on the idea of theirs of a ship made of living wood captained by druids.  We ended up with a detailed exploration of that ship, a rival ship, and a divine quest to release the wandering souls trapped aboard another derelict druidic ship.

  • Telling the Greatest Story of All Time Based on Random Magic the Gathering Cards - The March of The Supreme Kevin

Welcome back to another episode of World Forge!  This week we decide to explore a pretty interesting change in format by having our first episode without our proprietary prompt generation technology!  Instead we are using booster packs of Magic the Gathering cards to guide our creations!  Our aim was to show how inspiration can come from anywhere, and we utilize the art, the flavor text, and the mechanics of these cards to inform our Dungeons and Dragons creations!  We also delve briefly into the world of ASMR so you know...  if that's your thing you're welcome.

Our goal was to use these prompts to tell THE GREATEST STORY OF ALL TIME and obviously we succeeded because hey it's us.

Our rec room recommendations this week include a really interesting art sharing site built around collaborative story telling in storywars.net, as well as Art Camp by Noah and Rachel Bradley!

We also suggest you take a look at our two sources of story inspiration this week: Homer's The Odyssey, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's The Autumn of the Patriarch.  Mechanically we think these two works explore journeys and adventuring in especially interesting ways.

As always, if you enjoyed this episode or want to share any feedback please consider reaching to us on on social media!  What do you think is the greatest story ever told?  Do you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations?  If so we can be found on twitter @worldforgepod and via email at [email protected]!  We're always excited to hear from our listeners, and if you send us something really interesting we may just share it on air!  If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts, or your podcasting app of choice! • Evil Lairs and Secret Hideouts - You Don't Mess with the Mer-Mafia

Welcome back to another episode of World Forge!  This time we're talking about creating interesting evil lairs and bad guy hideouts.  The place you conduct your business out of says a lot about you as a supervillain, so we want to help make sure all you villains out there are fully equipped to carry out your dark deeds in style!

We talk about some of our favorite evil hideouts, and then go on to create some of our own including: a speakeasy for creatures of the night, and a magical baseball stadium/casino!

As always, if you enjoyed this episode or want to share any feedback please consider reaching to us on on social media!  Where is your Big Bad Evil Guy currently living?  Do you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations?  If so we can be found on twitter @worldforgepod and via email at [email protected]!  We're always excited to hear from our listeners, and if you send us something really interesting we may just share it on air!  If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts, or your podcasting app of choice!
