  • Building Introductory Adventures for New Dungeons and Dragons Players - The Anti Wedding Crashers

    Welcome back to another episode of World Forge listeners!  This week we decided we would talk about our approach to introducing new players to DnD and create a great starter adventure to show off some of the best things DnD has to offer.  We will actually be using the adventure we created on air this week in our next session with some DnD newcomers, so we'll be sure and update you on how all that goes next week.


    We also talk quite a bit about some of our advice for how to help make playing and running DnD games a little more fun and accessible for newcomers.  We also share some of our favorite pieces of advice that you all shared with us on twitter, this episode is chock full of pearls of wisdom!

    And we've actually got 3 great rec room recommendations for you all this week too:

    Firstly, we really just wanted to say playing DnD with new players can be a great way to grow as a player or as a DM, and we absolutely recommend you take any chance you can to do so.  We all benefit from seeing new perspectives and hearing new ideas, and it's important that we help make the DnD community a friendly and welcoming place.

    Piper also wanted to recommend a really great new show produced by National Geographic that just started streaming on Hulu: Barkskins.  It tells the story of early settlers in the Pacific Northwest, and the drama surrounding the settlement of New France.

    And finally, I wanted to recommend a cute little city management game I picked up on the Steam Summer Sale called Kingdoms and Castles.  It's a really straightforward game without a ton of bells and whistles, but I often find strategy and management games to be great sources of inspiration for the day-to-day stuff that happens around my players when they're in town or traveling near large groups of people.

  • Father Figures, Dads, and Paternal Protectors - The Good, The Dad, and the Ugly

    Hello listeners and welcome back to a special Fathers Day episode of World Forge!  This week we dive into the kinds of trouble fathers and father figures can get into with their children, biological or otherwise.  For inspiration we look to some of our favorite good and bad dads, like Wolverine, Darth Vader, Joel from The Last of Us, and more, and we take a swing at creating our own daddy duo (well duo plus one it turns out) in the form of Geraldo the smuggler, and Abigail the street urchin.  Their journey takes them from My Fair Lady to The Road to The Most Dangerous Game...  it's a blast.

  • Billionaires and Benefactors - JP Worgen and the Fun %ers

    Welcome back listeners to another episode of World Forge, this week we're talking about the rich 1% that fund and supply our adventures for us.  Is capitalism the best socioeconomic option for YOUR fantasy world?  Probably not!  But sometimes it's nice to just have a fantastically wealthy guardian angel sitting on your shoulder!  We talk about the how and why an individual may become wealthy, and what they may want to do with all their gold once they acquire it.  Maybe they fund a payday loan outfit for down on their luck adventurers, or maybe they help build a new class of hero from nothing!


    We go over those and a few other interesting options, as well as develop our own rich old bastards, and talk about how they can help drive your stories forward.  Some of our inspirations include, Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Ebeneezer Scrooge, Carlisle Cullen, and... Harry Potter?  Don't worry we're always happy to find new ways to roast JK Rowling, but we do think our boy HP fits into this trope in an interesting way.

    Some of our other fun sources of inspiration for stories involving money, and those who have it, include mythological creatures like the Leprechaun, Dragons, Pixiu, and the humble Magpie!  We also definitely think you should check out S-Town!  It's a great podcast about a real life mystery involving a rumored hidden treasure, and the eccentric recluse who supposedly hid it away somewhere in Woodstock, Alabama.

  • Time Travelers and Time Machines - Clint Brownstone and the Dreamwalkers

    Welcome back listeners to another episode of World Forge, this week we're talking about time travel!  What happens when you introduce this classically world breaking element to your stories?  Is there a way to do it without ruining everything that came before?  Is there a "soft" version of time travel, and what kind of rules are needed to make this work?

  • Building Pokemon, Pokemon Trainers, and Pokemon Gyms - Dogfights... For Kids!

    Hello listeners!  Welcome back to another week of World Forge where we are talking about a topic that we've been looking forward to for some time now, Pokemon!  While we both have different history with Pokemon, it's a property we definitely both love, and are very excited to have explored for you.


    We spend our time this week creating some new and exciting Pokemon trainers, gyms, and even a few pocket monsters entirely!  We also try to answer some of the questions we know you've all just been dying to get answers for like: is a Shuckle an aphrodisiac?  Is Ash really still 11 years old?  And what happens when you use strength on that truck by the SS Anne?

  • Treasure Hunters - It (Doesn't) Belong in a Museum with Dante from Are We Rolling?

  • The World Forge 50th Episode Crossover Special - The Hags are Back in Town with Ben and Joe from We Speak Common!

    We did it listeners!  We made it to episode 50!  This is a huge milestone for us and we are so appreciative of all the support you've shown us since we started this little podcast.  We thought a fun way to celebrate 50 episodes would be to revisit some of our and your favorite creations from the last year or so, and see what happens when we stick them all in a blender together!

  • Matriarchs and Leading Ladies - The Reign of the Iron Witch aka Happy Mothers Day!

    This is an episode for all the moms out there listening!  Also everyone else...  ok so it's for everyone really but mostly it's for moms!


    This week we take a look at some inspiring leading ladies from reality and fiction, and try to come up with our own fantasy matriarchs!  We cover a lot of cool examples and land on a badass coal momma that wants nothing more than to create a safe life for her daughter, and a spitfire airship captain out for revenge with a faithful squad of soldiers in tow!

    We also had some really fun recommendations for you this week!  Above all we hope you gave your mom a call on mothers day, but besides that we recommend you go and listen to The Hazards of Love by the Decemberists!  It's an amazing indie rock opera about a baby rescued by a vengeful forest queen, and her struggle to hide him away from the human world.
