Georgia is a country at the crossroads.  Physically it is sandwiched between Europe, Russia and the Middle East.  Culturally, it is still trying to decide where it’s allegiances lay.  In 2013, an unusual alliance formed – black-frocked priests and far right extremists – joining forces to lead a violent attack on the LGBTI community in the country’s capital of Tblisi.

But there has been some change in this past six years. Despite threats of violence, the first ever Tblisi Pride was held this year. While it was only small, their plans for the future are big.  It is mainly due to a growing band or activists and advocates driving change for LGBTI people. We spoke to one such person – Giorgi Tabagari from Tbilisi Pride (https://www.facebook.com/TiflisPride/) in Georgia.

Sex sells!  It’s a well-documented truth. The media uses it all the time. But what if you are trying to stop people having sex?  Well that will certainly get a rise out of people too!  Here we look at the contentious, salacious and outrageous proposed law in Indonesia to criminalise any sex outside of marriage – gay or straight.

This proposed law comes off the back of rising homophobia over the past few years in Indonesia.  And there is one man who has seen it all before.  Dede Oetomo is a long-time Indonesian LGBT advocate – and founder of Gaya Nusantara (https://gayanusantara.or.id/) – which has been fighting for LGBTI rights in Indonesia for 30 years.  Find out if he is concerned about this proposed new law and its implications for LGBTI people from Indonesia and abroad.

USA: FOOTBALL – THE FINAL QUEER FRONTIER

It’s grand final week!  Whether you follow AFL or rugby league, the last two teams standing will take to the field this weekend to determine who will be called the Premiers for 2019.  And statistically speaking, standing among those footballers is almost certain to be a gay or bisexual player. No one that is publicly ‘out’ though.

We speak with a man who began to ‘come out’ while he was playing at the highest level of the American Football League. But it was not until his retirement that he went public. He has written a book about his journey titled My Life on the Line: How the NFL Damn Near Killed Me and Ended Up Saving My Life (http://www.akashicbooks.com/catalog/my-life-on-the-line/

Last month a proposed penal code in Indonesia, that would make sex outside marriage a crime punishable by up to 2 years in prison, created sensational media headlines and travel warnings of a “bonking ban” for Australian tourists visiting Bali.

Elsewhere in Indonesia, student protesters have taken to the streets in multiple cities to protest against the newly proposed code and also concerns about the roll back of corruption laws. LGBT flags have been spotted among the crowds.

In this extended interview with Dédé Oetomo, considered the godfather of LGBTI rights in Indonesia, we hear what he thinks about ‘bonking bans’ and social media responses and much more importantly about his personal story, the history of human rights, democracy and his insights into the current issues.

World Wide Wave explores what we as community can do to support our brothers and sisters in Indonesia.
