Silas is a Connecticut-born, very talented musician who now lives in Austin. His family frequently volunteered during WPKN fundraising when Silas was a kid, and it was great to welcome back as a mature and very accomplished artist. You can dance to his alt-country music, but he also has a wicked wit and a sharply honed political edge. He was influenced as a kid by hanging out with performing groups such as Bread and Puppet Theater who believe that art must be politically incisive as well as artistically fulfilling. This month features a conversation with Author Paula Whyman, recorded at Bryant Park in NY. Whyman’s first book You May See a Stranger, was published by TriQuarterly Books, and features connected stories throughout the life of one Miranda Webber, a reckless and erratic central character. The stories take place in Washington, D.C. throughout the 1980s, blending issues of sex, intimacy, racial tension, family dramas and world events into a dizzying array of scenarios, many of which have an eclectic soundtrack running through them. In the back of Whyman’s book are lyric credits; throughout the show we will sample songs from her soundtrack, as well as hearing more about her process and how this extraordinary book and it’s characters, came into being. Jenny Nordberg talks about her just published and most fascinating book The Underground Girls of Kabul: in search of a hidden resistance in Afghanistan. The book tells her discovery of bacha posh, a secret, hidden practice in which parents disguise young daughters as boys, usually until puberty, in a subversive attempt to counteract the oppression faced by girls and women in Afghan society.
