1997: The Birth of Attitude is a new series coming in September to the Wrestling With Art Podcast Network.
1997 was a consequential year for the World Wrestling Federation. An important threshold was crossed that changed everything about the promotion's creative identity. The result was The Attitude Era. Four characters played a central role in this altered creative direction: Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. The evolution of each of these core characters over the 12 months in 1997 speaks to the heart of the Attitude Era and everything it would come to represent.
Wrestling With Art presents: The Four Pillars, a new four-part series dissecting the fundamental pillars of the pro wrestling storytelling construct.
Part III explores the Drama Pillar. Wrestling is driven by drama not competition. The drama pillar is what breathes life into characters and creates compelling interpersonal conflicts. It is the connective tissue that binds the hero and heel pillars together to form a coherent narrative.

Wrestling With Art presents: The Four Pillars, a new four-part series dissecting the fundamental pillars of the pro wrestling storytelling construct. Behind every compelling hero stands a compelling villain. Part II explores the Heel Pillar, the second critical buttress of the pro wrestling storytelling construct. To be a heel is to exploit basic human emotions. It is the dirty business of getting inside a fan’s head and using their own psychological urges against them.

John Cena's surprising run with the US title, and subsequent US Open Challenge angle, made Monday Night Raw interesting again and put a huge emphasis on an oft overlooked mid-card title. Kevin Owen's debut in NXT, his dominant run as champion, and his surprising appearance on the main roster was the peak of unprecedented times for an expanding WWE roster. When those two beautifully crafted stories intersected in the summer of 2015, the feud between John Cena and Kevin Owens became the promotion's hottest story of the year.

It was a challenge like no other for Hulk Hogan, against a force never before experienced in the World Wrestling Federation. And when the dust settled on the epic encounter, a new star was born – one that would break the rules of reality and introduce fantasy-based storytelling to pro wrestling in a way that would change the industry forever. This is the important first chapter in the epic tale that is The Undertaker's long and storied career.

Between 1993 and 1996 The Public Enemy won the ECW tag team championships on four different occasions, but that almost didn’t matter. Their allure didn’t come from dramatic title wins or dominant championship reigns. They represented a counter culture no longer willing to remain underground. They were an unapologetic embodiment of the times, characters that looked and felt like the reality outside the arenas.
This is the story of two hoodies from South Central who came to call South Philadelphia home. This is the story of the birth of ECW and one of pro wrestling’s most iconic arena. This is the story of how one tag team helped pave the way for a roster willing to take it to the extreme.
