I learned how to write a book the hard way. I was a beginner writer. A newbie writer! A brand new writer with a dream! I didn't have a writing mentor and didn't know of any writing groups when I wrote my first book.
There were very few author youtubes and writing podcasts didn't exist yet. I didn't know many writers or authors either. There were so many things I didn't know about writing and publishing a book. It would have saved a lot of heartache and aggravation if I had known these things.
In this episode, I share the 10 things I wish someone had told me before writing and publishing my first book.

You wrote a book! Yay! That is wonderful and quite an achievement. I made many mistakes when I first began writing. There is so much a writer can get wrong. So many mistakes that are easy to make. Some were silly writing mistakes. Others more serious and time consuming to fix.
In this episode, I share the 10 things you don't want to do as a beginner writer and/or new author.

Four historical fiction authors talk food and how they integrate into their historical fiction. What did they eat in ancient times? Or medieval? Or even 5O years ago? You might be surprised. Is there a literary purpose for including food description in a novel? How do you research food eaten in your novel's time period, culture, and place?
In this episode, four authors from the southern California chapter of the Historical Novel Society dish about food and food in historical fiction. Yummy!

You wrote a book. The best book. Now it's time to look for an agent. Getting an agent is a challenge. Some writers get an agent right away. Some never do. Some authors go through several agents. And maybe not for the reasons you think.
In this author chat, I discuss the 3 main reasons why you can't get an agent and/or a publishing deal. ( Because they are different things.) Don't worry! There are things you can do to change that.

Taglines are like bait. They try to hook the reader. An author needs to spend time crafting a great tagline and book hook to get potential readers interested enough to read the back of book blurb. A catchy phrase entices and summarizes what your book is all about. The best book hooks do it in a few words.
Taglines and book hooks are needed for book promos, marketing, and capturing the main premise of your book.
Many new writers struggle with writing a n enticing catchy phrase for their books because we think like authors not marketers. In this episode, I share 20 tips for writing a tagline and book hook.
