Writers, After Dark

Fantasy author Evan Winter returns to talk about "The Fires of Vengeance", the second volume in his series "The Burning".

Evan talks about approaching his writing as a reader and connecting with the stories in their own right, any keeping those stories true to his vision, for the world and characters, and bringing realistic levels of humanity to those characters for the readers, making the entire story richer, and more.

And yes, the cover art for the first two books is stunning, so check out more of Carla Ortiz's artwork when you get a chance!

Actor & Producer Lou Diamond Phillips and his wife, illustrator Yvonne Phillips, stop by to talk about Lou's debut science fantasy novel, "The Tinderbox: Soldier of Indira", which Yvonne illustrated.

Both Lou and Yvonne talk about how the idea came about to write this story as a novel rather than as a screenplay and to use Yvonne's drawings inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fable "The Tinderbox". Lou talks about how the novel became something he worked on in between acting projects, and Yvonne talks about coming to draw sketches about fairy tales inspired from her affinity and appreciation of manga, what types of stories and story elements excite them the most, and so much more.

And yes, a sequel is being planned, and has its roots in fairy tales as well.

Dark fantasy author Shaun Hamill's debut "A Cosmology of Monsters" is a fascinating coming-of-age fable that explores the nature of mental illness and monsters and the grey areas where they may be one and the same.

Shaun also goes into a lot of how he crafted the story, since this is his debut novel and covers a lot of ground for him learning how to write the story he wanted to tell.

Dark fantasy and Horror author Christina Henry stops by to talk about her newest book "The Ghost Tree", a story about the dark secrets small towns harbor that can make those of the "big city" pale by comparison.

She talks about her interest in fantasy and amateur investigator tales, and wanting to write a coming-of-age story with a girl as the protagonist rather than the sidekick, but also one that isn't specifically "just for girls".

Christina also details her writing process, especially her preference for writing by hand to start a story and enjoying the meditative feel of that process and more.

Colin Dickey stops by to talk about his new book, "The Unidentified: Mythical Monsters, Alien Encounters and Our Obsession with The Unexplained", peek into several categories of these stories, as well as a larger look at human tendencies to believe in the unusual and irrational.

His exploration shifted from looking at the actual fringe theories into examining the phenomenon of how belief in conspiracy theories persists through time despite the advances in technology and communication, and statistics seem to indicate that belief in many of these pseudoscience claims and fringe theories is on the rise.

And reach out to Colin if you have a weird story or a ghost story to share with him!
