Rangers 5, Tigers 0 – Eovaldi wins 6th straight decision, Seager has 4 RBIs, Rangers beat Tigers 5-0
Nathan Eovaldi won his sixth straight decision, Corey Seager hit a three-run homer with four RBIs and the Texas Rangers defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-0. Eovaldi allowed four hits and a season-high three walks in five innings with four strikeouts. He is 6-0 with a 1.38 ERA in his last eight starts. Brock Burke, Jonathan Hernández and José Leclerc finished a five-hitter, the Rangers’ fifth shutout this year. Matthew Boyd gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in six-plus innings. Detroit had been trying to reach .500 for the first time since a 4-4 start in 2022.
Angels 6, White Sox 4 – Drury, Angels spoil Hendriks’ return with 6-4 victory over White Sox
Brandon Drury and Matt Thaiss homered during a fast start for the Los Angeles Angels, who spoiled Liam Hendriks’ return for the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4 victory. Drury hit a three-run shot and Thaiss followed with another drive during a four-run first inning against a shaky Michael Kopech. Hendriks pitched the eighth in his first big league appearance since he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The crowd of 23,599 roared when he walked out to the bullpen after the fourth, and then saluted the All-Star closer with a standing ovation when he entered the game.
Cubs 1, Rays 0 – Stroman pitches 1-hitter as Cubs beat major league-leading Rays 1-0
Marcus Stroman pitched a one-hitter, and the Chicago Cubs beat the major league-leading Tampa Bay Rays 1-0. Stroman simply dazzled, delivering his fourth complete game and second shutout in nine seasons. His only other one was against the Cubs during his 2014 rookie season with the Toronto Blue Jays. He set a season high with 105 pitches and matched one with eight strikeouts. The right-hander walked one in winning his third straight start and helping the Cubs bounce back from a weekend sweep by the Cincinnati Reds. The only hit Stroman allowed was when Wander Franco delivered a clean single to left leading off the seventh. He then walked Brandon Lowe, but got out of that jam by getting Randy Arozarena to fly out and Josh Lowe to ground into a double play.

Liam Hendriks has returned to the mound with the Chicago White Sox, marking another memorable moment in his return from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks allowed two runs in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels. The closer was reinstated from the 15-day injured list before the series opener. Fellow reliever Jimmy Lambert was placed on the IL with right ankle inflammation. The 34-year-old Hendriks had no record and a 10.80 ERA in six rehab appearances with Triple-A Charlotte. The Australian right-hander allowed one run and one hit in one inning in his last game with the Knights on May 16.

Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and Caleb Martin gave Miami 26 points and 10 rebounds in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals to help the Heat beat the Celtics 103-84 and turn back Boston’s attempt at an unprecedented comeback. The Heat recovered after blowing a 3-0 lead in the series and advanced to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons. They will face the Western Conference champion Nuggets. Game 1 is in Denver on Thursday night. Miami is the first No. 8 seed to play for a championship since the 1999 New York Knicks. Top-seeded Denver has been waiting since sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers on May 22. Game 6 hero Derrick White scored 18 for Boston.
NBA – 76ers hire former Raptors coach Nick Nurse, AP source says
A person with knowledge of the decision says the Philadelphia 76ers have hired coach Nick Nurse weeks after he was fired by the Toronto Raptors. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the move. Nurse led the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship after they beat the 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Nurse will replace Doc Rivers, who was fired after he led the 76ers to their second straight 50-win season behind NBA MVP Joel Embiid but again failed to lead them to the Eastern Conference finals.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic both picked up straight-set victories in the first round of the French Open against opponents ranked outside the Top 100 and making their Grand Slam debuts. Alcaraz is seeded No. 1, Djokovic is No. 3 and most everyone expects them to face each other in the semifinals. Alcaraz beat Flavio Cobolli on Monday. Djokovic defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic. With 14-time champion Rafael Nadal sidelined by injury and missing the clay-court major tournament, Alcaraz and Djokovic are popular picks to emerge as the men’s champion.
NASCAR – Blaney wins Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte to end winless drought
Ryan Blaney pulled away late to win the rescheduled Coca-Cola 600 on Monday at Charlotte Speedway, giving team owner Roger Penske a sweep of the Memorial Day weekend’s top races in the United States. Josef Newgarden won a record-extending 19th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday for Team Penske. It marked the first time Team Penske has earned a sweep of the two races in the same year. Like Newgarden, Blaney went into the crowd to celebrate with fans. Blaney took the lead from William Byron on a restart and led the final 26 laps to win his first Cup Series race since the 2021 Daytona’s Coke Zero Sugar 400. Blaney’s victory snapped a 59-race drought.
Indy 500 – Column: Indy 500’s ending creates controversy and conspiracies
It’s called “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” because the Indianapolis 500 is supposed to be one of the most dramatic and difficult races in the world. Sure, it’s an automobile race. But it’s also very much entertainment, even if Marcus Ericsson vehemently disagrees. The controversial ending to the 107th running of the Indy 500 gave Josef Newgarden the win. Newgarden drives for Roger Penske, who owns the race and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. So when IndyCar went to an unprecedented one-lap shootout that allowed Newgarden to win the race, well, Ericsson was furious and conspiracy theorists went wild.
Indy 500 – IndyCar sure to investigate wheel that flew over stands from Indy 500 wreck
IndyCar owner Roger Penske says he is sure series officials will investigate what led to a wheel coming loose during a crash in the Indianapolis 500. The wheel from Kyle Kirkwood’s damaged car ended up sailing over the catch fence and grandstands before landing on a parked automobile. Nobody was hurt. The wheels are supposed to have tethers that keep them attached in the event of a crash, but it appeared that the tether came loose or was ripped apart. Penske said “we were very fortunate we didn’t have a bad accident.” Kirkwood and fellow driver Felix Rosenqvist were uninjured in the crash. The car that was hit by the tire had to be towed and the driver was given a ride home after the race.
NCAAMLAC – Notre Dame wins first men’s lacrosse national title in program history
Liam Entenmann made a season-high 18 saves and Brian Tevlin scored a go-ahead goal with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to help Notre Dame claim its first men’s lacrosse national title with a 13-9 victory over Duke. Third-seeded Notre Dame (14-2) had lost in its previous two championship game appearances in 2010 and 2014 — both to Duke. The top-seeded Blue Devils (16-3) were playing in their seventh national championship game in program history. Entenmann made eight saves on nine shots in the first half as Notre Dame cruised to a 6-1 lead after scoring six unanswered goals — from six different players. Notre Dame scored two goals in the final 30 seconds of the third for a 9-7 lead and Quinn McCahon capped a 6-1 scoring run.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says a vote on the Oakland Athletics’ prospective move to Las Vegas potentially could come when the league’s owners meet next month. Manfred noted that “it’s very difficult to have a timeline” regarding the move “until there’s actually a deal to be considered.” The MLB owners meetings take place June 13-15 in New York. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said Wednesday that legislative leaders and the Athletics had reached a tentative agreement on a $1.5 billion stadium funding plan that would lure the franchise to Las Vegas.

NFL – Suspended Lions WR Williams says he wasn’t aware of NFL rules on gambling
Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, suspended for the first six games of the season, said he was unaware of the NFL gambling policy that he violated. Williams told reporters Thursday that the suspension hit him out of the blue. The league suspended former Lions players Quintez Cephus and C.J. The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed Brandon McManus in hopes of upgrading their special teams. The move came two days after Denver dropped the veteran kicker and former team captain. Patterson was with the Lions in 2021 and during training camp in 2022. McManus had been scheduled to count nearly $5 million against Denver’s salary cap in 2023. Indy 500 – 4 years after missing 500 with Alonso, McLaren Racing very much a contender
McLaren Racing missed the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 with Fernando Alonso in a humiliating defeat that could have stopped the team from making a full-time move to IndyCar. Nevada Governor. Joe Lombardo announced Wednesday a preliminary agreement between his office, state legislative leaders and the Oakland Athletics for a stadium funding plan. It comes after weeks of negotiations over how much public assistance the state will contribute to a $1.5 billion ballpark in Las Vegas. The preliminary agreement indicates a funding bill could come to the Nevada Legislature in the coming days. It still needs approval from both the Senate and Assembly, with less than two weeks until the session ends. The A’s have been looking for years for a home to replace Oakland Coliseum, where the team has played since arriving from Kansas City for the 1968 season.

Ryan Lomberg and Anthony Duclair had the other goals for Florida, which swept a series for the first time in franchise history.

NBA – Still down 3-1 to Heat, Celtics cling to hope as East finals shift back to Boston
The Celtics finally found cohesion between their defense and offense in their Game 4 win, capitalizing off 16 Heat turnovers and finding their 3-point shot. Now down 3-1, the question is whether Boston can carry that energy home, a place where it is just 4-5 this postseason to keep alive its hopes of extending the series. At the very least the Celtics’ win made their hopes of becoming the first NBA team in 151 tries to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series shift from insurmountable back to possible heading into Game 5.
NBA – Ja Morant is ‘fine,’ police say after welfare check due to cryptic post
Police in Tennessee have conducted a welfare check on suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant and say “he is fine” after cryptic messages appeared on his Instagram account and were later deleted. The post from Wednesday included messages and pictures saying “Love ya ma,” “Love ya pops” and “You da greatest babygirl love ya.” A fourth message simply read: “Bye.” Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Morris told The Associated Press deputies checked on Morant at his home Wednesday morning. Morris says Morant told them he was “taking a break from social media.” Morant was suspended from all team activities May 14 after a video showed him flashing a gun for a second time.
NCAA – NCAA survey shows 58% are wagering; athlete-only study is set for fall
An NCAA-commissioned survey of 18- to 22-year-olds shows more than half acknowledged placing sports wagers and two-thirds of those who live on college campuses saying they engage in betting. The survey results come less than a month after the baseball coach at Alabama and athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were found to have made wagers in violation of NCAA rules. The purpose of the survey was to explore the prevalence of gambling. Thirty-percent of the 3,500 respondents said their typical wager was between $10 and $20. But 6% said they have lost more than $500 in a single day.
NCAA – NCAA tax records show ex-president Emmert paid nearly $3.3 million in 2021
NCAA tax records show former president Mark Emmert was paid nearly $3.3 million in 2021. Emmert’s 13-year tenure leading the NCAA officially ended in March. In April 2022, the association announced Emmert would step down. He was replaced by former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker. Emmert received almost $2.8 million in salary and another $83,000 in bonuses. Overall, NCAA revenue increased 10% to $1.22 billion in the 2021-22 fiscal year, while its expenses rose 16% to $1.19 billion. Those expenses included $53 million in legal fees.
Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600, Formula 1 Grand Prix highlight Memorial Day weekend
Auto racing’s biggest weekend looms with the 107th Indianapolis 500, Coca-Cola 600 in NASCAR and Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix. Alex Palou seeks consecutive wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after claiming the pole for Sunday’s 107th running of the 500. He won the Indy Grand Prix there earlier this month. Later that day, NASCAR’s longest race commences with the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The day begins with F-1’s Monaco Grand Prix through the streets of Monte Carlo, which arguably offers the best scenery along with the world’s best race car drivers.

MHSAA – 2023 State Football Finals pushed back to Saturday and Sunday
It was announced on Wednesday that Michigan State’s game against Penn State this fall will be played on Black Friday at Ford Field in Detroit, a day after the Lions traditional Thanksgiving Day game. However since Michigan State’s game was moved to Ford Field, the high school state finals games will be pushed back to Saturday and Sunday instead of Friday and Saturday.

Royals 4, Tigers 1 – Royals snap 4-game skid with 4-1 win over Tigers
Maikel Garcia had three hits, an RBI and a run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Mike Mayers allowed one run on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Royals. He struck out a career-high eight and walked one. Jose Cuas (3-0) was the winner, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits in five innings. He struck out nine and walked two.
White Sox 4, Guardians 2 – González, Grandal, and Cease lead White Sox rally to top Guardians 4-2
Romy González’s two-run double broke a seventh-inning tie and sent the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. González snapped a 2-2 tie with his hard hit off Cleveland rookie Logan Allen, who was probably left in the game one batter too many by Guardians manager Terry Francona. Yasmani Grandal homered for the White Sox, who have won four of five to stay within striking distance in the wide-open and winnable AL Central. Chicago’s rally helped Dylan Cease win for the first time since April 10. Rookie Will Brennan homered for the Guardians.
Cubs 7, Mets 2 – Christopher Morel homers again as Chicago Cubs beat New York Mets 7-2
Christopher Morel, Matt Mervis and Seiya Suzuki homered and the Chicago Cubs cooled off the New York Mets with a 7-2 victory. Mervis had three RBIs for the Cubs in the opener of a nine-game homestand. Morel extended his homer streak to five games with a solo shot against Stephen Nogosek in the seventh inning. He became the first player with such a streak for the Cubs since Sammy Sosa in June 1998. New York had won five in a row — all by one run. But Tylor Megill turned in his worst start of the season, sending manager Buck Showalter to the loss on his 67th birthday.

Jimmy Butler scored 29 for Miami, which led by nine in the second half before getting outscored 48-22 in a 14-minute stretch that turned the game and perhaps the series completely around. Miami still leads the series 3-1 with game 5 on Thursday night back in Boston.
NFL – NFL expects fewer kickoff returns with new fair catch rule inside 2
The NFL has pushed the kickoff return further toward irrelevance with a priority on player safety. League owners voted for a one-year trial of an enhanced touchback rule that will give the receiving team the ball at its own 25 with a fair catch of a kickoff anywhere behind that yard line. The proposal passed despite coaches and players across the league saying they didn’t like it. They argued that it will create uglier plays with squib and corner kicks that are impossible for fair catches.
NFL – Bears, Fields seeking payoff after offseason investments
It’s been a big offseason for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. He walked in Ohio State’s graduation ceremony two weeks ago after earning a degree in consumer and family financial services. He also has some major additions to his supporting cast after the Bears made moves they hope will help their quarterback develop. Fields says that’s “a great feeling.” He addressed the media Tuesday for the first time since the end of the season. Since then, the Bears traded the No. 1 pick in the draft to quarterback-needing Carolina for receiver DJ Moore. They also made several additions to their offensive line.
NFL – Rodgers strains calf during warmups, sits out first Jets practice open to media
Aaron Rodgers never made it past warmups in his first New York Jets practice in front of the media. The 39-year-old quarterback strained a calf while participating in conditioning drills Tuesday. Rodgers watched quarterback drills and remained on the field during practice, but was without his helmet and threw no passes. Rodgers downplayed the injury and said it’s not too serious. New York acquired Rodgers from Green Bay on April 26. Organized team activities began Monday and Rodgers participated. The session Tuesday marked the first with media in attendance.
NFL – Bills Damar Hamlin eases back into practice 5 months since near-death experience
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin eased his way back onto the practice field by taking part in individual drills and stretching sessions during the team’s voluntary minicamp some five months after having a near-death experience on the field. Coach Sean McDermott said the team is taking things one day at a time when asked of Hamlin’s status. McDermott did not provide any timetable as to when Hamlin can begin on-field sessions a month after being cleared to resume his career. The 25-year-old Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field during a game at Cincinnati on Jan. 2.
NFL – NFL, Goodell close to finalizing 3-year contract extension, ending in 2027
Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL have agreed on the framework of a three-year contract extension that will keep him in place until 2027. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed the development on Tuesday at the league meetings in Minnesota. Goodell’s current deal expires in 2024. He has been commissioner of the league since replacing Paul Tagliabue in 2006. Irsay says he’s under the impression Goodell will retire after the extended contract expires and be involved in the development of his successor.

Matt Vierling had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Tigers. Alex Lange (2-0) earned the victory with two hitless innings of relief. Jose Cisnero picked up his first save. Guardians 3, White Sox 0 – Zunino hits 2-run homer, Guardians beat White Sox 3-0 to end slide
Rookie Hunter Gaddis pitched six strong innings for his first major league win and struggling Cleveland catcher Mike Zunino connected for a two-run homer, sending the Guardians over the Chicago White Sox 3-0. Gaddis was recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Columbus and gave the Guardians a badly needed quality start after they were swept over the weekend in New York, losing all three to the Mets by one run. Zunino, who has been a target of fan complaints because he’s not been hitting, belted his third homer in the seventh off reliever Gregory Santos. Before he connected, Zunino was in a 1 for 31 slump with 21 strikeouts. The White Sox had their three-game winning streak stopped.

MLB – Guardians rookie Brennan accidentally kills bird on infield during game
Cleveland rookie Will Brennan hit a hard grounder that accidentally killed a bird wandering on the infield grass in the Guardians’ 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. With none out and a runner at first base, Brennan hit a smash that connected with a small bird who had wandered into a dangerous place. The ball sent the bird, well, flying and when Brennan got to first he reacted by putting his hands on his helmet and grimacing. Following the game, Brennan posted an apology on Twitter. It’s the second time in a week that a major league player has unintentionally killed a bird.
MLB – A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper let go after racial slur on air
Oakland Athletics broadcaster Glen Kuiper was let go by NBC Sports California after using a racial slur during a telecast while describing a trip to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Kuiper was suspended by the network earlier this month following his slur that aired during a pregame segment of an A’s game against the Kansas City Royals on May 5. Kuiper talked about a trip to the museum with colleague Dallas Braden but seemingly mispronounced the word “Negro,” making it sound instead like a slur. NBC Sports California says after an internal review that the network decided to “end its relationship” with Kuiper.

NFL – NFL approves limited flexible scheduling for Thursday night games
NFL owners have approved a flexible scheduling policy for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime Video. The rule covers Weeks 13-17, and teams would have their games moved only with at least 28 days’ notice. The league could push a Thursday night matchup in that range to Sunday afternoon if there is a more desirable game. The mechanism is currently in place for Sunday night and Monday night games. The flexible scheduling for Thursday night games was approved on a trial basis for 2023 only. Owners also approved at their spring meetings a rule allowing teams to play an emergency quarterback from the inactive list if the first two are injured during a game.
NFL – Super Bowl goes back to Bay Area; 49ers to host in 2026 at Levi’s Stadium
The Super Bowl will return to the Bay Area in 2026 at the home of the San Francisco 49ers. NFL owners approved the site at their spring meetings. This will be the third time for the big game in the Bay Area. Levi’s Stadium hosted Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara when Denver beat Carolina. The 49ers won Super Bowl 19 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto when they beat Miami after the 1984 season. The 2026 game will be Super Bowl 60. The next Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Indy 500 – Wilson fractures vertebrae in crash with Legge in Indy 500 practice session
Stefan Wilson fractured a vertebrae during a heavy crash with Katherine Legge in practice for the Indianapolis 500 on Monday. The British driver will not be allowed back into the car for Sunday’s race. Wilson was immobilized on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace but gave a thumbs-up as he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. Legge was able to climb from the cockpit of her crumpled machine on her own. It was the first wreck in the two-week build-up to the race. It was unclear who will step into Wilson’s car for Sunday, but JR Hildebrand has been at the speedway. He’s made 12 consecutive starts, nearly winning as a rookie in 2011 before finishing second, but could not put together a ride this year.

Our WSJM Sports Player of the Week is Trey McGinnis of St. Joseph High School boys track and field. It was a record week for Trey, He won the 100 and 200 meter dash and the SMAC Conference Meet at Portage Central, helping St. Joe finish 2nd, but his times in the 100 and 200 were not only St. Joe school records, but SMAC Conference records as well..
We caught up with Trey and coach Todd Rose before the regional meet last week.

And it was his fifth major title. Only 14 players have won more. It was the first major by a LIV Golf player since the Saudi-funded league began nearly a year ago. Breanna Stewart scored a franchise record 45 points and New York beat Indiana 90-73, handing the Fever a 20th consecutive loss that matched the WNBA record for futility. The Fever equaled the Tulsa Shock, who lost 20 straight games in 2011. Indiana lost 18 consecutive games to close out last season before falling to the Connecticut Sun on Friday in their opener. Indiana plays at Atlanta next Sunday. Stewart broke Cappie Pondexter’s record of 40 points with a three-point play late in the third quarter. NaLyssa Smith had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana. NCAAFB – Schembechler son resigns at Michigan after offensive social media content
A son of longtime Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler has resigned from his position with the Wolverines, with the school saying it was aware of his social media activity that may have caused “pain” in the community. Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler stepped down Saturday, just days after he had been hired as assistant director of recruiting on Jim Harbaugh’s staff. The Detroit News reported that Schembechler’s Twitter feed contained posts and likes of offensive material, including some that suggested slavery and Jim Crow were positives to strengthen Black individuals and families. Schembechler played for his father, who coached Michigan from 1969-89. In a statement Sunday night, he said he had “inexplicably and irresponsibly” liked items on social media and asked for forgiveness.
Indy 500 – Palou’s record run earns Ganassi third straight Indy 500 pole
Alex Palou will lead the field to green in the Indianapolis 500 after the young Spaniard put together the fastest four-lap pole run in history Sunday. He edged Rinus VeeKay and Felix Rosenqvist and gave Chip Ganassi Racing its third pole in a row. Palou whipped four laps around the historic 2.5-mile speedway at an average of 234.217 mph. That was a mere 0.007 mph faster than VeeKay, who still gave Ed Carpenter Racing a front-row starting spot for the ninth time in the last 11 years. Palou surpassed the record pole run of 234.046 mph that Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon put up last year. It also was the second-fastest qualifying effort, trailing only Arie Luyendyk’s 236.986, which he set the day after pole qualifying in 1996.
NASCAR – Larson dominates for third NASCAR All-Star race win, takes home $1 million
Kyle Larson turned in a dominating effort to win his third All-Star race and earn $1 million in the Cup Series’ return to North Wilkesboro Speedway following a 27-year absence. Larson became only the fourth driver to win the All-Star race at least three times. Jimmie Johnson has the most with four victories, while Larson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt have three. Larson is the first to win the All-Star race at three different tracks. He has won in Charlotte in 2019 and Texas in 2021. Bubba Wallace finished second in the 200-lap non-points exhibition race, followed by Tyler Reddick, Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott.
