Tigers 7, Rangers 2 – Ibanez and Rogers homer as the Tigers win 7-2 over Texas after two more pitchers get hurt
Andy Ibañez and Jake Rogers homered for the Detroit Tigers, who overcame the early departures of their first two pitchers to beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 7-2. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest were already hurt and out of the game before Ibañez hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Rogers went deep with two outs in the sixth to chase Rangers starter Andrew Heaney. Six Tigers pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts, the most against Texas this season.
Angels 2, White Sox 1 – Trout, Ohtani give Angels 2-1 walk-off win over White Sox
Mike Trout scored on a game-ending wild pitch, Shohei Ohtani hit his 26th home run, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Trout slid home head-first on the bad throw by Aaron Bummer, helping the Angels get a critical seven-game homestand off to a successful start. After having struck out in each of his first three appearances, Trout drew a leadoff walk against Reynaldo López (2-5). Bummer then came in to face Ohtani, who drew his own walk. The two Angels superstars successfully executed a double steal, which set up Trout’s heroics and the team’s second walk-off win on a wild pitch this season. Carlos Estéves (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win. Luis Robert Jr. homered for the third straight game for the White Sox.

MLB – Tigers’ Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest leave early in Texas with discomfort
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd departed with left elbow discomfort after throwing only 15 pitches against the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Reliever Will Vest left an inning later with right knee discomfort. Boyd left the mound with a trainer after several minutes consulting with him. Manager A.J. Hinch took the ball away from the left-hander, who at one point in the conversation pointed at his arm. Vest was clearly in discomfort after landing awkwardly on a 1-1 pitch in the second inning.

NBA –Wembanyama says he won’t play for France’s national team at this year’s World Cup
Victor Wembanyama says he won’t play with France’s national basketball team at this year’s World Cup in order to protect his still developing body. The No. 1 draft pick for the San Antonio Spurs told L’Equipe newspaper it was a “difficult” decision to make and that it was “irrevocable.” The World Cup is scheduled from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. Wembanyama says he made the choice “on his own” after consulting with close friends and his medical team. L’Equipe reports that Wembanyama told the France coach and other players from the team about his decision over the weekend.
NHL – Blackhawks acquire forward Taylor Hall in multiplayer trade with Bruins
The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Taylor Hall in a trade with the Boston Bruins. The Blackhawks sent pending restricted free agents Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula to Boston for Hall and the expiring contract of Nick Foligno. It gives some valuable salary-cap space to the Bruins heading into free agency. The 31-year-old Hall had 16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games last season. Hall has played alongside at least five fellow No. 1 picks. He is likely to make it six because Chicago is expected to take Connor Bedard at No. 1 in this week’s draft.
NHL – Top prospects for the NHL draft from Bedard to Fantilli to Reinbacher and more
The NHL Draft opens Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee. The top prospects include forward Connor Bedard and defenseman David Reinbacher. Bedard is projected to be selected first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Reinbacher is under consideration to be the first defenseman drafted. The wild card of the draft is Russian forward Matvei Michkov, who could raise a red flag for some teams because he’s under contract with the Kontinental Hockey League through 2025-26.
NHL – Where to pick Russian players is a top question at the NHL draft
Matvei Michkov is probably the best hockey prospect out of Russia in nearly a decade. He might be the best since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin in 2005. But Michkov still is no lock to get drafted in the top five because he’s still under contract in the KHL for three more seasons. That’s giving NHL teams reason to worry he might never make it to North America. The war in Ukraine has also meant the dilemma over Russian players isn’t just limited to Michkov because of resulting travel restrictions and international bans that have made scouting more difficult.
NHL – Connor McDavid wins third NHL MVP, falls one vote short of unanimous selection
Connor McDavid has won his third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP after the highest-scoring season by a player in more than a quarter-century. McDavid fell one vote short of unanimous selection. McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers. The Edmonton Oilers’ captain led the league with 64 goals, 89 assists and 153 points. That’s the most points since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. One voter out of 196 picked Boston’s David Pastrnak as MVP. San Jose’s Erik Karlsson also became a three-time award winner, receiving the Norris Trophy as top defenseman. Seattle’s Matty Bernier’s won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the year.
NCAABSB – LSU wins 1st College World Series title since 2009, beating Florida 18-4
LSU cranked up its offense a day after it gave up the most runs ever in a College World Series game and won its first national title since 2009 with a 18-4 victory over Florida in the third and deciding game of the finals. LSU staved off elimination three times in bracket play and bounced back from a 24-4 loss in Game 2 to claim its seventh championship. That’s second to Southern California’s 12. The Tigers wiped out an early 2-0 deficit with a six-run second inning against Jac Caglianone and Cade Fisher.
Golf – PGA/LIV– Players returning from LIV part of Saudis’ agreement with PGA Tour
Now that the PGA Tour and European tour have a deal with the Saudis, one step is deciding how players can return from LIV Golf if they so choose. That’s part of the framework agreement that was signed last month. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the agreement. It was among documents requested for a Senate hearing on July 11. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, wants more details on how the deal came together. There still aren’t many details spelled out in the agreement. One part is deciding how players return from LIV Golf and what would be a fair punishment.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead RBI single that chased Chicago starter Marcus Stroman in the fourth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cubs 7-5 to earn a split of their weekend series at London Stadium. The payoff comes Wednesday, when the 17-year-old from North Vancouver, British Columbia, is expected to be selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft. The rules have changed since Bob Melvin and Bruce Bochy were big league catchers when big collisions with runners trying to score were just part of the game. The rules are intended to protect catchers. But runners are now sometimes safe even after being tagged out and without any collision. San Diego manager Melvin and Texas manager Bochy both had outs recorded by their teams this week become runs after replay viewed that their catchers obstructed the runner. Zhang said the biggest change for her has been the demands on her time.
Hockey – Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goalie-heavy class of 2023
Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goaltender-heavy class of 2023. Fellow netminders Tom Barrasso and Red Wing Mike Vernon were also among the five players elected. Former NHL forward Pierre Turgeon and Canadian women’s hockey star Caroline Ouellette were also chosen. Stanley Cup-winning coach Ken Hitchcock and late executive Pierre Lacroix were picked in the builder category. Lundqvist is set to be inducted into the Hall in his first year of eligibility after winning Olympic gold for Sweden in 2006 and a pro career that included backstopping the New York Rangers to 11 playoff appearances in 12 seasons. Vernon was so surprised he thought board chairman Lanny McDonald, a teammate when they won the Cup together with Calgary in 1989, was calling to ask him to play golf. The two-time Cup champion who was also playoff MVP when he won it in 1997 with Detroit had been eligible since 2005. "The game has meant a lot to me throughout my life," Vernon said. “It is an emotional time for me. Might be a long time coming, but it’s still worth it.”
FIFA – WWC – Morgan and Rapinoe selected for the US Women’s World Cup roster
Eighteen-year-old Alyssa Thompson is among the 23 players selected for the United States team that will defend its title at the Women’s World Cup next month. Thompson is among a mix of veteran and newcomers named Wednesday to the team by head coach Vlatko Andonovski. Among the experienced players are Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, who will each be making a fourth World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand. Thompson is joined by fellow up-and-coming stars Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, who is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman.
Olympics – IOC warns Afghanistan about Olympic status over denying sports to women
The Afghanistan team’s status for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been put in question by the IOC over growing frustration with the Taliban blocking access to sport for women and girls. The International Olympic Committee says it “continues to be extremely concerned” about the sports situation in Afghanistan despite its repeated calls for action. The IOC says it has the right to take further measures. And it notes details for an Afghanistan delegation going to the Paris Games haven’t been decided. The IOC could suspend Afghanistan’s Olympic body for government interference and support athletes to compete as an independent team.

Kansas City wasted a 4-0 lead and dropped to 0-15 in games started by Jordan Lyles, who allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He is 0-11, the most losses in the major leagues, and he broke the team record for winless starts at the start of a season, which had been set by Vida Blue in 1983. The Athletic reported that Green would opt out. Green would have to notify the Warriors of his decision by June 30.
NBA – Victor Wembanyama arrives in US from France ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft
Victor Wembanyama has arrived in the U.S. for the NBA draft. The plane carrying Wembanyama from France arrived at Newark International Airport outside of New York City on Monday. He’s widely expected to be the No. 1 pick on Thursday by the San Antonio Spurs. Some fans knew what flight he was on and when the plane was landing, and many were waiting. Wembanyama cheerfully signed autographs, scrawling his name onto basketballs and Spurs jerseys before making his way into a waiting vehicle.
NBA – Suns continue whirlwind of change under new owner Mat Ishbia
Mat Ishbia’s five-month tenure as the new owner of the Phoenix Suns has produced a whirlwind of change. Nobody seems completely safe as the Michigan native continues his quest to deliver Phoenix its first NBA title. The aggressive owner oversaw his latest big move Sunday, when the Suns put together the framework for a trade that would send 12-time All-Star Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and other compensation to the Washington Wizards in exchange for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal. More moves could be on the horizon.
NHL – Canada’s Connor Bedard honored as IIHF’s first male player of the year
Presumptive No. 1 NHL draft pick Connor Bedard has been honored as the International Ice Hockey Federation’s first male player of the year. Bedard helped Canada win the past two world junior championships before turning 18. He was MVP of the most recent tournament after leading all players in scoring. Bedard is expected to be taken first in the draft next week by the Chicago Blackhawks. Hilary Knight was voted the IIHF’s first female player of the year for captaining the U.S. to gold at this year’s women’s world championship.
NHL – Vegas-Florida Stanley Cup shows the value of street hockey in many US markets
The Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers was the scene of street hockey being played by kids outside in the desert and by the Everglades. The series showcased the benefits of ball and roller hockey in many U.S. markets where ice is hard to come by. The NHL earlier this year launched a street hockey program aimed at knocking down barriers to the sport that range from cost and time commitments to many families simply not thinking they belong. The aim is to create more interest in the sport even if just at a casual level.
Golf – Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA/LIV deal
Eight-time major champion Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA Tour’s new business partnership with Saudi backers of LIV Golf. He has sent a letter to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan asking if the deal was the only way to solve the tour’s financial hardship. The tour has an agreement with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the European tour to pool businesses in a new for-profit company. One person who has seen the agreement says it contains assurances the tour would keep a controlling voting interest no matter how much money the Saudis invested.
Golf – Wyndham Clark’s US Open win on Father’s Day is also a tribute to his late mom
The U.S. Open wrapped up on Father’s Day. Golf’s newest champion would be the first to tell people he’s always been a mama’s boy. Wyndham Clark’s victory will be remembered for how a newcomer to the big time held off some of the biggest names in the game to stamp a poignant exclamation mark on a U.S. Open that had been to that point kind of hard to love. Clark’s mother, Lise, died of breast cancer in 2013, which sent him spiraling. The road back led him to leave college at Oklahoma State for a fresh start at Oregon. It involved more than one crisis in confidence. It hit a crescendo Sunday when Clark held off Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler for his first major title.
Soccer – Mexico soccer coach Diego Cocca fired after 3-0 loss to US

Golf – PGA – Wyndham Clark plays big and becomes a major champion at the US Open
Wyndham Clark is the U.S. Open champion and certainly played the part. All he did was hold his nerve against a world-class collection of contenders. Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club. And to think two months ago the 29-year-old from Denver was looking for his first PGA Tour title. Now he has two wins and is a major champion. And he likely will be part of the Ryder Cup team this fall. It was more disappointment for McIlroy. He birdied his first hole and that was his only birdie.

NHL – Why Marty Walsh left the Biden administration to run the NHL players’ union
Marty Walsh was less than halfway through his term in the Biden administration as labor secretary when the phone rang with an interesting opportunity. The call was about a job running the NHL Players’ Association. The former mayor of Boston and longtime Bruins fan was intrigued, interviewed and earlier this year got the role as executive director. Now three months into the job, Walsh is trying to get to know players and what they care the most about. His most pressing issue is the Arizona Coyotes and their 5,000-seat arena after a referendum for a new building failed.

Vegas Golden Knights fans lined the Las Vegas Strip for a Stanley Cup victory parade and a rally in front of their home arena to mark the team’s first NHL championship. Fan rallied in front of T-Mobile Arena after a motorcade along Las Vegas Boulevard Saturday night. At one point people separated barricades and climbed fences but the crowd otherwise remained orderly. Above the arena stage where the hockey players gathered with the trophy, a banner displayed the names of victims of the October 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people and injured more than 850. People in the crowd Saturday recalled the role the team played in helping to rebuild the spirit of the community.

MLB – Governor signs public funding bill for new A’s stadium in Vegas
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo has signed into law a $380 million public financing package to help build a Major League Baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics on the Las Vegas Strip. He signed the bill Thursday in Carson City a day after the Democrat-controlled legislature approved the plans. Hours earlier, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred outlined a months-long approval process for the A’s proposed move there. The $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL’s Vegas Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup this week in just their sixth season.
MLB – MLB to start months-long approval process for Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas
Major League Baseball laid out a detailed process to approve the Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas, which appears set to become the second shift of a franchise in the last half-century. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says: “I feel sorry for the fans in Oakland. I do not like this outcome." A day after the Nevada Legislature approved public funding, Manfred said Oakland will file a relocation application and he will establish a relocation committee, which would define operating territory and broadcast territory. That group will make a recommendation that will go the sport’s executive council and then to full ownership.

Golf – PGA – Fowler, Schauffele break US Open record with 62s at L.A. Country Club
Rickie Fowler is the first player in U.S. Open history with a 62. He held that record for all of 15 minutes until Xander Schauffele joined him. It was an extraordinary morning for the so-called toughest test in golf. Fowler had 10 birdies and finished his round with a two-putt par from just inside 60 feet. Schauffele was two groups behind him and played bogey-free. They settled for their place in the record book. Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark played in the afternoon and each shot 64 to get within two shots of the record-breaking duo. Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman finished three shots off the lead.
Golf – PGA – Justice Department looking into PGA Tour deal with LIV’s Saudi backers,
A person familiar with the matter says the Justice Department is looking into an agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabian backers of LIV Golf. It wants to determine whether last week’s surprise deal violates federal antitrust statutes. The Justice Department already was looking into any antitrust issues involving the PGA Tour and Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Both golf leagues are involved in an antitrust case now in federal court. The agreement would end that litigation. The deal is for the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi’s national wealth fund to pool commercial businesses in a new for-profit company.

MLB – A’s stadium deal wins legislative approval in Nevada as MLB weighs move to Vegas
The Oakland Athletics have cleared a major hurdle for their planned relocation to Las Vegas after the Nevada Legislature gave final approval to public funding for a portion of a proposed $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof. The deal approved Wednesday still needs the governor’s signature and approval from MLB, but both are anticipated. Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo is the one who proposed it. The Nevada Assembly made minor changes Wednesday to the measure the Senate had approved Tuesday just hours before the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup. The Senate voted final approval Wednesday night.
Golf – Chaos rules the day as US Open comes to the glitz of Los Angeles
Brooks Koepka says he enjoys chaos. He’s come to the right place at this U.S. Open. Players have been trying to digest the news of the PGA Tour’s shock partnership with LIV Golf’s Saudi Arabian backers. And then PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had to turn off day-to-day control to two executives because of what’s described as a medical situation. Still to be determined is what kind of chaos Los Angeles Country Club delivers. The U.S. Open starts Thursday on a course smack dab in the middle of LA on a course that looks big and plays small.
Golf – US Open barranca offers beauty, danger at LA Country Club
The word of the week at the U.S. Open is barranca. It stems from the Spanish word meaning cliff, precipice, gully or ravine. Merriam-Webster defines it as “a deep gully or arroyo with steep sides.” At Los Angeles Country Club, the barranca, lined with sand and dotted with native grasses and ball-entangling plants, winds through most of the first nine holes and part of the back nine, as well. Much like the seawall cliffs at Pebble Beach or the church pew bunker at Oakmont, it’s the barranca that stands out as the most feared and talked-about feature for the U.S. Open’s first return to LA since 1948.

McDermott expanded and clarified on the limited statements he made a day earlier by saying Diggs didn’t skip the team’s mandatory session on Tuesday, but was in fact excused. He also said a series of discussions airing out Diggs’ concerns have left the team and receiver “in a real good spot.” Diggs’ participation was his first with the team this offseason after he skipped the Bills voluntary workout and practice sessions.

Golden Knights 9, Panthers 3 – Golden Knights blast Panthers 9-3 in Game 5 to capture first Stanley Cup title
The Golden Knights delivered their city a true Vegas-style party from dazzling passes to a Mark Stone hat trick to all-out goal celebrations. The Knights captured the young organization’s first Stanley Cup with a 9-3 romp Tuesday over the beaten up and exhausted Florida Panthers. Coach Bruce Cassidy started five of the original Vegas players known as the Misfits and put the sixth on the second shift. Cassidy sounded confident the day before the game that his team would play well, and it certainly did. Vegas blew open a one-goal game in the second period to lead 6-1. The nine goals tied the record for the most in a Cup Final. Jonathan Marchessault, who ended the postseason with a 10-game points streak, received the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP. Mark Stone’s hat trick — with the third into an empty net with 5:54 left — was the first in a Stanley Cup Final since Colorado’s Peter Forsberg in 1996, also against the Panthers.

Nuggets 94, Heat 89 – Nuggets take home 1st NBA title in rugged 94-89 win over Heat
Confetti flying in Denver. The Nuggets sharing hugs while passing around the NBA championship trophy. Scenes that for decades seemed impossible finally turned into reality for the Nuggets. Denver outlasted the Miami Heat 94-89 in an ugly, frantic Game 5 that did nothing to derail Nikola Jokic, who bailed out his teammates with 28 points and 16 rebounds on a night when nothing else seemed to work. The win gave the Nuggets their first title in 47 years in the league. Jokic was named MVP and is the first player to lead everyone in points, rebounds and assists in a single playoffs.
NBA – Denver’s Nikola Jokic adds missing piece to impressive resume with NBA title
The Denver Nuggets’ first NBA championship cements Serbian center Nikola Jokic as one of the game’s preeminent player. The Nuggets’ superstar was denied a third consecutive MVP this season. But he was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player after dominating the series with Miami just as he did earlier rounds when the Nuggets knocked off Minnesota, Phoenix and the LA Lakers. Jokic finally fully celebrated his impressive run through the playoffs once the Nuggets had secured the first NBA championship in franchise history.
NBA – Analysis: Nuggets built a championship team the right way, and built it to last
This may be just the start for the Denver Nuggets. They are the newly crowned NBA champions after beating the Miami Heat on Monday night and winning the finals in five games. They have five starters that are all age 30 or under. They have a superstar in Nikola Jokic leading the way and an elite second option in Jamal Murray. They have a roster filled with players who have bought in to be something bigger than themselves. The Nuggets were built the right way and built to last. That’s why they should be in the championship mix next year as well.

NHL – Original Golden Knights hope to fulfill owner’s wish of Stanley Cup by 6th year
Golden Knights owner Bill Foley was aggressive from the beginning. He said he wanted to win the Stanley Cup in six years. Vegas nearly won it the first year. The Knights made the Stanley Cup Final before losing in five games to the Washington Capitals. High expectations came from the top and came early for the six players who remain from that team. The Knights take a 3-1 series lead into Tuesday’s Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. This is Vegas’ sixth season.
NHL – Accustomed to playing with injuries, Panthers prepare for Game 5
The Florida Panthers took the ice for Monday’s practice without several key players, most notably Matthew Tkachuk. The Panthers also were seemingly without any concern as they prepare for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights, down 3-1 in the series. The common theme in the Panthers’ locker room after practice was referring to their 3-1 series comeback in the opening round against the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Boston Bruins. This time, however, it’ll take a lot more than hockey’s so-called “puck luck” in what’s been a hard-hitting, physically challenging, brawl-filled series.
Tennis – Novak Djokovic has 23 Slams, so is he the GOAT? He leaves that debate to others
Novak Djokovic’s 23 Grand Slam titles put him atop the list for the most in history by a man. He broke a tie with rival Rafael Nadal and is now three ahead of the retired Roger Federer. Djokovic got his 23rd by beating Casper Ruud in the French Open final on Sunday. Djokovic was then asked how it feels to be the greatest male tennis player in history. He did not give a direct answer. But the numbers sure back his case. Most Grand Slam titles. Most weeks at No. 1. The only man to win every Masters 1000 event twice. And so on. He now heads to Wimbledon halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam.
