  • NL takes All Star Game for the first time since 2012 – Wednesday Morning Sports Update

National League 3, American League 2

National 3, American 2 – National League snaps All-Star Game losing streak, tops AL 3-2 behind Elias Díaz homer
Elias Díaz hit a two-run homer off Félix Bautista in the eighth inning, and the National League snapped a nine-game losing streak in the All-Star Game with a 3-2 win over the American League. The NL won for the first time since an 8-0 victory in 2012 in Kansas City thanks to Díaz, a catcher who became the first Rockies player to win the All-Star MVP award. Díaz, who was non-tendered by the Pirates at the end of 2019, drove a 2-2 pitch from Baltimore’s hard-throwing closer deep to left to put the NL in front. Díaz was the lone representative for Colorado in his first All-Star Game appearance.

    Friday
Chicago White Sox at Atlanta Braves, 7:20 p.m.
Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs, 8:05 p.m.
Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners, 10:10 p.m.

MLB – Díaz becomes unlikely All-Star MVP, 3 ½ years after cut loose by Pirates
Elias Díaz may be the most unlikely All-Star MVP. Just 3 1/2 years after Pittsburgh failed to offer a contract and allowed him to become a free agent, his go-ahead, two-run homer off Félix Bautista in the eighth inning lifted the National League over the American 3-2. A first-time All-Star at age 32, the Colorado catcher put his name on an award won by Willie Mays, Joe Morgan, Frank and Brooks Robinson, both Ken Griffeys and Mike Trout. Díaz says: “I honestly can’t believe that my name is going to be next to some of those names."

MLB – White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. out of All-Star Game due to calf tightness
Chicago White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. did not play in the All-Star Game after feeling tightness in his right calf during the Home Run Derby. The White Sox said that Robert underwent an MRI in Seattle and is listed as day-to-day. The team said Robert felt the tightness in the calf during the opening round and did not play in the All-Star Game as a precaution. Robert will be evaluated before the White Sox restart the season on Friday in Atlanta. Robert was the No. 1 seed in the Home Run Derby and beat Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman 28-27 in the opening round. Robert lost to Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena in the semifinals 35-22.

MLB – Atlanta’s Truist Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field under consideration for ASG
The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are under consideration for upcoming All-Star Games. Next year’s game is scheduled for the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field in Arlington, and the 2026 game will be at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. The 2021 All-Star Game was awarded to Atlanta’s Truist Park by Major League Baseball in 2019 but in April 2021 was moved to Denver’s Coors Field following objections to sweeping changes to Georgia’s voting laws. Commissioner Rob Manfred says “Atlanta is in the mix of clubs for the ‘25 All-Star Game.”

MLB – Manfred has no intention of altering Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has no intention of altering Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball and said the sport’s commercial deals with gambling companies have no impact on the status of the career hits leader. Rose agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation found Rose placed numerous bets on the Cincinnati Reds to win from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. Manfred rejected Rose’s application in 2015. Manfred says: “Pete Rose violated what is sort of rule one in baseball, and the consequences of that are clear in the rule.”

MLB – MLB open to consider increasing time on pitch clock in postseason
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will consider increasing time on the pitch clock for the postseason but is reluctant to adjust an innovation the sport considers a great success. In the first season of the clock, the average time of a nine-inning game is 2:38, on track to be the fastest since 1984. It is down from 3:04 last year and 3:09 in 2021, the last season before PitchCom was introduced. Manfred says "we’re going to continue to talk to the players and adds: “I think you ought to play the postseason the way you play the regular season. There’s exceptions.”

NBA – Flopping, challenge rules changed by NBA’s Board of Governors
The NBA’s Board of Governors approved two rule changes for the coming season Tuesday. One change gives coaches a second challenge if their first one is successful. The other will mean a technical foul will be called against players who flop. The challenge rule change is something that coaches have wanted for some time. Coaches who challenge a call and are successful will get the chance to make a second challenge. Teams must have a timeout in order to call for a challenge; that timeout would not be retained even if a coach won that first challenge.

Tennis – Elina Svitolina has the Ukraine war and her baby in mind as she beats Iga Swiatek
Elina Svitolina is back in her first Grand Slam semifinal since 2019. She got there at Wimbledon by beating No. 1 Iga Swiatek in three sets Tuesday. Things are much different for Svitolina now than they were the last time she made it to the final four at a major tournament. She is a mother who gave birth to a daughter nine months ago and returned to the tour three months ago. And she is concerned about the war in her native Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022. Svitolina will face Marketa Vondrousova for a berth in Saturday’s final. Novak Djokovic will play Jannik Sinner in the men’s semifinals.

Golf – Saudi investment in PGA Tour will top $1 billion. And Norman will exit as CEO
A PGA Tour executive has told Congress that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund agreed to invest more than $1 billion in a new commercial entity controlled by the tour. Ron Price, the tour’s chief operating officer, also said at a hearing Tuesday that Greg Norman will be ousted as the CEO of LIV Golf if the business deal between the Saudis and the tour is finalized. The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is looking into the negotiations between the tour and the Saudis and the geopolitical implications of Saudi investment in American sports. However, there was no indication that Congress would block the tour from going into business with the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

Steve Yzerman made a major move to give the rebuildng Detroit Red Wings a desperately needed boost. The Hockey Hall of Famer acquired goal-scoring winger Alex DeBrincat from Ottawa on Sunday and signed him to a four-year extension worth about $7.8 million annually. Yzerman made a series of subtle deals earlier this summer, adding depth at every position, before making a splash with DeBrincat.   DeBrincat, who is from Farmington Hills, Michigan, was a fan of Detroit’s 2008 Stanley Cup championship team. His favorite player was dazzling center Pavel Datsyuk.

NCAAFB – Northwestern fires coach Pat Fitzgerald after hazing allegations surface

Northwestern President Michael Schill says the culture within Fitzgerald’s program was “broken” in some ways.

Tennis – Djokovic wants Wimbledon to start matches earlier at Centre Court.
Novak Djokovic is a bit tired of not getting on Centre Court at Wimbledon until nearly 9 p.m. The waiting. The uncertainty. The rushing to try to finish matches by the 11 p.m. local curfew. The annoyance at having to stop midway through a contest and wait until the following day to resume. He offered a solution Monday afternoon after winning his 32nd consecutive match in the grass-court tournament by wrapping up a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Hubert Hurkacz that began Sunday evening but was halted after two sets: Start play in the All England Club’s main stadium earlier than 1:30 p.m.

Victoria Azarenka says it “wasn’t fair” that she was booed at Wimbledon after her loss to Ukrainian rival Elina Svitolina. Azarenka is from Belarus. She also seemed to give a slight wave to Svitolina, who won in a third-set tiebreaker. But boos rained down from the crowd at No. 1 Court as Azarenka gathered her equipment. Azarenka said she’s not sure the crowd understood what was happening. She says she was trying to be respectful of Svitolina.

NCAAFB – Northwestern will gather more information on football hazing allegations
Uncertainty continues to swirl around the Northwestern football program after allegations of hazing led to the suspension of coach Pat Fitzgerald this week. One day after the suspension, The Daily Northwestern published a story that detailed some of the allegations while claiming that Fitzgerald “may have known that hazing took place.” That led university president Michael Schill to write an open letter to the community acknowledging he may have erred in the level of punishment handed down and that he planned to speak to university leaders to determine his next steps. Meanwhile, football practice begins in just a few weeks with the season opener Sept. 3 at Rutgers quickly approaching.

Tennis – Djokovic and Swiatek won at Wimbledon. Protests and rain capture the attention
The developments at Wimbledon include Novak Djokovic joining Roger Federer and Serena Williams as the only players in tennis history to win 350 Grand Slam matches. A runner-up two years ago, Karolina Pliskova, exited in the first round against a qualifier. A player seeded No. 8, Maria Sakkari, took the opening set 6-0 but managed to lose. Ho-hum. Those turned out to be among the least unusual happenings around the All England Club on Day 3 of this year’s tournament. That’s because so much of the buzz around the place Wednesday concerned protests and, yes, rain..

Jace Peterson bunted pinch-runner Tyler Wade to third to start the 10th. Tyler Horton (0-1) struck out Shea Langeliers for the second out before Noda slapped a single to left — one of just two hits for Oakland in the game — to break the scoreless struggle. MLB – Cubs manager Ross rips umpire and criticizes decision to close roof in Milwaukee
Infuriated about the plate umpire and the ballpark roof, Chicago Cubs manager David Ross let loose after Tuesday’s wild extra-inning win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs blew a late four-run lead but rebounded to beat the Brewers 7-6 in 11 innings. Ross praised his team’s resiliency, but many of his postgame comments focused on a series of “frustrating” calls and events throughout the game. Ross was perturbed that plate umpire Erich Bacchus prematurely called out Dansby Swanson when there were only two strikes, and he felt a Brewers baserunner interfered with a throw that allowed a run to score. Ross and first base coach Mike Napoli were both ejected. Ross also questioned why the Brewers closed their retractable roof on a mostly sunny afternoon.

MLB – Ohtani leaves Angels game with blister, says he doesn’t plan to pitch in ASG
Shohei Ohtani says he’s not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game next week after leaving the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-5 loss to the San Diego Padres with a blister on the middle finger of his right hand Tuesday. The two-way superstar could still play a significant role if he remains the starting designated hitter for the American League in Seattle. Ohtani exited on the mound against the Padres after giving up consecutive home runs in the sixth inning. The right-hander’s start had been pushed back a day due to a cracked fingernail. His velocity was down, and he left trailing 5-1. His exit came several hours after the Angels learned they’ll be without fellow All-Star slugger Mike Trout for several weeks because of a broken left wrist.  Trout will need surgery to repair his injury.

Golf – LPGA – Column: US Women’s Open at Pebble reminds veterans what they’re missing
The U.S. Women’s Open is finally at Pebble Beach, the most recognizable of all U.S. Open courses. That’s a little too late for so many Hall of Famers who are at Pebble for a reunion of past Open champions. But it’s all about going forward, the USGA is making up for lost time. It’s one thing to be at Pebble Beach. What figures to lift the profile is for the Women’s Open to be going to Riviera and Oakland Hills, back to Oakmont and Interlachen. Being at historical venues help winners become part of golf history.

Tennis – Djokovic, Swiatek, Venus and Gauff get Wimbledon started on Day 1
Wimbledon gets started on Monday with some of the biggest names in tennis in action. That includes Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, Venus Williams and Coco Gauff. It is the year’s third major tournament — and Djokovic won the first two: the Australian Open in January and the French Open in June. That puts him halfway to the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969. He came close to the feat in 2021. He fell just one victory short that season when he lost in the final of the U.S. Open. He seeks a fifth consecutive title at the All England Club and eighth overall. Both would tie the records for a man. Djokovic’s title at Roland Garros was his 23rd at a Slam event. That set the men’s mark in that category.

NHL – Draft wraps up with 11 picks for Chicago, dearth of trades ahead of free agency
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired their latest generational talent along with a big dose of speed in one of the NHL’s largest draft hauls. They also made another big move for their future Thursday by adding veteran Corey Perry to help teach No. 1 overall pick Connor Bedard how to be the leader the Blackhawks need to contend for a Stanley Cup. Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson says he couldn’t be happier with how this draft worked out with 11 players taken. The Anaheim Ducks added a big Swedish center to their young, talented offense in Leo Carlsson at No. 2 overall.

NHL – Blackhawks acquire Perry from Tampa, adding more experience to rebuild
The Chicago Blackhawks continued surrounding their youth-laden and Connor Bedard-headed rebuild with yet another experienced veteran, acquiring forward Corey Perry in a trade with Tampa Bay. The Blackhawks gave up a seventh-round pick in next year’s draft to acquire the 18-year player with the belief they can sign Perry, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent Saturday. The 38-year-old Perry joins his fourth team in five years after spending his first 14 seasons with Anaheim. The trade was made during the second day of the NHL draft, and a day after Chicago selected Bedard at No. 1 overall.

NHL – Red Wings pick up Yamamoto, Kostin in trade with Oilers for future considerations
The Detroit Red Wings added much-needed scoring depth, acquiring 24-year-old forwards Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin in a trade with Edmonton on Thursday for future considerations. The move clears salary cap space for Oilers general manager Ken Holland, who stepped aside when the Red Wings hired general manager Steve Yzerman four years ago. Yamamoto had 10 goals and 15 assists in 58 games last season, which was his sixth in Edmonton. Kostin had 11 goals and 10 assists in 57 games with the Oilers after arriving from St. Louis in an October trade.

NHL – Flat salary cap and lack of high-profile stars lessens focus on start of free agency
A flat salary cap combined with a lack of high-profile players hitting the market could make the start of the NHL’s free agent signing period more of a dud on Saturday. Numerous teams are already being challenged to retain their own players. They include the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Boston Bruins, who currently have less than $11 million of space and nine roster spots to fill. The bigger headlines are expected to come from teams re-signing their stars to long-term deals, such as the Sabres and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. The Columbus Blue Jackets, meantime, are anticipated to announce the hiring of Mike Babcock as coach after his existing contract with Toronto expires on Friday.

NBA – Veteran C Andre Drummond exercises his option to return to Bulls next season

The two-time All-Star has averaged 13.2 points and 12.7 rebounds over 11 seasons with Detroit, Cleveland, the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Chicago. The Bulls went 40-42 last season and lost in the play-in tournament.

NBA – James Harden picks up $35.6 million option with the 76ers, AP source says
James Harden picked up his $35.6 million contract option for next season with the Philadelphia 76ers, with the franchise exploring trades to move the veteran scorer, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Harden informed the 76ers of his choice Thursday ahead of the midnight deadline to pick up the option, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the decision was not made public. The 33-year-old Harden could have declined the option and decided to try for free agency. The Sixers had the right to offer him a $210 million, four-year deal, $8 million more overall than any other team.

NBA – The already hectic NBA offseason now poised for free agents to make moves
It’s already been a busy offseason for player movement in the NBA. Now free agency begins Friday evening. There are big names that could be on the move, including Khris Middleton and Draymond Green. There are some players like Max Strus who are in line for big paydays for the first time. Trades are still a possibility, especially since James Harden has picked up his player option. And teams now have to navigate new rules that come with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that goes into effect on Saturday.

NFL – NFL suspends 3 indefinitely for violating the gambling policy and a 4th gets 6 games

The PHF will cease operations under the deal, according to one of the people.

NHL – Connor Bedard, as expected, taken first in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Connor Bedard with the first pick in the NHL draft. The move should kick-start a hopeful new era for Chicago. Bedard is a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history. Chicago took Patrick Kane first in 2007 and he helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cup championships. Anaheim selected Sweden forward Leo Carlsson second, followed Columbus picking Michigan freshman Adam Fantilli. The Blackhawks took center Oliver Moore with the 19th pick in a previous trade with Tampa Bay.  The Red Wings also had two first round selections. Poile is retiring Friday after overseeing the startup of the Nashville Predators as an expansion franchise in 1997. Bettman then told fans they weren’t booing him up to their usual standards. He urged them to do better and made sure to appreciate them as the boos grew louder.

MLB – Tigers starter Matthew Boyd will have season-ending Tommy John surgery
Detroit Tigers starter Matthew Boyd will have season-ending elbow reconstruction surgery after tests Tuesday revealed a partial sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament. The lefty exited his start against the Texas Rangers on Monday night after only 15 pitches. Boyd was placed on the 60-day injured list. The Tigers didn’t say when Boyd would have the procedure, commonly known as Tommy John surgery. The timetable for recovery is typically at least 12-14 months. The Tigers have 10 pitchers on the IL. Right-hander Matt Manning was activated from the 60-day IL to start Tuesday against Texas. Left-handed reliever Anthony Misiewicz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo.

NHL – Blackhawks to begin rebuild with anticipated pick of Connor Bedard in NHL draft
Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson can begin building up his roster again after spending much of the past year tearing it down. That process is expected to begin with the Blackhawks selecting forward Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft on Wednesday. Beyond that is when the intrigue begins. The intrigue revolves around when Russian Matvei Michkov is selected, because he is under contract to play in his native Russia through 2025-26. Another question is when the first defenseman goes off the board in what is a top-heavy class of forwards. This NHL draft might have been considered the chase for Adam Fantilli as the top overall pick rather than the Connor Bedard sweepstakes in a different year. Fantilli’s got the size and can put the puck in the net. The Canadian also was only the third freshman to win college hockey’s Hobey Baker player of the year award. Fantilli isn’t worried of what might have been because he can’t play another game or score another goal to improve his resume. Fantilli also says Bedard’s season was phenomenal. So he plans to sit back and enjoy the NHL draft on Wednesday night. The Detroit Red Wings have the 9th and 17th pick.

NASCAR – NASCAR great Jimmie Johnson’s in-laws found shot to death in Oklahoma
Police in Muskogee, Oklahoma, are investigating the shooting deaths of three relatives of NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson. Muskogee police spokesperson Lynn Hamlin says the bodies of Jack Janway; his wife, Terry Janway; and their 11-year-old grandson, Dalton Janway, were discovered Monday at a home in Muskogee. Hamlin confirmed the three are the parents and nephew of Johnson’s wife, Chandra Janway. Hamlin says investigators believe Terry Janway shot and killed her husband and grandson before shooting herself. Johnson’s race team has announced it is withdrawing his No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago.

NASCAR – NASCAR brings season to Chicago for the first street race in Cup Series history
It’s a big week for NASCAR as it visits downtown Chicago for the Cup Series’ first foray into street course racing. The Xfinity Series runs the The Loop 121 on Saturday, and the Cup Series takes over for the Grant Park 220 on Sunday. It has been quite an adventure to get to this point, especially when it comes to setting up for the event in the heart of a busy city. The races are the centerpiece of a NASCAR festival that also includes music and other entertainment options.

NCAAFB – Former Arkansas and Michigan QB Ryan Mallett dies in an apparent drowning
Former Arkansas and Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett, who also played for New England, Houston and Baltimore during five seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 35. Mallett died in an apparent drowning, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. Mallett was a football coach at White Hall High School in his native Arkansas, and the school district also confirmed his death in a post on its website. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said the university “lost an incredibly special person.”  Mallett played for the University of Michigan for one season before finishing his college career at Arkansas. He passed for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns in two seasons with the Razorbacks.  Mallett was selected by New England in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. He appeared in four games with the Patriots during the 2012 season, completing 1 of 4 passes for 17 yards.

NCAA – NCAA rules on NLI changed
New policies in the National Letter of Intent Program will eliminate athletes having to sit out a full season of competition for not complying with NLI rules under some circumstances. The binding agreement between athletes and schools has been part of recruiting since 1964. The Collegiate Commissioners Association no longer will penalize athletes who renege because of a head coaching change or for leaving his or her original school after one quarter or one semester. A release must be requested in both instances. The CCA also is allowing athletes who transfer to another four-year school to sign NLIs.

Golf – PGA – PGA Tour board reminds players they’ll have vote on final deal with Saudis
The PGA Tour is seeking to assure players they will have a say in the tour’s new partnership with the Saudi funders of LIV Golf. The tour’s policy board issued a statement Tuesday noting players would have to approve any final agreement between the once-rival tours. The statement was released after a meeting of the board, which includes five players: Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson. The framework agreement between the tour and the Saudis says the parties would work together to decide how defectors to LIV Golf can return and what kind of punishment they would face.

NFL – History says highly touted rookie TE’s don’t always make a major impact right away
This rookie class of tight ends already made quite an impact on the draft. They’ll have to buck history if they’re going to leave the same type of impression on the field this year. Tight end is one of the toughest positions for rookies to make huge contributions. Only five rookie tight ends in NFL history have caught as many as 60 passes. This year’s rookie class features nine tight ends who got drafted in the first three rounds. That’s the most since the common draft era began in 1967.
