Orioles 7, Tigers 4 – Santander’s 2-run homer icing on Orioles’ rally over Tigers
Anthony Santander’s two-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning in which the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. Joey Ortiz became the first Orioles player to drive in three runs in his MLB debut since Don Baylor on Sept. 18, 1970. Baltimore improved to 9-1 in its last 10 games. Detroit left 15 runners on base. The Tigers’ Chasen Shreve took the loss. Bryan Baker got the win with 1 1/2 scoreless innings of relief. Felix Bautista pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
Rays 14, White Sox 5 – Paredes drives in 5 as Rays pound Cease, White Sox 14-5
Isaac Paredes had a career-high five RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 14-5 victory. Brandon Lowe homered and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay in the opener of a four-game series. Lowe, Yandy Díaz, Luke Raley and Josh Lowe each had three hits as the AL East leaders bounced back nicely after they were shut out in back-to-back home games by Houston. Tampa Bay finished with 16 hits. White Sox ace Dylan Cease was tagged for seven runs, six earned, and nine hits in four-plus innings.
Cubs 5, Padres 2 – Hosmer, Velázquez, Swanson hit HRs, Cubs beat Padres 5-2
Eric Hosmer and Nelson Velázquez hit back-to-back homers and Dansby Swanson added his first of the season to help the Chicago Cubs top the San Diego Padres 5-2. Manny Machado homered for the Padres, who had won five of seven. Hayden Wesneski got the win. Hosmer and Velázquez gave the Cubs the lead for good with consecutive homers off Seth Lugo in the bottom of the second. San Diego’s Matt Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to create a save situation for Brad Boxberger, who worked the ninth for his second in as many chances.

MLB – Hendriks, 4 others closer to return for slumping ChiSox
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks could go out on a rehab assignment next week in a big step in his recovery from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks announced his diagnosis in January and completed his final round of chemotherapy three weeks ago. The 34-year-old right-hander announced last week on Instagram that he was cancer-free. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn says Hendriks will return to Chicago during the team’s upcoming series against Minnesota for “a pre-rehab assignment check-in,” and then his assignment could start “potentially immediately after that series.”

NFL – NFL draft dominated early by QBs
Quarterbacks dominated the first part of the NFL draft. Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson were among the top four picks Thursday night, an expected result in a league where teams know finding a franchise QB is the quickest path to success. The Carolina Panthers selected Young, the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback, with the No. 1 pick, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players. The Panthers chose the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner over Ohio State’s Stroud, Florida’s Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis. New coach Frank Reich said earlier in the week that the organization reached a consensus Monday after several weeks of deliberation.
NFL – Lions take RB Gibbs No. 12, LB Campbell at No. 18
The Detroit Lions traded down to select Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 pick overall in the NFL draft on Thursday night, making a relatively surprising selection. The Lions gave up their first pick and a third-rounder to Arizona for a first-round selection and the 34th spot overall. They drafted Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18 overall. Detroit is hoping to make the most of an opportunity to improve its on-the-rise franchise in the draft after addressing needs on both sides of the ball in free agency.
NFL – Chicago Bears draft Tennessee OT Darnell Wright at No. 10
The Chicago Bears selected Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL draft. The move should give quarterback Justin Fields more protection. The Bears traded back one spot with the Philadelphia Eagles and got a fourth-round pick in 2024. The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Wright was first-team, All-SEC as a right tackle last season. He played left tackle in 2021. The Bears finished with the worst record in the league last year at 3-14.
NFL – Colts select QB Anthony Richardson at No. 4 in NFL draft
The Indianapolis Colts followed their draft plan by selecting quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth pick of the NFL draft. The highly anticipated move had been expected even before the Colts finished last season with seven straight losses and a 4-12-1 mark, the bigger debate was over who to draft. But when the Carolina Panthers took Bryce Young with the top overall pick and C.J. Stroud went No. 2 to Houston, general manager Chris Ballard stood pat at No. 4 and selected Richardson instead of former Kentucky star Will Levis.
NFL – Cowboys get Michigan DT Mazi Smith 26th overall in NFL draft
The Dallas Cowboys have drafted Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith with the 26th pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Dallas picked Smith after Buffalo moved a spot ahead of the Cowboys and drafted Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid. Tight end was a popular position with pundits after Dalton Schultz left in free agency a year after playing on the franchise tag. The Cowboys could use more offensive firepower around quarterback Dak Prescott. But the run defense was the weakest part of an an otherwise solid unit in a second consecutive playoff season for Dallas in 2022.
WNBA – Brittney Griner gets emotional discussing Russian detainment
Brittney Griner got emotional quickly while speaking to reporters for the first time since her nearly 10-month detainment in Russia on drug-related charges. The WNBA star had to take a moment to compose herself after being asked about her resiliency through the ordeal. Griner’s first news conference drew more than 100 people, including Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, members of the Phoenix Mercury organization and Griner’s wife, Cherelle. Griner was arrested in February 2022 at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years but was released in a prisoner swap in December.
NCAAFB – Notre Dame transfer QB Buchner commits to Alabama and Rees
Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner has committed to Alabama, where he will be reunited with former Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Buchner announced his decision in a Twitter post. Entering his third college season, Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback. He hurt shoulder in Week 2 and missed the rest of the regular season. He returned to lead the Fighting Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina. Alabama completed spring practice last weekend with no clear front-runner in a quarterback competition that include third-year player Jalen Milroe, redshirt freshman Ty Simpson and two freshmen.
NCAAFB – Harbaugh leaves spring with ‘best version’ of Wolverines yet
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he came out of spring practice with the best team he’s had since taking over in 2015. The two-time defending Big Ten champion Wolverines bring back 84% of their offensive production. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards will work behind the nation’s best offensive line. The defense is loaded, especially in the front seven, and linebackers Ernest Hausmann (Nebraska) and Josaiah Stewart (Coastal Carolina) are transfers who showed this spring they’re capable of making big impacts. There’s much less clarity elsewhere in the conference. Ohio State still hasn’t determined the successor to C.J. Stroud. Purdue’s Ryan Walters is finding his way in his first head coaching job. Wisconsin’s move to coordinator Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense under Luke Fickell had a bumpy start. Matt Rhule’s building project at Nebraska is just beginning. As many as six quarterback competitions will go into the fall.
NCAAVB – Nebraska sells 83,000 tickets for outdoor volleyball event
Almost 83,000 tickets have been sold for Nebraska’s outdoor college volleyball doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Aug. 30. The event starts with a Division II exhibition between Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney and will be followed by a regular-season match between the Cornhuskers and Omaha. Athletic director Trev Alberts said the goal has gone from setting the NCAA volleyball attendance record to breaking the U.S. women’s one-day record for any sport. The record is 90,185 for the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Brewers 6, Tigers 2 – Caratini, Wiemer homer, Brewers top Tigers 6-2, Báez hurt
Victor Caratini and rookie Joey Wiemer homered to back Freddy Peralta, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Detroit Tigers 6-2 to avoid a series sweep and stop a three-game losing streak. Detroit shortstop Javier Báez, who entered with a 10-game hitting streak, left in the first inning after being struck on the left hand by a 93 mph Peralta pitch,. The Tigers said Báez’s hand was bruised and X-rays were negative. Peralta allowed a pair of unearned runs and four hits over six innings. Bryse Wilson, Hoby Milner, Peter Strzelecki and Devin Williams finished a six-hitter. After Brian Anderson misplayed Nick Maton’s fly to right for an error in the fourth, Detroit scored a pair of unearned runs on the first of Akil Baddoo’s two doubles and Jake Rogers’ run-scoring single.
Blue Jays 8, White Sox 0 – Springer hurts hand, Blue Jays finish sweep of White Sox 8-0
Yusei Kikuchi struck out eight batters over 5 2/3 innings, Bo Bichette hit a solo home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the slumping White Sox 8-0 to complete a three-game sweep. The loss Wednesday extends Chicago’s losing streak to seven. Blue Jays outfielder George Springer left in the fourth, one inning after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch from White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech. X-rays did not reveal a fracture. Bichette went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and scored twice. He hit a first-pitch homer off Jimmy Lambert in the seventh.
Padres 5, Cubs 3 – Tatis, Cronenworth lead Padres past Cubs 5-3
Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in three runs with a pair of singles, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. With runners at second and third in the seventh, Tatis hit Brandon Hughes’ 2-1 slider past diving Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom to score both and give the Padres a 4-3 lead. He knocked in an insurance run in the ninth with a line shot to center. Nick Martinez (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings for the win in his first relief appearance this season after four starts. Josh Hader worked around Yan Gomes’ double and a walk in the ninth for his ninth save. Hughes (0-1), the second of five Cubs relievers took the loss.

NHL – Wild, Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Senators going to Sweden
The NHL is sending four teams to Sweden next season as part of its annual Global Series. The Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators will each play two games among them in Stockholm in November. It’s one of two trips outside North America the league has planned for 2023. The Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes are set to play two exhibition games in Melbourne, Australia, in September. The NHL is trying to significantly expand hockey interest Down Under while also cultivating and growing an already fervent fanbase in Scandinavia and across Europe. The Red Wings will face the Senators on Nov. 16 and the Leafs on Nov. 17. The league chose the Wild, Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Senators not only for their current volume of Swedes but the organizations’ history of them, including Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg and Ottawa’s Daniel Alfredsson, who also played one season for the Red Wings.

NFL – Rodgers hopes to help Jets add to ‘lonely’ Super Bowl trophy
Aaron Rodgers believes he’s where he needs to be. And the New York Jets’ new quarterback thinks they can do big things together. The four-time NFL MVP was introduced by the team Wednesday to much fanfare in the team’s auditorium. Rodgers said it’s a surreal day for him and he’s looking forward to the new adventure in New York. The Jets received Rodgers, the No. 15 overall pick and a fifth-rounder this year from the Packers. In exchange, Green Bay got the 13th overall selection, a second-rounder, a sixth-rounder and a conditional 2024 second-round pick that could become a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65% of New York’s plays this season. Rodgers spent his first 18 seasons in Green Bay.
NFL – NFL, other leagues balancing betting revenue, game integrity
The NFL and other sports leagues spent many years staying as far away as they could from sports betting because they said it was necessary to protect the integrity of their games. Those entities now have a much different challenge. The biggest professional sports leagues today have high revenue-producing partnerships with sports betting companies that they want to maintain. The NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, NHL and others as well as broadcasters NBCUniversal and Fox have announced the formation of the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising.

Three batters fouled off a total of nine pitches from left-handed starter Eric Lauer (3-2) before the homer by Carpenter, who had been 0-for-12. Detroit added the decisive run with two outs. Eric Haase kept the inning alive with a ground ball single that third baseman Owen Miller put a glove on but couldn’t scoop. That allowed Spencer Torkelson to bat. He singled in Javier Báez, who had doubled. Milwaukee started the 8th with a leadoff double, but then Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and William Contreras struck out. Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs in four innings.
Blue Jays 7, White Sox 0 – Jansen homers twice, Jays hand White Sox 6th straight loss
José Berríos struck out a season-high nine over seven innings, Danny Jansen homered twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox 7-0, extending Chicago’s losing streak to six. Berríos allowed four hits — all singles — and walked one in his second straight seven-inning outing. Nate Pearson and Anthony Bass finished with hitless relief as the Blue Jays won for the 14th time in 20 games. Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run triple and George Springer had three hits for Toronto.
Cubs 6, Padres 0 – Justin Steele, Yan Gomes help Cubs blank Padres 6-0
Justin Steele pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning in his fourth straight win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 6-0. Yan Gomes had four of Chicago’s seven hits, including a two-run drive off Blake Snell in the second. Gomes is batting .441 with four homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games. Taking the mound on a chilly night at Wrigley Field, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. San Diego, which had won four of five, finished with five hits. It went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

MLB – Chicago Cubs place OF Cody Bellinger on the paternity list
The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the paternity list. Bellinger and his girlfriend welcomed their second child on Sunday, a baby girl. The 27-year-old Bellinger is off to a strong start in his first year with Chicago, batting .300 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 21 games. The 2019 NL MVP finalized a $17.5 million, one-year contract with the Cubs in December. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A Iowa. He was in the starting lineup for the opener of a three-game series against San Diego.

NBA – Hawks playoff win pushes Janet Jackson concert back 1 day
The Atlanta Hawks are still alive in the playoffs and that will force fans planning to attend Janet Jackson’s concert in the city this week to wait a day to see the music star. The Hawks rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 119-117 in Game 5 of their playoff matchup on Tuesday night, sending the series back to Atlanta for Game 6. It means that State Farm Arena is double-booked for Thursday night. Live Nation says the casualty will be Jackson’s concert, which will be postponed until Friday.

NFL – Bears assistant GM mum on whether team would draft Carter
Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham raved about Jalen Carter’s talent but revealed little when it comes to whether the team would feel comfortable taking a chance in the draft on the Georgia defensive tackle. Cunningham says there’s “no denying” his talent. The Bears have the No. 9 overall pick and no shortage of weaknesses to address after finishing with a league-worst 3-14 record in their first season under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. They could use another blocker to protect quarterback Justin Fields. They also need an edge rusher after registering a league-low 20 sacks as well as a disruptive force inside.
NFL – Young? Stroud? Panthers reach consensus on No. 1 draft pick
Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have reached an agreement on which quarterback the team will take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t say who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons. Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision maker’s judgement.
NFL – Jets GM: Getting Rodgers is ‘historic’ trade for franchise
The Jets’ deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers is a franchise-altering move that brings the four-time NFL MVP to a team that has the league’s longest postseason drought at 12 years. General manager Joe Douglas called it an “honor” to have a player of Rodgers’ caliber to want to play for the franchise and credited the culture coach Robert Saleh has cultivated during his two-plus seasons with the team. Douglas said there are still details that need to be finalized before the deal is completed. But Douglas said it is a "historic trade for this franchise.”
NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner says he will explore transfer options
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner says he will enter his name in the transfer portal, but did not rule out remaining with the Fighting Irish. Buchner posted on Twitter that he loves Notre Dame, but decided to explore other options after competing with Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman for the starting job. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman did not name a starter after spring practice. Hartman arrived earlier this year with three seasons of starting experience and 110 career touchdown passes. Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starter, but injured his shoulder in Week 2. He returned to lead the Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina.
US Soccer – British executive Crocker hired as USSF sporting director
British soccer executive Matt Crocker has been hired as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation. He will lead the search for the American men’s national team coach. That position has been uncertain since Gregg Berhalter was pushed aside during an investigation that developed from a feud with the Reyna family. Crocker will start Aug. 2, but begin the search for a coach immediately. The 48-year-old most recently was the director of football operations for Southampton.

Tigers 4, Brewers 2 – Maton hits 3-run homer, Boyd gets win as Tigers beat Brewers
Nick Maton had a three-run homer and Matthew Boyd pitched effectively for five innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night. Boyd allowed two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out eight and walking one as the Brewers lost consecutive games for the first time this season. José Cisnero, Tyler Holton and Jason Foley each tossed a scoreless inning and Alex Lange finished with a perfect ninth for his second save in three chances. Detroit made it 4-2 in the fifth when Eric Haase doubled, advanced on a ground out, and then slid home ahead of the tag on a bouncer to second.
Blue Jays 5, White Sox 2 – Bassitt wins but leaves with sore back, Jays beat White Sox
Chris Bassitt pitched 6 1/3 innings before leaving because of a sore lower back, Cavan Biggio hit a three-run home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. Toronto has won 13 of 19. Bassitt (3-2) allowed two runs and three hits to win back-to-back starts for the first time with the Blue Jays. He called manager John Schneider and the trainer to the mound in the seventh after bouncing his first pitch to Luis Robert Jr.

NBA/NCAAMBB – NBA draft includes Emoni Bates after 2 seasons in college
Emoni Bates is entering the NBA draft, banking on teams in the league being intrigued with his potential as a scorer after two years in college basketball. Bates made the announcement Monday on social media. The 6-foot-10 wing averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 30 games at Eastern Michigan last season. He made 40.5% of his shots overall and 33% of 3-point attempts for the Eagles. After graduating from high school in three years and being regarded as a basketball prodigy, Bates went to Memphis for one season and averaged 9.7 points. In 2019 as a high school freshman, the slender and skilled guard led Ypsilanti Lincoln to a state title and was named Michigan’s Division 1 Player of the Year by The Associated Press. His sophomore season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic and he attended Ypsi Prep Academy as a junior, his final year of high school. Bates initially committed to playing for Tom Izzo at Michigan State. He later de-committed and signed with Memphis and coach Penny Hardaway.
NFL – AP source: Jets agree on deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers is leaving behind his brilliant legacy in Green Bay and heading to the bright lights and massive expectations of the Big Apple. The New York Jets agreed on a deal to acquire the four-time NFL MVP from the Packers, according to a person with knowledge of the trade who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the teams have not officially announced the deal. The Jets will also receive the No. 15 overall pick and a fifth-rounder this year from the Packers, according to another person with knowledge of the trade. In exchange, Green Bay will get the 13th overall selection, a second-rounder, a sixth-rounder and a conditional 2024 second-round pick.
NFL – NFL draft back to being all about QBs at the top
Quarterbacks are back on top in the NFL draft. A year after the first 19 picks were non-QBs and Kenny Pickett was the only signal-caller selected in the first round, this draft class is loaded with potential franchise players. Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud have been the center of attention since before last year’s draft even took place. They could become the ninth pair of QBs selected 1-2 in the Super Bowl era. Anthony Richardson and Will Levis should make it four QBs in the top 15, which has happened only five times previously. If they all go in the top 10, it’ll be the second time ever. Then there’s Hendon Hooker, who may end up being a late first-round pick despite his age and knee injury.
NFL – Analysis: NFL players aware of risks of betting on football
NFL players aren’t permitted to bet on football despite the league embracing gambling and capitalizing on a multibillion-dollar industry through partnerships with casinos and sportsbooks. That’s one policy that can never change because it would destroy the sport’s credibility. Everyone knows the rules. It’s part of mandatory annual education and training sessions for rookies and all players, staff and officials. It’s also included in player manuals, and there are signs in every locker room reminding players and staff that no personnel may bet on NFL games.
ESPN announces layoffs as part of cost cutting by Disney
ESPN began informing employees of layoffs Monday, which are job cuts that are taking place throughout its corporate owner, the Walt Disney Company. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in February that the company would reduce 7,000 jobs either through not filling positions or layoffs. ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro said in a company memo sent to employees that those affected will hear from their supervisor or human relations department this week. ESPN was not part of the first phase of Disney reductions last month. Another round of cuts will take place by June. Both phases impact off-air employees.

Orioles 2, Tigers 1 – F/10 – Orioles beat Tigers 2-1 in 10, run winning streak to 6
Adam Frazier dashed home on Mason Englert’s wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Baltimore Orioles their sixth straight victory, 2-1 over the Detroit Tigers. The Orioles won for the 10th time in 12 games, this time on a day when Detroit’s Eduardo Rodriguez retired the first 20 Baltimore hitters. The Tigers left 13 men on base, including three in the 10th after Orioles manager Brandon Hyde issued two intentional walks. Those allowed left-hander Keegan Akin (1-1) to face lefty hitters, and end the threat, and Englert was unable to do the same in the bottom half. Frazier pinch-ran as the automatic runner and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Englert’s first pitch to Jorge Mateo skipped away.
Rays 4, White Sox 1 – Rays get 13th consecutive home win, beat White Sox 4-1
Zach Eflin pitched five effective innings in his return from injury and the Tampa Bay Rays hit two more home runs, beating the slumping Chicago White Sox 4-1 for their 13th consecutive home win to begin the season. Tampa Bay improved to 19-3 overall and tied the 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers for the second-longest home winning streak to start a season since 1901. The 1907 New York Giants opened with 15 straight wins at home. Luke Raley and Harold Ramirez went deep for the Rays, who have homered in each of their first 22 games — extending their major league record. Eflin allowed one run and three hits in a game that took only 2 hours, 2 minutes. Peter Fairbanks got his third save.
Dodgers 7, Cubs 3 – Mookie Betts homers, drives in 4 as Dodgers beat Cubs 7-3
Mookie Betts homered and drove in four runs in his first career start at shortstop, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3. Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez also connected as Los Angeles took three of four in the series at Wrigley Field. Clayton Kershaw pitched six innings of three-hit ball in career win No. 201. Betts, a six-time Gold Glove winner in right field who made his big league debut in 2014, hit a tying two-run shot off Marcus Stroman in the third inning. He also lined a two-run double to left in the ninth.

NCAAFB – Clock will no longer stop on first downs
The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved rules changes that are expected to reduce the number of plays in football games. The most notable is one that will keep the clock running when a team makes a first down except in the last two minutes of a half. The new clock rule affects only Divisions I and II. Penalties accepted at the end of the first and third quarters will now be enforced at the start of the following quarter and back-to-back timeouts during the same dead-ball period are no longer allowed.
NASCAR – Busch wins under caution at Talladega in double overtime
Kyle Busch won his second race of the season since joining Richard Childress Racing when he snatched the victory in double overtime at Talladega Superspeedway. It was the second win for Busch at Talladega, 15 years apart. He won when Bubba Wallace was spun by Ryan Blaney as Wallace tried to block Blaney. It triggered a race-ending caution that gave RCR its 13th victory at NASCAR’s biggest track. Blaney finished second to lead a parade of Ford drivers to second through fifth-place finishes.

Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 – James Outman hits grand slam as Dodgers beat Cubs 6-2
James Outman hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the ninth inning for his second homer of the game, and the Los Angeles Dodgers cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 6-2 victory. Max Muncy also homered for the banged-up Dodgers, who had dropped three of four. David Peralta and Miguel Vargas each had two hits. It was the first career grand slam and multihomer game for the 25-year-old Outman. The rookie outfielder also threw out a runner at the plate. Chicago had won a season-high four straight. Cody Bellinger homered against his former team for the second time this season, but Michael Fulmer struggled with his location in the ninth.

MLB – White Sox’s Hendriks says he’s in remission from lymphoma
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks says he is in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks announced Thursday on Instagram that he is cancer-free. Hendriks announced his diagnosis in January and completed his final round of chemotherapy two weeks ago. A three-time All-Star, Hendriks was third in the majors with 37 saves and made his third All-Star team last season. He led the American League with a career-high 38 saves in 2021, after leaving Oakland to sign a $54 million, three-year contract with the White Sox.
MLB – Cubs place RHP Jameson Taillon on IL with groin injury
The Chicago Cubs have placed right-hander Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list because of a left groin strain. Right-hander Javier Assad has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Assad is slated to start the opener of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cubs manager David Ross says Taillon got hurt while playing catch on Wednesday on flat ground in Oakland.

NBA – Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon wins NBA’s 6th man of year award
The Boston Celtics asked Malcolm Brogdon to learn a new role. He mastered it quickly. Brogdon was honored Thursday night as the NBA’s sixth man of the year, after a season in which he came off the bench exclusively and helped the Celtics finish with the second-best record in the NBA. It’s the second major individual award of Brogdon’s career: He was rookie of the year in 2016-17. Brogdon beat out fellow finalists Immanuel Quickley of New York and Bobby Portis of Milwaukee.
NFL – NFL draft gives improving Lions a chance to add to momentum
The Detroit Lions are going into the NFL draft set up to build upon the relative success they had last season, finishing with a surge that gave them a winning record for the first time since 2017. Quarterback Jared Goff says there is an overwhelming feeling of optimism and excitement for what the team thinks it can do. Detroit is heading into draft week with the No. 6 and No. 18 picks overall, a pair of second-round slots and five more selections to give general manager Brad Holmes plenty of options in his third draft with the franchise.
NFL – Bears have options at No. 9 going into NFL draft
The Chicago Bears already used the draft to address their glaring need for a playmaking receiver. They still have big holes to fill. The Bears need better protection for quarterback Justin Fields and help on the defensive line, starting with the No. 9 overall pick. General manager Ryan Poles already made one huge splash when he traded the No. 1 overall selection to Carolina for receiver DJ Moore and moved down eight spots. There are a number of ways Poles could go at No. 9. Things could get interesting if Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter is available, given his off-field issues. If they opt for an offensive lineman, Ohio State’s Paris Johnson Jr., Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski, Georgia’s Broderick Jones and Tennessee’s Darnell Wright are possibilities.
NFL – Colts hoping to find new franchise quarterback in NFL draft
Shane Steichen understands his first draft as an NFL head coach could define his entire tenure. Finding the best young quarterback to build around could quickly turn things around for the Indianapolis Colts. Miss and the Colts could be searching for answers for years. With Indy holding the fourth overall pick and conventional wisdom suggesting Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud will both be off the board after the first two selections April 27, the Colts may need to trade up one spot to No. 3 to get the next-best guy left on their draft board.
Golf – PGA – Chien leads Chevron after 1st round, Korda tied for 2nd
Peiyun Chien shot a 5-under 67 on a rainy Thursday in the transplanted Chevron Championship to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s first major of the year. Unable to find a sponsor willing to add to the half-century run at Mission Hills, the tournament bolted the California desert for the woods of suburban Houston. The 32-year-old Chien, who is from Taiwan, had six birdies — including four in a five-hole span on Nos. 4-8 — at The Club at Carlton Woods. Second-ranked Nelly Korda was among six players and three Americans tied for second at 68. Korda is fully healthy after missing four months and a lot of momentum last year with a blood clot in her arm that required surgery.
House approves trans athlete ban for girls and women’s teams
Transgender athletes whose biological sex assigned at birth was male would be barred from competing on girls or women’s sports teams at federally supported schools and colleges under legislation pushed through by House Republicans on Thursday. It’s the latest sign of the newly empowered GOP checking off a high-profile item on their social agenda. The legislation is unlikely to advance further because the Democratic-led Senate will not support it and the White House said President Joe Biden would veto it. Supporters say their effort is designed to protect fair competition in sports. Democrats criticized the push as targeting a vulnerable group of young people for political gain.
IndyCar – IndyCar’s Dixon still upset with O’Ward about race day crash
IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon and Pato O’Ward are not yet on speaking terms. Four days after they tangled in Long Beach, they arrived for an Indianapolis 500 test session without talking to each other. The dispute began after O’Ward dove inside Dixon heading into the eighth turn at Long Beach. When their tires touched, Dixon went nose first into the tire barrier and wound up dropping out of the race 17 laps later. Dixon contends it’s a move O’Ward shouldn’t have made. O’Ward calls it racing.

Guardians 3, Tigers 2 – José Ramírez’s home run leads Guardians past Tigers 3-2
José Ramírez bounced back from one of the worst games of his career with a three-run homer in the sixth inning as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. Paul Quantrill pitched six shutout innings Wednesday before leaving after a line drive hit him on the leg. He allowed four hits and a walk, striking out four. Three Cleveland relievers followed, with Emmanuel Clase pitching the ninth for his sixth save. With the game scoreless after five innings, Steven Kwan walked to start the sixth and moved up on Andres Gimenez’s base hit. Ramírez followed with a long homer down the right-field line.
Phillies 5, White Sox 2 – Turner, Marsh hit homers, Phillies beat White Sox 5-2
Trea Turner homered and had three hits, Brandon Marsh also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. Taijuan Walker pitched into the seventh inning. Turner hit his first home run for the Phillies with a solo shot in the first. The two-time All-Star singled and scored in the third and capped a two-run fourth with an RBI double against Tanner Banks. Walker gave up two runs and five hits in 61/3 innings. José Alvarado pitched the ninth for his second save in three chances. Chicago’s Mike Clevinger lasted just three innings, allowing three runs and six hits on 75 pitches. Andrew Vaughn hit a two-run homer in the first.
Cubs 12, A’s 2 – Cubs hammer A’s bullpen in 12-2 win for 3-game sweep
Dansby Swanson scored the tiebreaking run standing up on an infield grounder to spark a four-run sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs reached Oakland’s bullpen for 10 runs in a 12-2 victory over the Athletics that completed a three-game sweep. The A’s have lost seven straight and at 3-16 are mired in their poorest 19-game start since the 1951 Philadelphia A’s. Eric Hosmer hit his first home run since last July 29 for San Diego, Patrick Wisdom had a two-run triple. Mason Miller, a 24-year-old right-hander who is Oakland’s top pitching prospect, made his major league debut.

MLB – Oakland A’s purchase land for new stadium in Las Vegas
The Oakland Athletics have signed a binding agreement to purchase land for a new retractable roof ballpark in Las Vegas after being unable to build a new venue in the Bay Area. Team president Dave Kaval said Wednesday night that the team finalized the deal to buy the 49-acre site last week where the A’s will plan to build the stadium that will seat between 30,000 and 35,000 fans close to the Las Vegas Strip. The A’s will work with Nevada and Clark County on a public-private partnership to fund the stadium. Kaval said the A’s hope to break ground on the stadium by next year and would look to hope to be able move into their new home by 2027.

NBA – Dumars: Decision to suspend Draymond Green was ‘difficult’
NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars says it was a difficult decision to suspend Golden State’s Draymond Green for Game 3 of the Warriors’ first-round series against Sacramento. Dumars also says it was made with serious consideration of many factors. Dumars oversees the league’s basketball operations and sanctions for on-court incidents. Green stepped on the chest of Kings center Domantas Sabonis midway during the fourth quarter of Game 2 of that series on Monday night. Green was ejected for the play. The league escalated the punishment on Tuesday night.
NBA – Sacramento’s Mike Brown unanimous Coach of the Year winner
Sacramento’s Mike Brown is the unanimous winner of the NBA’s Coach of the Year award. It was an easy call after his first season in Sacramento saw the Kings make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. All 100 voters from a panel of reporters and broadcasters had Brown atop their ballot Wednesday. Brown won the award for the second time, adding this trophy to the one he got after he and LeBron James led Cleveland to a 66-16 record in the 2008-09 season. The other finalists were Oklahoma City’s Mark Daigneault and Boston’s Joe Mazzulla.
Golf – PGA – Tiger Woods has ankle surgery, rest of majors in doubt
Tiger Woods is recovering from another surgery. Woods has posted on Twitter that he had fusion surgery on his right ankle to alleviate arthritis from a broken bone. Most estimates on recovery are eight to 12 weeks. That would put into doubt whether he plays in the three remaining majors. Woods had a noticeable limp when he played in the Masters. He made the cut for a record-tying 23rd time. But he withdrew Sunday morning during the third round because of plantar fasciitis. The broken bone in his ankle stems from the February 2021 car crash in Los Angeles.
Texas cheerleaders shot after one says she got in wrong car
Authorities say a man shot and wounded two cheerleaders in a Texas supermarket parking lot after one of them said she mistakenly got into his car thinking it was her own. The shooting early Tuesday east of Austin was the latest in a string of recent U.S. shootings apparently sparked by someone showing up at the wrong place. Heather Roth says she got into what she thought was her car, but there was a man in the passenger seat so she got back into her teammate’s car. She says the man then approached her teammate’s car and opened fire. She was grazed and her teammate was critically wounded. The man fled but was later arrested.

Two-time United States women’s hockey Olympian Megan Bozek is retiring. The 32-year-old defender from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, won silver medals at the 2014 Sochi and 2022 Beijing Winter Games. Bozek also won four gold medals in six world championship tournament appearances, ending with a silver-medal finish in 2022. Bozek made her national team debut in 2007 in the Under-18 Series, and finished her career with 17 goals and 41 assists for 58 points in 111 games.

Brandon Marsh had Philadelphia’s only hit, an opposite-field double to left on reliever Aaron Bummer’s first pitch of the eighth inning. Giolito was pulled after throwing 102 pitches in six innings. He struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter. Reynaldo Lopez set down the last four batters, striking out three, to earn his third save. NFL – Damar Hamlin cleared to play, 4 months after cardiac arrest
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin took to the podium and declared he’s ready to resume his football career some four months after going into cardiac arrest and having to be resuscitated on the field during a game. Hamlin says his “heart is still in the game," and adds that what happened on the field in Cincinnati isn’t the end of his story. He spoke after participating in the team’s voluntary workout program on Tuesday. Bills general manager Brandon Beane says Hamlin was cleared to play after meeting with a third and final specialist on Friday. The second-year player from the Pittsburgh area collapsed on the field after making what appeared to be a routine tackle in a Jan. 2 game against the Bengals.

NBA – Warriors’ Green suspended for stepping on Kings’ Sabonis
Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended for one game without pay for stepping on the chest of Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis and will miss Game 3 of the Warriors’ first-round playoff series against the Kings on Thursday night. The NBA made the announcement two days before the series shifts to the defending champions’ home court at Chase Center. The NBA made the announcement of a decision by executive vice president and head of basketball operations Joe Dumars.
NBA – Warriors in rare territory, trail Kings 2-0 in NBA playoffs
The Golden State Warriors had gone 27 consecutive playoff series during the Stephen Curry era without falling behind 2-0. Steve Kerr hadn’t seen it, either, since he began coaching the team in 2014-15. Now, the defending NBA champions will need a mighty comeback and now without emotional leader Draymond Green. Green stomped on Domantas Sabonis during the fourth quarter of Monday night’s 114-106 defeat at Golden 1 Center and was penalized by the NBA with one-game suspension without pay. Game 3 against the Sacramento Kings is on Thursday in San Francisco.
NCAAMBB – Edey declares for NBA draft with option to return to school
National player of the year Zach Edey of Purdue has declared for the NBA, but will keep open the option of returning to school next season. The 7-foot-4 center led Purdue to a Big Ten regular-season title this past season by averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.5 assists per game. He was a unanimous first team All-American and swept all of the national player of the year awards. It’s the second straight year a Purdue player has declared early for the draft. Jaden Ivey was a lottery pick in 2022 and was selected by the Detroit Pistons. It’s unclear where Edey will be projected to go in June’s draft.
Boxing – Claressa Shields sees name and image at Little Caesars Arena
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and women’s world middleweight champion Claressa Shields was on the verge of tears when saw her name and image on the videoboards at Little Caesars Arena, where she will fight Hanna Gabriels of Costa Rica. The home of the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings will have boxing for the first time since it opened in 2017 on June 3. Shields is the main attraction on a card that includes up-and-coming fighters from Michigan. Since Thomas Hearns retired in 2006, no one in boxing has been a big enough name to draw large crowds in Detroit.
FIFA – US to play CONCACAF Gold Cup in Chicago, St Louis, Charlotte

The Americans will meet Curaçao, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana or Sint Maarten four days later at St. Louis, then finish Group A against Nicaragua on July 2 at Charlotte, North Carolina. Quarterfinals will be on July 8 at Arlington, Texas, and the following day at Cincinnati. The semifinals will be July 12 at San Diego and Las Vegas, though CONCACAF will not specify venues for each semifinal until after the group stage.

Guardians at Tigers, PPD to 4/18 – Another Tigers’ game postponed, DH vs Guardians on Tuesday
The game between the Cleveland Guardians and the Tigers scheduled for Monday night was postponed because of cold temperatures and high winds in the forecast a day after Detroit’s game against San Francisco was scrubbed. The Tigers announced that the Guardians game was postponed “out of an abundance of caution for player safety and fan comfort” and would be played as part of a straight doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 1:10 p.m. Monday’s announcement came about four hours before the scheduled first pitch, a day after the Tigers waited more than five hours to postpone their game with the Giants following light rain.

He has five homers during a four-game streak and eight homers on the season, tied for the big league lead. Ian Happ added three RBIs and Cody Bellinger had a career-high five hits as the Cubs won for the eighth time in 11 games.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal was not yet final. Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon sweep for Kenya, but not favorite Kipchoge

Hellen Obiri won the women’s race in 2:21:38 to complete the Kenyan sweep. She is a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the 5,000 meters.
