Light rain quickly stopped, but the fans were told at 2 p.m. that the game would not start until 3. Head Coach Ben Simon, assistants Matt MacDonald, Todd Krygier and goaltending coach Brian Mahoney-Wilson. NBA – Kings probe ‘racial bias’ claims after rapper E-40 ejected
The Sacramento Kings are investigating allegations from a Bay Area hip-hop star that “racial bias” led to him being kicked out of his seat during a playoff game against the Golden State Warriors. The rapper E-40 said in a statement that he was heckled throughout the game and that he addressed one heckler “in an assertive but polite manner” before security guards came and ordered him to leave the arena. E-40, whose real name is Earl Stevens, is Black. He says his heckler was white. The Kings say they are investigating the circumstances behind his ejection.
Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon poses new challenge for Kipchoge: slow down
World record-holder Eliud Kipchoge has the speed to outclass the rest of the field when he makes his Boston Marathon debut. To win, he may have to slow things down. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and 12-time major marathon champion knows that the 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston’s Back Bay isn’t like those flat and friendly courses where he established himself as perhaps the greatest distance runner of all time. No matter, he says. Breaking the tape is what’s important. Regardless of how long it takes. Kipchoge set the world record of 2 hours, 1 minute, 9 seconds in Berlin in 2019. Boston has always rewarded smart tactics more than pure speed.

Javier Báez was benched after a baserunning gaffe and Spencer Turnbull pitched five solid innings as the Detroit Tigers avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1. Zach McKinstry drove in the go-ahead run and Jake Rogers had two hits and an RBI as Detroit snapped a six-game skid. Turnbull allowed one run on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch removed Báez from the game in the third, one inning after Báez appeared to lose track of the outs and ran into a double play. Chris Bassitt took the loss for the Blue Jays, allowing two runs in six innings.

MLB – Tigers’ Báez removed from game after baserunning gaffe
Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Báez was removed from Thursday’s game against the Blue Jays forgetting how many outs there were and running into a double play. Facing Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt, Báez doubled off the left-field wall with one out in the second inning. It was Báez’s first extra-base hit of the season, but he didn’t run hard out of the box, apparently thinking he had homered. Báez broke for third and rounded the base on Akil Baddo’s liner to center, and was easily doubled off to end the inning.

Lightning 5, Red Wings 0 – Point gets 50th, 51st goals, Lightning beat Red Wings 5-0
Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. It was the regular-season finale for both teams. Point joined Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier as the only Lightnning players to reach the 50-goal mark. Alex Killorn, Brandon Hagel and Michael Eyssimont also scored for the playoff-bound Lightning. The Red Wings, despite ending the season 0-4-1, finished with their most points since their last playoff team in 2015-16.
Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3 – OT – Toews, Blackhawks lose 5-4 to Flyers in finale
Jonathan Toews scored in his final game with the Chicago Blackhawks, but Ivan Provorov scored 3:09 into overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 victory in the season finale for each team. Toews won three Stanley Cup titles in 15 seasons with Chicago, but general manager Kyle Davidson announced earlier in the day that the team would not re-sign its longtime captain. Toews turns 35 on April 29, and the lowly Blackhawks are rebuilding. Toews had a chance to win the game in overtime, but he was denied by Felix Sandstrom on a breakaway with about 2:15 remaining. Provorov then closed it out for Philadelphia, beating Alex Stalock for his 6th goal of the season.
NHL – Blackhawks say Toews will not return to team next season
Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will not return to the team next year, ending a wildly successful run that included three Stanley Cup championships in 15 seasons. General manager Kyle Davidson says the team will not re-sign its longtime center, who turns 35 on April 29. Toews was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft. He was just 20 years old when he became the 34th captain in team history in July 2008. Toews could decide to retire after missing a chunk of this season with what he described as symptoms of long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome.

NBA – The losing is done, NBA teams now await 7-foot-3 Wembanyama
There are very specific rules that NBA teams must follow right now when it comes to mentioning the name of 7-foot-3 French star Victor Wembanyama. He’s got big-man height and elite guard skills and will be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. But because he isn’t officially in the draft yet, teams can’t discuss him publicly. So they don’t. And they don’t have to, either. Everyone knows what the teams who’ll be in the NBA lottery next month are hoping to have happen. They want the No. 1 pick and the right to select Wembanyama. The Detroit Pistons have the best odds to win the number one pick.
NFL – AP sources: Snyder agrees to $6.05B sale of NFL’s Commanders
Two people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press that a group led by Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales and including Magic Johnson has an agreement in principle to buy the Washington Commanders from longtime owner Dan Snyder. Harris and Rales are set to pay $6.05 billion for the storied NFL franchise. It’s the most money a professional sports franchise in North American has been sold for, topping the $4.65 billion paid by Walmart heir Rob Walton’s group for the Denver Broncos last year. The sale of the Commanders is pending approval from the rest of the league’s owners. That could happen as soon as their next meeting in Minnesota in May.
NFL – First QB helmet designed to help reduce concussions approved
The first quarterback-specific helmet designed to help reduce concussions has been approved for use by the NFL and NFLPA, the AP has learned. The helmet, manufactured by Vicis, reduces severity of helmet-to-ground impacts, which league data says account for approximately half of quarterback concussions, including the one suffered by Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa last season when his head slammed violently against the turf during a Thursday night game against Cincinnati. The helmet performed 7% better than the most popular helmet worn by quarterbacks last season, the league said in a memo sent to team executives on Thursday.
Golf – PGA – Hovland leads RBC Heritage; Masters champ Rahm struggles
Viktor Hovland shot a 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the rain-delayed RBC Heritage. Masters champion Jon Rahm was eight shots back after a frustrating 1-over 72 and acknowledged the fatigue from his win at Augusta National affected him. Hovland also shared the first-round lead at the Masters and finished tied for seventh. He led Brian Harman by one shot at Harbour Town. Aaron Rai and Jimmy Walker were also 6 under but did not finish their rounds before darkness halted play. The RBC Heritage is a designated event on the PGA Tour this year, giving it a $20 million purse and a strong field.
Boston Marathon – Survival diaries: Decade on, Boston Marathon bombing echoes
In the decade since the Boston Marathon bombing, the streets and sidewalks have been repaired, and memorials stand at the site of the explosions to remember the three who died. But the healing continues. And, for many, the race itself is an important part. Bombing survivors with no previous interest in distance running made it a bucket-list goal. For others, friends and family entered on their behalf. Doctors and first responders and others affected by the attacks on April 15, 2013, have also been drawn back to the race on the Massachusetts holiday of Patriots’ Day. The 127th Boston Marathon is Monday.

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3 – 10 Innings – Blue Jays rally in 9th, beat Tigers in 10 on Springer’s hit
George Springer singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied past Detroit 4-3, handing the Tigers their sixth consecutive defeat. Toronto erased a two-run deficit in the ninth on sacrifice flies by Whit Merrifield and pinch-hitter Alejandro Kirk after reliever Trey Wingenter loaded the bases. Springer’s single up the middle off José Cisnero scored automatic runner Danny Jansen, who advanced from second to third on Kevin Kiermaier’s sacrifice bunt. Kevin Gausman struck out 11 in eight innings for the Blue Jays, who have won seven of eight. Detroit took a 3-1 lead on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the seventh. Nick Maton also homered for the Tigers.
Twins 3, White Sox 1 – Gray, Twins take series with 3-1 win vs. White Sox
Sonny Gray threw five scoreless innings in a third strong start to open the season for the Minnesota Twins. He outdueled Lucas Giolito to beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1. The Twins won their third series out of four behind another sharp performance from a rotation that ranks second in the majors in ERA. Gray is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA. Giolito gave up one run in six innings and dropped to 0-1. Gray pitched through an upper respiratory virus. Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer was hit in the face by a pitch from Giolito and is scheduled for oral surgery.
Mariners 5, Cubs 2 – Kelenic’s 482-foot homer helps Mariners beat Cubs 5-2
Logan Gilbert pitched 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, Teoscar Hernández and Jarred Kelenic hit consecutive home runs in the eighth and the Seattle Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-2. Kelenic’s homer landed in the upper center field bleachers and traveled 482 feet, the second-longest at Wrigley Field since Statcast began tracking in 2015 and trailing only Willson Contreras’ 491-footer in Game 4 of the 2017 NL Championship Series. Chicago had beaten Seattle seven consecutive times dating to July 31, 2016.

All-Star outfielder Ian Happ and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a $61 million, three-year contract covering 2024-26. Happ agreed in January to a $10.85 million, one-year contract. His new deal calls for a $3 million signing bonus payable June 1 and salaries of $20 million in both 2024 and 2025, and $18 million in 2026. He gets a full no-trade provision and a hotel suite on road trips. The 28-year-old would have been eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series. Happ is hitting .282 with one home run and six RBIs.
MLB – MLB teams extend beer sales after pitch clock shortens games
Thanks to the pitch clock, the action is moving much faster at Major League Baseball games. It also means a little less time for fans to enjoy a frosty adult beverage. To combat that time crunch, at least four teams — the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers — have extended alcohol sales through the eighth inning this season. Teams historically have stopped selling alcohol after the seventh. MLB games have been considerably shorter this season, largely thanks to a series of rule changes. Through the first 1 1/2 weeks of the season, the average game time was down 31 minutes, on track to be the sport’s lowest since 1984.

NBA – Shout it out: DeRozan’s daughter goes viral in play-in game
Diar DeRozan wanted to skip a day of school. Her father grudgingly went along with the plan. Turns out, the decision was worth shouting about. The 9-year-old daughter of Chicago guard DeMar DeRozan stole the show at the play-in tournament on Wednesday night. Her shrieks from the stands went viral, and quite possibly played in a role in helping the Bulls defeat the Toronto Raptors 109-105 in an Eastern Conference elimination game. Her ear-splitting shouts would come when the Raptors — her dad’s former team — were shooting free throws, and they were loud enough to even become a conversation point during the ESPN broadcast of the game. The Raptors finished 18 of 36 from the line in their season-ending loss.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said “a bunch of guys” in college basketball are putting their names in the NBA draft. Izzo said Wednesday a few Spartans may join the trend, declaring themselves eligible to at least be evaluated for the draft with an opportunity to withdrawal from it in June. If all three of the Spartans’ standout guards return, Izzo will have a talented and experienced team that will get a boost from a top recruiting classes that includes a pair of McDonald’s All-America selections.

A person familiar with the deal says the Detroit Lions are trading cornerback Jeff Okudah to the Atlanta Falcons for a fifth-round draft pick. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. Detroit drafted the former Ohio State star with the No. 3 overall pick in 2020 and injuries stunted his career. Hamstring and shoulder ailments limited him to nine games as a rookie and he had a season-ending Achilles tendon injury one game into his second season. Okudah stayed healthy and started in 15 games last season.

That’s according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a deal was still being finalized. An announcement is expected by the conference by the end of the week. Petitti replaces Kevin Warren, who is leaving to become president of the Chicago Bears. Petitti continues a trend of recent hires to lead the top conferences coming from outside college sports — like Warren, who came from the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

NBA – Play-in tournament starts Tuesday, giving 8 teams new life
Getting to the play-in tournament probably wasn’t the goal of any team when training camps opened back in September. But it beats the alternative. There are 12 teams with playoff spots right now, 10 teams whose seasons are over and eight teams with a second chance. The play-in tournament starts Tuesday, with Atlanta going to Miami and Minnesota visiting the Los Angeles Lakers. The winners of those games will be going to the postseason. Oklahoma City goes to New Orleans and Chicago visits Toronto on Wednesday for elimination games. The winners there move on to face the loser of Tuesday’s games in another win-or-go-home contest.

Detroit closed its fourth straight season and 12th in 14 years without a postseason appearance on Sunday with a lopsided loss at Chicago. After finishing an NBA-worst 17-65, Dwane Casey announced he was stepping down with one year left on his coaching contract to accept a role in the Troy Weaver-led front office. Casey was hired by the Pistons in 2018 as the reigning NBA Coach of the Year led them to the playoffs in his first season with the franchise.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 3 – Adam Duvall’s 3-run HR lifts Red Sox to 6-3 win over Tigers
Adam Duvall hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the sixth inning and the Boston Red Sox went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-out RBI single in the third inning of his final home opener to put Detroit up 3-1. The Red Sox scored a run in the third and fourth before surging into the lead with a four-run sixth. Boston was swept at home earlier in the week by Pittsburgh. Chris Sale gave up three runs and four hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings. Detroit catcher Jake Rogers fired up fans — bundled up on a chilly afternoon — by turning on an inside pitch and sending it 414 feet to left to put Detroit up 2-0 in the second. The Tigers, though, missed many chances to score more runs by leaving eight runners on base.
Giants 16, White Sox 6 – Homer-happy Giants slug 5 more, pound White Sox 16-6
J.D. Davis hit a grand slam in the ninth off mop-up reliever Hanser Alberto for his third hit, Michael Conforto cracked a three-run homer among three hits and the San Francisco Giants powered past the Chicago White Sox 16-6 on Thursday. Mike Yastrzemski and Wilmer Flores each launched a two-run shot in San Francisco’s five-homer, 20-hit attack. Rookie catcher Blake Sabol tagged the first home run of his career and added two singles to give him four total hits in his first six games. Tim Anderson had two RBIs for Chicago.

Henri Jokiharju, Zemgus Girgensons and Jordan Greenway also scored for the Sabres, and Devon Levi made 26 saves. Alex Tuch and Jack Quinn scored in the shootout. Austin Czarnik, Dylan Larkin, Alex Chiasson, Simon Edvinsson, Jonatan Berggren and David Perron scored in regulation for the Red Wings. Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal for Detroit.

Quinnipiac 5, Michigan 2 – Quinnipiac beats Michigan in Frozen Four to reach title game
Jacob Quillan had a two-goal game for the second time during the NCAA Tournament, Yaniv Perets posted 29 saves and Quinnipiac beat Michigan 5-2 in the Frozen Four. Quinnipiac, which set a program record for wins, advances to its third national title game in program history against Minnesota on Saturday. The Bobcats seek their first title after losing in 2013 and ’16. Both of Quillan’s goals came in the first period. He opened the scoring with 14:41 left on a bank shot from behind the net that went off goaltender Erik Portillo. Quillan added another on a breakaway at 8:39 for his 18th goal of the season. Michigan was seeking its 10th NCAA championship.
Golf – The Masters – Koepka living large at Masters, leads with Rahm and Hovland
Brooks Koepka is in a three-way share of the lead at the Masters with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland. Koepka is trying to regain his reputation as a major player. Right now he gets attention as a surprise defector to Saudi-based LIV Golf. All he cares about his having healthy legs. He opened with a 65. Rahm was even more spectacular in his round of 65. That’s because he four-putted for double bogey on the first hole. He followed with seven birdies and an eagle. Hovland played bogey-free. Tiger Woods limped his way to a 74 and was nine back.
Golf – The Masters – Tiger Woods’ painful Masters walk results in opening 74
Tiger Woods had three birdies and five bogeys during an opening round of 74 at the Masters on Thursday, leaving him in contention to play the weekend but hardly to win the tournament. He had two tough lip-outs on the front nine, a couple of poor pitch shots that led to bogeys, and some bad luck at the 18th led to his final bogey. It was the worst opening round for Woods at the Masters since 2005, when he followed another 74 with 65-66-71 to capture the fourth of his five green jackets. But he’s hardly the same player these days. He is now a combined 16 over for his last four rounds at Augusta National.
NCAAWBKB – Champion LSU women accepting Biden invitation to White House
LSU’s national champion women’s basketball team will accept an invitation from President Joe Biden to visit the White House. University spokesman Michael Bonnette confirmed LSU’s intentions on the matter on Thursday, a day after Tigers star forward Angel Reese suggested during a podcast interview that her team should celebrate their title with former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama rather than President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. Reese made the suggestion after saying she was not inclined to accept an apology from Jill Biden for suggesting that both LSU and runner-up Iowa be invited to the White House. President Biden did not follow through on that idea, inviting only LSU and men’s national champion Connecticut.
US would bar full ban on trans athletes but allow exceptions
A new rule proposed by the Biden administration would prevent schools and colleges from enacting outright bans on transgender athletes, but it would allow certain exceptions to promote fairness or reduce injuries. The proposal sends a political counterpunch toward a wave of Republican-led states that have sought to ban trans athletes from competing in school sports. If finalized, it would become enshrined as a provision of Title IX, the landmark gender equity legislation enacted in 1972. It must undergo a lengthy approval process, however, and it’s almost certain to face challenges from opponents.

Chas McCormick, Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Peña all homered and combined for six RBIs to help the Houston Astros snap a three-game skid with an 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. McCormick hit a two-run home run in the second off Eduardo Rodriguez and doubled in the fourth. Tucker homered for a second straight game with his solo home run in the fourth to help the Astros to avoid a three-game sweep. Peña, last year’s World Series MVP, connected on a two-run shot off Tyler Alexander for his first home run of the season with two outs in the eighth to make it 8-2.
White Sox 7, Giants 3 – Cease gets 1st win, Anderson tossed as White Sox beat Giants
Dylan Cease went five innings in his first win, Tim Anderson got ejected and the Chicago White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 7-3. Luis Robert Jr. had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for Chicago. Gavin Sheets added three RBIs. Cease kept the Giants in check despite some control issues after they smacked seven homers in Monday’s 12-3 romp. The AL Cy Young Award runner-up walked 5, struck out 8. The only hit and run he allowed was a solo homer to J.D. Davis in the 2nd.

Wednesday’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park was postponed due to rain and rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Friday, Sept. 1. MLB – White Sox star Anderson ejected, alleges quick-pitch
Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson was ejected from Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants after appearing to claim he was quick-pitched by Logan Webb. With a 1-2 count in the third inning, Anderson was in the batter’s box but not settled into his stance when Webb began his delivery with 11 seconds left on the pitch clock. Anderson stepped out and was already walking toward the home dugout when Webb threw strike three down the middle. It was unclear if Anderson tried to call timeout. Plate umpire D.J. Reyburn called Anderson out on strikes, and Anderson then turned back toward Reyburn to argue.
MLB – White Sox slugger Jiménez sidelined by strained hamstring
The Chicago White Sox say slugger Eloy Jiménez will miss two to three weeks because of a strained left hamstring. The team placed Jiménez on the 10-day injured list Wednesday and recalled infielder Jake Burger from Triple-A Charlotte. Jiménez sustained a low-grade strain running from first to third Monday on Andrew Vaughn’s RBI double in the seventh inning of a 12-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The 26-year-old Jiménez is 4 for 19 in five games. He had 31 homers as a rookie in 2019 but has had injuries in other seasons.
MLB – White Sox closer Hendriks completes final round of chemo
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks says he has completed his final round of chemotherapy. He has non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He has posted an Instagram video of him ringing the “victory bell” along with a lengthy note thanking his medical team, wife, family, friends and fans. He says the past five months “have been both the quickest and slowest of my life.” Hendriks announced the diagnosis in January. He said in a video shown Monday prior to the White Sox’s home opener against the San Francisco Giants that he was beginning his final round of chemo.

Former Pistons guard Spencer Dinwiddie shot 1 for 10 from the floor but matched his career high with 16 assists for the Nets (44-36), who won for the fourth time in five games. NFL – Marvin Jones back to play for an improved Detroit Lions team
Marvin Jones moved his wife and five children from Miami to San Diego and planned to sign with an NFL team on the West Coast. The receiver said Wednesday he could not resist an opportunity to play in Detroit again for a franchise that suddenly has a favorable impression around the league. The Lions found the veteran receiver it wanted to fill the void left when DJ Chark signed with the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago in free agency. Jones has 542 catches for 7,386 yards and 58 touchdowns in his career.
Golf – The Masters – LIV and let live: Masters still about who wins green jacket
Masters chairman Fred Ridley is hopeful of a Masters just like any other. Ridley says the interaction with LIV players at the champions dinner made it feel like everything was normal in the golf world. But it’s been all the chatter for the last 10 months. The Masters gets underway on Thursday. Tiger Woods is playing. Phil Mickelson is back in the field. Bad weather is in the forecast. Ridley believes the Masters is above it all. He says every player in the field wants the same thing. And that’s to be wearing a green jacket on Sunday afternoon.
NCAAWBKB – LSU’s Reese on White House flap: ‘We’ll go to the Obamas’
First lady Jill Biden’s walk-back of her suggestion that runner-up Iowa should join NCAA women’s basketball champion LSU for a visit to the White House doesn’t sit well with Angel Reese. The Tigers star said on The Paper Route Podcast the Tigers should celebrate their title with Barack and Michelle Obama rather than with President Joe Biden and his wife. Jill Biden attended Sunday’s 102-85 LSU victory. She said Monday that as part of the longstanding tradition of having champions visit the White House, the Hawkeyes should come as well because they played such a good game.
