NCAAFB – Power vs. speed: Michigan, TCU present unfamiliar challenges
No. 2 Michigan brings its smash-mouth ways into the College Football Playoff semifinal to face No. 3 TCU on Saturday. It’s tempting to boil down the Fiesta Bowl matchup to Big Ten power vs. Big 12 speed on each side of the ball, especially when the Wolverines’ offense is on the field. Both sides think that’s an oversimplification. While Michigan’s heavy personnel packages and towering offensive line isn’t what TCU is used to facing, the same can be said for the Wolverines going up against a Horned Frogs’ defense that regularly lines up with five defensive backs.

NFL – Cardinals’ J.J. Watt indicates he’ll retire at end of season
Even though he’s still playing great football, it looks as if J.J. Watt is ready to call it a career. The three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year indicated Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the season, posting pictures of his wife and family on social media while writing: “Koa’s first ever NFL game. My last ever NFL home game. My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure.” Watt and his wife, Kealia, became parents in October. Koa is the name of their son. The 33-year-old Watt was among the premier defensive players in the NFL during the early 2010s with the Houston Texans.

Notre Dame 59, Jacksonville 43 – Notre Dame beats Jacksonville, snaps 3-game losing streak
Marcus Hammond scored 15 points, Dane Goodwin added 12 points and Notre Dame beat Jacksonville 59-43 to snap a three-game losing streak. Notre Dame won a game with less than 60 points scored for the first time since Jan. 3, 2018. The Irish only had 21 points in the first half but scored 22 in the opening 10 minutes of the second. Notre Dame went ahead by double digits for the first time with 6:11 left in the second half. J.J. Starling and Cormac Ryan, two of Notre Dame’s top-three scorers, each went 0 for 5 from the field in the first half. Ryan started 0 for 7 until scoring at the 12:49 mark of the second half, but the three-point play came during a 15-2 run as Notre Dame built a 45-36 lead.

Chargers 20, Colts 3 – Chargers reach playoffs, beat Foles, overmatched Colts 20-3
Austin Ekeler scored on two 1-yard runs and the Los Angeles Chargers clinched their first playoff berth since 2018, intercepting Indianapolis quarterback Nick Foles three times to beat the overmatched Colts 20-3. Justin Herbert threw for 235 yards and Cameron Dicker made two short field goals for the Chargers, who won their third straight after getting the help they needed this weekend from Las Vegas, Miami, New England and the New York Jets. Los Angeles won on the road on a Monday night for the first time in more than a decade. Indianapolis lost its fifth straight under interim coach Jeff Saturday.
NFL – Campbell: Lions will learn from loss, be ready for Bears
The Detroit Lions could have gained the advantage for an NFC wild-card playoff berth with a victory last weekend. They instead got run over by the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, 37-23. Detroit coach Dan Campbell doesn’t necessarily look at it as a bad thing. He’s trying to spin the outcome into a positive. The good news for the Lions is that most of the other contenders for the final two wild-card spots also lost over the weekend. Detroit plays its final home game against Chicago on Sunday, then heads to Green Bay for the regular-season finale.
NFL – Eberflus: Bears won’t consider sitting Fields rest of season
Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus insists the team won’t shut down quarterback Justin Fields for the remaining two games. Fields was hobbling at the end of Saturday’s 35-13 loss to the Buffalo Bills after someone stepped on his foot. His nonthrowing, left shoulder also bothered him during the game. That’s the same one he separated last month. But Eberflus said Monday sitting him the rest of the way is “absolutely not” a consideration because the Bears need to improve. The Bears matched the 1978 and 2002 teams for the franchise record with their eighth straight loss.
NFL – Another QB change for Colts produces same futile results
The Indianapolis Colts tried their third starting quarterback of the season Monday night. It didn’t make a difference. Indy’s struggling offense produced just one field goal and no third-down conversions. Nick Foles threw three interceptions and was sacked seven times. For the Colts, this kind of futility has been the norm regardless of whether Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger or Foles was behind center. And with only two games remaining in this season of futility, the Colts seem to be out of options.
NFL – Broncos fire rookie head coach Hackett after 4-11 start
The Denver Broncos have fired coach Nathaniel Hackett after 15 games. Hackett never was able to get quarterback Russell Wilson out of a season-long slump. The Broncos are 4-11 and have posted their sixth straight losing season and are missing the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season. Hackett replaced Vic Fangio last January but the Broncos got worse in almost every category under the first-time head coach. Players were told during a team meeting Monday that senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg will serve as interim head coach.

It was 24-19 after a field goal, a safety off of a blocked punt and Camden Orth’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Broden with 6:27 left. NFL – Bills try to clinch AFC East against Bears, eye No. 1 seed
The Buffalo Bills can clinch their third straight AFC East title when they meet the Bears in frigid Chicago on Saturday. And a No. 1 seed playoff seed is in sight. The Bills clinched their fourth straight playoff berth with last week’s win over Miami and would lock up the division with a win or tie against Chicago. A loss or tie by the Dolphins against Green Bay would also do it. Buffalo has the inside track toward the top seed in the AFC. Saturday’s game won’t be easy with the National Weather Service predicting a high of 10 degrees with gusting wind.
NFL – Lions at 7-7, Panthers at 5-9 are fighting for playoff spots
Jared Goff has the surging Detroit Lions in contention for a wild card spot. Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers still have plenty to play for as well, despite a 5-9 record. The teams clash in Charlotte on Saturday in a game that will impact NFC playoff scenarios. The Lions have won six of their last seven games and are just a half-game behind Washington in the race for the final wild card spot. The Panthers are coming off a home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but still control their playoff destiny. If they win out, they’ll win the NFC South title and host a playoff game in January.

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is questionable for Saturday’s game against the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills because of a ring finger injury. Johnson was limited in practice on Thursday after being a full participant the previous day. The NFL was seeking $2.5 billion per season for the package, which has been on DirecTV since 1994. Oluwatimi didn’t expect to become the first Michigan player to win the Outland Trophy, which recognizes the top interior lineman on either side of the ball. Ishbia played on Michigan State’s 2000 national championship basketball team. He’s now in line to buy a majority stake in the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury for $4 billion.

NFL – Bears not necessarily scheming for Fields to break record
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says he hopes Justin Fields breaks the NFL single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback. Getsy says the Bears won’t take Fields out of a game if he’s closing in on the record. But he also says the team won’t scheme for Fields to reach the mark. Fields has 1,000 yards rushing and has emerged as one of the NFL’s most exciting players. He needs 207 more yards to break Lamar Jackson’s mark from 2019, an average of 69 per game. The Bears started calling more runs for Fields after he struggled early in the season.

NFL – Franco Harris, Steeler who caught Immaculate Reception, dies
Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris has died at the age of 72 just days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception.” His catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers is considered the most iconic play in NFL history. Harris ran for 12,120 yards and won four Super Bowl rings with Pittsburgh in the 1970s. The team’s dynasty began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972. His catch and run off a deflected pass gave the Steelers their first-ever playoff win. Harris’ son, Dok, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his father died overnight. No cause of death was given.
MLB – Cubs, All-Star SS Swanson finalize $177 million, 7-year deal
All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson has joined the Chicago Cubs, finalizing a $177 million, seven-year contract. The addition of Swanson is the biggest of three major moves by the Cubs since the end of the season. Right-hander Jameson Taillon signed a $68 million, four-year contract, and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger got a $17.5 million, one-year deal. The 28-year-old Swanson is coming off perhaps his best big league season, hitting .277 with 25 homers and a career-best 96 RBIs in 162 games for Atlanta.

New York had six previous captains in the Steinbrenner family era: Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles, Willie Randolph, Ron Guidry, Don Mattingly and Jeter. Judge homered in his first big league at-bat for the Yankees in 2016, and the 6-foot-7 outfielder has become a larger-than-life figure in the Bronx.

Doctors say Pelé’s health has worsened during his hospital stay to regulate his cancer medication. The hospital says in a statement that Pelé’s cancer has advanced and that he is under “elevated care” related to “kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.” One of his daughters says the 82-year-old Brazilian soccer great will remain at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo for Christmas. Pelé is undergoing chemotherapy in his fight against cancer since he had a colon tumor removed in September 2021. Neither his family nor the hospital have said whether it had spread to other organs. Pelé led Brazil to victory the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups.

Since making his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2015, he is 31-29 with a 4.10 ERA. MLB – Bellinger looking forward to fresh start after joining Cubs
Cody Bellinger is looking forward to a fresh start with the Chicago Cubs and showing that he can once again be a productive hitter. He went from winning the NL MVP with the Dodgers in 2019 to being cut by Los Angeles in November. The years in between were marked by injuries and plummeting production. Bellinger says he will “be able to learn from” his experience. The Cubs hope he can experience a bit of a resurgence at the plate while giving them an elite glove in center field as they try to climb back toward contention. They finished third in the NL Central at 74-88. It was their second straight losing season after making the playoffs five of the previous six years, but they went 40-31 in their final 71 games.
FIFA – More than 25 million watched World Cup final in U.S.
Argentina’s dramatic World Cup final victory over France is the second most-watched soccer match of any kind in the United States. That’s according to early numbers from Nielsen, Fox and Telemundo. Sunday’s match had an English- and Spanish-language combined audience of 25,783,000. That trails the 2015 Women’s World Cup final that was watched by 26.7 million when the United States beat Japan 5-2. That match aired in prime time in most of the U.S. Fox’s numbers from Sunday should increase when the “match-only” rating is released later Tuesday.
Golf – Masters – Masters to keep criteria, invite all eligible players in ’23
The Masters is keeping its criteria the same for next year. That means 16 players from Saudi-funded LIV Golf will be at Augusta National to compete for a green jacket. Club chairman Fred Ridley says he’s disappointed in the fractured nature of golf. But he says the focus of the Masters is to bring the top players together from around the world. The 16 players from LIV Golf include six former champions and six who qualify by being in the top 50 in the world ranking. Ridley said the club still reserves the right to alter its criteria for 2024.

Lions 20, Jets 17 – Goff stuns Jets late as Lions hold on for 20-17 victory
Jared Goff threw a go-ahead 51-yard touchdown pass to Brock Wright on fourth-and-inches with 1:49 remaining and the Detroit Lions held on for a 20-17 victory over Zach Wilson and the New York Jets. Wilson and the Jets had one more chance to tie or win in his return as the starting quarterback. Wilson completed a 20-yard throw to Elijah Moore for a first down and Robert Saleh called a timeout with 1 second remaining. The Jets sent out Greg Zuerlein for a potential tying 58-yard field goal but his kick was wide left to send the Lions to their third straight win. Kalif Raymond scored on a 47 punt return touchdown in the first quarter for Detroit, who have won 6 of their last 7 games.
Eagles 25, Bears 20 – Hurts runs for 3 TDs as Eagles squeeze by Bears 25-20
Jalen Hurts tied a career high by running for three touchdowns and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the struggling Chicago Bears 25-20. The Eagles, with the best record in the NFL, made just enough plays to come away with a tighter-than-anticipated win. Hurts ran for 61 yards and threw for 315 yards with two interceptions. Chicago’s Justin Fields rushed for 95 yards to reach exactly 1,000 on the season, joining Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson as the only quarterbacks to rush for 1,000 or more. He also set a franchise single-season rushing record for a QB. But the Bears lost their seventh straight game.
