MLB commissioner Manfred says 2023 ‘big year’ for A’s future
The Oakland Athletics will have their relocation fee waived if they decide to move to Las Vegas, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says 2023 is a big year when it comes to the future of the franchise. Speaking at baseball’s winter meetings in San Diego, Manfred also said the Los Angeles Angels are hoping to have their sale resolved by opening day. He had no update on the sale process for the Washington Nationals. The A’s have played at the Coliseum since 1968 and their lease expires after the 2024 season.

MLB – Longtime Free Press writer Lowe wins BBWAA excellence award
John Lowe, who created the quality start statistic while covering baseball for the Detroit Free Press and other newspapers for more than three decades, has won the BBWAA Career Excellence Award. The honor was announced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Lowe got 137 votes from BBWAA members. The late Gerry Fraley was second with 135 and Bruce Jenkins drew 106. Lowe will be honored during Hall of Fame induction weekend next July in Cooperstown, New York. In 1985, Lowe created the quality start stat, which has since become part of the baseball landscape — six innings pitched, no more than three earned runs allowed. Lowe retired in 2014 after 29 years with the Free Press following previous stints with the Los Angeles Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

NFL – Injury-plagued LA Rams claim QB Baker Mayfield off waivers
The Los Angeles Rams have claimed quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers. The Rams made the move Tuesday to add Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft by Cleveland. Mayfield was released by the Panthers on Monday at his request after seven disappointing games with Carolina. The Rams need quarterback help. Matthew Stafford is almost certainly out for the season with a bruised spinal cord, and backups John Wolford and Bryce Perkins have been fairly ineffective while playing three of the past four games.
NCAAFB – Hall of Famer Croom: ‘Not enough progress’ for Black coaches
New Hall of Famer Sylvester Croom says there has not been enough progress in college football when it comes to the hiring of Black head coaches. Croom, a star player for Alabama in the early 1970s, became the first Black head football coach in the Southeastern Conference in 2004 when he was hired by Mississippi State. Since then, there have been only four others and there are currently no Black head coaches in the SEC. Only one of 16 head coaching vacancies in major college football this year has been filled by a Black coach. Croom called it ‘disappointing’ and ‘frustrating,’ but said he was happy to see Deion Sanders get an opportunity with Colorado.

Mills Lane, the Hall of Fame boxing referee who was the third man in the ring when Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear, died Tuesday. He was 85. Morocco 0, Spain 0 – MOR PK’s 3-0 – Morocco beats Spain on penalties to advance at World Cup
Morocco became the first Arab nation and only the fourth African nation to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals by beating Spain 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets missed their penalties for Spain. Sarabia hit the post and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stopped the other two. The teams drew 0-0 in regulation and extra time. Morocco has been the biggest surprise of the tournament and will next face either Portugal or Switzerland. Morocco and Spain are close neighbors with a complex geopolitical relationship.
Portugal 6, Switzerland 1 – Ronaldo dropped, Ramos scores 3 for Portugal at World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement scored a hat trick to lead Portugal over Switzerland 6-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals. Goncalo Ramos is a 21-year-old forward who only made his Portugal debut last month. He made his first start for his country by demonstrating the kind of clinical finishing Ronaldo was once known for. Ramos scored the opening goal in the 17th minute and added the others in the 51st and 67th. By that time chants of “RONALDO! RONALDO!” were swirling around the 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium. Ronaldo entered as a substitute in the 72nd.

FIFA – The next World Cup will jump to 48 teams. Is bigger better?
The next World Cup will be the biggest ever after world soccer body FIFA took the leap from a 32-team field to 48 teams in 2026. It means more of soccer’s so-called “little teams” that didn’t make it to Qatar will be given a chance-of-a-lifetime when the World Cup goes to the United States, Canada and Mexico. Great news for everyone who was entertained by Saudi Arabia’s stirring underdog upset of Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Morocco knocking out Spain. More surprises surely await in four years. Only it’s not clear for some that bigger is better at the World Cup.
FIFA – Moroccans celebrate historic World Cup win against Spain
Exuberant Moroccans have poured into the streets of their capital and in cities across Europe to celebrate their national soccer team’s historic win against Spain at the World Cup. Morocco defeated Spain in a penalty shootout in Qatar, making the Atlas Lions the only team from outside Europe or South America to make it to the last eight. The capital, Rabat, was bursting with joy while Morocco fans also celebrated in the streets in France and Spain.
FIFA – Ronaldo a solitary figure after being benched at World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t start Portugal’s game against Switzerland in the round of 16 of the World Cup. The move came a day after his coach expressed frustration about Ronaldo’s attitude in the last match. Gonçalo Ramos started in Ronaldo’s place at Lusail Stadium. Ronaldo showed obvious displeasure at being removed from the game against South Korea on Friday. That led to Ramos getting the start. The 21-year-old made his international debut three weeks ago, then scored a hat trick in his first career start for Portugal, which came in the World Cup as Ronaldo’s replacement. Portugal beat Switzerland 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

MLB – AP source: Verlander agrees to 2-year contract with Mets
A person familiar with the negotiations says Justin Verlander has agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. The deal reunites the AL Cy Young Award winner with Max Scherzer and gives the Mets a high-profile replacement for Jacob deGrom. The deal includes a vesting third-year option, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement. Verlander leaves World Series champion Houston to step in for deGrom, who agreed to a $185 million, five-year contract with Texas last week. It also puts Verlander on the same team as Scherzer after they played together with the Tigers from 2010-14. Verlander turns 40 in February.
MLB – Judge looms; Verlander, Turner deals heat up winter meetings
Justin Verlander is going to the New York Mets. Trea Turner has agreed to a blockbuster deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Baseball’s first winter meetings since 2019 kicked into high gear when Verlander agreed to an $86.7 million, two-year deal with New York, and Turner joined Philadelphia for a $300 million, 11-year contract. Clayton Kershaw also returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a $20 million, one-year deal. The biggest outstanding question at the end of an impactful day at a downtown San Diego hotel centered on the status of MVP Aaron Judge, who remains a free agent after setting the AL home run record and powering the Yankees to a division title.

FIFA has brought disciplinary charges against Serbia for alleged misconduct by players and fans including offensive chants at a World Cup game against Switzerland. Tensions flared in the stands and on the field during Switzerland’s 3-2 win on Friday. It was a rematch of their stormy game at the 2018 World Cup that revived ethnic Balkan rivalries. FIFA on Monday didn’t specify which incidents at Stadium 974 led to charges relating to “misconduct of players and officials,” discrimination and “misconduct of players and officials.” FIFA gave no timetable for the disciplinary case.
FIFA – Uruguay players charged for confronting World Cup referee
Four Uruguay players have been charged with offensive behavior by FIFA for their angry pursuit of the referee after being eliminated from the World Cup. FIFA says the Uruguayan soccer federation also faces an extra charge of discrimination. The Uruguay team thought it should have been awarded a penalty kick in stoppage time of its 2-0 victory over Ghana on Friday. One more goal would have seen Uruguay advance. FIFA says Edinson Cavani, José María Giménez, Diego Godín and Fernando Muslera face disciplinary cases for “offensive behavior and violations of the principles of fair play” and misconduct.

Jamaal Williams ran for his 14th touchdown to help the Detroit Lions get off to a strong start and they didn’t slow down in a 40-14 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The Lions scored on all five of their drives in the first half to take a 17-point lead, and their first three possessions of the second half to pull away. The Jaguars had a scare on the last play of the second quarter when quarterback Trevor Lawrence was sacked and grabbed his left knee, but their defense made his return moot.
Packers 28, Bears 19 – Rodgers, Packers rally in 4th quarter to beat Bears 28-19
Aaron Rodgers led three fourth-quarter scoring drives and the Green Bay Packers rallied to beat the Chicago Bears 28-19. Rodgers improved to 25-5 against the Bears, including playoffs. Chicago has lost six straight. Fields ran for a 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter and finished with 71 yards on six attempts. Dallas led 21-19 entering the fourth when Dak Prescott threw the last of his three touchdown passes. Hooker’s scoop-and-score was the first of four fourth-quarter takeaways by Dallas, all of which led to touchdowns. The Cowboys had their highest-scoring quarter since at least 1991. It was just the third time in NFL history a team scored as many as 33 points in the fourth. Matt Ryan threw three interceptions and lost a fumble for the Colts.

FIFA – American soccer success in men’s World Cup remains a dream
American men’s soccer success on the world stage remains a dream. The U.S. men’s team looked better in this year’s World Cup, but the results were the same as in 2010 and 2014 _ elimination in the round of 16 following a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands. Draws against Wales and England were followed by a 1-0 win over Iran that assured a spot in the knockout rounds, and the U.S. achieved the minimum to avoid being branded a failure. Going home after the group stage would have been a disappointment given the expectations for the team coach Gregg Berhalter rebuilt.

NFL – Fields takes big step toward return when Bears host Packers
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields appears poised to return against the Green Bay Packers after missing a game because of an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder. Fields took a big step toward playing by practicing Thursday without limitations after missing last week’s loss at the New York Jets. The Bears will try to stop a five-game losing streak and get a rare win over their rivals when they host the Packers on Sunday. Green Bay has won seven in a row against Chicago. Fields separated his left shoulder and suffered some ligament damage in the AC joint when he was tackled on a designed run late in Chicago’s loss at Atlanta two weeks ago. He participated in practice on a limited basis leading up to the game at New York and was limited again on Wednesday.

The team said its stadium maintenance crew addressed superficial damage to the turf.

NCAAFB – College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams in 2024 season
The College Football Playoff says it will expand to a 12-team event starting in 2024. The announcement came after the Rose Bowl agreed to amend its contract for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. That was the last hurdle CFP officials needed cleared to expand the four-team format. The expansion is expected to produce about $450 million in additional gross revenue for the conferences and schools that participate. The plan to expand the playoff was unveiled publicly in June 2021 and it took 18 months of haggling and delays to finally complete.

MHSAA – Niles football to open new field against St. Joseph
The Niles football team was expecting to play their first game on their new artificial turf field against Dowagiac earlier this year, but delays in installation of the turf caused the Vikings to play their entire season on the road. But Niles now knows that another rival will be the team they get to play to open their new turf field. Niles will host former SMAC rival St. Joseph on August 25, 2023. Niles and St. Joe have played exactly 100 times with the Bears leading 65-33-2. The series was paused in 2020 when the Vikings left the SMAC and joined the BCS conference before joining the Wolverine a year later. St. Joseph allowed Niles to play two of their home games at Steve Upton Field at Dickinson Stadium this fall because of the delays.

Morocco 2, Canada 1 – Morocco reaches last 16 of World Cup, beats Canada 2-1
Morocco has advanced to the last 16 at the World Cup for only the second time after clinging on for a 2-1 win over Canada. The Moroccans’ only other trip past the group stage came in 1986. Hakim Ziyech scored for Morocco in the fourth minute after a bad error from Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan left the winger to chip the ball into an empty goal. Youssef En-Nesyri added a second goal. Canada got one back through an own-goal by Nayef Aguerd but goes home after losing all three games.
Croatia 0, Belgium 0 – Belgium out of World Cup as Croatia advances with 0-0 draw
Croatia advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Belgium. Belgium’s group-stage exit will likely usher in the breakup of its talented but underachieving generation of players. The point left 2018 runner-up Croatia in second place behind Group F winner Morocco. The Croats have reached at least the semifinals on each of the two times they have advanced to the knockout stage. Belgium was eliminated after scoring only one goal in three games and failed to live up to its status as the second-ranked team and one of the tournament favorites.
Germany 4, Costa Rica 2 – Germany out of World Cup despite 4-2 win over Costa Rica
Germany was eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup for the second tournament in a row. The four-time champions beat Costa Rica 4-2 but it wasn’t enough to advance to the round of 16. Japan’s 2-1 victory over Spain allowed both of those teams to advance instead. The Japanese team finished at the top of the group. Germany also exited early while playing as defending champions at the last World Cup. Germany coach Hansi Flick says “I believe for the future of German football we need to do things differently in training.”
Japan 2, Spain 1 – Japan beats Spain 2-1 as both teams advance at World Cup
Japan scored twice early in the second half to come from behind to defeat Spain 2-1 in a result that put both teams into the last 16 of the World Cup. Ao Tanaka scored the winning goal from close range early in the second half. It took about two minutes for video review officials to confirm the ball hadn’t gone out of bounds before the goal. Álvaro Morata scored first for Spain in the 11th minute at Khalifa International Stadium. But Japan rallied after halftime. Ritsu Doan equalized in the 48th with a left-footed shot from outside the box. And Tanaka added the second one three minutes later. Germany was eliminated from the tournament even with a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the other Group E match. A victory by Costa Rica would have eliminated Spain.

MLB – Secure with 5-year deal, Clark pushes to make MLBPA stronger
Tony Clark has never had more clout as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association. The 50-year-old helped the union navigate a tumultuous stretch that included a pandemic-shortened 2020 season and a new labor deal in March that not only saved a full 162-game season but also was viewed as at least a modest win for the players and their pocketbooks. Now, there’s a relative calm during a baseball offseason that hasn’t been seen for a few years. Australia 1, Denmark 0 – Australia may have new Golden Generation at World Cup
Australia has advanced to the round of 16 at the World Cup by beating Denmark 1-0 on Mathew Leckie’s 60th-minute goal. It is Australia’s first time in the knockout stage since 2006. That was the only other time they advanced out of the group stage. Leckie took a pass just around the center circle and moved in and around a defender. He eventually hit a left-footed shot that beat Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Australia finished with 6 points in Group D.
Tunisia 1, France 0 – France loses to Tunisia 1-0 but still wins World Cup group
Defending champion France won its World Cup group despite losing to Tunisia 1-0. Wahbi Khazri scored in the 58th minute to give the Tunisians the victory but it wasn’t enough to get them into the round of 16. Australia beat Denmark 1-0 in other Group D game and finished second on goal difference. Khazri ran at the heart of the French defense and beat two players before poking the ball into the bottom corner. It was Tunisia’s third victory at a World Cup. France forward Antoine Griezmann thought he had evened the score in the eighth minute of stoppage time but he was ruled offside following a video review.
Argentina 2, Poland 0 – Messi and Argentina advance at World Cup, beat Poland 2-0
Lionel Messi will grace the World Cup stage at least one more time. The Argentina great had a penalty saved but his team still beat Poland 2-0 after second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez and advanced to the last 16. Argentina finished in first place in Group C to set up a match against surprise qualifier Australia. Poland also advanced despite the loss. Argentina has bounced back from opening the World Cup with a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. Messi’s likely final World Cup rolls onto Saturday. He will be relieved after failing to score a penalty for the second straight World Cup.
Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 1 – Mexico beats Saudi Arabia 2-1 but falls short at World Cup
Henry Martin and Luis Chaves scored a goal each in Mexico’s furious attempt to stay alive at the World Cup but the 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia was not enough. Argentina beat Poland 2-0 in a simultaneous match so Mexico was eliminated from the group stage for the first time since 1978. Mexico had reached the round of 16 at the last seven World Cups. That was tied with Brazil for the longest current streak. El Tri went into the match at Lusail Stadium needing a victory and help from Poland to advance in Group C. Argentina’s victory meant goal difference came into play and Mexico missed out.

FIFA – World Cup win increases prize money for American men, women
The U.S. women’s team will make at least three times more from the men’s World Cup than they received for winning the 2019 women’s tournament. That’s thanks to a new deal to split World Cup earnings. A 1-0 win by the men over Iran on Tuesday night increased their World Cup prize money to approximately $380,000 for each player in the squad. The same applies to players on the U.S. roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup because of the new collective bargaining agreements between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the men’s and women’s unions.
FIFA – Pulisic listed as day-to-day with pelvic injury at World Cup
U.S. forward Christian Pulisic is day to day after sustaining a pelvic injury during his team’s 1-0 World Cup win against Iran that sent the Americans to the round of 16 of the tournament. Pulisic scored the 38th-minute winning goal against Iran, but crashed into Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand during the same play. The Chelsea striker was substituted at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for tests. U.S. Soccer later posted a video showing Pulisic celebrating with his teammates at the team’s hotel.

Senegal 2, Ecuador 1 – Koulibaly’s goal puts Senegal into round of 16 at World Cup
Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly put his team into the last 16 of the World Cup by volleying home the winner in a 2-1 victory over Ecuador. Koulibaly scored three minutes after Moises Caicedo had evened the score at 1-1. Senegal took the lead after a first-half penalty by Ismaila Sarr. Caicedo scored his goal in the 67th. Senegal finished second while Ecuador and Qatar were eliminated.
Netherlands 2, Qatar 0 – Netherlands beats host Qatar 2-0 to advance at World Cup
The Netherlands finished off the worst showing by any World Cup host nation by beating Qatar 2-0. Cody Gakpo put the Netherlands ahead midway through the first half with his third goal in as many matches and Frenkie de Jong doubled the advantage five minutes into the second half. The Netherlands is a three-time runner-up at the World Cup and also finished third in 2014. Qatar was making its tournament debut.

FIFA – Croatia charged after fans taunt Canadian World Cup player
A disciplinary case has been opened against Croatia at the World Cup after the team’s fans taunted a Canada player with Serbian family ties. FIFA says the charge against the Croatian soccer federation was “due to the behavior of its fans.” It cited rules relating to discrimination and security at games. Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan was born in an ethnic Serbian region of Croatia that was part of the conflict that split the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. He moved as a child with his family to Canada and chose to represent that country.

Steelers 24, Colts 17 – Snell runs for go-ahead TD, Steelers hold off Colts 24-17
Benny Snell Jr.’s 2-yard touchdown run with 9:55 left gave Pittsburgh the lead and the Steelers fended off a last-minute comeback bid to beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-17. Snell had 12 carries for a season-high 62 yards after replacing the injured Najee Harris in the third quarter. Harris was ruled out at halftime with an abdominal injury. Pittsburgh improved to 4-7 and won its eighth straight over Indianapolis, which fell to 4-7-1. Matt Ryan drove the Colts in position for a tying score but Indy stalled in Pittsburgh territory and didn’t call its first timeout until a fourth-down play with 30 seconds left. Ryan threw incomplete and that was it.
NFL – Colts, Saturday mismanage clock at end of loss to Steelers
The Colts had the ball and drove into Steelers territory late while trailing by seven. But Indianapolis curiously allowed time to continue ticking off the clock, not using its first timeout until it faced a fourth down with 30 seconds left at the Pittsburgh 26-yard line. That play resulted in an incomplete pass and the Steelers held on to win 24-17. Interim coach Jeff Saturday says he didn’t feel as if his team was pressed for time and said they already had called plays they were confident would work. But the ticking clock put extra pressure on Indy and QB Matt Ryan.

The Big Ten has disciplined Michigan State and Michigan for their roles in stadium tunnel altercations that led to seven Spartans being charged with crimes. The conference announced Monday that it is fining Michigan State $100,000. And the Big Ten is suspending Spartans cornerback Khary Crump for the first eight games of next season. Crump is facing a felonious assault charge. The Big Ten is also reprimanding Michigan for not providing adequate protection for both teams as they left the playing surface.

Matt Rhule’s eight-year contract as Nebraska’s football coach is valued at $74 million. That will make him the third highest-paid coach in the Big Ten behind Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and among the top 10 nationally. Rhule was introduced Monday at the team’s indoor practice facility. He promised to bring back a physical style of play to Nebraska. Alberts also says programs need to pay a premium for coaches to compete in the Big Ten or Southeastern Conference.

McNamara can potentially play at another school for two seasons.
MLB – Free agent slugger José Abreu signs 3-year deal with Astros
José Abreu and the World Series champion Astros have agreed to a three-year contract, adding another powerful bat to Houston’s lineup. Abreu, the 2020 AL MVP, spent his first nine major league seasons with the Chicago White Sox. The first baseman became a free agent after batting .304 with 15 home runs and 75 RBIs this year. With the Astros, he replaces free agent Yuli Gurriel at first base in a batting order that also features All-Star sluggers Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. The 35-year-old Abreu becomes the biggest free agent to switch teams so far this offseason. The three-time All-Star and 2014 AL Rookie of the Year is a .292 career hitter in the majors with 243 homers and an .860 OPS.
AP source: Clevinger agrees to 1-year deal with White Sox
A person familiar with the agreement tells The Associated Press the Chicago White Sox bolstered their rotation by agreeing to a one-year contract with right-hander Mike Clevinger. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical. The 31-year-old Clevinger went 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA in 23 games, 22 starts, for San Diego this year. He missed the 2021 season after he had Tommy John surgery. Chicago is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season, when it went 81-81 and finished 11 games back of surprising AL Central champion Cleveland.

Cameroon staged an impressive comeback in a 3-3 draw against Serbia at the World Cup despite dropping its goalkeeper at the last minute. Andre Onana, who plays for Italian club Inter Milan, wasn’t in Cameroon’s lineup or even at the stadium to watch the Group G match. Coach Rigobert Song said he dropped his starting goalkeeper for “disciplinary reasons,” but didn’t give any specifics. Cameroon was down 3-1 but second-half substitute Vincent Aboubakar turned the game with a goal and an assist. Cameroon plays Brazil in its last group-stage match while Serbia faces Switzerland.
Ghana 3, South Korea 2 – Kudus scores 2, Ghana beats South Korea 3-2 at World Cup
Mohammed Kudus scored a pair of goals and Ghana staved off elimination at the World Cup with a 3-2 victory over South Korea. Mohammed Salisu also scored for the Black Stars. Ghana lost its opening match against Portugal and was in need of points for a chance to reach the knockout round in Qatar. Cho Geu-sung Cho scored both of South Korea’s goals about three minutes apart early in the second half to even the game at 2-2.
Brazil 1, Switzerland 0 – Brazil advances at World Cup with 1-0 win over Switzerland
Brazil overcame the absence of Neymar to beat Switzerland 1-0 and advance to the round of the 16 of the World Cup. Casemiro scored in the 83rd minute with a shot from inside the area to put Brazil in the last 16 with a match to spare in Group G. Brazil forward Neymar stayed at the team’s hotel treating a right ankle injury sustained in the opener in Qatar. The win gives Brazil six points from two matches. Switzerland has three. Serbia and Cameroon drew 3-3 earlier in the day and have one point each.
Portugal 2, Uruguay 0 – Portugal advances to last 16, beats Uruguay 2-0 at World Cup
Portugal became the third team to reach the round of 16 at the World Cup by beating Uruguay 2-0. Bruno Fernandes curled in a cross from the left that barely went over the head of Cristiano Ronaldo and bounced into the far corner of the net in the 54th minute. Ronaldo appeared to believe he had scored. It was awarded to Fernandes after repeated close-up replays. Fernandes added a stoppage-time penalty. Portugal becomes the 3rd team to reach the last 16 after France and Brazil. The match was briefly interrupted just before the goal by a protestor carrying a rainbow flag.

FIFA – US has clear World Cup task against Iran: win or go home
The task is clear for the United States: beat Iran in a politically charged World Cup match or go home. A draw or a loss Tuesday night would eliminate the Americans. During unusual pre-match news conferences, captain Tyler Adams was asked to defend the U.S.’s treatment of Black people and chastized for pronoucing the opponent “Eye-ran” instead of “E-ran.” American coach Gregg Berhalter was questioned about U.S. immigration and Naval policy and apologized for the U.S. Soccer Federation’s decision to strip the emblem of the Islamic Republic from Iran’s flag on social media.
FIFA – Protester with rainbow flag runs onto field at World Cup
A protester ran onto the field carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a blue Superman T-shirt that said “SAVE UKRAINE” on the front and “RESPECT FOR IRANIAN WOMAN” on the back during a World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay. Security officials chased the protester down and the flag was dropped on the field before the person was escorted off the field. The referee then picked up the flag and left it on the sideline. It stayed there for a few moments before a worker came and collected it. The protester was ushered away through a tunnel. It wasn’t immediately clear if the person faced any charges or had been detained by police.

Keysher Fuller scored in the 81st minute to lift Costa Rica to a 1-0 victory over Japan at the World Cup. The result leaves both teams with three points after two games in Group E. Fuller took advantage of a defensive error when Japan failed to clear the ball and hit the net from 18 yards with the ball going in off the fingertips of leaping Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda. Spain 1, Germany 1 – FT – Germany salvages 1-1 draw against Spain at World Cup
Germany forward Niclas Füllkrug salvaged a 1-1 draw against Spain at the World Cup. The Germans still need to win their last group match to have a chance of advancing to the knockout stage. The four-time champions were eliminated in the group stage four years ago in Russia. Álvaro Morata put Spain ahead in the 62nd minute and Füllkrug equalized in the 83rd. Germany will next face Costa Rica. The Costa Ricans defeated Japan 1-0 earlier in the day. Even a win may not be enough for the Germans. They are in last place in Group E and need the other result to go their way.

FIFA – US Soccer briefly scrubs emblem from Iran flag at World Cup
The U.S. Soccer Federation briefly displayed Iran’s national flag on social media without the emblem of the Islamic Republic. The federation described the move as a show of support for protesters in Iran ahead of the two nations’ World Cup match Tuesday. The federation says in a statement Sunday that it decided to forego the official flag on social media accounts to show “support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights.” The move comes as nationwide protests challenging Tehran’s theocratic government continue in Iran.
FIFA – Lalas: US overlooked importance to Iran of ’98 Cup match
Looking back to the United States’ infamous 1998 World Cup loss to Iran, Alexi Lalas thought the Americans failed to appreciate the emotional significance of their opponents. He says "this is a country and culture that we have a long history with — a lot of it is negative, let’s be honest.” Following draws against Wales and England, the U.S. needs a win to reach the knockout stage. The U.S. and Iran met at the 1998 tournament, 19 years after an Islamic Revolution. Iran referred to the U.S. as the “Great Satan” and Team Melli upset the Americans 2-1.
