Pistons 110, Nuggets 108 – Pistons snap seven-game skid with 110-108 win over Nuggets
Bojan Bogdanovic scored 22 points and the Detroit Pistons snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 110-108 win over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. The victory was the Pistons’ first on the road this season, as they had lost their previous 10. Detroit entered the night with a league-worst record of 3-15. Former University of Colorado standout Alec Burks finished with 21 points for the Pistons, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. After missing the past three games while in the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols, Denver center Nikola Jokic had 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, putting him just shy of his fourth triple-double of the season. Jokic’s playing status was uncertain in the hours leading up to tip-off.

NCAAFB – Revenge game: Ohio State tired of living with Michigan loss
Make no mistake, Ohio State is hungry for revenge against Michigan. This year’s version of The Game has huge conference and national championship implications, but at the heart of it the Buckeyes want to extract repayment from Michigan for last year’s game. The 42-27 win by the Wolverines in Ann Arbor snapped Ohio State’s streak of eight wins in the rivalry series and spoiled its hopes for another Big Ten title and berth in the College Football Playoff. Both No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan come into the The Game unbeaten for the first time since 2006.
NCAAFB – LSU, USC move up behind UGA, Ohio St, Michigan, TCU in CFP
LSU has moved up to fifth and Southern California is sixth in the College Football Playoff rankings behind Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU. The top four remained the same for the third straight week, but the teams chasing changed order after Tennessee lost to South Carolina last Saturday night. Two huge games this weekend could create more clarity. Michigan is at Ohio State and USC hosts Notre Dame, which checked in at 15th in the selection committee’s rankings.
NCAAFB – Jury: NCAA not to blame in ex-USC football player’s death
A Los Angeles jury has rejected a claim by the widow of a former USC football player who said the NCAA failed to protect him from repeated head trauma that led to his death. The jury found Tuesday that the NCAA was not negligent in the death of Matthew Gee. Lawyers for the widow of Gee, a linebacker on the 1990 Rose Bowl-winning squad, say he endured an estimated 6,000 hits as a college athlete. They say this caused permanent brain damage and led to cocaine and alcohol abuse, which eventually killed him at age 49. The NCAA said it had nothing to do with his death.
MLB – Verlander, Pujols voted Comeback Players of the Year
Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols have won baseball’s Comeback Player of the Year awards. Verlander, the American League recipient, returned from Tommy John surgery to lead Houston to its second World Series championship. He had the lowest ERA in the majors and was a unanimous winner of his third Cy Young Award — becoming the first player to earn the prize after not pitching in the previous season. Pujols, honored in the National League, came back to St. Louis for his final season and posted his biggest numbers in years at age 42. The three-time MVP compiled an .895 OPS for the NL Central champions and became the fourth major leaguer to reach 700 career home runs.
NCAAHKY – Michigan St hockey player alleges opponent used racial slur
Michigan State hockey player Jagger Joshua has alleged an opponent from Ohio State directed a racial slur at him during a game. Jagger, who is Black, shared his experience on social media from the Nov. 11 game. Jagger said an official heard what the opposing player said, and gave him a game misconduct penalty. The box score that day shows Ohio State senior forward Kamil Sadlocha was the only player given a game misconduct. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith says Sadlocha is away from the team and will not practice or compete.

Saudi Arabia 2, Argentina 1 – World Cup stunner: Saudi Arabia beats Messi’s Argentina 2-1
Saudi Arabia scored one of the biggest World Cup upsets ever by beating an Argentina team led by Lionel Messi 2-1. Messi’s quest to win the one major title to elude him got off to a shocking start and brought back memories of Cameroon’s 1-0 win over an Argentina team led by Diego Maradona in the opening game of the 1990 World Cup. Goals by Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari in a five-minute span in the second half gave the Saudis their greatest win. Messi stood with his hands on his hips near the center circle and looking stone-faced as Saudi Arabia’s jubilant players ran in all directions around him.
Mexico 0, Poland 0 – Draw – Mexico and Poland play out 0-0 draw at World Cup
Robert Lewandowski’s second-half penalty attempt was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and left Poland to settle for a 0-0 draw at the World Cup. Poland’s all-time leading scorer with 76 goals remains without one at the World Cup. The Poland forward was awarded the penalty following a VAR review after Hector Moreno got hold of his shirt and pulled him down. Ochoa came up yelling in celebration after his stop. Mexico dominated possession but Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny turned away all three of El Tri’s shots on goal.
Tunisia 0, Denmark 0 – Draw – Tunisia holds Denmark 0-0 as Arab teams impress at World Cup
Tunisia held European Championship semifinalist Denmark to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup. The result came three hours after Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in a shocking upset and before a stadium filled almost entirely with Tunisia supporters in another big result for Arab nations competing at the first World Cup in the Middle East. An expert save shortly before halftime by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel helped Denmark preserve the draw. The match marked Christian Eriksen’s return to a major tournament less than a year and a half after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.
France 4, Australia 1 – Giroud, Mbappe help France beat Australia 4-1 at World Cup
France showed it can cope without its star striker at the World Cup. Kylian Mbappe scored one and set up the second of Olivier Giroud’s two goals to help the defending champions beat Australia 4-1. Giroud equaled Thierry Henry’s national record of 51 goals with a header from Mbappe’s cross. Mbappe headed in a cross moments earlier. He knelt with one hand behind his back and his finger on his forehead in a new celebration. Craig Goodwin gave Australia the lead in the ninth minute. Adrien Rabiot equalized with a header in the 27th and set up Giroud’s first goal shortly after.

FIFA – Eriksen plays at World Cup after cardiac arrest at Euro 2020
Christian Eriksen is back playing a major tournament less than a year and a half after his cardiac arrest at the European Championship. Eriksen started in his customary playmaker position for Denmark’s opening game at the World Cup against Tunisia in Group D and played the full 90 minutes of a 0-0 draw. Medics used a defibrillator to restart Eriksen’s heart after he collapsed and was lifeless on the field at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen in June of last year. His appearance at the World Cup is the latest step of a remarkable comeback that has already seen him return to elite soccer in the Premier League.
FIFA – FIFA charges Ecuador over fan chants at World Cup opener
Discriminatory chants allegedly by Ecuador fans at the World Cup opening game led FIFA to open the first disciplinary case of the tournament. FIFA says the charge was brought “due to chants” at the game against Qatar on Sunday. FIFA cited the section of its disciplinary code dealing with discrimination. The chants were reportedly directed at Chile whose soccer federation brought a legal case ahead of the World Cup to try to take Ecuador’s place.

It was the fifth regular-season NFL game played in Mexico City and first since 2019. Technically a Cardinals home game, the festive, raucous announced crowd of 78,427 fans heavily favored the 49ers, roaring particularly loud when Kittle and Deebo Samuel scored on 39-yard touchdowns.
NCAAFB – Michigan RB Blake Corum gives thanks during Ohio State week
No. 3 Michigan running back Blake Corum may be the most pivotal player in The Game against No. 2 Ohio State on the road Saturday with a spot in the Big Ten championship game and likely the College Football Playoff at stake. His numbers stack up well with players at his position who have won the Heisman Trophy this century. Corum might have a shot to win the award if he can put together a spectacular performance in a win against the Buckeyes as former Michigan stars Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson did before being voted college football’s most outstanding player.
NCAAFB – Virginia cancels Virginia Tech game after players killed
The University of Virginia has canceled its game against rival Virginia Tech scheduled for Saturday following the slaying of three football players on campus just over a week ago. The university made the announcement Monday, two days after a nearly two-hour memorial service to remember Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. The three were fatally shot after a field trip to see a play in Washington. Two others were wounded. Former Virginia football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. faces three counts of second-degree murder and other charges. The Cavaliers also canceled their game slated for last weekend against No. 23 Coastal Carolina.
NCAAFB – UVA football player wounded in shooting gets out of hospital
A University of Virginia football player who was seriously wounded in a shooting that killed three of his teammates has been released from the hospital. The mother of running back Mike Hollins tweeted the news early Monday. She asked for continued prayers “as he recovers and settles into his new life.” She also asked for prayers for the families of the three players who were killed in the Nov. 13 shooting. Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler were shot on a bus as they returned to campus from a field trip to see a play in Washington. Authorities have charged Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a UVA student and former member of the football team, with second-degree murder and other charges in the shooting

Gareth Bale converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to offset Tim Weah’s first-half goal and give Wales a 1-1 draw against the United States in the return to the World Cup for both nations. Weah is the son of former FIFA Player of the Year and current Liberian President George Weah. The United States was back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament and appeared headed to victory. But Walker Zimmerman plowed down Bale from behind with the Welsh star’s back to the goal and Bale converted the penalty for his 41st international goal.
England 6, Iran 2 – Saka, Rashford help England rout Iran 6-2 at World Cup
Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford put the last year’s European Championship loss behind them in England’s 6-2 rout of Iran at the World Cup. Both players missed penalties in the shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final and were then subjected to racist abuse. But Saka scored twice at Khalifa International Stadium and Rashford came off the bench to add another with his first move of the match.
Netherlands 2, Senagal 0 – Netherlands strikes late to beat Senegal 2-0 at World Cup
Cody Gakpo and substitute Davy Klaasen scored late to give the Netherlands a 2-0 victory over Senegal at the World Cup. Gakpo rose to glance in a cross by Frenkie de Jong in the 84th minute with the Dutch team’s first effort on target in the Group A game. Klaasen added a second right at the end of eight minutes of stoppage time. The orange-shirted Dutch fans had been subdued until the late strikes. But Senegal predictably missed injured forward Sadio Mane to provide the finishing touch.

FIFA – FIFA threat makes World Cup teams nix ‘One Love’ armbands
FIFA’s threat of on-field punishment for players has pushed World Cup teams to back down. They abandoned a plan Monday for their captains to wear armbands that were seen as a rebuke to host nation Qatar’s human rights record. Just hours before the first players wearing the armbands in support of the “One Love” campaign were set to take the field, FIFA warned they would immediately be shown yellow cards. That changed the calculus for the seven European teams. They may have expected to merely be fined. The standoff was just the latest dispute that threatened to overshadow play on the field. Since being awarded the World Cup hosting rights in 2010, conservative Muslim Qatar has faced criticism of its treatment of low-paid migrant workers as well as its criminalization of homosexuality.
FIFA – Messi seeks history with Argentina
Lionel Messi returns to the World Cup for a fifth attempt at finally winning soccer’s biggest prize. He’ll also be hoping to make history with Argentina. The Argentines are among the favorites to win in Qatar and a victory would fill the one gaping hole in his resume. But a win of a draw Tuesday against Saudi Arabia would give Argentina a record-tying result. Argentina arrived in Qatar on a 36-match unbeaten streak. That is one shy of tying Italy’s record for international men’s soccer1. Other games Tuesday include France against Australia, Mexico facing Poland and Denmark playing Tunisia.
FIFA – Women’s protests overshadow Iran’s World Cup loss
Some Iran fans at the team’s World Cup opener against England showed their support for protests against the Islamic Republic’s regime. Both women, who are banned from watching soccer at home, and men wore T-shirts or waved signs printed with the mantra of the uprising — “Woman, Life, Freedom.” The Iran team also appeared to make a statement, choosing to not sing along with the national anthem before the match. Iran is competing in the World Cup amid unrest wracking their country, spurred by the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police.

Lions 31, Giants 18 – Williams leads Lions to 3rd straight win, 31-18 over Giants
Jamaal Williams ran for a career-high three touchdowns and the Detroit Lions stunned the New York Giants 31-18. The Lions posted consecutive roads wins and their first three-game winning streak since November 2017. Williams scored on runs of 4, 1 and 1 yards and the Lions’ much-maligned run defense shut down NFL leading rusher Saquon Barkley and forced three turnovers on a cold, blustery afternoon at MetLife Stadium. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble to help set up 14 points.
Falcons 27, Bears 24 – Koo’s late 53-yard FG lifts Falcons past Fields, Bears 27-24
Younghoe Koo’s 53-yard field goal gave Atlanta the lead with less than two minutes to play and the Falcons overcame another big game from Chicago’s Justin Fields to beat the Bears 27-24. Fields ran for 85 yards with a touchdown, but the Bears suffered their fourth consecutive loss. Chicago has lost six of seven. The Falcons ran out the clock. Marcus Mariota ran and threw for touchdowns for Atlanta, which pulled within one-half game of NFC South-leading Tampa Bay on the Buccaneers’ bye week. Atlanta running back Cordarrelle Patterson set the NFL record with his ninth career kickoff return for a touchdown.
Eagles 17, Colts 16 – Jalen Hurts’ late TD run gives Eagles 17-16 win over Colts
Jalen Hurts ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:20 remaining, and the Philadelphia Eagles rallied past the Indianapolis Colts 17-16. Coming off their first loss of the season, the Eagles trailed 13-3 in the fourth quarter. Hurts threw for a touchdown early in the period to get Philly within three. The third-year quarterback was 18 of 25 with 190 yards through the air and rushed 16 times for 86 yards as the Eagles won their seventh straight road game. Indianapolis never trailed until Hurts’ scoring run. Interim coach Jeff Saturday evened his record at 1-1 since taking over for the fired Frank Reich.

Hunter Dickinson scored 24 points and had 14 rebounds as No. 20 Michigan, startled by a wild buzzer-beater at the end of regulation, beat Ohio 70-66 in overtime. Down 63-61 with 2.1 seconds left in the second half, Ohio threw a length-of-the-court inbounds pass that hit the rim. After a crazy carom and a short miss, Dwight Wilson tossed in a floater to tie it as time expired. As several Wolverines stared in disbelief, the basket stood after a video review and forced overtime. Jett Howard added 13 for the Wolverines, who are 4-1. NCAAFB – Ohio State, Michigan to meet with much at stake
One of the greatest rivalries in sports seems set up for another classic. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan will both be ranked in the top five of the AP poll for the 12th time when they meet Saturday at the Horseshoe in what’s known as The Game. The winner will earn a trip to the Big Ten championship game and a probable spot in the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines are coming off a rare win in the series. Until Jim Harbaugh finally beat the Buckyes last year at home, they had won a school-record eight straight and 15 of 16 against Michigan.
NCAAFB – AP Top 25: USC moves into top 5 for 1st time in 5 years
Southern California moved into the top five of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in five years. Georgia received 62 of the 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 as the top four teams held their places after playing varying degrees of close games Saturday. No. 2 Ohio State received the other first-place vote. Michigan was No. 3 again, followed by TCU. The Trojans edged up two spots after a thrilling victory against rival UCLA. The last time USC was ranked in the top five was September of 2017, when it started at No. 4 but spent most of the season ranked in the teens before finishing at 12th.

Qatar’s first ever World Cup match ended in dismay for an overmatched team and with a place in unwanted soccer history. The controversy-laced tournament opened with Qatar getting outplayed in a 2-0 loss to Ecuador in front of 67,372 fans at Al Bayt Stadium. A host team had never lost its opening game in 92 years of soccer’s biggest event. FIFA – US returns to World Cup against Wales after 8-year wait
Gio Reyna, Joe Scally and Yusuf Musah were 11 years old the last time the United States took the field in a World Cup match. On the 3,066th day after that loss in Brazil, the Americans return to soccer’s showcase with a new-look team dreaming lofty goals. Filled with novelty, nerves and naivety, the U.S. takes the field against Wales on Monday night. A Friday match against England follows and group play ends Nov. 29 against Iran.
FIFA – Biden urges US World Cup team to `let’s go shock ’em all’
President Joe Biden telephoned the American World Cup team ahead of their opening match against Wales. He said “let’s go shock ’em all.” Biden called the team at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. Biden told the players “I know you’re the underdog.” The United States is back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament. The teams opens against Wales on Monday, then meets England on Friday and closes group play against Iran on Nov. 29.
FIFA – McKennie readies for World Cup with red, white & blue hair
Weston McKennie got into the patriotic spirit, dying his hair red, white and blue ahead of the United States’ World Cup opener against Wales. The 24-year-old midfielder from Fort Lewis, Washington, showed up with the new colors for the last training session before Monday’s match. McKennie, who plays for Juventus in Italy, previously had a streak of blond in his hair. The Americans open the World Cup on Monday night after failing to reach the 2018 tournament.
FIFA – Qatar riot police push back crowds at World Cup fan zone
The fan zone set up in central Doha has turned into a chaotic scene on the opening day of the World Cup as tens of thousands of fans are pushing and shoving against police lines to enter the venue. Fans were trying to enter the enclosed area that contains a big-screen television for viewing matches, places to buy beer, and little else. Riot police armed with batons and shields stood guard at the entrance. Some fans pleaded with officers to let them through the line. Only a trickle of pregnant women and handicapped fans were allowed to enter the fan zone through a special priority entrance shortly after the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador kicked off in another Qatari city, Al Khor.
FIFA – World Cup Viewer’s Guide: Qatar loses opener, US up on Day 2
The first World Cup in the Middle East finally began Sunday night with a flashy opening ceremony and a loss by host Qatar against Ecuador. Two of the best players in the world were ruled out of the tournament with injuries before it even began. France striker Karim Benzema is out after hurting his left thigh and Senegal forward Sadio Mane has a leg injury. Monday’s matches consist of the United States against Wales, England versus Iran and the Netherlands facing Senegal. Eight of the 13 team captains of European nations have planned to wear “One Love” armbands promoting inclusivity but they could face penalties for breaking rules regarding FIFA-issued uniforms.

NFL – NFL shifts Bills’ game vs. Browns to Detroit due to storm
The NFL is relocating the Bills’ home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit on Sunday because of a lake-effect snowstorm set to hit the Buffalo region. The move to relocate the game comes before the storm even began. The forecast is for between 1 to 3 feet of snow in the region through the weekend. The switch in sites means the Bills will play back-to-back games in Detroit. They’re scheduled to play the Lions on Thanksgiving. This will be the third time that Ford Field has hosted a relocated game because of snow. The Bills also played the Jets in Detroit in the 2014 season. The Lions home also hosted a Minnesota Vikings game against the New York Giants in 2010 after heavy snow caused the roof of the Metrodome to collapse the morning of the game.
NFL – Lions go for third straight win, seek to slow down Giants
The New York Giants will try to improve to 8-2 and end the Detroit Lions’ two-game winning streak when the teams meet Sunday. They are looking for their first three-game winning streak since 2017.
NFL – Rodgers, NFL players urge league to nix turf, go with grass
Aaron Rodgers and his peers around the NFL are calling for teams to tear up their turf playing surfaces and replace them with grass. The outpouring comes a week after NFL Players Association President JC Tretter called on six venues to immediately change their field types, saying the artificial turf in those stadiums was resulting in higher injury rates. Players are concerned about non-contact and lower extremity injuries. The NFL has said its data shows injury rates are similar on grass and artificial turf. Rodgers says owners could be "putting your money where your mouth is if player safety is important.” One of the fields mentioned is Ford Field in Detroit, which is a dome and grass cannot be grown inside.

MLB – Texas Rangers to host MLB’s 2024 All-Star Game
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Thursday that the Texas Rangers will host the 2024 All-Star Game. The retractable roof stadium hosted the neutral site World Series and NL Championship Series that season. Manfred made the announcement at the conclusion of this week’s owners’ meetings in New York. Next year’s game will take place in Seattle, which last hosted in 2001 in Ichiro’s rookie year and Cal Ripken Jr.’s final season. The 2026 game will take place in Philadelphia to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA.

NCAAFB – Freeman guides No. 18 Notre Dame back from 0-2 start
Marcus Freeman’s started his first full season as Notre Dame coach with a stumble and a fall. Losing at No. 2 Ohio State was understandable. Losing the home opener to Marshall and sliding from preseason No. 5 to out of the rankings was not. And losing starting quarterback Tyler Buchner with a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 2 only made matters worse. The Fighting Irish responded to the precarious moment by winning seven of their next eight games — all with a new quarterback, Drew Pyne. And now the Irish are back in the national conversation again.
NCAAFB – Virginia cancels game vs. Coastal Carolina after shooting
Virginia has canceled its home football game against No. 23 Coastal Carolina scheduled for Saturday following a shooting on campus that left three players dead and another wounded. The school says it has not determined if the Cavaliers will play their traditional final regular-season game at Virginia Tech on Nov. 26.

Calle Rosen, Tyler Pitlick and Ivan Barbashev also scored as St. Louis closed out a perfect three-game trip. Jordan Binnington made 25 saves. The 43-year-old Hossa gets his moment before Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh, another one of his five teams during his 19 NHL seasons. He becomes the eighth player to have his number retired by Chicago, joining an impressive list that also includes Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and Tony Esposito.

Tennis – Novak Djokovic has visa to play Australian Open in January
The Australian government confirmed that Novak Djokovic has been granted a visa to compete in the Australian Open in January a year after he was deported over his stance against COVID-19 vaccination. The 21-time Grand Slam champion had his visa cancelled on public interest grounds on Jan. 14 and lost an appeal against deportation in the Full Federal Court. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles says he had approved Djokovic’s application to revoke the cancellation decision because the ground for canceling the visa no longer existed. The visa ban could have lasted for three years. The 35-year-old from Serbia is clear to compete at the Australian Open, which runs from Jan. 16-29.

Michigan State 86, (4) Kentucky 77 – 2OT – Michigan State outlasts Tshiebwe, No. 4 Kentucky in 2OT
Malik Hall forced two extra periods with dunks off inbounds plays, and Michigan State outlasted No. 4 Kentucky 86-77 in double overtime after Oscar Tshiebwe concluded his strong season debut by fouling out. Tshiebwe, last season’s consensus national player of the year, had 22 points and 18 rebounds for the Wildcats before picking up his fifth foul late in the first overtime. Michigan State, coming off a one-point loss to No. 2 Gonzaga on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, appeared headed for another tough nonconference defeat. But the Spartans tied the game in the final seconds of regulation and overtime thanks to Hall, who finished with 20 points.

Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU held on to the top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference rivals Tennessee and LSU are at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. With three of the top six teams and only three weeks left until Selection Sunday, the SEC appears in position to put two teams in the CFP for the second straight season and third time overall. USC, the Pac-12′s best and probably last hope to make the final four, is seventh.
NCAAFB – Charlotte hires Michigan’s Poggi as head football coach
The Charlotte 49ers have named Michigan associate head coach Francis “Biff” Poggi as their head football coach. Poggi replaces Will Healy, who was fired earlier this season. Pete Rossomando has been serving as the interim coach and will finish out this season. Poggi inherits a team that has struggled in 2022. The 49ers are 2-9 entering the season finale Saturday against Louisiana Tech. Poggi’s introductory news conference is scheduled for next week. He is Charlotte’s third head football coach since the school’s FBS football program started in 2015.
NCAAFB – USC, UCLA may cause Big Ten schools to expand recruiting map
Southern California and UCLA’s pending arrivals to the Big Ten theoretically should give the league’s existing members the opportunity to expand their recruiting maps and pursue more West Coast prospects. But it apparently will take some time for these moves to have that kind of impact. Twelve high school juniors or seniors from states with Pac-12 programs have verbally committed to play football at one of the Big Ten’s 14 current member schools. Only four made their decisions after the Big Ten’s June 30 announcement that USC and UCLA would join the league in 2024.

Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.
NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’
Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were athletes who’d been journeying through varying periods of transition in their college football careers. One was bouncing back from a season-ending injury. Another had changed positions on the team. And yet another had recently transferred in from the University of Wisconsin.

The Lions scored 21 points in the fourth quarter on the way to their second straight win after losing five in a row. Cairo Santos missed the extra point. Goff led an eight-play, 91-yard drive in the closing minutes. Williams made it 31-30 when he scored with 2:21 remaining. Fields ran for 147 yards and two scores and threw for two. According to STATS, Chicago became the first team in NFL history to score at least 29 points in three consecutive games and lose all three. The Bears have dropped six of seven overall.
Colts 25, Raiders 20 – Matt Ryan, interim coach Saturday rally Colts past Raiders
Matt Ryan got his job back as the Colts’ starter under TV analyst-turned-interim coach Jeff Saturday. The veteran quarterback delivered a 35-yard touchdown pass to Parris Campbell to lead Indianapolis to a 25-20 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The touchdown with 5:07 left came shortly after the 37-year-old quarterback converted a third-and-3 with a 39-yard run to the Raiders’ 36-yard line. His play helped give Saturday his first victory. It also handed the Raiders their third loss in a row and will increase the scrutiny on first-year coach Josh McDaniels.

Mallory Pugh scored the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute and the U.S. women avoided a fourth straight loss with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Germany on Sunday. Sophia Smith also scored for the top-ranked United States, which went into the match at Red Bull Stadium with its first three-game losing streak since 1993. That loss snapped a 71-game unbeaten streak for the United States on home soil, stretching back to a loss to Australia in July 2017.
Golf – PGA – Finau sails to 4-shot victory in Houston, 3rd win of year
Tony Finau has won the Houston Open and it was never in doubt. For a guy who once had a hard time winning, this one was easy. Finau had a four-shot lead going into the final round. He led by as many as eight shots along the back nine. Finau shot a 69 and won by four shots over Tyson Alexander. Finau won for the third time this year. He now has four PGA Tour victories in his last 30 starts. He won only one time in his first 185 starts on the PGA Tour.
Golf – LPGA – Nelly Korda rallies to win Pelican and returns to No. 1
Nelly Korda’s first LPGA Tour victory of the year is taking her back to No. 1 in the world. Korda won the Pelican Women’s Championship after a duel with Lexi Thompson. Korda pulled ahead with two late birdies and shot 64. Thompson couldn’t catch her. Korda was emotional after her round because it’s been a tough year. She missed four months with a blood clot in her left arm and has struggled to regain her form. But she won the Pelican Women’s Championship for the second straight year. And she is No. 1 again. That’s where she started the year.

MHSAA – Niles new football field finally completed
Fans of the Niles football team have had a long road this season. The 2022 football season was played entirely on the road this fall as Viking Stadium was being converted from a grass playing field to artificial turf. Construction on the field didn’t start until August, which made it impossible for the Vikings to play any games at home this season. Niles had four home games scheduled, their game against Buchanan was played at Berrien Springs new Sylvester Stadium. Games against Vicksburg and Dowagiac were played at Steve Upton Field at Dickinson Stadium in St. Joe. And the Vikings homecoming game against Paw Paw was actually played at Falan Field in Paw Paw. But a week after the Vikings were eliminated from the 2022 football playoffs, Niles field is finally complete. Even though there aren’t any upcoming football games for the community to celebrate it’s unveiling. Niles is hosting a community celebration on Thursday, November 17 at 4:30 p.m. A ribbon cutting for the Niles High School Sports and Competition Field at Viking Stadium will be held at 4:30, then the field will remain open for the community to view the new field. The new field is lined for both football and soccer. It’s unknown if the Niles girls soccer team will be opening up the spring season on the new field or not. We do know that the first official football game will be on the opening week of the 2023 season against St. Joseph.
