Instead, he was proclaimed good to return by Bruins coach Jim Montgomery following the morning skate. Adam Erne scored for Detroit.

Draisaitl scored from the right side of the net with goalie Alex Stalock down to settle a wild, penalty-filled contest and snap Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

NCAAFB – No. 4 Michigan motivated to stop 2-game skid vs Michigan State
No. 4 Michigan is expected to rout rival Michigan State to stay undefeated and on pace to chase Big Ten and national championship goals. The Wolverines know better than to underestimate the Spartans. Mel Tucker is the first Michigan State coach to win his first two games against Michigan in the 114-game series, continuing a stretch of success that includes 10 wins in 14 games against the maize and blue. Jim Harbaugh is 3-4 in the rivalry as a coach. He says there’s no question recent results help get his players’ attention despite the Spartans’ struggles this season.
NCAAFB – No. 16 Syracuse hosts Notre Dame; important game for both
No. 16 Syracuse hosts Notre Dame on Saturday a week after the Orange suffered their first loss of the season, a six-point setback at No. 5 Clemson. The Orange will try to get back on track against the Irish, who have won four of five after starting the season with two losses. Syracuse is unbeaten in five games at home, while the Irish have a road victory over North Carolina, now ranked No. 21.

The confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean will hold a draw for the tournament on April 14. Quarterfinals will be played July 8-9, and semifinals on July 12.
Olympics – 2030 Winter Games – Vancouver’s shot at hosting 2030 Winter Olympics dims
British Columbia’s government says it will not support Vancouver’s bid to hold the 2030 Olympics in the province. The move places Salt Lake City closer to bringing the Games back to Utah. BC’s minister of tourism, arts, culture and sports says the cost of staging an Olympics was the main reason the government could not support the effort. Canada’s Olympic committee is planning a Friday news conference. If Vancouver bows out, it would leave Salt Lake City and Sapporo, Japan, as the two remaining candidates. Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics in 2002 and has said some of the infrastructure from those games still in play. Vancouver hosted the 2010 winter games.

MHSAA – MHSAA Shuts down Bridgman exhibition game
Bridgman was informed Thursday by the Michigan High School Athletic Association that their planned “exhibition game” against Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian could not be played. Bridgman and Northpointe each are above the 215 student limit for teams to qualify for the 8-man playoffs. The two schools were both 9-0 this season and planned on facing each other Friday night in Bridgman. In a note to parents by Bridgman, The MHSAA said “that our game violated MHSAA bylaws. As a member district, the consequences of this event could lead to removal from the organization, thus potentially jeopardizing all of our student-athletes.” Bridgman will instead host a community tailgate and recognize their senior players, cheerleaders and marching band members and an intrasquad scrimmage. Bridgman has 14 players on their football team, out of 278 students at the school. Northpointe Christian has a total enrollment of 320.

Zach LaVine scored 28 points as the Chicago Bulls held off a third-quarter surge to earn a 124-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Bulls forward DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points to move within seven points of becoming the 50th player in NBA history to reach the 20,000-point mark. The Pacers rallied from a 24-point deficit behind Buddy Hield’s 24 points, including three 3-pointers late in the third quarter that trimmed the Bulls’ lead to four. Bulls forward Patrick Williams added a season-high 10 points, and reserve guard Goran Dragic provided a spark with 13 points and five assists. Pacers center Myles Turner made his season debut after an ankle injury and grabbed six rebounds.

Beaudin had two goals and four assists in 22 games over three seasons for Chicago. The Quebec native was the 27th overall pick in the 2018 draft. NFL – Eagles acquire 3-time Pro Bowl DE Quinn from Bears
The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles have acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears. Chicago gets a fourth-round pick in 2023 in return. The 32-year-old Quinn is off to a slow start with just one sack and three quarterback hits. But he broke Hall of Famer Richard Dent’s franchise record with 18 1/2 sacks last year in a resurgent season. The Eagles are the lone remaining undefeated team.
NFL – Lions owner says she is still confident in team’s leadership
Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp spoke to reporters to share her frustration with the team’s 1-5 record and express confidence in the franchise’s leadership. Hamp says she doesn’t want everyone to push the panic button. Hamp fired general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia nearly two years ago during her first season in charge. After going through a search to hire general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, she doesn’t sound eager to make a move to get rid of either or both.
NFL – Ryan surprised, hopeful after getting benched by Colts
The disappointment was etched all over Matt Ryan’s face. Two days after learning he had been benched by Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich, Ryan told reporters he was surprised and shocked. Second-year quarterback Sam Ehligner will replace the 15-year veteran as the starter Sunday against Washington. And Reich says Ehlinger will likely keep the No. 1 job for the rest of the season.
MLB – World Series ump crew youngest in years, nod to K-zone tech
The seven-man umpire crew working this World Series is easily the youngest in recent memory. It reflects the impact of computerized strike zones, plus other factors including injuries, retirements and postseason rotations. At an average age of 45.7 years old, the crew calling the Philadelphia Phillies-Houston Astros matchup is more than five years younger than the average of World Series crews over the past decade, The Associated Press tallied. So young, in fact, there won’t be a full-time regular-season crew chief on the field in Game 2 on Saturday night. Usually, two or sometimes three veteran chiefs are on the Fall Classic crew. The Series starts Friday night in Houston.
NCAAFB – Irish need improved red-zone defense as ranked foes loom
Notre Dame’s defense has been its strength this season. But the Fighting Irish have been poor once opponents have gotten inside the red zone. Coach Marcus Freeman and defensive coordinator Al Golden says that needs to improve when the Irish face No. 16 Syracuse and No. 5 Clemson in back-to-back weeks. Irish opponents have scored on every trip inside the red zone this season, including touchdowns 82.4% of the time. That ranks 130th out of 131 FBS teams.
NCAAFB – SEC takes strong stance against storming the field
The Southeastern Conference wants tremendous competition. It also wants teams from both schools to have a safe experience after playing in perhaps the most frenzied arenas in college football. Wild celebrations after No. 3 Tennessee’s landmark home win over No. 6 Alabama and No. 18 LSU’s victory over 15th-ranked Mississippi turned into hefty fines for both winning schools for violating the SEC’s Access to Competition Area. Tennessee was fined $100,000 and LSU was docked $250,000. The SEC has an increasing scale on fines with violations with additional violations triggering bigger penalties.
NCAA – NCAA approves new guidance on player endorsement deals
The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors approved new guidance to members on name, image and likeness activities, clarifying how schools, coaches and staffers can be involved athletes’ endorsement and sponsorship deals. The latest clarifications to the NCAA’s interim NIL policy create no new rules. They are intended to give athletic departments a better idea of what types of support fall outside existing bylaws. The guidance said school personnel, including coaches, can be part of fundraising for collectives, which are booster-funded organizations that provide opportunities for athletes to profit from their names, images and likenesses. But coaches and school staff members cannot donate directly to collectives.

Beal was limited to 21:49 because of back tightness, although he was able to return late in the third quarter after missing the entire second. The Wizards actually broke the game open without him and cruised to a lopsided victory. Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 points, Will Barton contributed 16 and Beal was able to finish with 13. NBA – NBA, NBPA seeking more respectful tone at all levels of game
The NBA and its players have announced a plan to encourage better and more respectful behavior within basketball, even at youth levels. It’s part of the league’s “Respect for the Game” initiative. The NBA has been using that term with players for nearly two decades, primarily hoping to foster more positive interactions between players and referees during games.
WNBA – Russian court rejects Griner appeal of her 9-year sentence
A Russian court has rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. The all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Reflecting pressure on the U.S. administration to do more to bring Griner home, the U.S. secretary of state revealed in July that Washington had made a proposal to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

Taylor Raddysh, Philipp Kurashev and Jonathan Toews also scored in the Blackhawks’ fourth straight victory after dropping their first two games of the season. Chicago overcame two-goal deficits in its previous three wins, but had to hold on against the Panthers in the final 10 minutes. Eetu Luostarinen and Matthew Tkachuk scored for the Panthers. Tkachuk’s goal, on a nifty mid-air deflection of Carter Verhaeghe’s point shot, closed the gap to 3-2 with 7:13 to play. Chicago goalie Alex Stalock, stopped 29 shots.
MLB – Tigers hire Rays’ Rob Metzler as VP, assistant GM
The Detroit Tigers have hired Tampa Bay scouting director Rob Metzler as vice president and assistant general manager. Metzler spent 15 seasons with the Rays, working the past seven years as the team’s senior director of amateur scouting. He will lead the Tigers’ amateur and international scouting departments, working under president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Detroit finished 66-96 in 2022 and has not made the playoffs in eight years. Harris took over the front office after longtime general manager Al Avila was fired in August.
NFL – NFL says referees didn’t get Mike Evans’ autograph
The NFL says the two game officials seen interacting with Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans in the tunnel of Bank of America Stadium after the Buccaneers’ 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday didn’t ask for an autograph. The league released a statement saying the interaction “did not involve a request by the game officials for an autograph” and the officials were reminded of the “importance of avoiding even the appearance of impropriety” when interacting with players. NFL officials are banned from asking for autographs or memorabilia under their labor contract. Evans said Tuesday he was talking about golf with the referees.
NFL – Titans release renderings of proposed new domed stadium
The Tennessee Titans’ proposed domed stadium would seat approximately 60,000 people and cover 1.7 million square feet under renderings released Tuesday. The renderings show the stadium with porches and outdoor terraces providing views of Nashville, a circular translucent roof and a variety of areas for fans. An architect has not yet been hired. The new stadium would cost $1.2 billion in public funding and is considered to be the largest public commitment for an NFL stadium to date. The release follows last week’s announcement of a deal for $760 million in local financing that still must be approved by the Nashville council and sports authority.
Golf – LIV Golf team finale set for Doral, PGA Tour goes to Bermuda
LIV Golf heads to Trump National Doral in Miami this weekend for the finale of the Saudi-funded series’ inaugural season. The PGA Tour heads to Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Lucas Herbert of Australia is not returning to defend his title. NCAAFB – Big Ten boasts some of nation’s top defenses in 2022
Just four Big Ten teams are ranked in the AP Top 25, but six of the top 12 defenses in college football reside in the conference. Illinois has the top-ranked defensive unit in the nation, followed by No. 2 Ohio State. Michigan is ranked fifth in defense. Iowa was propped up by its tough defense before running into the speeding Buckeyes last week. The Hawkeyes are still sixth best in the nation. Rutgers and Minnesota have needed the help of their defenses, ranked seventh and 12th, respectively, to stay above .500.

Chicago Bears 33, New England Patriots 14
Bears 33, Patriots 14 – Fields, Bears score 23 straight points, beat Pats 33-14
Justin Fields threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and ran for 82 yards and another score, and the Bears defense forced returning Patriots starter Mac Jones back to the bench to give Chicago a 33-14 victory over New England. In a matchup of QB’s from the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship game, Fields outperformed Jones, who led Alabama to victory over Fields’ Ohio State. Fields also outplayed Patriots rookie Bailey Zappe, who came on after Jones managed just two three-and-outs and an interception in his return after missing three games with a high ankle sprain. Zappe led the Pats to back-to-back touchdowns and a 14-10 lead. But Fields answered and the Bears (3-4) led 20-14 at the half. In the second half Chicago ran off 23 unanswered points.
NFL – Colts bench injured QB Matt Ryan in favor of Sam Ehlinger
The Indianapolis Colts are benching starting quarterback Matt Ryan and will start Sam Ehlinger in Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Coach Frank Reich says Ryan has a separated throwing shoulder though the injury was not the reason he was demoted. Ehlinger started his rookie season on injured reserve, but was promoted to the active roster in October 2021. He supplanted Super Bowl 52 MVP Nick Foles as No. 2 on the depth chart heading into Week 6. Ryan leads the NFL with nine interceptions and has fumbled 11 times this season.
NFL – NFL looking into interaction between refs, Bucs WR Evans
The NFL said it is looking into what transpired between two game officials and Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans in the tunnel of the stadium after the Buccaneers’ 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. A reporter captured a video of side judge Jeff Lamberth and line judge Tripp Sutter approaching Evans as he made his way toward the locker room. There is a short inaudible exchange with Evans, before he appears to write something on a slip of paper handed to him by the officials. A second video appears to show Evans writing on paper as Lamberth stood next to him. According to the CBA agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association game officials are not allowed to “ask players, coaches or any other team personnel for autographs or memorabilia.”

DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points, Nikola Vucevic added 18 points and 23 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls wiped out a big early deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 120-102. The Bulls went from trailing by 19 in the first quarter with Jayson Tatum providing an early spark for Boston to leading by 16 near the end of the half. They then went on a big run after the lead dwindled to three early in the third and handed the Celtics their first loss after a 3-0 start. Ayo Dosunmu scored 22. Zach LaVine added 19 points, helping the Bulls stop a two-game skid and pick up their first win since the opener at Miami. Tatum scored 2 to lead Boston.

NCAAFB – Michigan’s Harbaugh: PSU’s Franklin ‘ringleader’ in scuffle
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Penn State coach James Franklin acted as a “ringleader” when the No. 4 Wolverines and No. 13 Nittany Lions clashed nearly two weeks ago, dismissing Franklin’s claim that a policy change was needed to keep things orderly beneath Michigan Stadium. Harbaugh said Monday it wasn’t the lack of a policy that caused a problem when the teams exchanged heated words at halftime of Michigan’s lopsided win over Penn State.
NCAAMBKB – Nantz to call last Final Four in ’23, Eagle to take over
Jim Nantz will step away from calling the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after next year and will be succeeded by Ian Eagle. CBS Sports confirmed the move on Monday night. It was first reported by the New York Post. Nantz has been a part of CBS’ coverage of the tournament since 1986. He was the studio host for five years before calling his first Final Four in 1991. The 63-year old Nantz will remain the lead voice of the network’s NFL coverage along with leading its golf team. CBS has The Masters and PGA Championship.
MLB – Love ’em or hate ’em, Series-bound Astros keep on winning
The Houston Astros are off to the World Series for the fourth time in six seasons. It’s a remarkable show of staying power for the franchise, particularly in a baseball era that includes a 12-team playoff gauntlet. Yet the dichotomy of this generation of Astros will probably never go away. The stench of the franchise’s 2017 cheating scandal still lingers. Only five players are left on the roster that were a part of that 2017 team. It’s a team many fans love to hate, but the days of the Astros being a postseason fixture don’t look like they’re ending any time soon.
Tennis – Pegula, Gauff 1st 2 US women in Top 4 since Serena, Venus
Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are the first pair of U.S. women both in the top four spots of the WTA rankings since sisters Serena and Venus Williams were up there a dozen years ago.Pegula rose two places to a career-best No. 3 after winning the biggest title of her career at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico. Gauff, who lost in the quarterfinals at that tournament, moved up from No. 7 to No. 4.The last time two Americans were that high in the women’s tennis rankings was the week of Oct. 18, 2010, when Serena Williams was No. 2 and Venus Williams was No. 4.
Olympics – Russian runner stripped of 2012 Olympics title for doping
Ten years after the London Olympics, 400-meter hurdles champion Natalya Antyukh has been disqualified for doping. The Russian’s case means Lashinda Demus of the United States is set to be upgraded to the gold medal. Antyukh was already serving a four-year ban in a previous case judged by the Court or Arbitration for Sport last year. That stripped her results from 2013 to 2015. The new ruling based on historical evidence recovered from a Moscow testing laboratory database further disqualifies Antyukh from mid-July 2012. At age 39, Demus is in line to win an Olympic gold.

Cowboys 24, Lions 6 – Cowboys lean on defense in Prescott’s return, top Lions 24-6
Ezekiel Elliott ran for two 1-yard touchdowns and Dak Prescott threw for a score in his return from injury while the Dallas Cowboys leaned on their defense again in a 24-6 victory over the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys recovered Jamaal Williams’ fumble inside their 1 with a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Jared Goff was responsible for four other Detroit turnovers, in total, the Lions had 5 turnovers in the second half. Prescott missed the previous five games with a fractured right thumb. He was rusty, but the Dallas defense led the way much as it did while Cooper Rush went 4-1 as the starter in Prescott’s place. Detroit fell to 1-5 last place in the NFL. During the game, Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was ruled out in the first half because of a concussion. Brown took an arm to the head when he was tackled by Jourdan Lewis on a 4-yard catch in the first quarter.
Titans 19, Colts 10 – Titans sweep Colts for 2nd straight season with 19-10 win
Andrew Adams returned an interception 76 yards for the first pick-6 of his career, and the Tennessee Titans never trailed in beating the Indianapolis Colts 19-10 Sunday for their second straight sweep of their AFC South rivals. The reigning two-time division champion Titans won their fourth straight overall. They’ve now beaten the Colts five straight and six of their past seven. This was just their fourth sweep of the Colts since becoming division rivals in 2002. Randy Bullock made four field goals. His last two gave Tennessee its first points this season in the fourth quarter. The Colts turned it over three times and gave up three sacks.

Bryce Harper slugged his fifth homer of the postseason, a two-run blast in the eighth inning that turned Citizens Bank Park into a madhouse, and the $330 million slugger powered the Philadelphia Phillies past the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday and into the World Series for the first the time since 2009. Rhys Hoskins also hit a two-run homer to spark Philadelphia’s improbable run to the National League pennant and a shot at its first World Series championship since 2008. The wild-card Phillies were the last club into the 12-team playoff field this year after finishing third in the NL East.
Astros 6, Yankees 5 – Astros sweep Yankees in ALCS, advance to World Series again
Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman delivered big hits and the Houston Astros advanced to the World Series again, finishing a four-game sweep of New York in the AL Championship Series with a 6-5 victory aided by another defensive gaffe from the Yankees. Taking advantage of a costly error by second baseman Gleyber Torres to produce the go-ahead rally in the seventh inning, the Astros won their second consecutive pennant and fourth in six years. Rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña hit a three-run homer off ailing Yankees starter Nestor Cortes to help the AL West champions overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Peña was named MVP of the ALCS. Houston will open the World Series at home Friday night against Bryce Harper and the wild-card Philadelphia Phillies.

The Buckeyes got 18 first-place votes and 1,513 points. No. 3 Tennessee received 13 first-place votes. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Alabama also held their spots.
NASCAR – Larson wins at Homestead, holding off Chastain at end
Kyle Larson found his way into NASCAR’s headlines for yet another week. This time, for a much more pleasant reason. Larson held off Ross Chastain to cap a dominant showing in the second-to-last race of the NASCAR season at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, after leading 199 of the 267 laps over the 1-1/2 mile course. It was Larson’s third win of the season. And it came a week after the reigning Cup champion — who was eliminated earlier in this year’s playoffs — was intentionally spun by Bubba Wallace in an act of retaliation at Las Vegas.
