Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3 – Chapman 2 HRs, Kikuchi wins in return as Jays top Tigers 5-3
Matt Chapman hit two home runs, Yusei Kikuchi came off the injured list to pitch five solid innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 for their 10th victory in 12 games. Chapman hit a two-run homer off left-hander Tyler Alexander in the fourth and a solo shot off Angel De Jesus in the sixth, the ninth multi-homer game of his career and first this season. The home runs were his 17th and 18th of the year. Jonathan Schoop and Willi Castro hit solo home runs for the Tigers.
Giants 4, Cubs 2 – Wood takes no-hitter into 7th, Giants beat Cubs to stop skid
Alex Wood took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 to stop a seven-game slide. Yermín Mercedes hit an early two-run single, and four Giants pitchers combined on a three-hitter to snap Chicago’s six-game winning streak. An umpire’s ruling that appeared to give the Cubs a break instead contributed to San Francisco’s three-run third. Wood allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two. His no-hit bid ended in the seventh on Ian Happ’s leadoff single. Two outs later, Patrick Wisdom belted his 18th homer of the season.

The Blue Jays announced plans Thursday for a $230 million renovation of Rogers Centre, their downtown home since 1989 when it was knows as SkyDome, but said the change will not involve replacing the artificial turf surface with grass. The renovation, to be undertaken in stages over the next two or three winters, will begin with the team adding raised bullpens in left and right field, adjusting the dimensions and heights of the current outfield wall, and adapting the outfield seating areas to add bars and patios. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro did not disclose the outfield dimensions and fence heights, saying they have not been finalized.

WNBA – Kremlin poker-faced on US swap offer to free Griner, Whelan
The Kremlin has warned that a possible prisoner swap with the United States involving American basketball star Brittney Griner needs to be negotiated quietly without fanfare. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that Washington had offered Russia a deal that would bring home Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. Asked Thursday about the U.S. offer, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied that prisoner swaps are typically negotiated discreetly behind the scenes. He emphasized that “no agreements have been finalized” and refused to provide further details. Griner has been detained in Russia since inspectors at a Moscow airport found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.
NFL – Cardinals remove Kyler Murray’s independent-study addendum
The Arizona Cardinals have removed an addendum to quarterback Kyler Murray’s $230.5 million, five-year contract that mandated at least four hours of “independent study” during game weeks. In a statement Thursday, the team said: “After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in his contract.” Earlier in the day, Murray declared that there have been no “shortcuts” to success during his football career, no matter what provisions the Cardinals included in his new contract.
NFL – QB Ryan challenges Colts to keep up with quick-paced tempo
Matt Ryan has seen and done just about everything other than winning a Super Bowl in his 14-year NFL career. He’s been the league MVP. He’s won a conference title. He’s steadily climbed the league’s career passing charts. But now, for the first time since his rookie season, Ryan is settling into a whole new world. The Indianapolis Colts new quarterback is getting acclimated to a new playbook, new teammates, a new training camp facility and a new routine.
NFL – Rodgers says Packers offense can grow from early adversity
Aaron Rodgers says he expects the Green Bay Packers offense to face plenty of adversity during the preseason as it lines up against a defense that seems far more settled. The four-time MVP quarterback believes that could prove beneficial in the long run. Rodgers says that taking some lumps early is “going to build some character.” The two-time reigning MVP is in a much different situation than last year. He’s smoothed over his relationship with team management and is dealing with a new group of receivers now that All-Pro wideout Davante Adams is with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Golf – PGA – Finau, Pendrith share Rocket Mortgage lead at 8-under 64
Tony Finau, coming off his third career victory on the PGA Tour, and Taylor Pendrith shared the first-round lead at 8-under 64 on Thursday in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, Michael Thompson, Cameron Champ, Lee Hodges and Matt Wallace were two shots back. Si Woo Kim and Kurt Kitayama, both ranked among the top 70 in the world, were in the pack at 67 at Detroit Golf Club. The leaderboard was filled with players who took advantage of favorable scoring conditions with morning tee times. In the afternoon, the wind picked up and the scores did as well. Finau rallied from a five-shot deficit with 11 holes left to win the 3M Open by three shots Sunday in Minnesota.
Golf – Trump says Saudi-funded tour creates ‘gold rush’ for players
Former President Donald Trump says the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit has created a “gold rush” for players. Trump played a round Thursday on his home course at Trump National Bedminster. This one was the LIV Golf Invitational pro-am. He played with Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. Trump says what the Saudi-backed league is doing is good for golf because it gives players an alternative. It’s been a disruptor for more than the PGA Tour. Now the Ryder Cup is involved. Henrik Stenson signed with LIV and was stripped of his captaincy for Europe. Reports indicated Luke Donald will be replacing him.
Nassar – FBI open to settling claims by gymnasts abused by Nassar
The FBI has reached out to attorneys representing Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar to begin settlement talks in the $1 billion claim they brought against the federal government. That’s according to three people familiar with the matter. The FBI’s general counsel contacted the lawyers for Olympic gold medalists Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney and dozens of other women on Wednesday. The people say the FBI’s attorneys told the lawyers for the women that they had received the federal tort claims and to say the agency was “interested” in a resolution, including discussions about a potential settlement.

Tigers 4, Padres 3 – Reyes’ 2-out, 2-run double in 9th rallies Tigers over Padres
Victor Reyes hit a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning to rally the Detroit Tigers over the San Diego Padres 4-3. The Padres led 3-2 going into the ninth and brought on closer Taylor Rogers, who gave up a one-run lead in the ninth on Tuesday night in a game San Diego eventually won in the 10th. This time, Jeimer Canderlario led off with a double before Rogers retired the next two batters. Jonathan Schoop followed with a dribbler down the third-base line for a single that put runners at the corners. Reyes then hit a drive over the head of right fielder Nomar Mazara to win it. Mazara got close to the wall chasing the ball and let the carom bounce past him as both runners scored easily.
Rockies 6, White Sox 5 – Díaz, Rockies rally off Graveman in 9th, stun White Sox 6-5
Elias Díaz hit a two-run single off Kendall Graveman in the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies overcame the loss of starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5. Senzatela, making his second start since returning from a shoulder injury, led 3-2 in the seventh when Leury García hit a comebacker off the pitcher’s left shin that rolled away for a single. After Lucas Gilbreath blew the lead, Graveman walked Colorado’s first three batters in the ninth. Robert Stephenson pitched a perfect ninth.

NFL – Lions optimistic going into second season under Campbell
The Detroit Lions are optimistic that the needs they addressed in the offseason will make the second year under coach Dan Campbell much better than the first in 2021 when they won just three games. In the offseason, the Lions made a conscious effort to improve their passing game. By signing wide receiver DJ Chark in free agency and using the 12th overall pick in the draft on Alabama wideout Jameson Williams — who starts camp on the non-football injury list — Detroit is hoping to stretch defenses. Defensively, the Lions drafted Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchison with the second overall pick and re-signed Charles Harris after a 7 1/2-sack season in an effort to improve a pass rush that ranked 30th in sacks.
NFL – Quinn says he’s on board as rebuilding Bears begin practices
Chicago Bears defensive end Robert Quinn joined the rest of the team on the practice field for the first time under new coach Matt Eberflus after missing all offseason voluntary and mandatory work. Quinn says he doesn’t expect or want to be traded, as the rumors suggested all offseason. This doesn’t mean the Bears are without controversy at the start of training camp. Linebacker Roquan Smith wants a new contract and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Smith was at practice, just not taking part. Eberflus doesn’t want to reveal the injury that landed Smith on the PUP list, assuming there is one. Smith was at all the offseason practices and did not have an injury then.
NFL – NFL finance group supports Broncos sale to Walmart heir
The NFL finance committee is unanimously recommending the league owners approve the proposed $4.65 billion sale of the Denver Broncos to the heir of the Walmart fortune. Team owners will gather Aug. 9 to vote on the sale. Twenty-four yes votes are needed among the 32 teams to approve the sale which is the largest for a sports team anywhere in the world. The ownership group led by former Walmart chairman Rob Walton won the bidding for the team that’s been run by the Pat Bowlen Trust for several years.
NCAAFB – Big Ten – Old-guy quarterbacks could give Big Ten different look
Sean Clifford and Tanner Morgan first met on a seventh-grade football field. They’re final matchup could come Oct. 22 when Minnesota visits Penn State. They may be the two oldest quarterbacks in the Big Ten. The 24-year-old Clifford and 23-year-old Morgan are still trying to lead Penn State and Minnesota to division titles. But they are part of a growing trend among conference teams. At least nine conference schools are expected to open the season with the same quarterbacks that finished last season.
NCAAFB – C-USA’s state of transition: 6 of 11 schools in final year
Conference USA is in a state of transition, with six of its 11 football teams going into their last seasons in the league. Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton was a freshman quarterback when Houston won the first C-USA football title in 1996. He’s now going into his fourth season with the Hilltoppers, who are one of five teams that will be staying. He says the conference has recreated itself many times and become stronger every time. Defending champion and preseason favorite UTSA is among six schools leaving next summer for the American Athletic Conference.
WNBA – In rare contact, US offers Russia deal for Griner, Whelan
The Biden administration has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. That’s according to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also revealed Wednesday that he has asked to speak with his Kremlin counterpart for the first time in months. The statement marked the first time the U.S. government has publicly revealed any concrete action it has taken to secure the release of Griner. He did not offer details on the proposed deal outlined to the Russians, though a person familiar with the matter said the U.S. has offered to trade convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Whelan and Griner.
WNBA’s Griner tells drug trial: ‘My career is my whole life’
WNBA star Brittney Griner testified at her drug possession trial in Russia that an interpreter translated only a fraction of what was said during questioning when she was detained at Moscow’s airport in February and officials told her to sign documents without giving an explanation. The testimony by Griner came on the same day that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home the WNBA star and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. Griner has been detained since mid-February after police said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She has pleaded guilty to the charges.
Olympics – US sprint great Allyson Felix joins IOC athletes’ commission
American sprint great Allyson Felix and a refugee cyclist originally from Afghanistan have joined the International Olympic Committee’s athletes’ commission. Felix is a seven-time Olympic champion. She joins after winning her 14th career world championship title last week. Cyclist Masomah Ali Zada was born in Afghanistan and competed in the women’s cycling time trial on the IOC’s refugee Olympic team last year in Tokyo. The other two new members are two-time Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee of Britain and Oluseyi Smith of Canada.
Olympics – Germany offers money to families of Olympic attack victims
The German government has indicated it’s willing to pay further compensation to the families of 11 Israeli athletes killed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich by a Palestinian group. Relatives of the athletes, however, call the proposed amount “insulting.” The families have long criticized how German authorities handled the attack and its aftermath. Demands for further compensation have threatened to overshadow a planned memorial event for the 50th anniversary of the massacre. Germany’s Interior Ministry said it was holding talks with the relatives and that the “serious consequences for the surviving dependents" should be reassessed. It was not clear how much money was being offered to the families.

Padres 6, Tigers 4 – F/10 – Alfaro gets key 10th-inning hit as Padres beat Tigers 6-4
Jorge Alfaro capped San Diego’s three-run 10th inning with a two-run single, and the Padres beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Luke Voit finished with three RBIs for San Diego after he was hit by a bases-loaded pitch from All-Star Gregory Soto in the 10th. After Matthew Batten struck out swinging for the second out, Alfaro drove in Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado with a single to right. Detroit got one back on Jeimer Candelario’s RBI double in the bottom half. But Nick Martinez retired Willi Castro on a fly ball to center, earning his fourth save.
White Sox 2, Rockies 1 – Kopech stars as Chicago White Sox top Colorado Rockies 2-1
Michael Kopech pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox topped the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Yasmani Grandal had three hits in Chicago’s third straight win. Yoán Moncada doubled home Adam Engel in the seventh. All-Star closer Liam Hendriks worked a rocky ninth for his 19th save, surrendering Ryan McMahon’s leadoff homer. Colorado wasted a stellar performance by Germán Márquez, who permitted one run and seven hits in six innings.
Cubs 4, Pirates 2 – Contreras salutes fans, helps Cubs win 6th in row, top Bucs
Willson Contreras drew a standing ovation in perhaps his last home game at Wrigley Field, then keyed an early burst as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for their season-high sixth straight win. Contreras, one of three members left from the 2016 World Series title team, tipped his cap after being cheered at the plate his first time up. He hit a soft single in a three-run first inning. Contreras, an All-Star catcher who can become a free agent after this season, has acknowledged this might be his last homestand as a member of the Cubs before the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He saluted the fans with a fist in his last at-bat in the seventh. Representatives from the Blue Jays and White Sox were in attendance.

Kelsey Plum scored 12 of her 24 points in the first quarter as the Las Vegas Aces raced to an early 23-point lead, then held on for a 93-83 victory over the Chicago Sky to win the second WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship mid-season tournament. Plum, who won the All-Star MVP in Chicago a few weeks ago, hit six of her nine 3-point attempts. Chelsea Gray had 19 points — including nine pivotal ones in the third quarter — and earned MVP of the game. A’ja Wilson had 17 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks as the Aces dominated early, then repelled several Sky runs in the second half. Jackie Young had 18 points. Candace Parker led Chicago with 20 points and Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman each added 18.
WNBA – Russian expert at Griner’s trial discusses medical cannabis
The latest Russian court hearing in the drug trial of American basketball star Brittney Griner has focused on testimony about countries that regard cannabis as having legitimate medicinal uses. Griner has acknowledged she was carrying vape canisters containing cannabis oil when she was arrested in February at a Moscow airport. But she contends she had no criminal intent and that the canisters ended up in her luggage inadvertently because of hasty packing. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of transporting drugs. Griner’s trial began July 1. Tuesday’s session lasted about 90 minutes before the case was adjourned until Wednesday.
NCAAFB – Big Ten – Bold, aggressive Big Ten leaves door open for more expansion
Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren says the conference will be bold and aggressive as college sports goes through a period of sweeping change. He left the door open for more expansion after the league added Southern California and UCLA for the 2024 season. Warren says the future could involve more expansion. He says the Big Ten will be strategic and look for schools that add value to the conference. The Big Ten’s big moves came less than a year after Texas and Oklahoma announced plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC.
NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten coaches relying heavily on revamped defenses
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has a new defensive coordinator for the second straight year. Ohio State coach Ryan Day also made a coaching change. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and seemingly everyone else in the Big Ten need to plug defensive holes, too. Relying on revamped defenses has become a trend in the traditionally rough-and-tumble Big Ten. It often becomes the definitive line between success or failure.
NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten’s expansion further damages Rose Bowl’s status
Former Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez says the Rose Bowl will always be important to the Big Ten, but making the College Football Playoff is the priority for today’s players. The future of the Rose Bowl as a showcase game, mostly featuring teams from Big Ten and Pac-12 on New Year’s Day, was already murky as the College Football Playoff creeps toward expansion. Now that the Big Ten has poached Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12, it remains to be seen if the West Coast’s Power Five conference will still be an important part of the Rose Bowl.
NCAAFB – Lakeshore grad suits up for Crimson Tide
Athletes in Southwest Michigan are no strangers to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level, but it’s rare that they continue on at a Division 1 university, and even more rare when a local football player suits up for one of the top football teams in the nation. Lakeshore’s Logan Mooney earned one of 16 preferred walk-on roster spots for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Mooney, who just graduated from Lakeshore High School, played as a middle linebacker and quarterback for the Lancers team that went 7-4 last season. Mooney was named SMAC All-Conference as a linebacker with 73 tackles, 10 for loss, and 2 sacks. Mooney is learning a new defensive position for Nick Saban’s squad, as Mooney is moving over to the strong safety position. Alabama finished last season at 13-2 and lost to Georgia in the college football playoff championship game. The Crimson Tide are currently ranked number 2 in the preseason AP college football poll and will open the season on Saturday September 3rd at home against Utah State. Mooney’s Lakeshore Lancers open up the season on Thursday, August 25th at home against Zeeland West, which will be heard live on 97.5 Y-Country.
NFL – NFL teams open camp with biggest question still unanswered
Training camps opened across the NFL and the biggest offseason question remains unanswered. The Cleveland Browns still don’t know how many games they’ll be without Deshaun Watson, who is still waiting for retired judge Sue L. Robinson to issue a ruling following his disciplinary hearing that concluded nearly four weeks ago. The league and the NFL Players’ Association requested a decision by the start of training camp, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the union, had no obligation to meet that deadline. Representatives are hopeful a decision comes this week.
Bears’ Smith, Quinn report, unclear if they’ll practice
Star linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive end Robert Quinn are on time for the Chicago Bears’ first training camp under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Whether they’ll choose to participate when practices begin Wednesday remains to be seen. The Bears could have a big issue on their hands if two of their best defensive players decide not to practice. Smith and Quinn could opt instead to “hold in” by simply attending meetings while not participating in on-field activities. Smith wants an extension as he enters the fifth and final season of his rookie deal, while the 32-year-old Quinn’s future with a rebuilding team is unclear. Poles said he hadn’t seen either player. But he was told they had reported.
NASCAR – NASCAR slams McDowell and team for illegally modified part
NASCAR has levied another round of massive penalties, this time against Michael McDowell and Front Row Motorsports, for illegal modifications discovered after McDowell’s sixth-place finish at Pocono Raceway. NASCAR fined crew chief Blake Harris $100,000 and suspended him for four races. McDowell was docked 100 driver points, and Front Row docked 100 owner points. If the No. 34 team wins one of the five remaining regular-season races to qualify for the playoffs, McDowell will be docked 10 playoff points. The penalty was issued for an illegal modification of a single source supplied part.

Men abused by Ohio State doctor ask court to revive lawsuits
Attorneys for some of the men who sued Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by team doctor Richard Strauss argue a federal appeals court should overturn a judge’s dismissal and let the lawsuits continue. A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday. Ohio State’s lawyers contend the claims were years too late. They argue that the students knew enough that, legally speaking, they should have started looking into further recourse back then if the late doctor’s behavior and Ohio State’s inaction were as egregious as alleged. The plaintiffs argue the clock didn’t start until allegations came to light in 2018.
Judge halts horse racing authority enforcement in La., W.Va.
A federal judge says a national horse racing authority cannot enforce its rules in Louisiana and West Virginia while a lawsuit challenging the organization is in court. Western District of Louisiana Judge Terry Doughty in granting a preliminary injunction said the Horseracing Integrity & Safety Authority likely went beyond its bounds on three rules that went into place July 1. State and racing officials in those jurisdictions sued to prevent the new federal authority’s regulations from going into effect. HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus says the judge’s ruling does not question the organization’s constitutionality or validity.

MLB – MLB players’ union rejects international draft proposal
The players’ association has rejected what Major League Baseball called its final offer for an international draft, a move that will keep direct draft-pick compensation in place for free agents and likely limit the market for some older players. MLB – Senators give Manfred until Friday to respond on minors
A group of U.S. senators has given baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred until Friday to respond to questions about the sport’s antitrust exemption and minor leaguers. The senators had made the request to Manfred on July 18, and MLB asked for the additional time. Richard Durbin and Charles Grassley are among the four senators who asked Manfred a series of questions that could be a prelude to proposed legislation further limiting an exemption created by a 1922 Supreme Court decision.
NFL – NFL enters media streaming marketplace with ‘NFL+’ service
The NFL is making its move into offering its own media streaming platform. The league announced that “NFL+” launched on Monday. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a phone interview with The AP that the direct-to-consumer offering gives the league the ability to understand what fans and non-fans are seeking in terms of content and customize it for them.
NFL – Chicago mayor presents 3 options for improving Soldier Field
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has presented three options for renovating Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears, but the team said it’s not interested. Lightfoot on Monday proposed fully enclosing the stadium by rebuilding both end zones with columns that can support a dome; rebuilding both end zones with columns to make the stadium dome-ready; or modifying Soldier Field to be a multi-purpose stadium better suited for soccer. The mayor’s office estimated the costs of the three options would range from $900 million to $2.2 billion. It didn’t say how it would pay for any of the options.

Detroit has extended their affiliation deal with Grand Rapids until at-least the 2026-27 season. Grand Rapids has been the Red Wings primary affiliate since the 2002-03 season. the Red Wings say that the close proximity of their minor league team in Grand Rapids as the most convenient NHL/AHL partnerships as Van Andel Arena and Little Caesars Arena are only 157 miles apart. Organizers and members of Philadelphia’s Chinatown say they were surprised by the 76ers’ announcement that they hope to build a $1.3 billion arena just a block from the community’s gateway arch. They say no one reached out for community input before the announcement. Now, they fear that they’ll be merely a stepping stone for people visiting the arena and that real estate values will price out older and immigrant residents. Chinatowns throughout the U.S. have been under threat from gentrification or development over the years. A spokesperson for the arena development company says that the process is in its infancy and that they planned to work with the community.
NASCAR – JGR accepts penalties given to Hamlin, Busch, apologizes
Joe Gibbs Racing has declined to appeal the penalties levied by NASCAR that stripped Denny Hamlin of his Pocono Raceway victory and cost Kyle Busch his runner-up finish. The win was awarded to Chase Elliott. Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota both flunked postrace inspection Sunday night when NASCAR found issues in both cars that affected the aerodynamics. Joe Gibbs Racing apologized in a statement and said changes were underway to make sure it did not happen again. Hamlin was stripped of his third Cup Series win of the season and a track-record seventh at Pocono.
Soccer – US women’s team has new vibe, work to do before World Cup
The U.S. women’s national soccer team has a new look with young talent, and coach Vlatko Andonovski has tweaked its traditional straightforward and speedy attack to take a more nuanced approach. The players say something more is going on as well. They say there’s been a shift in the team’s vibe due in large part to a new mix of veterans and younger players. Andonovski set about remaking the team after a disappointing Olympic tournament in Tokyo where the U.S. came away with a bronze. They’re now looking to build toward the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Former U.S. women’s national team star goalkeeper Hope Solo pleaded guilty Monday to driving while impaired, almost four months after she was found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in North Carolina with her 2-year-old twins inside. Solo also was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and resisting a public officer in connection with the March 31 incident. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that her attorney said the remaining two charges were voluntarily dismissed. A judge gave Solo a suspended sentence of 24 months and an active sentence of 30 days. She was given 30 days credit for time she spent at an in-patient rehabilitation facility.

MLB – MLB, union have Monday deadline for international draft deal
Major League Baseball made what was termed a “final offer” for an international draft, increasing proposed money for the first year in 2024 by $10 million to $191 million. The move came one day after the players’ association made a proposal that remained at $260 million and left the sides far apart heading into a Monday night deadline for a deal. Because an international draft was tied to dropping direct draft-pick compensation for qualified free agents, these negotiations will start to determine the market for a free agent group that includes Anthony Rizzo, J.D. Martinez, Chris Sale and Charlie Morton.
MLB – Pete Rose to appear on field in Philadelphia next month
Pete Rose will make an appearance on the field in Philadelphia next month for the first time since receiving a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball. Rose agreed to the lifetime ban in August 1989 after an investigation for MLB by lawyer John Dowd found Rose placed numerous bets on the Cincinnati Reds to win from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. Major League Baseball’s career hits leader will be part of Phillies alumni weekend, and will be introduced on the field alongside many former teammates from the 1980 World Series championship team on Aug. 7.
MLB – Big Papi a big hit at his Baseball Hall of Fame induction
Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was inducted into the Hall of Fame as legions of fans cheered him. They chanted “Papi! NASCAR – Elliott given Pocono win after Hamlin, Busch disqualified
First-place finisher Denny Hamlin was disqualified when his No. 11 Toyota failed inspection, giving Chase Elliott the NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Joe Gibbs Racing had Hamlin’s car and runner-up Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota both disqualified. Hamlin lost his record seventh victory at Pocono and his third win of the season. Busch had led a race-high 63 laps. There was no immediate word why the Toyotas were disqualified. Elliott, who had finished third, was given his fourth win of the season. NASCAR believed the last time it disqualified an apparent winner was April 17, 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis’ victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was thrown out because of an oversized fuel tank.
IndyCar – Josef Newgarden taken to hospital; Pato O’Ward wins at Iowa
Josef Newgarden collapsed in the motorhome lot following his late crash Sunday at Iowa Speedway and was taken to a Des Moines hospital by helicopter for evaluation. Team Penske said he’d be held overnight. IndyCar medical director Dr. Geoffrey Billows said Newgarden was awake and alert. Newgarden dominated and led 148 of the 300 laps while trying to sweep the doubleheader weekend. But something on his Team Penske car broke with 64 laps remaining and her spun hard into the outside wall — creating an opening for Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren SP to win the race.

Sungjae Im and Emiliano Grillo tied for second place. James Hahn surged in with a 65 to match Piercy and Tom Hoge at 13 under. Piercy bogeyed four of six holes before a triple bogey on 14.
Olympics – Track looks to pump up US fan base ahead of 2028 LA Olympics
Track is a niche sport in the United States when it comes to the fan base, even while the country hosts its first track world championships. The stands were half-empty at times and opening-weekend TV ratings didn’t beat out a routine NASCAR race. The sport’s leaders would like that to change over the next six years. They say that with sagging viewership totals and flat revenue across the broader Olympic world, it’s critical to bring the cornerstone sport of the games back to its glory days in the U.S. before they return to Los Angeles in 2028.
Track and Field – Sydney McLaughlin anchors US on record-setting day at worlds
Sydney McLaughlin took the last victorious lap of an All-American world championships. She pulled away in the 4-by-400 relay to close a U.S. runaway and give the Americans their record 33rd medal for the meet. McLaughlin turned a .73-second lead into a 2.93-second runaway on the anchor lap, adding this burst of speed to the world record she set two nights earlier in the 400 hurdles. Two more world records went down — in the very first and very last action of the last session at Hayward Field. Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan opened the evening by setting the record for the 100-meter hurdles in the semifinals: 12.12 seconds. And, pole vaulter Armand Duplantis of Sweden cleared 6.21 meters (20 feet, 4 1/2 inches) to best his world record.
NFL – Matthew Stafford throws passes in Rams’ camp practice opener
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw to receivers in practice Sunday for the first time since Los Angeles’ Super Bowl victory. Stafford had an injection in his throwing elbow early in the offseason to treat an unspecified injury with which he played late last season. He avoided any serious throws during minicamps and organized team activities, but he was throwing again in the opening practice of the Rams’ training camp at UC Irvine. Stafford said he has gradually ramped up his throwing activity in recent months, and he threw the ball in informal workouts before camp.

WNBA – Moscow says US must respect Russian law in Griner case
The spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry says the United States has shown disrespect for Russian law by characterizing basketball star Brittney Griner’s jailing on drug charges as “wrongful detention.” Griner has been jailed since she was arrested in mid-February at a Moscow airport after vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. The Phoenix Mercury standout and two-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged in court this month that she had the canisters, but said she had no intent to break the law. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that the legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use in parts of the U.S. has no bearing on what happens in Russia.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection was taken with the No. 1 overall pick out of Oklahoma after he won the Heisman Trophy and has largely delivered in his quest to make the Cardinals a better franchise. Arizona had a 5-10-1 record during his rookie season in 2019 but the Cardinals improved to 11-6 last season before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Wild Card round during the playoffs.
NBA – Philadelphia 76ers look to build new $1.3 billion arena
The Philadelphia 76ers are taking the first steps toward building a privately-funded sports and entertainment arena. The team’s managing partners on Thursday announced the creation of a new development company to create its future home in the city’s Fashion District. They say 76 Place is anticipated to cost about $1.3 billion. Josh Harris and David Blitzer say in a news release they’re committed to creating “a privately funded arena that strengthens ties within the local community through investments that prioritize equity, inclusivity and accessibility.” Groundbreaking is not expected for several years and the project is expected to be finished in time for the 2031-2032 NBA season. The Sixers currently play at Wells Fargo Center.

The extension comes after Smart led the Bulldogs to last season’s national championship, the first for Georgia since 1980. He is 66-15 in six years at Georgia. Lyles blew away U.S. teammates Kenny Bednarek by 0.46 seconds, with 18-year-old Erriyon Knighton finishing third. His victory came moments after Shericka Jackson gave the Jamaican women another gold in the sprints. She ran 21.45, the second-fastest time in history, to beat 100-meter champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
Olympics – Tokyo Olympic aftermath still being untangled a year later
The COVID-delayed Tokyo Olympics opened a year ago on July 23, 2021. They survived the one-year postponement, soaring costs and some public opposition. The aftermath is as difficult to untangle as the Games were to pull off. The Games were to drive tourism and showcase Japanese technology. The pandemic squelched that. The official price tag is $13 billion. The Tokyo city government picked up $5.4 billion in Games expenses and it is now trying to champion post-Games uses for a half-dozen new venues. The head of the Tokyo Games says a main legacy will be using Tokyo to drive a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.

Big Ten – Newsom wants explanation from UCLA about move to Big Ten
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is demanding an explanation from UCLA officials about their move to the Big Ten Conference. Newsom attended Wednesday’s UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. The closed-door meeting was the first since UCLA and Southern California announced on June 30 that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten in 2024. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system. Newsom — an ex officio member of the Board of Regents — is among others asking how the move will benefit all student-athletes, as well as how to mitigate the financial effects it will cause to UC Berkeley, California’s other public university in the Pac 12.

The NCAA has adequately addressed nine of 23 recommendations for creating comparable NCAA Tournament experiences for men’s and women’s basketball players. That’s according to a progress report from a third party hired by the NCAA. A scathing report issued almost a year ago criticized the NCAA for the differences in how the men’s and women’s tournaments were administered and conducted. Among the most visible changes were “March Madness” branding and increased cross-promotion for both tournaments in 2022 and a “First Four” event for women to bring it into line with the men’s tournament.
NCAA – ACC looking for ways to boost revenue, shrink financial gap
Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Jim Phillips says the league is looking for ways to boost its revenue and shrink a rising financial gap with leagues like the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference. That growing gap is stirring uncertainty about the league’s long-term future. Speaking Wednesday at the league’s preseason football media days, Phillips says “all options are on the table” and that the league is having regular conversations with ESPN on possible ways to enhance its TV deal through 2036. The league reported record revenues and distributed $36.1 million to member schools for the 2020-21 season. But the numbers lagged behind the Big Ten and SEC, leagues that are making aggressive expansion moves for future years.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred defended the sport’s treatment of minor leaguers, prompting immediate criticism from the players’ advocacy group.
