    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Yesterday
St. Louis Cardinals 8, Chicago Cubs 3
Baltimore Orioles 4, Chicago White Sox 3 – 11 Innings

Cardinals 8, Cubs 3 – Cardinals’ Goldschmidt has 2 HR, 5 RBIs in 8-3 win over Cubs
Paul Goldschmidt slugged his 32nd and 33rd homers and had five RBIs, Corey Dickerson set a franchise record for consecutive hits and the St. Louis Cardinals rolled to an 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Goldschmidt, Dickerson and Tommy Edman collected three hits apiece as the NL Central-leading Cardinals won for the 10th time in their last 12 games. The Cubs lost for the fourth time in six games. The Cardinals collected 16 hits. Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina did not play but were presented with scoreboard panels before their last game at Wrigley Field.

Orioles 4, White Sox 3 – F/11 – Stowers’ HR in 9th ties it, Orioles top White Sox 4-3 in 11
Kyle Stowers hit his first major league homer to tie the game with Baltimore down to its last strike, and the Orioles ended up beating the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 11 innings. Anthony Santander won it with an RBI single. But it was Stowers who saved the game for Baltimore in the ninth. The 24-year-old outfielder sent an 0-2 pitch from Liam Hendriks over the wall in right-center field. Hendriks had converted 19 save chances in a row before that.

NFL – Lions rookie linebacker Rodriguez eyeing starting spot
Detroit Lions rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez has become a surprising star on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” — and the sixth-round selection from Oklahoma State has a shot to start in Week 1. Rodriguez made an immediate impression on the coaching staff back in May. Linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard called Rodriguez one of the smartest young players he’s ever been around. Rodriguez’s star has only risen since. Though he started training camp with the second and third-team defenses, by last week’s joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts, the majority of his reps were coming with the starters.

NFL – Bears guard Teven Jenkins looks to secure starting role
Teven Jenkins has gone from left tackle to right tackle backup to rumors that he’s being traded. Now he’s playing right guard for the Chicago Bears with hopes of securing a starting spot. The Bears face the Browns this weekend in Cleveland in their preseason finale. Jenkins says he still can’t be sure if he’ll be traded, though it will be the second straight start for the team’s 2021 second-round draft pick. The Oklahoma State product has replaced veteran Michael Schofield at right guard. Jenkins, quarterback Justin Fields and starters will play a half in Saturday’s game.

NCAAFB – College Football – Week 1 – Big Ten
    Saturday
Nebraska vs. Northwestern, 12:30 p.m.                   at Dublin Ireland
    Wyoming at Illinois, 4:00 p.m.

NCAA – Supreme Court paved way for shifting college TV landscape
The Big Ten sent shockwaves in late June with the additions of Southern California and UCLA in 2024. That led to last week’s announcement of a seven-year rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that will see the conference receiving at least $1 billion a year. In 2020, the SEC sold the second package of football and basketball to the Walt Disney Company, making ESPN/ABC the home of SEC Football. The 10-year deal, starting in 2024, is worth at least $3 billion and is an addition to the original 20-year, $2.25-billion agreement that began in 2014. The increased revenues led to the additions of Texas and Oklahoma in 2025.

NHL – Long-term victims of car crashes win key Michigan decision
The Michigan appeals court has issued a major ruling affecting long-term victims of car crashes. The court says changes in auto insurance law can’t be applied retroactively to people who were severely injured before summer 2019. It’s a victory for people who are still recovering and their care providers. For decades, people injured in crashes were entitled to payment for “all reasonable charges” related to care and rehabilitation. But the new law sets a fee schedule and a cap on reimbursements not covered by Medicare. It had sudden, drastic consequences for people needing long-term care for crashes before June 11, 2019, and the providers of those services.  Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov was among the people who could have lost that care.  Konstantinov was critically injured in a limousine accident days after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1997.

Tennis – US Open – Unvaccinated Djokovic out of US Open; can’t travel to States
Novak Djokovic will not play in the U.S. Open, as expected, because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and thus is not allowed to travel to the United States. Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the year’s last Grand Slam tournament on Twitter on Thursday, hours before the draw for the event was revealed. Djokovic has won the U.S. Open three times and was the runner-up last year. He has 21 major titles. Play is scheduled to begin at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

Golf – PGA – Scheffler starts with Tour Championship lead and expands it
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy can each claim a roller coaster day in the Tour Championship. Only one of them was aware of it. Scheffler started with a two-shot lead as the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup. He led by six, it was down to two and he finished five ahead of Xander Schauffele. He wasn’t aware of this because he wasn’t looking at leaderboards. Scheffler had a 65. McIlroy knew full well what he was doing. He his his opening shot out-of-bounds for triple bogey. He made only four pars and salvaged a 67.

  • Tigers, Sox, and Cubs all win, HSFB debuts tonight – Thursday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 6, San Francisco Giants 1
Chicago White Sox 5, Baltimore Orioles 3
Chicago Cubs 7, St. Louis Cardinals 1

Tigers 6, Giants 1 – Manning throws 6 scoreless, Tigers beat Giants 6-1 for split
Matt Manning threw six scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers scored all six of their runs in the fifth to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-1 and split a two-game series. Manning allowed five hits, walked none and struck out a career-high eight in his first win since last Sept. 15 against Milwaukee. Victor Reyes and Willi Castro each drove in two runs while Kody Clemens and Harold Castro each drove in one with two out in the bottom of the fifth. All six runs were charged to Logan Webb, who was pulled after Harold Castro’s single made it 4-0.

White Sox 5, Orioles 3 – Giolito, Sheets lift White Sox to 5-3 win over Orioles
Lucas Giolito pitched impressively into the seventh inning, Gavin Sheets twice came through with the bases loaded and Yoán Moncada pulled off a slick double play to help the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Giolito allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Then Kendall Graveman was helped out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh thanks to Moncada’s play at third. The bases were loaded with one out and Chicago up 3-1. Moncada lunged to his right to snag a grounder. Then he touched third for the force and threw to first to complete the play.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 1 – Zach McKinstry homers as Cubs beat Cardinals 7-1
Zach McKinstry homered and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1. Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago, and Yan Gomes added two RBIs. Rowan Wick got five outs for the win, leading a solid performance by the Cubs bullpen. Lars Nootbaar homered for NL Central-leading St. Louis, and Corey Dickerson went 4 for 4. The Cardinals dropped to 17-5 in August.

    Today
St. Louis (Hudson 6-6) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 3-5), 2:20 p.m.
Chicago White Sox (Lynn 3-5) at Baltimore (Lyles 9-9), 7:05 p.m.
    Tigers are off

MLB – MLB teams to play all 29 opponents under ’23 balanced sked
Every Major League Baseball team will play each other in the same season for the first time next year as the sport switches to its first balanced schedule since 2000. As a result of the format switch agreed to in the March lockout settlement, high-profile games between division rivals such as Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals will be reduced from 19 and intradivision games will drop from 47% to 32%. A team will host all of the other 29 clubs at least once every two seasons. The season opens March 30 with all teams scheduled.

NBA – Kobe Bryant widow awarded $16M in trial over crash photos
A federal jury has found that Los Angeles County must pay Kobe Bryant’s widow $16 million for emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of the bodies of the NBA star and his daughter taken at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed them. The jurors who returned the verdict Wednesday agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that her privacy was invaded when they took and shared photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her grief after losing her husband and daughter. County attorneys argued that the photos were necessary to assess the scene.

NCAASB – Michigan’s Hutchins retires as NCAA softball victory leader
Carol Hutchins has retired after 38 seasons as Michigan’s softball coach after winning a record number of games. The school made the announcement Wednesday, signaling the end of a career that included 1,707 wins. Bonnie Tholl was promoted to lead the program after she serving as Hutchins’ top assistant for 29 years. Hutchins won a national title in 2005 and led the Wolverines to the NCAA championship game in 2015. She won 22 Big Ten regular-season titles, 10 conference tournament championships and never had a losing season.

NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 3
    Tonight
Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:00 p.m.
San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans, 8:15 p.m.

NFL – Hall of Fame Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson dies at 87
Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday. The MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the Vikings in January 1970 had been in declining health for years. He entered hospice care on Aug. 12. “Lenny the Cool” went into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He also was inducted as a broadcaster in 2012. Dawson spent several decades working on local TV and radio broadcasts while also doing color analysis for NBC and hosting HBO’s iconic "Inside the NFL.” The Chiefs intend to honor him during their preseason finale against Green Bay on Thursday night. Len Dawson was 87.

NFL – Lions Preview – Lions may have double digits in losses for 5th year in a row
The Detroit Lions seem destined for another rough season. If the defense struggles, it will likely lead to at least 10 losses for the fifth straight year, and second in a row under coach Dan Campbell. Rookie defensive end Aiden Hutchinson appears to be a player to build around, but there isn’t much help behind him right now. The Lions should be able to move the ball and score behind a strong offensive line in Jared Goff’s second season with the team. The veteran quarterback is surrounded by an improved group of receivers, a solid duo of running backs and standout tight end T.J. Hockenson.

NFL – Bears Preview – Bears enter new era, look to make jump under Poles, Eberflus
The Chicago Bears are prepared to enter a new era under new general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Chicago comes into the season with few established playmakers on offense and questions to answer on defense, starting with the opener against San Francisco on Sept. 11. The Bears went 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years. They are counting on quarterback Justin Fields to make big strides after a shaky rookie year. On defense, the Bears had an offseason contract standoff with star linebacker Roquan Smith that ended without a new deal.

Golf – PGA – Top PGA Tour players to commit to 20-event big money slate
The PGA Tour is making its boldest response yet to the rival Saudi-funded league. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced a plan for the best players to commit to a 20-tournament schedule starting next year. That means they will be competing against one another up to 17 times and maybe more. That involves elevating four additional tournaments that will offer $20 million or more to go along with the tournaments already announced. Monahan says top players will be determined by a new Player Impact Program criteria. The PIP will double in money to $100 million.

Golf – Woods, McIlroy behind tech-infused golf league in TV venture
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are bringing their own version of team golf to the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy are part of a new media group called TMRW (pronounced “tomorrow”) Sports. Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley is the CEO. The first project is called TGL. It’s a tech-infused golf league that will feature six teams of three players for matches on Monday night. The broadcast partner hasn’t been announced. It will be played in a custom-built arena. The long shots will be using a simulator. The short shots will be live. The 18-hole matches take two hours.

Cease allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings, his second straight start allowing at least three earned runs after he went 14 in a row yielding no more than one. The right-hander settled in after a rough first inning, but Austin Voth pitched through trouble enough times to keep the Orioles ahead. The White Sox, who have lost five of six, left 13 men on base.

NCAAMBKB – Emoni Bates officially transfers to Eastern Michigan
Emoni Bates has officially transferred to Eastern Michigan. The school announced that the 6-foot-9 guard will play for his hometown Eagles this season, nearly two months after Bates shared his plans on social media. He averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season as a freshman at Memphis, where he enrolled after reclassifying to join the class of 2021. Bates became the first sophomore to win the Gatorade national player of the year award in high school basketball in 2020, beating out Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley.

NCAAWBKB – ABC to air NCAA women’s basketball title game for 1st time
The NCAA women’s basketball title game will be broadcast on ABC this season for the first time. The championship game usually airs in prime time but will be played at 3 p.m. Eastern on April 2. ESPN said it would look at moving the game back to prime time in the future but currently has commitments to entertainment shows that night. NCAAFB – Under Golden, No. 5 Notre Dame readies its defense
Al Golden is Notre Dame’s third defensive coordinator in three seasons. The Irish defense will be tested in the Sept. 3 opener against high-powered and second-ranked Ohio State.

NCAAFB – Alabama gives Saban new 8-year, $93.6 million deal
Alabama coach Nick Saban is getting a new eight-year contract worth at least $93.6 million, eclipsing the recent megadeal of Southeastern Conference rival Kirby Smart. The University of Alabama trustees compensation committee approved a one-year extension through Feb. 28, 2030 for the 70-year old Saban, who has led the Crimson Tide to six national titles. Saban’s deal averages out to $11.7 million per year, topping Smart’s $11.25 million pay at defending national champion Georgia. The announcement comes a month after Smart agreed to a 10-year deal worth more than $110 million. The Bulldogs beat Alabama in the national championship game.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten clash as college football resumes international play
College football is going international again. Nebraska will play Northwestern in Dublin on Saturday. It’s the first regular-season international game in five years. Ireland has a five-game deal in place with organizers for the series dubbed the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. The pandemic affected plans for the first two games. Ireland first hosted a game in 1988 when Boston College beat Army 38-24. It’s Northwestern first time abroad and Nebraska’s second. The Huskers beat Kansas State 38-24 in Tokyo in 1992.

Cardinals 1, Cubs 0 – Pujols homers as Montgomery, Cardinals blank Cubs 1-0
Albert Pujols hit career homer No. 693, Jordan Montgomery pitched a one-hitter and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 for their season-high eighth straight victory. Pujols led off the seventh with a drive to left-center for his seventh homer in his last 10 games and No. 14 overall in his final big league season. There was a noticeable round of cheers from the Wrigley Field crowd of 29,719 as the three-time NL MVP rounded the bases on his second hit of the night. That one run was all Montgomery needed. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none in his first career complete game,

Royals 6, White Sox 4 – Waters breaks tie with walk, Royals beat White Sox 6-4
Drew Waters drew a bases-loaded walk to break an eighth-inning tie in his major league debut, boosting the Kansas City Royals to a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox in a game rescheduled because of the lockout in April. Joe Kelly, the seventh of eight White Sox pitchers, hit a pair of batters to start the inning. Ryan O’Hearn singled, and Waters drew a five-pitch walk with one out to break a 4-all tie. The White Sox rallied from a four-run deficit after their starter, Michael Kopech, exited the game having faced just four hitters. The team said he departed with left knee soreness.

MLB – Cubs’ Hendricks to miss rest of season with shoulder issue
Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks will not return this season after he was hampered by shoulder trouble for much of the year. Hendricks finishes with a 4-6 record and a career-high 4.80 ERA in 16 starts. The 32-year-old Hendricks says he was first diagnosed with tendinitis. But another MRI showed a capsular tear. Hendricks says the injury is from years of usage, and he doesn’t think he is going to need surgery to fix the issue.

Jets 24, Falcons 16 – Mariota, Ridder solid for Falcons in 24-16 loss to Jets
Marcus Mariota led Atlanta to scores on two of his three drives in the Falcons’ 24-16 loss against mostly New York Jets backups. Mariota strengthened his hold on the starting job by going 6 of 10 for 132 yards and a touchdown to Olamide Zaccheaus before giving way to rookie Desmond Ridder with a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Ridder went 10 of 13 for 143 yards and leading the Falcons to two field goals in three series. Fourth-stringer Chris Streveler led the Jets on two late touchdown drives to give New York the victory. The Jets’ Bradlee Anae returned a fumble 30 yards for a score.

NCAAHKY – Michigan and Ohio State to face off outside in Cleveland
The University of Michigan and rival Ohio State will face off against each other in an outdoor game to be held on Saturday February 18 at First Energy Stadium in Cleveland.  The game at the home of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns will be the 9th such outdoors game for the University of Michigan and first since the 2018-19 season when they defeated Norte Dame in South Bend at Notre Dame Stadium as part of the NHL’s Winter Classic.   The two teams will face each other two days prior in Columbus.  The game was announced as the 2022-23 Big Ten hockey schedule was made public.  Michigan has a 4-2-2 record in playing outside.

NCAAFB – Pick Six: Critical games dot the schedule as 2022 commences
The college football schedule offers a weekly selection of marquee games between top teams, and some will hit the ground running this year. Two September 3 showdowns will shuffle the preseason Top 25 quickly as No. 5 Notre Dame and new coach Marcus Freeman play at No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia, the defending national champion, plays No. 11 Oregon in Atlanta. Reaching across Power Five lines ends, eventually, and then long-held bitter rivalries take over later as teams grapple for championships and bowl positioning. Here are some of the premier matchups to anticipate.

NCAAFB – Transfer portal provides more hits, fewer misses for coaches
Mississippi, Southern California, LSU and Nebraska were among the most active teams recruiting players from the transfer portal ahead of the college football season. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin sought experienced players who could fill immediate needs. USC’s Lincoln Riley and LSU’s Brian Kelly went in looking for star power as they attempt quick rebuilds. Nebraska’s Scott Frost is simply trying to save his job. The top-ranked portal class belongs to Riley at USC but Kiffin is right behind at No. 2.

NCAAFB – 2 Indiana State football players among 3 killed in crash
Two freshman members of the Indiana State University football team were among the three students who were killed in a weekend crash. School officials said Monday that two other football team members who were injured in the crash are out of intensive care but remain hospitalized in serious condition. The crash happened at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when the vehicle went off a highway and struck a tree about 10 miles from the university’s Terre Haute campus. Those killed were identified as 18-year-old Christian Eubanks of Waukegan, Illinois; 19-year-old Jayden Musili of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and 19-year-old Caleb VanHooser of Liberty Township, Ohio. Eubanks was a freshman linebacker, and VanHooser was a freshman defensive back.

Gary Gaines, coach of ‘Friday Night Lights’ fame, dead at 73
Gary Gaines, coach of the Texas high school football team made famous in the book and movie “Friday Night Lights,” has died. He was 73. Gaines’ family says the former coach died in Lubbock after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Gaines made many stops in West Texas during a 30-year coaching career. He was best known for a four-year stint leading the highly successful program at Odessa Permian. His 1988 team was chronicled in Buzz Bissinger’s bestselling book. It portrayed a program that favored football over academics but had a sympathetic view of Gaines.

  • Greene hits longest home run against Ohtani in Tigers win over Angels – Monday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 4, Los Angeles Angels 0
Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians, PPD
Milwaukee Brewers 5, Chicago Cubs 2

Tigers 4, Angels 0 – Rodriguez returns, helps Tigers to 4-0 win over Angels
Eduardo Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings in his return to the Tigers, helping Detroit to a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers’ Riley Greene had a 448-foot homer on the first pitch he saw from Angels starter Shohei Ohtani. It was the longest home run Ohtani has allowed in the majors. Ohtani left the game with a stomach virus after four innings. Rodriguez hadn’t pitched in the majors since suffering a rib-cage injury on May 18.

White Sox at Guardians, PPD – White Sox-Guardians rained out, makeup game on Sept. 15
The AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox had their game postponed due to unplayable field conditions caused by early morning rain. No precipitation fell for more than three hours before the game was called following a delay of 2 hours, 56 minutes. Play never began as the groundskeepers kept the tarp on the infield from Saturday night. The game has been rescheduled for Sept. 15, a mutual off-day, at Progressive Field. It was the Guardians’ 12th postponement this season, 10 of them at home. Cleveland has played an MLB-high 10 doubleheaders. Four of Chicago’s five postponements in 2022 have been against Cleveland.

Brewers 5, Cubs 2 – Keston Hiura homers twice as Brewers beat Cubs 5-2
Keston Hiura homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 to salvage the finale of their weekend series. Rowdy Tellez also connected and Willy Adames hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly for Milwaukee, which had dropped three of four. The Brewers blew three one-run leads during a 6-5 loss to the Cubs in 11 innings on Saturday. Chicago wasted a stellar performance by Justin Steele, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki homered, but the Cubs finished with just five hits. Chicago had won five in a row and nine of 12 overall.

    Today
Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9) at Kansas City (Lynch 4-8), 2:10 p.m.
St. Louis (Montgomery 6-3) at Chicago Cubs (Smyly 5-6), 8:05 p.m.

MLB – Plate discipline: MLB umps crack down on blocking home
A few close plays at the plate over the past couple weeks have infuriated MLB catchers. Cleveland’s Austin Hedges and San Diego’s Austin Nola tagged out runners at the plate, only to have the calls reversed after video review when umpires decided both catchers blocked the plate. It’s a difficult play for catchers, who aren’t allowed to block the plate without possession of the ball. It’s also a difficult play for umpires, who have to make a judgment call that’s got plenty of grey area.

NFL – National Football League – Preseason Week 2
    Thursday

    Saturday
Detroit Lions 27, Indianapolis Colts 26

Lions 27, Colts 26 – Igwebuike’s late TD, 2-point stop lead Lions past Indy 27-26
Godwin Igwebuike’s tiebreaking 2-yard run with 4:03 left led the Detroit Lions to a 27-26 victory at Indianapolis. The Colts could have won it with a 2-point conversion but Jack Coan’s pass fell incomplete with 38 seconds left. Detroit quarterbacks David Blough and Tim Boyle split the snaps as Jared Goff took the day off following two joint practices against the Colts earlier this week. Blough and Boyle each threw a TD pass. Coan, an undrafted rookie, closed it out with the 26-yard scoring pass to Samson Nacua but couldn’t convert on Indy’s final play.

    Tonight
Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets, 8:00 p.m.

Golf – PGA – Patrick Cantlay wins another thriller at BMW Championship
Patrick Cantlay is a winner again at the BMW Championship in another thriller. The only difference this year is he won’t be going to the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed with a two-shot head start. No matter. Cantlay took advantage of a great break on the 17th hole when his tee shot bounced over a bunker and into the fairway. That set up a short birdie and a one-shot lead. He made par on the last for a one-shot win over Scott Stallings. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler tied for third and moves back to the No. 1 seed.

Golf – Tom Weiskopf, major champion and golf course architect, dies
Major champion and golf course architect Tom Weiskopf has died of pancreatic cancer. His wife says Weiskopf died Saturday at their home in Big Sky, Montana. Weiskopf’s contributions to golf go far beyond his 16 PGA Tour wins and his British Open title at Troon in 1973. He was blunt and accurate when he worked as a TV analyst. And he was equally successful as a golf course architect. Weiskopf was diagnosed with cancer in December 2020. Laurie Weiskopf says he was still working on design projects in the week leading to his death. Tom Weiskopf was 79.

Golf – US Am – Bennett holds on and beats Carr to capture US Amateur
Texas A&M senior Sam Bennett won the U.S. Amateur on Sunday, building a 5-up lead over Ben Carr and holding on for a 1-up victory at Ridgewood Country Club. Bennett is No. 3 in the world amateur ranking and had to get past three straight players ranked in the top 10 to reach the championship match. Bennett was 3 up after the first 18 holes and won two more holes early in the afternoon to seize control. Needing to win the 18th to extend the match, Carr missed the fairway to the right and came up short. He chipped to 8 feet. Bennett was on the green and had two putts from 12 feet to win. He lagged it within inches.

NASCAR – Larson wins rain-delayed NASCAR Cup race at Watkins Glen
Kyle Larson beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott on a restart with five laps to go and won the weather-delayed NASCAR Cup race at Watkins Glen International on Sunday. Elliott had control of the race late, but a caution gave Larson a chance and he took advantage, moving Elliott to the left coming out of the first turn and pulling away for a weekend Xfinity-Cup sweep. AJ Allmendinger was second, Joey Logano third. Elliott fourth and Daniel Suárez fifth.

LLWS – Dad of injured Utah Little Leaguer hopeful of full recovery
The father of a Little League World Series player from Utah who seriously injured his head when he fell out of his top bunk in the dorms says there is a chance his son can make a full recovery. Jace Oliverson told The Associated Press on Sunday night that his 12-year-old-son, Easton, was expected to fly back Tuesday to Utah and will remain in a hospital closer to home. Easton Oliverson, a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah, suffered the injury Monday. Jace Oliverson says he’s grateful that his son is still alive. Oliverson says doctors told him at one point there was no chance his son would survive.

FIFA – Qatar detains workers protesting late pay before World Cup
An advocacy group says Qatar arrested at least 60 foreign workers who protested going months without their pay and deported some of them. The incident comes just three months before Doha hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The move comes as Qatar faces intense international scrutiny over its labor practices ahead of the tournament. Qatar, like other Gulf Arab nations, heavily relies on foreign labor. Qatar’s government acknowledged that “a number of protesters were detained for breaching public safety laws.” However, it declined to offer any information about the arrests or any deportations. It said it was investigating the firm involved and planned to settle workers’ salaries.

  • Astros blast White Sox to split four game series – Friday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Yesterday

Chicago Cubs 3, Baltimore Orioles 2
    Tigers were off

    Astros 21, White Sox 5 – Bregman 2 HRs, 2 doubles, 6 RBIs, Astros trample Chisox 21-5
Alex Bregman hit two homers and two doubles, driving in a career-high six runs and powering the Houston Astros past the Chicago White Sox 21-5. Houston’s run total tied for the second most in team history — the Astros scored 23 against Baltimore in 2019. The Astros wound up with 25 hits as Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Christian Vazquez tied career highs with four each. McCormick, who had five RBIs, and Trey Mancini homered the AL West leaders. White Sox second baseman Josh Harrison pitched the ninth inning and allowed four runs and six hits in his third mound appearance of the season. The Astros won for the sixth time in their last eight games.

    Cubs 3, Orioles 2 – Contreras hits 2 homers, Cubs outlast contending O’s 3-2
Willson Contreras hit a pair of homers, Adrian Sampson pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2. Contreras had his 10th multi-homer game, which ranks second among Cubs catchers behind Gabby Hartnett who had 14. Sampson allowed four hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings, earning his first win since last Sept. 14 at Philadelphia. Rafael Ortega also homered for the Cubs, who have won five of seven. Brandon Hughes picked up his first career save by getting a double play on a soft liner by Cedric Mullins in the ninth.

MLB – Dodgers TV reporter injured sliding down Bernie’s Chalet
Dodgers television and radio reporter David Vassegh said he broke two bones in his right wrist and cracked six ribs when he tumbled and crashed into the padding at the end of his slide down “Bernie’s Chalet." He was injured going down the same slide Milwaukee mascot Bernie Brewer uses to celebrate home runs by the home team. Vassegh says he went down the slide twice Wednesday. The first time, he was filmed at the top of the slide, and everything went fine. The second time, he was filmed at the bottom, and that’s when his right arm crashed into the padding.

Bears 27, Seahawks 11 – Smith, error-prone Seahawks struggle in 27-11 loss to Bears
Geno Smith did little to distinguish himself in his battle with Drew Lock for Seattle’s starting quarterback job as the sloppy Seahawks fell 27-11 to the Chicago Bears in the second preseason game for both teams. The Seahawks had planned to start Lock but turned to Smith when Lock tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. That meant another opportunity for Smith, but his uninspired performance suggests Lock still has a chance to win the job. Smith finished 10 of 18 for 112 yards and was hampered by teammates’ mistakes while playing the first half. Second-year Bears quarterback Justin Fields made a brief appearance and led a field-goal drive.

NFL – Browns’ Deshaun Watson suspended 11 games, fined $5 million
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will serve an 11-game unpaid suspension, pay a $5 million fine and undergo required professional evaluation and counseling following accusations of sexual misconduct by two dozen women. Watson was accused of sexually harassing and coercing women during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Houston Texans. The league had sought to ban him for at least one year for violating its personal conduct policy. Watson’s suspension begins Aug. 30, when he won’t be allowed at the team’s facility. He may return for the Browns’ game on Dec. 4 in Houston. Cleveland traded for the three-time Pro Bowler in March, signing him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract

NCAA – Big Ten – B1G deal: Big Ten lands $7 billion, NFL-style TV contracts
The Big Ten has announced its new, seven-year media rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that is believed to be the richest ever struck with a college sports conference. A person familiar with the contracts tells The Associated Press that the conference’s soon-to-be 16 member universities eventually will share more than $1 billion in revenue per year. Starting in 2024, when USC and UCLA join the conference, Big Ten football Saturdays will be structured similar to the NFL. That means three marquee games being carried in consecutive time slots on three different major TV networks.

NCAAFB – 2022 NCAA rules changes address targeting, faking injuries
College football players penalized for targeting now can have part of their punishment appealed under new NCAA rules. Players flagged for making an above-the-shoulder hit in the second half of a game must sit out the first half of the following game. This season the national coordinator of officials can take a second look at the call. If the call is determined to be made in error, the player will be allowed to play in the first half the next game. There also are new rules pertaining to players faking injuries to stop the clock and blocking below the waist.

NCAA – NCAA asks members for help with NIL violation investigations
NCAA officials have sent a letter to members updating them on enforcement’s staff pursuit of “potential violations” of the name, image and likeness compensation policy. The association emphasized the need for schools to aid investigations. The email says NCAA enforcement staff is “actively investigating potential abuses of NIL transactions and we’ll allege any substantiated concerns as soon as possible.” The NCAA in 2020 lifted its ban on athletes earning money for things like endorsement and sponsorship deals, social media posts and personal appearances.

Golf – PGA/LIV – Judge sets January 2024 trial for LIV Golf suit against tour
Players from Saudi-funded LIV Golf who have filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour will be waiting nearly 16 months for the case to go to trial. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman has set the trial for Jan. 8, 2024. Depending on whether LIV attorneys proceed with a preliminary injunction that means PGA Tour players who have been suspended for signing with the rival league could go through another year of not being allowed at tour events. LIV attorneys say they will need discovery material from nine players. That indicates two players have asked out of the lawsuit.

Tennis – US Open champs get $2.6 million, total compensation $60M
The U.S. Open singles champions will receive $2.6 million this year, with total player compensation for the Grand Slam tournament surpassing $60 million for the first time. A larger portion of that total is being allocated to the earlier rounds, the U.S. Tennis Association announced. That decision came following input from the men’s and women’s tour player councils. The champions will earn less than the $3.9 million in 2019, the last year before the coronavirus pandemic, but players losing in the first or second round will earn around $20,000 more. The U.S. Open begins on Aug. 29 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

NASCAR – Kurt Busch to miss final 2 races of NASCAR’s regular season

Ty Gibbs will continue to fill in for Busch at Watkins Glen on Sunday and in the regular-season finale at Daytona the following week. Busch said he hoped to be cleared to compete when the playoffs begin in September at Darlington.

Easton Oliverson, a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah, suffered the injury Monday and was originally listed in critical condition. But a post on an Instagram account the family set up to share updates said he is back in a standard hospital room and can communicate with his parents. Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout intends to return to the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup on Friday night in Detroit. Trout hasn’t played since July 12. He missed the Angels’ past 30 games with an injury to his upper back and ribcage. He faced live pitching Monday and worked out Wednesday. The workouts left him confident he will be able to play against the Tigers when the Angels open a lengthy road trip. Trout earned an All-Star selection this summer while batting .270 with 24 homers and 51 RBIs in 79 games. But he has missed significant playing time for the second straight season.

The two teams will hold another practice against one another Thursday and meet Saturday for their second preseason game.

Ionescu made a 3-pointer and a jumper from the free-throw line during the run, and Marine Johannes highlighted the spurt with an over-the-shoulder pass to Howard. New York, which won its first playoff game since September 23, 2015, plays Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Chicago on Saturday. LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension through the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The maximum deal includes a player option for the 2024-25 season that would keep the second-leading scorer in NBA history with the Lakers past his 40th birthday. James was headed into the final year of his most recent deal with the Lakers, who signed the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and four-time league champion in July 2018. Barring injury, James is likely to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s career scoring king this winter.

NCAA – Big Ten – USC, UCLA exits could cost Pac-12 schools $13M in rights
A new report says the departures of Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12 Conference could mean an estimated loss of around $13 million per year in media rights for each of the remaining schools. The interim report was released during a Board of Regents meeting held at UCLA to address its move to the Big Ten Conference in 2024. California Gov. Gavin Newsom demanded an explanation from UCLA about the move when he attended last month’s Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. UCLA and USC announced in June that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference in two years. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system.

Golf – LIV – Report: LIV draft contract has restrictions and major bonus
The Wall Street Journal is reporting LIV Golf players need permission to grant exclusive interviews and agree to help recruit other players. The Journal says it reviewed a draft contract that Saudi-funded LIV Golf offered players. The newspaper says it wasn’t clear if terms in the draft are in all contracts or can be negotiated. None of the signing bonuses are mentioned. One provision says players would get a $1 million bonus if they were to win any of the four majors. Meanwhile, Greg Norman has sent a letter updating LIV Golf’s request for world ranking points.

Golf – PGA – Players-only private meeting was all about a better PGA Tour
Tiger Woods felt strongly enough about a private meeting of top PGA Tour players that he flew from Florida to Delaware to attend. What’s emerging from that players-only meeting is unity against a rival league funded by Saudi money and how to make the PGA Tour better. There was another form of unity. No one is willing to share details on the best way forward. Xander Schauffele says there was a code to keep tight lips. Rory McIlroy says the ideas are for tour executives to hear as they forge a path. As for Woods? McIlroy says he remains the biggest voice.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to 1-year deal with D Jack Johnson
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a one-year contract with Jack Johnson after the veteran defenseman helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup last season. Johnson’s contract carries a $950,000 hit to the salary cap. General manager Kyle Davidson says Johnson “provides the team with a strong veteran presence, good size and a competitive edge.” The 35-year-old Johnson broke into the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007. He has 72 goals and 240 assists in 1,024 games, also playing for Columbus, Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers.

Chicago White Sox 4, Houston Astros 3

Tigers 4, Guardians 3 – Carpenter hits HR, Francona ejected as Tigers beat Guardians
Rookie Kerry Carpenter homered for the second straight night and the Detroit Tigers survived a wild ninth inning to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3. Cleveland manager Terry Francona was ejected for arguing when the umpires ruled Myles Straw struck out with the tying run on third for the second out of the inning. Plate umpire Lance Barksdale originally ruled Straw fouled off a 2-2 pitch from Tigers closer Gregory Soto. The four umpires had a meeting and ruled Straw swung and missed for strike three. Francona argued the call with Barksdale and was quickly ejected.

White Sox 4, Astros 3 – Moncada hits winning single in 8th again, ChiSox beat Astros
Yoán Moncada came through with the go-ahead single in the eighth inning for the second straight game, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Houston Astros 4-3. The White Sox have won five straight. They moved within a game of AL Central leader Cleveland. Moncada hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Monday’s 4-2 win. This time, Chicago had a runner on third when he singled to center against Héctor Neris to make it 4-3. The showdown between AL Cy Young Award contenders Dylan Cease and Justin Verlander didn’t live up to its billing. Each allowed three runs.

    Cubs 7, Nationals 5 – F/11 – Wisdom’s double in 11th propels Cubs to 7-5 win over Nats
Patrick Wisdom drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 7-5. Wisdom led off the inning with a double down the left-field line against Victor Arano, scoring automatic runner Willson Contreras. Wisdom then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Seiya Suzuki’s single. Brandon Hughes pitched the 10th for Chicago and Mark Leiter Jr. worked the 11th for his first save. Nationals prospect C.J. Abrams extended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, his first hit with Washington.

MLB – La Russa rejects idea fan pushed him to use pinch runner
White Sox manager Tony La Russa got a kick out of the idea that a screaming spectator convinced him to insert a pinch-runner during Chicago’s winning rally against the Houston Astros on Monday night. La Russa insisted Tuesday he had no idea a fan near the dugout was yelling for him to send in Adam Engel to run for Eloy Jiménez when he made the move. Jiménez had just hit a tying, two-run double during a four-run eighth inning that propelled Chicago to a 4-2 victory. A smiling La Russa told reporters to “make his day, tell him I heard him.” La Russa said he and his staff were trying to decide whether to keep Jiménez in for a potential at-bat later with the game tied in the eighth.

NBA – NBA schedule won’t have games on Election Day this year
The NBA will be off on Election Day. The league’s schedule for the coming season will have all 30 teams playing on Nov. 7. That’s the night before the midterm elections. The NBA is hoping teams use that night as an opportunity to encourage fans to get out and vote, plus amplify the need for civic engagement. Nov. 8 is Election Day and no NBA teams have games scheduled then. The move is a rarity for the league. The NBA typically plays no games on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and tries to avoid scheduling games on the day of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game.

NBA – Bulls rookie Lewis needs knee surgery, out indefinitely
The Chicago Bulls say rookie Justin Lewis will need surgery to repair an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is out indefinitely. The team said Tuesday that Lewis was injured last weekend and will have surgery in the coming weeks. The 6-foot-8 forward went undrafted after averaging 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Marquette. He signed with the Bulls in July.

NFL – Seattle QB Lock tests positive for COVID-19; out vs. Bears
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the team’s preseason game against Chicago. The Seahawks issued a statement regarding Lock’s positive test about two hours following the end of a practice in which Lock was a full participant and led the No. 1 offense. Seattle coach Pete Carroll announced after practice that Lock would start Thursday’s game against the Bears after he served as the backup to Geno Smith in last weekend’s preseason game in Pittsburgh. Lock was acquired from Denver as part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos and has been competing with Smith for the starting job with the Seahawks.

NFL – QB Stafford shows no throwing limitations in Rams scrimmage
Matthew Stafford showed no throwing limitations while fully participating in a scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. Stafford’s smooth play further underlined the Super Bowl-winning quarterback’s declaration that his injured elbow will be fine. Stafford made all sorts of throws during the lengthy scrimmage at the Rams’ training complex. Coach Sean McVay was pleased by the latest step in the veteran quarterback’s increased workload. The 34-year-old Stafford played through elbow pain last season while leading the Rams to the title in his first season with the team. He had an unspecified elbow injection in the offseason.

NFL – NFL looks like old self entering 3rd season in COVID-19 era
The NFL essentially is back to normal entering its third season amid COVID-19. Derrick Henry has been seen jogging on the field with his daughter after practice. Green Bay Packers are once again borrowing kids’ bicycles for the ride to practice. Fans are up close to their favorite players getting autographs, high-fives and handshakes. There are no more trailers or tents for testing and masks are rare. All the protocols devised and tweaked by the league and the NFL Players Association implemented in 2020 and 2021 were suspended last March with the NFL citing trends showing the spread of the coronavirus declining.

LLWS – Utah boy injured in dorm fall at Little League World Series
A 12-year-old Little League World Series player from Utah is in critical condition with what his family said was a head injury suffered when he fell off a bunk bed at the dormitory complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Easton Oliverson is a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah. His dad, Jace Oliverson, is an assistant coach on the team. Oliverson posted on Facebook that doctors told him his son had punctured an artery which caused bleeding on the brain and needed a piece of skull removed. His uncle tells The Associated Press that Easton is using a breathing tube.

NCAAFB – G5 teams could have fewer chances vs. P5 after realignment
The realignment in the major conferences could lead to fewer opportunities in the future for Group of Five teams to play those bigger schools. Cincinnati was the first G5 team to make the College Football Playoff last year when its undefeated regular season included road wins over Notre Dame and Indiana. But the games most G5 and FCS schools play against the Power Five teams are about the paycheck they get to help finance their programs. The SEC and Big Ten are both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons. The other Power Five leagues also are going through transitions.

Tennis – Serena Williams loses to Raducanu; US Open next
Serena Williams has fallen to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career. She lost 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. The 40-year-old Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down. She did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion, most recently in 2017 at the Australian Open. She has said expanding her family is a big reason she plans to step away.
