NCAAFB – No. 8 Michigan aiming higher, hosts Colorado State in opener
No. 8 Michigan wants to surpass the success last year’s team had, and that won’t be easy. The Wolverines won a Big Ten title for the first time since 2004 and earned its first trip to the College Football Playoff. To achieve lofty goals, the Wolverines can’t afford to get stunned in a game that’s expected to be a rout such as Saturday’s opener at home against Colorado State. Former Nevada coach Jay Norvell is making his debut, hoping to help the Rams stay competitive in a game they’re expected to lose by four-plus touchdowns.
NCAAFB – No. 2 Ohio State seeks fast start against No. 5 Notre Dame
No. 2 Ohio State has one of the most explosive offensive attacks in the nation, and coach Ryan Day is stressing a fast start against No. 5 Notre Dame in Saturday night’s season opener. New Buckeyes defensive coordinator Jim Knowles installed a new scheme and a salty attitude in the unit. Emotions will be running high for first-year Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, who played linebacker at Ohio State in 2004-08 and coached at Cincinnati under Luke Fickell. The Fighting Irish haven’t beaten Ohio State since 1936.
NFL – Bears set to unveil conceptual plans for suburban stadium
The Chicago Bears are set to unveil conceptual plans for a suburban stadium and entertainment complex next week. The team is considering a move from its longtime home, Soldier Field. The Bears have signed a purchase agreement for a 326-acre tract of land in Arlington Heights, Illinois, about 30 miles northwest of Soldier Field. The team will hold a community meeting in the town next week and detail its plans. Team president Ted Phillips has said a deal likely wouldn’t close until early 2023. That’s when the team would decide if it makes sense financially to pursue the project.
NFL – Bears GM Poles not ruling out long-term contract with Smith
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles remains optimistic the team can agree to a long-term contract with Roquan Smith and repair their relationship after the star linebacker requested a trade. Poles says he has “faith” Smith will “have a good year and we’ll work on our relationship.” Smith was hoping to strike a new deal with the contract he signed after the Bears drafted him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2018 set to expire following this season. He participated in voluntary and mandatory offseason workouts. But with negotiations at a standstill, things took a heated turn once training camp started. He opted to “hold in” and then went public with a trade request while accusing Poles of negotiating in bad faith.
NFL – Ravens’ mascot headed to IR with ‘drumstick’ injury
The Baltimore Ravens are making a feathered addition to their injured reserve list. Coach John Harbaugh announced that Poe — the team’s bird mascot — was going on IR. Poe was carted off the field at halftime of the Ravens’ preseason game against Washington last weekend. Poe was joined by other mascots for a halftime game before being injured. Harbaugh said Poe has a season-ending injury to his drumstick, and the team would find a replacement.

NBA – AP source: Cavaliers acquiring All-Star G Mitchell from Jazz
A person familiar with the trade tells AP the Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to acquire All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell in a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NBA still has to approve the trade. The person says Cleveland is sending guard Collin Sexton, forward Lauri Markkanen and rookie guard Ochai Agbaji along with three unprotected first-round picks to the Jazz. Mitchell is one of the league’s premiere scorers and his acquisition could put the Cavs among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.
NASCAR – NASCAR drivers feeling the hits more in Next Gen car
The jolts are more jarring and the effects linger for longer for NASCAR drivers in the Next Gen car’s debut season. Racers feel they have taken harder hits in accidents this season than in the past. NASCAR crash analysis agrees, and there have been discussions with drivers about how to improve safety. The issue came to the forefront earlier this summer when Kurt Busch crashed in qualifying at Pocono. He suffered a concussion and still has not been cleared to race. Busch gave up his playoff spot because of his condition.

The first team to score seven points in the OT period wins, and that extra session will be untimed.
MILB – Minor league unionization getting interest from players
Players on the Single-A Tampa Tarpons have been talking individually about efforts to unionize minor league players and the idea is gaining momentum. Centerfielder Spencer Jones says it is something that definitely interests him. Tampa reliever Ryan Anderson says it makes a lot of sense because it could lead to better benefits down the line. Signed cards from 30% of minor leaguers in the bargaining unit would allow filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a union authorization election, which would be decided by majority vote.

MLB – Exhibition games start Feb 24 as MLB hopes for normal spring
Major League Baseball’s exhibition season will start Feb. 24 with a pair of games in Arizona. All 30 teams are scheduled to play Feb. 25 as games start in Florida. Spring training was cut short in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and workouts were restricted the following year due to coronavirus protocols and stadium capacity was limited. Spring training workouts in 2022 were to have started on Feb. 16 but were delayed until March 11 by a lockout.
MLB – WSox manager La Russa out indefinitely with health issue
Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa is out indefinitely because of an unspecified health issue. The 77-year-old La Russa missed Tuesday night’s 9-7 loss to Kansas City on the recommendation of his doctors. The team says the Hall of Famer is scheduled to undergo additional testing in Arizona with his personal physicians “over the coming days.” Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue to serve as acting manager while La Russa is out.

NCAAFB – No. 12 Oklahoma State opens with Central Michigan
Oklahoma State reached the Big 12 championship game last season and beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. The 12th-ranked Cowboys believe they can accomplish at least that much this season with veteran quarterback Spencer Sanders leading the way. Oklahoma State opens with Central Michigan on Thursday night. The Cowboys can’t afford to slip early, and they remember an upset loss to the Chippewas in 2016 that provided an unexpected blemish on a 10-3 season. Central Michigan returns last year’s national rushing leader, Lew Nichols III, from a team that went 9-4 and won the Sun Bowl.
NCAAFB – AP sources: Presidents meeting to discuss CFP expansion
The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss expanding the four-team format. The presidents hope to accelerate a process that bogged down last year and re-open the possibility that a new model for crowning champion could be implemented as soon as the 2024 season. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the CFP’s Board of Managers, led by Mississippi State President Mark Keenum, is set to convene by video conference. All the people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the board’s plans were not being made public.
NCAAFB – No. 5 Notre Dame faces defensive test against No. 2 Buckeyes
No. 5 Notre Dame relishes the Saturday night challenge. It opens the season at No. 2 Ohio State against an offense that led the FBS in total offense and scoring last season and is only expected to get better in C.J. Stroud’s second season as starting quarterback. And if Notre Dame is going to defeat Ohio State for the first time since 1936, first-year coach Marcus Freeman knows what he needs — the defense to come up big against his alma mater.
NCAAFB – Born a Buckeye: Ohio State prepared Freeman for Notre Dame
Marcus Freeman was born and raised a Buckeye. He played at Ohio State, too, and worked there. Freeman says he wouldn’t be the head coach at Notre Dame at the age of 36 without the time he spent in Columbus, Ohio. Freeman is taking a trip home: The season opener for his fifth-ranked Fighting Irish is Saturday night at No. 2 Ohio State. Freeman’s peers say he’s ready for the challenges that come with being the head coach of Notre Dame.
NCAA approves transfer windows and enforcement reforms
The NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved changes to transfer rules and several proposals aimed at enforcement reforms. The proposed changes came from the Transformation Committee as part of the first phase of that group’s work. The changes to transfer rules will go into effect immediately. Sport-specific windows will be set during an academic year when athletes would be required to enter their names in the transfer portal to be eligible immediately to compete the following school year. On the enforcement side, the Independent Accountability Resolution Process will be eliminated. The NCAA’s outside enforcement task force to handle complex infractions cases has mostly slowed down the processing of cases.
Tennis – US Open – Serena beats No. 2 seed Kontaveit at US Open to reach 3rd Rd
Serena Williams has eliminated No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 in the U.S. Open’s second round to ensure that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will play at least one more singles match. The 40-year-old Williams has hinted this will be the last tournament of her illustrious career. Williams missed about a year of action before returning to the tour in late June at Wimbledon. She lost in the first round there and was 1-3 in 2022 entering the U.S. Open, where she is 2-0 so far this week. She beat Danka Kovinic in the first round before following that up against Kontaveit on Wednesday night in front of a full house at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Tennis – US Open – Tiger Woods shows up to support Serena Williams at US Open
Serena Williams credits Tiger Woods with offering advice before she made her recent comeback from a year-long injury absence. Woods sat courtside at the U.S. Open on Wednesday night, throwing uppercuts in the stands to cheer Williams on to victory. Williams says Woods is "one of the reasons I’m here.” Woods was in Williams’ guest box at sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium, two seats over from her sister, Venus.
NFL – Bears claim OL Alex Leatherwood off waivers from Las Vegas
The Chicago Bears have claimed offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood off waivers a day after the 2021 first-round draft pick was let go by the Las Vegas Raiders. Leatherwood was the No. 17 overall pick last year. The Alabama product struggled at right tackle before being moved to guard after four games. He had difficulties inside, too, and dropped on the depth chart this summer before Las Vegas let him go.
NFL – Bears’ Smith says he’s focused on season, not contract talks
Chicago Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith insists his focus is on the upcoming season and not his long-term future after a contract standoff with the team ended with no new deal. Smith says there won’t be any more negotiations with new general manager Ryan Poles on an extension between now and the start of the season. He also says he’s not focusing on whether he will re-sign with Chicago after the season. Smith hoped to strike a new deal, with the contract he signed after the Bears drafted him with the No. 8 overall pick in 2018 set to expire following this season.
NFL – Lawyers bash Goodell-led arbitration in NFL racial bias suit
Lawyers for three Black NFL coaches alleging racial bias by the league took aim directly at Commissioner Roger Goodell in their latest arguments against arbitrating a dispute they say belongs before a jury. In papers filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, the lawyers wrote that arbitration, which would be led by Goodell, would allow “unconscionably biased one-sided ‘kangaroo courts’" to decide the outcome of the lawsuit filed in February. They say Goodell could not be fair in overseeing and ruling on the dispute as to whether the league engages in systemic discrimination. They cited the hundreds of millions of dollars he earns from teams and his public statement that the suit is without merit.
NFL – Gruden ‘ashamed’ about emails that cost him his job
Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden says he is “ashamed” about his old offensive emails that cost him his job and hopes to get another chance in football. Gruden spoke publicly about the affair at the Little Rock Touchdown Club for the first time since he resigned as coach of the Raiders last October. The resignation followed the publication by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of emails he had sent from 2011 to 2018 that contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments.

MLB – Clark says push to unionize minor leaguers off to good start
Major League Baseball Players Association head Tony Clark is confident that at least 30% of minor league players will sign union authorization cards in the coming days and weeks. That would pave the way forward to start the process of creating a separate bargaining unit from the big leaguers. Clark said there has been a “tremendous response.” Signed cards from 30% of minor leaguers in the bargaining unit would allow the union to file a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a union authorization election, which would be decided by majority vote.
NFL – St. Joe Alumni makes Colts’ 53-man roster
One former player that played under the Friday night lights at Dickinson Stadium in St. Joseph, will now be playing in front of the brighter lights and the dome of Lucas Oil Stadium. Wesley French, a 2015 graduate of St. Joseph High School, made the 53-man roster of the Indianapolis Colts. He was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent after going unselected in this year’s NFL Draft. An offensive lineman, French, played significant time in all three of the Colts preseason games. French played his college football at Western Michigan.

The under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica was the first youth tournament to use FIFA’s safeguarding program, which is aimed at keeping participants and fans safe from abuse, exploitation and harassment. FIFA announced that all 32 games were staffed by a safeguarding official as well as a representative from Costa Rica’s National Children’s Institute. Participants were also briefed about abuse and how to report it.

Tennis – US Open – Venus Williams, Raducanu, Osaka all out in US Open 1st round
Past U.S. Open champions Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu all have lost in straight sets in the first round of the U.S. Open. Williams, who won two of her seven major titles in New York, was beaten by Alison Van Uytvanck in straight sets Tuesday. Their match came a day after Serena Williams won her first-round match in a much fuller and louder Arthur Ashe Stadium. Venus, who turned 42 in June, has not made any pronouncements about her future in tennis, unlike her younger sibling. Osaka is also a two-time title winner at the U.S. Open and was beaten by Danielle Collins. Raducanu became the third defending champion at Flushing Meadows to bow out in the first round, eliminated by Alizé Cornet.
NCAAFB – Recent success secures Notre Dame’s treasured independence
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick tells The Associated Press that the Fighting Irish’s position as a major college football independent is stronger now than when he stepped into the job in 2008. Despite massive change throughout college sports, Notre Dame’s success on the field has made it even more unlikely that Notre Dame football will join a conference. The fifth-ranked Fighting Irish begin their season Saturday night at No. 2 Ohio State. Notre Dame is coming off its fifth straight double-digit victory season.
NCAA – ‘Arms race’: NIL compensation now a potent recruiting weapon
The NCAA instituted a policy last summer allowing athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness. The idea was that it would give established players a chance to profit off their fame but wouldn’t be used as a recruiting weapon. That’s not how it’s worked out. The NCAA emphasizes that rules remain in effect to avoid pay-for-play situations or improper inducements. But there’s nothing stopping colleges from pointing out to recruits how much their athletes on campus have made through NIL compensation deals. It has now become common.
IIHF – US beats Canada 5-2 at women’s hockey world championship
Megan Keller had a goal and an assist as the United States rallied for a 5-2 victory over Olympic champion Canada in group play at the women’s hockey world championship. Lacey Eden scored the winner in the third period to help the Americans beat their longtime rival and close out group play undefeated in central Denmark. The teams are heavy favorites to meet again in Sunday’s final. The quarterfinals are Thursday. The U.S. will face Hungary, while Canada will play Sweden. Group B winner Czechia will play Finland, and Switzerland faces Japan.
Golf – McIlroy prepares to ‘stomach’ LIV Golf players at Wentworth
It sure doesn’t sound like Wentworth will be a place for PGA Tour players and LIV Golf players to visit over tea. There are 18 LIV players who have entered the BMW PGA Championship next week at European tour headquarters. Rory McIlroy says it’s going to be hard for him to stomach seeing some of the players who have left the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed rival tour. Some of those players are longtime friends or Ryder Cup teammates. And for those who signed up for LIV to play less? The next three weeks will be taking them to Boston, London and Chicago.

Blue Jays 5, Cubs 4 – F/11 – Jansen homers, drives in winner in 11th as Jays beat Cubs
Danny Jansen hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and singled home the winning run in the 11th as the Toronto Blue Jays overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Chicago Cubs 5-4. Jansen connected off Erich Uelmen for his 11th homer, then won it with a base hit to left field against Mark Leiter Jr. that scored Matt Chapman from second base and ended Toronto’s three-game skid. Toronto tied it 4-all in the eighth when Cavan Biggio hit a two-out double off Manuel Rodríguez and scored on Chapman’s single. The Cubs put runners at second and third with two outs in the 11th but Yimi Garcia struck out P.J. Higgins.

MLB – Cubs put Sampson, Steele on restricted list, add Little
The Chicago Cubs have put right-hander Adrian Sampson and left-hander Justin Steele on the restricted list before their game at Toronto. Foreign nationals who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 aren’t allowed to enter Canada, save for limited exceptions that require a 14-day quarantine. Unvaccinated baseball players are placed on the restricted list, where they are not paid and do not accrue major league service time. Chicago added left-hander Brendon Little to begin the three-game series Monday night. Little was 3-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 29 relief appearances at Triple-A Iowa, recording one save in two chances.
MLB – MLB players’ association trying to unionize minor leaguers
The Major League Baseball Players Association is attempting to unionize minor leaguers, reversing decades of opposition. The players’ association says it is circulating union authorization cards among players with minor league contracts to form a separate bargaining unit from the big leaguers. While the average major league salary is above $4 million, players with minor league contracts earn as little as $400 a week during the six-month season. Signed cards from 30% of the estimated 5,000 to 6,500 minor leaguers would allow the union to file a petition to the National Labor Relations Board asking for an authorization election.
Tennis – US Open – Serena Williams not done yet; wins 1st match at US Open
Serena Williams has won her match in the first round of the U.S. Open. Williams beat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion who turns 41 next month and has said she is ready to move on from her playing days. After her victory Monday night, Williams said she has been intentionally vague about whether the U.S. Open will be her last tournament — and wants to keep it that way. She will play again Wednesday in the second round of singles against No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit.
Tennis – US Open – US Open champs Medvedev, Murray win; Ukrainian stuns Halep
Daniil Medvedev had an easy start to his U.S. Open title defense, beating Stefan Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Simona Halep had another early exit, this time in a memorable first tour-level win for Ukrainian Daria Snigur, who upset the No. 7 seed 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. The top-seeded Medvedev looked just as strong as he did in sweeping past Novak Djokovic in last year’s final for his first major title. Andy Murray was another early winner, 10 years after winning the first of his three Grand Slam titles in Flushing Meadows. He beat No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.
IIHF – US set for hockey showdown with Canada after routing Swiss
The United States has warmed up for its group showdown with Canada by blitzing Switzerland 9-0 at the world women’s ice hockey championship in Denmark. The U.S. matched Canada with 3-0 records. Their Group A closer on Tuesday is also in Herning. It is expected to be a preview of the final on Sunday. Czechia also improved to its record to 3-0 after dominating winless Germany 6-0 in Group B. Finland got its first win at Japan’s expense by 9-3. Sweden confirmed a top-two place behind the Czechs after beating Hungary 3-2 in its second consecutive shootout win.
NCAAFB – Harbaugh plans to start McNamara, McCarthy in opening games
Jim Harbaugh has decided to start Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara when No. 8 Michigan opens its season Saturday at home against Colorado State. Harbaugh has chosen to give J.J. McCarthy the Wolverines’ first snap when they host Hawaii the following week. McNamara started every game last season as a junior, leading Michigan to a win over rival Ohio State for the first time in a decade and to its first Big Ten title since 2004. McCarthy played in 11 games last year as a highly touted freshman.
NCAAFB – All-America OL Patterson questionable for Irish at No. 2 OSU
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman says offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson is questionable for the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish’s opener against No. 2 Ohio State. Patterson has been dealing with an injury to his right foot for about two weeks, but Freeman did expect the fifth-year senior to practice this week. Patterson was one of the best centers in the country last year for Notre Dame and a preseason All-American. He was listed as the starter at left guard on the Irish’s first depth chart of the season.
NCAAFB – Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud: ‘I barely touched my potential’
C.J. Stroud was an untested freshman trying to win the starting quarterback job at Ohio State at this time last year. The 20-year-old California native is now a Heisman Trophy favorite as the 2022 season opens and is already projected to be a first-round NFL draft pick next year. He wants to win a national championship before he moves on. He knows Ohio State has the offensive fire power to do it. Stroud’s confidence and more vocal leadership displayed in the summer and in preseason camp impressed his teammates, who voted him a captain.

Tigers 9, Rangers 8 – Garcia’s hit streak ends at 23, Rangers fall to Tigers
Adolis Garcia struck out during a Texas rally that fell short in the ninth inning, ending his 23-game hitting streak as the Detroit Tigers held off the Rangers 9-8. Garcia’s streak was the longest in the American League this season. He went 0 for 3 with two walks and fell one game short of matching the longest hitting string ever by a Cuban-born big leaguer, set by Rafael Palmeiro in 1994 for Baltimore. Harold Castro drove in five runs as the Tigers built a 9-0 lead in the sixth. Corey Seager homered twice for Texas. Detroit took a 9-2 lead into eighth before Garcia had an RBI groundout and Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer. After Texas closed to 9-8 in the ninth, Garcia fanned with a runner on second.
D’Backs 3, White Sox 2 – Diamondbacks down scuffling White Sox 3-2 to finish sweep
Jake McCarthy hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the struggling Chicago White Sox with a 3-2 victory. Diamondbacks rookie Stone Garrett launched his first major league home run and Sergio Alcántara also went deep for Arizona, which earned its first interleague sweep since 2019. Noé Ramirez pitched a scoreless eighth and Ian Kennedy got three outs for his ninth save. Kendall Graveman took the loss in relief of Dylan Cease, who allowed Arizona’s two solo homers while striking out eight in a career-high eight innings. Alcántara hit his fourth homer of the season in the eighth to tie it at 2.

Brewers starter Eric Lauer worked five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four. Chicago got 3 1/3 out of right-hander Adrian Sampson, who allowed just a run despite five hits and a walk. Chicago reliever Sean Newcomb gave up six runs in an inning as Cubs lost for the sixth time in their last nine games.

Mitch Trubisky staked his claim to be the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback, throwing for 160 yards and a touchdown in a 19-9 win over Detroit in the NFL’s preseason finale. Trubisky was at his best late in the first half, leading the Steelers on a 92-yard drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Steven Sims. Rookie Kenny Pickett played well in the second half for Ptitsburgh but it appears Trubisky has the inside track to be the starter when the Steelers begin the regular season in Cincinnati on Sept. 11.

Hawaii got back-to-back homers from Kekoa Payanal and Kama Angell in the first inning, sparking a 13-3 win in just four innings Sunday over Curacao in the championship of the Little League World Series. The LLWS title is Hawaii’s fourth. It won in 2018 and this same Honolulu team finished third last year, when COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented international teams from participating. Hawaii starter Jaron Lancaster was dominant once again as he threw all four innings, while only allowing three runs, three hits and striking out 10 Curacao hitters.
NASCAR – Dillon, Blaney nab last playoff spots at rain-soaked Daytona
Austin Dillon avoided a massive wreck in the rain to win at Daytona International Speedway and snag a playoff spot in the Cup Series’ regular-season finale. Dillon passed Austin Cindric for the lead with three laps to go after a 3 hour, 20 minute red flag for inclement weather. It was an aggressive move that capped a drama-filled race. Martin Truex Jr. was the biggest loser. Truex looked like he would secure the final postseason berth when the skies opened up, but he faded once the race restarted and allowed Ryan Blaney to make up ground in a wild points scramble.

NCAAFB – Free beer was right call at Dublin game says catering firm
In the postgame analysis, free beer at the Nebraska-Northwestern game in Ireland was the right call. The freebies flowed for two hours during Northwestern’s 31-28 victory on Saturday, and the catering company for Aviva Stadium hailed its workers for keeping the refreshments coming. Levy UK + Ireland said Sunday the problem was with its payment provider, SumUp, and not with the stadium’s internet connection. Levy, a sports and hospitality caterer whose other clients include English Premier League soccer clubs, did not give an estimate of lost revenue.

Rory McIlroy is the FedEx Cup champion for the third time. He stormed from a record-tying six shots behind to win the Tour Championship and capture the $18 million prize. Scottie Scheffler never trailed all week until the 70th hole. He built the six-shot lead Sunday morning with four birdies in six holes to complete the third round. But he was never on his game and made only one birdie in a round of 73. McIlroy shot a 66. He says winning felt even more significant because of the tumultuous year caused by Saudi-funded LIV Golf.
